QB Matt Ryan, IND (3 Viewers)

They also need to fundamentally change the offense to make it more similar to the Kyle Shanahan O back in the day (more high-percentage throws short-intermediate to the RBs and TE position). This spread O just isn't working and yo have top give Ryan more easy outs, I remember how he used to feed Freeman/Coleman and let the YAC it up, as well as getting Austin Hooper involved a lot. He hardly uses Gurley in the passing game and Hurst (a better athlete/talent than Hooper is) used primarily as a last resort.

What they are missing is Hooper. The way their offense runs now, all those bailout plays are just not there any more. 

So, I guess I am saying the opposite.  People love Hurst but the proof seems to be in the pudding. Hooper just had a way of making the plays.  Might not pass the eyeball test but he produced.

Not to turn this into the Hayden Hurst thread... but comparing the route tree and usage says it's a scheme change. Atlanta primarily is using slot receivers (Gage Jr. and Zaccheaus) more in that area Hooper worked in, even running routes in the same area of the field. Maybe it's due to Hurst's unfamiliarity with the playbook, but Hurst definitely isn't being utilized the same way Hooper was in the sense that Hooper was schemed open constantly, especially in the Red Zone.

In order to fix Ryan, give him easier throws that use the YAC ability of the talents around him. There's a reason he won MVP passing it to his RBs almost 20% of the time.

We are different on the specifics but there's enough moving parts here to see we are in the same neighborhood. The injuries to players on both sides of the ball have dictated changes in how ATL operates and some of it has likely led to the types of examples you have provided. It is definitely not the same animal. 

 
Probably unfair but I've had him in redrafts twice. It seems like every time I'm struggling for points overall and hoping he cashes in for me, he'll come up short and throw a pick or turnover on downs. 

Schedule is pretty nice though it appears. Guess I'll just hope a coaching change helps, and pray for Julio's hammy to get better in a hurry.

 
Matt Ryan completed 30-of-40 attempts for 371 yards and four touchdowns in the Falcons' Week 6 win over the Vikings.

Ryan was in an 11-quarter touchdown drought when he found Julio Jones for a first-quarter touchdown. Jones was the missing ingredient for the entire Falcons offense in recent weeks. He adds way more big-play potential and allows more room for ancillary pieces to operate. Ryan's best play was a scramble on 4th-and-1 that resulted in a flick to Jones for a 40-yard run-and catch. When Ryan, Jones, and Calvin Ridley are fully healthy, Ryan can be jammed inside top-12 fantasy rankings. That should be the case at home next week with Detroit traveling south.

Went back and forth between Ryan and Goff, finally settling on Goff after three straight Ryan duds. Whoops!  :kicksrock:

Like teams more often than not stinking it up on Thursday Night Football, is it now a similar "thing" that you should always start offensive players the game after the coach is fired?

 
Matt Ryan completed 21-of-30 passes for 281 yards, zero touchdowns and an interception in the Falcons' 25-17, Week 8 win over the Panthers, adding six rushes for 27 yards and a touchdown.  

Ryan's first rushing score of the season was just his second since 2018. He has only 10 for his 13-year career. On the 13-yard "rumble," Ryan somehow found the edge and was able to sneak into the end zone ahead of a crawling Troy Pride after the DB fell down. Ryan entered the evening leading the NFL in passing, but tonight was the fourth time in five starts he was held to one or zero touchdowns through the air. That has been killing his fantasy value. Losing Calvin Ridley to an ankle injury isn't going to help, though Ridley has 10 days to get cleared for next week's matchup with the Broncos. With or without Ridley, Ryan will find himself on the QB1/2 borderline for that one.

Matt Ryan completed 22-of-39 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the Falcons' 43-6, Week 12 win over the Raiders.

Ryan certainly wasn't the reason the Falcons won this one, turning in a pitiful 4.7 yards per attempt while looking mostly lost without Julio Jones (hamstring) in the lineup. Calvin Ridley (6-50-1) was the leading receiver, catching his score from four yards out. Brandon Powell later caught Ryan's second score from four yards out as well. Ryan has truly been horrendous when Julio doesn't play and can't be recommended as a fantasy option outside of two-QB leagues next week when the Falcons host the Saints.

2020 Week 14 QB Review: Jalen Hurts' Eagles debut, Drew Lock running out of time in Denver and more

He’s had a roller coaster of a season, with five games grading at 83.0 or better but now four games grading below 60.0. Matt Ryan completed 34-of-49 passes for 356 yards and three touchdowns in the Falcons' 31-27, Week 15 loss to the Bucs.

It was easily one of Ryan's best games of the season, and he was able to pull it off with Julio Jones (hamstring) out of the lineup. The Falcons took a 17-0 lead into halftime after Ryan hit Russell Gage and Calvin Ridley for five- and 12-yard touchdowns before the break. But the Bucs dominated the second 30 minutes. Ryan's third touchdown was a seven-yard hookup with Hayden Hurst. He had Calvin Ridley for an open second score, but CB Antoine Winfield Jr. made a great play on the ball in the end zone to break it up at the last second. Ryan's 356 yards were his thrid-most of the season, and it was his first 300-yard game since Week 7. It's impossible to trust Ryan outside of two-QB fantasy leagues, but he should be throwing a ton again next week in a road date at Kansas City. The Falcons have no running game whatsoever.

Any chance he gets scratched this week? Im sure Falcons would love to lose out and with the trade rumors maybe they want to leave him safe and well.

Im aware their other options arent stellar or full of upside but it just worries me.

 
Matt Ryan completed 29-of-44 pass attempts for 265 yards and two touchdowns in the Falcons Week 17 loss to the Buccaneers.

Ryan played well but simply couldn't connect with any of his receivers on deep passes including Calvin Ridley who only went for 52 yards in Week 17. He ends the season with 4,581 passing yards and 26 passing touchdowns. Ryan also punched in his second rushing touchdown of the season on a QB sneak in Week 17. Ryan now has 11 seasons with at least 4,000 passing yards. With this Week 17 loss, the Falcons secure the third or fourth overall pick. That means they could be in a position to find their quarterback of the future with Ryan turning 36 years old in the offseason. However, given Ryan sustained track record of success, that seems like an outside possibility at most. Expect Ryan to be the starter for a pass-happy attack once again next year. Although he's a statue in the pocket, his volume and downfield ability will put him at the end of the QB1 conversation for the 2021 fantasy season.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports Matt Ryan and Julio Jones are "not going anywhere" this offseason.

The Falcons have the third fewest cap space (-$36.2 million) in the NFL right now, but moving on from Ryan or Jones wouldn't help their situation because of their dead cap numbers. The new coaching staff also probably wants these two around for the next two or so seasons before fully going into the rebuild. Coach Arthur Smith could elevate the Falcons offense if Jones (nine games) can stay healthy and if Ryan avoids falling off a cliff as a 36-year-old. Any speculation that Atlanta is rebuilding in 2021 can be put to bed.

Speaking Thursday, Falcons owner Arthur Blank said he would be "completely shocked" if Matt Ryan were not back with the team in 2021, 

It would be a natural time for the Falcons to move on from their soon-to-be 36-year-old statue, but Ryan's trade or release would not help the team in the salary cap department. The Falcons absolutely have to improve Ryan's protection in 2021 after he took at least 40 sacks every season from 2018-20. New coach Arthur Smith is skilled at this sort of scheming, so we would expect the necessary improvement in that department.

MATT RYAN QB, ATLANTA FALCONS

Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said the team would "bring in" quarterbacks this offseason. 

It's not exactly a stunning admission, but it confirms that the Falcons are rightfully thinking about life after Matt Ryan, who will be 36 in May. Ryan, who is signed through the 2023 season, will count for $40.9 million against the salary cap in 2021, making him an unlikely cut candidate even if the Falcons draft his eventual replacement with the fourth pick in this spring's NFL Draft. "You always bring in quarterbacks," Fontenot said. "You need to bring in quarterbacks, whether it's in the draft, whether it's in free agency, or signing guys off the street. It's so important, bring in quarterbacks a lot, build strengths." Atlanta could sign a serviceable backup for Ryan if they don't take a QB with their No. 4 pick. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Andy Dalton, Joe Flacco, and Tyrod Taylor are among this offseason's free agent signal callers.

MATT RYAN QB, ATLANTA FALCONS

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot wants to draft QB Trey Lance with the No. 4 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, while head coach Arthur Smith believes Matt Ryan has at least two good years left. 

"What I’m hearing is that [Terry] Fontenot is more focused on quarterback, and Arthur Smith believes that Matt Ryan does have two or more years left," Mortensen said, citing Ryan's durability as a reason the Falcons might forgo QB with their first rounder. Mortensen said if the Falcons draft a quarterback with the fourth pick, it will be Trey Lance. The mobile Lance, who started 17 games for North Dakota State, would likely sit behind Ryan for at least a year. Intrigue around Atlanta's first round strategy will continue until draft night.

Matt Ryan: Ryan is going to miss Jones for a lot of reasons. They spent 10 years together, during which Ryan won a league Most Valuable Player Award and led the Falcons to the Super Bowl (both happened during the 2016 season). Every star quarterback loves having a go-to receiver, and Ryan now will have to adjust to relying on other targets. Of course, it certainly helps that those other targets include Ridley, Pitts and Gage. But Jones made seven Pro Bowls and life much easier for the Falcons quarterback. His presence is going to be missed.

Fantasy Football: Impact of Falcons trading Julio Jones to Titans

Losing Jones is not good news for Matt Ryan. The alpha wide receiver’s presence made the offense operate at another last season, and it’s hard to assume that rookie tight end Kyle Pitts can bring that type of impact in Year 1.

Last season in games with Jones, Ryan posted a 90.9 PFF passing grade, 15 touchdowns, thee interceptions, a 106.4 passer rating, 8.3 yards per attempt and a stellar 21.1 fantasy points per game.

Without a healthy Jones, Ryan posted a 67.2 PFF passing grade, 11 touchdowns, eight interceptions, an 82.9 passer rating, 6.6 yards per attempt and a meager 14.5 fantasy points per game.

Don’t expect Ryan to be that bad without Jones in 2021 in a new offense and with different playmakers, but do factor it into his overall fantasy outlook. He’s going to be falling in my next fantasy football rankings update.

Matt Ryan completed 21-of-35 passes for 164 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the Falcons' 32-6 Week 1 loss against the Eagles. 

Ryan lost a fumble, took nine quarterback hits, three sacks, and had the lowest intended air yards per attempt (3.7) of any quarterback through the early slate. In other words: The Atlanta offensive line upheaval did not gel well for him in Week 1. The Falcons did not manage a drive longer than 22 yards after their first two of the game. It's easy to overreact to Week 1, but seeing Ryan's offensive line set up to face Tampa Bay next week should send a chill down your spine. He may barely be on the QB1 radar in Week 2.

Oline can't block and DEF can't stop anyone.  Falcons offense is always decent until they fall behind.  When the other team knows they have to pass it is over.  The oline is dreadful.  The rookie LG Mayfield had an all time awful days as the Philly DTs dominated.  Didn't matter which one.  It was actually even bad the year they went 28-3.  They just had no injuries all year and Shanahan masked a lot with the zone running game.  I was surprised they didn't just run more streaks with Pitts once they fell behind.

 
Matt Ryan completed 27-of-36 attempts for 243 yards and two touchdowns in the Falcons' 17-14, Week 3 win over the Giants.

Ryan did not look in sync in this game, despite ultimately delivering a win. He had a nice TD throw to Olamide Zaccheaus in the second quarter, and got some big plays out of Cordarrelle Patterson. However, he lost a fumble in scoring range. His second TD also came after dropped interception in the end zone, and then after a defensive pass interference call got the Falcons' to the one yard line. Ryan stepped up when in mattered most, passing for 53 yards on the Falcons' game winning field goal drive. Ryan will be in the QB2 mix against

Matt Ryan completed 25-of-42 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns in the Falcons' Week 4 loss to Washington. 

Ryan also had a cringe inducing 17-yard rushing attempt in the second half. Ryan, like every other QB to face Washington this season, faced little pressure against a defense that refuses to blitz. Ryan heavily targeted Calvin Ridley, Kyle Pitts, and Cordarrelle Patterson, who brought in three of Ryan's four scores. He even took a handful of downfield shots, a sorely missing element of Atlanta's offense through the season's opening three weeks. Ryan could continue to get by on pure volume next week against a soft Jets secondary. He'll be a sneaky borderline QB1 option in Week 5.

Matt Ryan completed 33-of-45 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns in the Falcons' Week 5 win over the Jets.

Ryan threw both of his touchdowns in the first half, a pair of red-zone throws to Kyle Pitts and Hayden Hurst. The Jets' pass rush struggled to generate any pressure, making it an easy day for Ryan and the offense. Ryan has rebounded from a slow start, averaging 289 yards with an 8:0 TD/INT ratio over the last three games. The Falcons (2-3) travel to Miami after their Week 6 bye.

Matt Ryan completed 19-of-28 passes for 153 yards and two interceptions before being benched in the fourth quarter for the second straight week in Atlanta's 25-0 loss to New England in Week 11. 

Josh Rosen entered the game at 19-0 and immediately threw a pick-six. Patriots D/ST fantasy managers thank you very much, Arthur Smith. Feleipe Franks replaced Rosen and added an interception of his own. The Falcons made it into two third-and-inches situations in Patriots territory and were embarrassed at the point of attack. Ryan took four sacks. It will be hard to have any confidence in Ryan next week, but the Jaguars are a plus draw on paper.

I generally agree, but to put it into perspective, in his 11 games he has FF scores of 39.9, 36, 29, 25.8, 26, 22 and is barely below players like Tannehill, Rodgers, Mac Jones, Wentz, and Carr.

Ryan could still be a good QB, in real life and FF,  when given time in the pocket. He made several very good throws last night. In the game vs Miami, he threw multiple perfect passes to Pitts and made Miami pay on a perfect bomb to Gage.  FWIW his pff grade is a respectable 81. 

if Patterson and Ridley return, Ryan could be startable in some leagues. A bad defense helps in FF.

Could be a possibility to be really good in fantasy playoffs, at least as a Superflex difference maker, if Patterson and Ridley get back on the field.

I honk Ryan is a very good QB.   I am only speaking about the current situation of the team.
