QB Matt Ryan, IND (1 Viewer)

Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said he "anticipates" Matt Ryan being on the team for the 2022 season.

He added the caveat, "You don’t ever back yourself into a corner." Smith also left the door open for a team making Atlanta an offer they couldn't refuse. The Falcons will be waiting by the phone for a while before that offer comes through. Ryan's peak season came six years ago and he is coming off his worst campaign by yards per attempt since 2010. Ryan has a $40.5 million dead cap hit if cut this year. That number drops to $15.6 in 12 months. Atlatna will likely play a final year with Ryan under center before moving on next offseason.

Falcons restructured QB Matt Ryan's contract.

It's unclear from this report exactly how much room the Falcons will save, but it will continue to kick Ryan's monster dead cap hit down the line. Ryan was going to have a $48 million cap hit in 2022, and has only one year left of his contract. It's possible that void years could be added to spread some dead cap around. This restructure buys the Falcons some room to pursue free agents in 2022.

I wonder if this makes him any easier to trade.

It's a shame to see him wilt on the vine when IND so desperately needs a guy like this.
Supposedly the restructure hasn't been turned into the league yet. With Deshaun now in play for the Falcons, I think the Falcons will need to trade the contract as is so that Indy takes all of the cap hit for Ryan.

Well if any team could accommodate that contract, you would think IND is on a very, very short list.

PFF's Ari Meirov reports the Falcons never officially processed Matt Ryan's contract restructure.

The contract restructure was reported at the end of last week, but it never became official. If it had gone through, the extra dead money in future years would have made trading Ryan difficult. As it stands now, the Falcons would actually get some cap savings from moving Ryan, although they would still have to eat $40.5 million in dead cap. The Falcons met with Deshaun Watson on Wednesday and appear to be serious about trading for him. They will almost certainly have to move Ryan to make that happen.

does Ryan now ask for his release or seek a trade? can't imagine him coming back to Atl knowing they were after Watson and whiffed. If I'm him I'm saying 'trade, or release me" he's been a good soldier for them for years now. probable future HOFer ( check his stats - he's there, numbers are off the charts). good job Atl get rid of the one bright spot on your roster who made Julio Jones a HOFer, sold seats.way to upset the pickle cart!

I hope they trade him , sign Mayfield and become the Brownies of the South- sucktitude to the Nth degree..problem isn't Ryan. that's why Atl doesn't win titles.feckless front office.

Ryan is the consummate professional. He’ll pack a lunchbox, and come out and ball because that’s what he does.

He knows full well that this is a business, and he’s going to strap em on & nobly steward them to another high draft pick & collect some fat checks.

Maybe he didn’t love the team courting Watson, but I’m sure he understood it.

I have zero doubt of this.

His contract is two years, less than 28 mill each year. I actually think that makes him a pretty good looking bridge QB.

The question is, do the Falcons want too much for him, knowing that Ryan will play for them without complaint? I definitely believe that he will, he and Blank have a very good relationship by all accounts.

Jay Glazer tweeted Colts are trying to work it out. Ian Rapaport said the same.

I'm hoping Ryan gets traded somewhere else. Ian Rapaport will immediately tweet, "this has been in the works for a few days".

That is the difference. 100%
The Falcons have also earned more love than Cleveland has. Arthur Blank has been a Matt Ryan guy forever, and I am sure Ryan was in the loop, and knew the score, and frankly, is probably fine with going to a contender in a trade. He's also a lot older, and mature, and really was always a quiet guy anyway.

What has Cleveland done for Baker to be so loyal, when he was on a one year deal? I don't get it, really. Jimmy Haslem is not Arthur Blank. It remains to be seen if CLE is a real organization, worthy of anyone's loyalty.

Done deal, per everyone. Colts, 3rd rounder.
So, the Colts get a 3rd that can become a 2nd, and in exchange they go from Wentz to Ryan.

I'm not of the belief that Ryan is the player he once was, but he's still an upgrade from Wentz. Don't know if its enough to make the playoffs in a now much more loaded AFC but it can only help.

Ryan's got friends in every NFL city from Atlanta to Seattle, knows a dozen Offenses, calls every audible trick in the book, he'll blend right in with Indy, with any luck...he's got the Lombardy Trophy already.

If they are signing Mariota, that makes me think QB is going to be a likely option at #8.
Or 2023. MM is only 28. Arthur Smith worked with him in his 1st year in TEN. MM would be fine for a rebuilding 2022. I see no reason why they'd draft a QB now when it's a crappy QB class when they could get MM (or someone) on the cheap & lose that way too.

Dwayne's league is starting next year as an option too.

Can probably share stories with Manziel of killing the values of receivers 👍

Imagine Baker thinking Colts wanting him after just dumping another unlikeable QB. One that was better than Baker in 2021.

Adult Life
Dang man.

The punch line here is obviously, "Are you kidding? I made that all up. You know Matt. He once got lost in his own locker room."
Oops. Quoted the wrong post before. This makes much more sense.

Colts acquired Matt Ryan from the Falcons for a 2022 third-round pick.

Ryan will captain a Colts team that went 9-8 in 2021 and was a shocking loss to the Jaguars away from making the playoffs. The Colts now have their fourth Week 1 quarterback since Andrew Luck retired. Entering his age-27 season, Ryan should play at a higher level than Jacoby Brissett and Carson Wentz did, but he could fall short of Philip Rivers' play Indianapolis. The Colts supporting cast is solid. They have an elite running game but a very thin group of pass-catchers behind Michael Pittman. Still, it's miles better than what Ryan is leaving behind in Atlanta, which has been stripped down to Kyle Pitts and spare parts. The Falcons are taking on a massive $40.5 million dead cap hit by trading Ryan, but it should allow them to pursue a true rebuild. The Falcons were immediately rumored to be interested in Marcus Mariota, but they will almost certainly select a quarterback within the next two drafts. Pitts should be downgraded slightly in drafts; target share can only do so much in dysfunctional offense. Pittman and Johnathan Taylor's 2022 outlooks look slightly more positive as a result of securing a competent signal-caller.

Watson not choosing the Saints - in what is now a two team NFC South, and a much worse NFC overall - is looking like a bad choice.

Watson has 230 million reasons to disagree with you.
Sure - obviously talking about his chances to win. I'm guessing that New Orleans was willing to pay him pretty well also.

I'm not begrudging him from getting the best deal he can - that wasn't really my point.

Since Ryan was due a $7.5 million roster bonus today, I don't see a way for the Falcons to designate this as a post 6/1 trade. That means they will eat $40M against the cap and now are eating $62M in cap space this season.
