What are your thoughts on Jones? Do you think he and the offense bounce back?Which is odd, since HC BB is a walking Wikipedia.
If the question is about the overall state of the offense, I think the Pats will look much improved and be similar to their 2021 production levels. So Top 10-15 in the league in points and yardage. IMO, Bill O'Brien will add more than any player added to the offense. NE has many of the same players as they did in 2021 but added some others that are potentially better than those that left. However, I still don't see Jones being much of a fantasy asset. They will still run the ball a lot, and I think BB is still intent on trying to keep scores down and playing keep away to limit how much the other team's offense is on the field. Stevenson is obviously a fantasy asset, but they don't have a ton else. I've been hearing for months they are trying to make Tyquan Thornton heavily involved in the offense. The O-line (or lack thereof) could be a huge problem. Jones is not the type of QB that can ad lib and make things happen on the fly. He melts under pressure and far too often chucks the ball up for grabs in those situations (and gets picked off). What are your thoughts on Jones? Do you think he and the offense bounce back?Which is odd, since HC BB is a walking Wikipedia.
The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien is implementing parts of the Alabama offense this season.
O'Brien, the offensive coordinator for Nick Saban for two seasons, coached a Crimson Tide offense based mostly on Steve Sarkisian's schemes. Sarkisian, of course, was Alabama's OC during Mac Jones' two years as starter. "The Patriots will also install some of the run-pass option material that Jones handled at Alabama, and they will continue to work on the zone running scheme that delivered mixed results under [Matt] Patricia," Howe said, adding Jones has appeared "more confident this spring and has been throwing the ball well." This is the latest sign that New England will tailor the offense to fit Jones after his 2022 struggles. It's good news all around for the team's fantasy-relevant players, including Jones, who had the league's fifth highest completion rate over expected as a rookie in 2021.

The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin reports the question of how third-year QB Mac Jones is viewed inside the Patriots “depends on who you ask.”
“It’s clear Patriots president Jonathan Kraft passionately defends and protects Jones,” according to Volin, who met with Kraft this spring. “The Krafts are invested in Jones succeeding. Belichick, meanwhile, barely wants to say his name in public.” The Patriots handling of Jones — not hiring an offensive coordinator last year and making Jones compete with Bailey Zappe this preseason — has divided ownership and the Patriots’ coaching staff. Jones has yet to be named the Patriots’ starter after his 2022 struggles, but with ownership backing the third-year quarterback, it’s unlikely Zappe unseats Jones before Week 1.
There is no competition. Jones is the starter. Period. Zappe is the backup. Volin is stirring the pot and looking for clicks. Jones has been treated like Brady was for years in practices / OTA’s. And the stuff about not saying his name is just not accurate.
Volin is reaching on this. BB and Mac aren't going out for beers after practice, but Jones has been leading everything there is to lead in practice, getting the huge majority of first team reps, and Zappe hasn't even had a chance to show anything because he hasn't had much time doing much in practice. BB and TB were thought to have an icy relationship too. BB even said when Brady was there that everyone was competing for a job. BB is still irked that Jones took his complaints outside the organization last year. There is no competition. Jones is the starter. Period. Zappe is the backup. Volin is stirring the pot and looking for clicks. Jones has been treated like Brady was for years in practices / OTA’s. And the stuff about not saying his name is just not accurate.
I am not a Volin fan but this is not stirring the spot…a multitude of sources have reported that there is some type of “coldness” between Jones and BB…if he plays well it won‘t matter but this is not Volin looking for clicks.
I personally think both things are true. There is no competition. Jones is the starter. Period. Zappe is the backup. Volin is stirring the pot and looking for clicks. Jones has been treated like Brady was for years in practices / OTA’s. And the stuff about not saying his name is just not accurate.

Patriots QB Mac Jones “has a sizable lead” over Bailey Zappe for the team’s starting quarterback job.
Jones has taken first-team reps in team drills over Zappe, who has repped strictly with backups. There’s been no competition between the two, with Jones clearly repping as the starter to this point. Jones has looked more confident in the team’s new offense this summer, with the third-year quarterback expected to run a system similar to what he ran in college.
Well why would you think he's going to amount to anything? If you're not a Patriots fan, the longer Mac is in the mix, the better. The kid actually thinks he's done something. Hello, you played for Alabama.
He's got time still, of course, but he's a bust, imo. Time will tell, and that's the fun part about this stuff, but I don't see it, at all.
Pound sand Matt Light.Matt Light being pretty direct...will be interesting to see if Mac has matured...BB hung him out to dry last year with Patricia...no debating that but I don't see this offense being too good so it will be interesting to see if he can maintain his composure.

"Mac didn't act like the best QB ever! Booooo"
His whole take boils down to "Listen to your elders" which is barely a stone's throw from "I was just following orders." It's far more nuanced than that Matt.
Jones probably should have waited until they were off the field. My guess is he mostly did.
Jones may have been a locker room distraction, I doubt it but maybe. Or maybe the entire roster knowing Patricia & Judge were in way over their heads was a locker room distraction.
Patricia & Judge earned their public floggings.
There is definitely a giant disconnect between what the media sees and how the team views itself. On a Callahan / Kyed podcast, they mentioned the offense is dialed in, very excited, and can't wait to get started. They all love Mac, have great confidence in him and their prospects for the season, and are all bonding and rallying to support each other. In general, the team members seem to have way better chemistry, they are in a good place, and there is much more positivity coming out of camp. Compare that to most of the media that has mostly bashed them, with many people thinking they will have the worst record in the BB era. Maybe that team dynamic will change if / when / once they start the season on a big losing streak, but for now, they think they are a legit contender (at least that's their mindset).Matt Light being pretty direct...will be interesting to see if Mac has matured...BB hung him out to dry last year with Patricia...no debating that but I don't see this offense being too good so it will be interesting to see if he can maintain his composure.

That was as "hot takish" of a comment as it gets. QBs & coaches yell at each other all the time, including the great Tom Brady.

Matt Light and hot takes...yeah, sure, that's his style...It wasn't yelling at players...it went beyond that and it is pretty obvious Mac knew it was an issue because it appears he has corrected it.

Mac Jones completed 35-of-54 passes for 316 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the Patriots’ 25-20 loss against the Eagles.
Outside of the first quarter where Jones was clearly flustered, he was sharper as the game went on. After an early interception, Jones locked in and showed that the offensive coordinator change did wonders. He found open receivers all the way until the end of the game where he and the Patriots just fell short. In Week 2 he’ll look to continue his resurgence against a Dolphins’ team that just gave up 34 points in Week 1.

The anomaly was the 54 passing attempts. I would not expect NE to throw the ball that much every week, and the Pats will rely more on the run than they showed yesterday. Mac should be a middle of the road fantasy QB option this year, and I doubt Jones will end up outpacing Smith or Goff. Are we looking at a true coming out party?
After some wait-on-qb bed crappings w Geno and Goff I’m already to blow some FAAB here unless this was an anomaly.

To summarize what I posted in other threads this offseason, BOB historically has a 55/45 pass-to-run ratio. IMO, a lot will depend on game script. Given the high-profile offense NE will face this year, it will be in their best interest to have time consuming drives to limit teams from racking up huge point totals (and to keep the NE defense off the field). And just to drill down on this, you have no faith that NE is decidedly more pass heavy by design? The anomaly was the 54 passing attempts. Although the #Patriots offense is still a work in progress, one area where QB Mac Jones has clearly improved through two weeks is under pressure.
Mac is currently PFF's fifth-highest graded passer while under pressure in the first two weeks.
I agree. I definitely think he would get a starting job somewhere else if they let him go. Worst weapons in football belongs to the Patriots. I’m not sure if there is a close second.Jones has looked good. He isn't the problem.
Mac has his limitations, but BB has done him no favors in his development...Patricia last year was a fire-able offense (no pun intended) for almost any other HC and he has not surrounded Mac with legit skill position players to aid in his development...the line does have its share of injuries but when healthy they are starting a player more suited to being a backup at RT and a talented yet extremely unreliable LT in Trent Brown (betting on him to play 17 games is irresponsible) so it is more than an injury situation...the tackle position should be in better shape when you have a young QB who is not overly mobile...Mac will never be elite but he is a QB that you can win with IF he is surrounded by the right talent...unfortunately BB the GM has seen fit to do otherwise since Mac has arrived and that has not helped in his development.Jones has looked good. He isn't the problem.
