To start with, when I'm talking about throwing deep (in this post), I'm referring to throws where he needs to hit a receiver in stride, 25+yards down field. I'm not including back-shoulder throws, come-back routes, etc. Here's Marcus' high school highlights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXFHH1DkfS8
I find it fascinating. He could sling it so far back then.
It's real curious that he has issues with the deep ball now. Some of his passes-on the run- are downright gorgeous throws 40 yards downfield.
Something else. They clearly have a common play where he rolls out and looks deep. Why can't the Titans do that? Is it an injury concern? He's fast enough to get away from trouble isn't he? He looks so comfy. Besides that he's clearly a superior athlete, that looks like where he can "operate" best. He can use the big arm or take off with his speed.
A simple google https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=mariota improved deep ball shows he had issues with the deep ball at Oregon too.
To use an old phrase "What gives"
(Wasn't a reply to you. Just a common viewpoint by all, including me, that he doesn't throw a nice deep ball)Bayhawks said:To start with, when I'm talking about throwing deep (in this post), I'm referring to throws where he needs to hit a receiver in stride, 25+yards down field. From what I saw, many of his deep throws required his receivers to slow down to catch the ball (not all, but enough). On some of those plays, the receivers made the catch & were able to break free, or got tackled after the catch. In college, the defenders close quicker, so those completions maybe don't get made. In the NFL, even fewer get made.
HS defenses are inferior to college defenses, which are inferior to NFL defenses. Mariota has plenty of arm strength, from what I can tell, but his timing, accuracy, touch, etc may be lacking-making his deep throws less effective.
I'm not going through the video again, nor am I going to take the time to break down the individual plays. I was responding to your original query & my point remains: high school isn't college, which isn't the NFL. Just because he was successful at something in HS doesn't necessarily mean he will be as successful in the NFL. The video was a highlight video & I only remember a few deep throws where his receiver didn't have to slow down, wait for the ball,, make a contested catch when he shouldn't have had to, etc. Its not an fluke; he has not been successful on deep throws for several years against college & NFL defenders. His HS highlight tape, to me, shows him having plenty of arm, but maybe not the consistency, accuracy, and/or touch to beat the faster defenders in the NFL.(Wasn't a reply to you. What? I'm watching again maybe I'm off here.
After a minute of text, at 1:14 is a nice one- over the shoulder and in stride during the intro.
Next is just to the TE
Screen then still pics for a minute or so
2:08. WR on left SL, over his shoulder and the DB drops it right in there. WR might slow down a little. Nah the alternate view doesn't look like he slows down
30-35 yard pass to guy cutting across back of end zone. He does slow down I think.
Run
Rolling out to avoid the rush, chucks it from his 35 down to opponents 20. WR is angling across. Hits him in stride. I could see maybe that WR went from a run to a jog to get it.
3:24 from his 47 to opp 17 over the shoulder TD, just a go route
run
4:10 he's rolling out throws on the run from his 33 to the EZ. WR angling towards corner of EZ, doesn't seem to slow down
run
mid range TD, roll out
run
5:30 in pocket WR in stride but not really, he's slowed some and turned back
5:36 what should be Titans bread N butter- a nice lob for short TD. Hopefully Plax's old coach uses something like that with DGB and Hunter.
similar play
5:43 lofts it so WR can run under it. Literally never seen him do this.
6:00 credit to WR, definitely came back in big way
2 mid range and then run
6:23 from his 15 to 50 in stride, WR is off to races
WR waiting
6:32 WR does a little stutter step slow down thing but that's common. Probably wouldn't say good throw or WR slowing down here-mulligan of sorts in this.
WR slows and adjusts right
one cut EZ route
Absolutely in stride 6:53, maybe mid not deep
A run and over the middle meh then another run
Yet another run
decent SL play from EZ and then short pass for TD
Mid definitely comes back some
7:49 in stride, smidge ahead of WR where he stretches a bit
run
nice scramble to stay alive
little behind the FB but he doesn't seem to slow down
run
comeback route or QB under pressure WR reacting
then meh
run
WR definitely slows and helps him
9:13 totally in stride
couple short throws and then a run
next two nothing special
9:49 letting WR run under it
finishes with a nice in stride pass then credit
So it's like their Kendall Wright sleeper pick last year? https://www.numberfire.com/nfl/news/5866/is-kendall-wright-a-massive-fantasy-football-value-pick#
Titans coach Mike Mularkey insists Marcus Mariota is going to run more this season.
Mariota rushed just 34 times in 12 appearances last season, something Mularkey says was partially due to injury. He insists this year will be different. "It's going to be in the game plan," the coach said. "We're going to obviously take what the defense is going to give us. ... So there's no set number of runs, but if we can — I mean you talk about a threat, a serious threat and a problem for defenses, it's him running." Nine quarterbacks attempted at least 50 rushes in 2015. It would be shocking if Mariota weren't one of them this season.

Played great with the except of the INT - McCluster was wide open but he missed him and forced a throw.
I am starting him in a few leagues and think he will have a good weekHow does everyone feel about Mariota this week? Think I'm gonna roll with him over Tyrod. I thought the Lions had a decent defense, but Luck tore them apart last week.
Because he is pretty terrible? That is maybe the fastest and most effortless release I've ever seen. Why didn't this kid go #1 again?
If he ends up being good or great, Whisenhunt will show what he can do as a HC.
Take the LApparently he wasn't asked to make difficult throws because he makes them all look easy.
Week 1 last year still stings?Because he is pretty terrible? That is maybe the fastest and most effortless release I've ever seen. Why didn't this kid go #1 again?
Not even a little bit. Watched most of their game today. He's terrible.Week 1 last year still stings?
He has no receivers but drove the team down to the 3 yard line with two minutes left, then Lewan was called for unnecessary roughness. All on him though, right?Because he is pretty terrible?
For one I posted those right at the beginning of the Bucs game, and it's not as tough when your franchise QB goes for 65%, 3 scores and 365 yards so far.I understand your being upset though, it's a tough home loss to Case Keenum.
Without walker their best players ate RBs. Hopefully wright gets his #### togetherFrom what I've seen, the Titans seem to run the ball on 1st and 2nd down 90% of the time.
Tough to put up good numbers when your only throws are on 3rd and 7.
The article below takes it a step further and basically says Mularkey is ruining Mariota's development with an antiquated scheme- "Exotic Smashmouth" is what he likes to call it- that is taking a QB who has played, and excelled, mostly in spread formations and putting him in tight, packed formations with limited receiver and route options. From what I've seen, the Titans seem to run the ball on 1st and 2nd down 90% of the time.
Tough to put up good numbers when your only throws are on 3rd and 7.
He's so terrible that his numbers are in line with a 'generational talent' so far this year. That's really funny by the way. Your guy is one of the worst right now. It's right here: QB Stats. He's even beating your boy on average yards per attempt, which you love. He's bottom of the barrel in that category. Mariota's working with an inferior cast of nobodies. Better completion %, better YPA, better rating. Less turnovers. Your guy leads the league, by the way, with 10 total turnovers. That's why Dirk wants the to run the ball more. Dirk is trying to win games. Not even a little bit. Watched most of their game today. He's terrible.
He got dropped in one of my leagues. Would you drop Osweiller for him?3 TD's, 0 INT, 60 yards rushing and TD on the road against the Dolphins.
Yes, I don't think Osweileler they are miles apart passing right now but Mariota will give you a lot more on the ground. He got dropped in one of my leagues. Would you drop Osweiller for him?
