QB Matt Ryan, IND (2 Viewers)

So, it sure looks like the Falcons absolutely knew what they were doing moving on from Ryan and Julio these last 2 years.
I think it's probably a case of "better a year too soon than a year too late". He probably should have retired a Falcon but then there's those millions of dollars that makes judgement a little cloudy.

He likely still will “retire” a falcon with a one day contract.

68.5% completions, most completions in the NFL right now
24 Sacks to boot

Some teams might be willing to trade for him, Cots are going tp part ways or release him. Matt Ryan certainly isn't going to want to retire and his services might actually be wanted by certain teams right now having issues.

Indy was in a 1st Place battle with Tennessee yesterday and things didn't go their way, fine. But to just throw it all out the window at 3-3-1 seems ridiculous and I blame the owner that has a short fuse ever since he got used to having Manning around.

Patience is not even allowed apparently

His interceptions were inexcusable.

On the radio a few mins ago Greg Papa said Ryan has a grade 2 shoulder separation.
:oldunsure:

That would explain a lot.
coach Frank said that verbatim in his press conference today but you could tell that wasn’t the reason. Frank was super bummed and body language was clear he hated having to make that announcement today. This does smell of a Irsay decision.

So were the fumbles. He hangs on to the ball too long. Or at least until he fumbles it.

They were going to make that decision regardless.

I was telling people this off-season, I think on these boards somewhere as well. But two years ago when Atlanta had pick 4 and took Pitts and not a QB that a lot of people were hammering them because Ryan looked toast. Then he regressed some more in 2021.

What I was telling people is how could everyone say this guy looked to be at the end two years ago, he declined the next year, and then all I get this off-season is an absolute slew of puff pieces and comments that he's the answer all of sudden for the Colts? They even tried throwing a few Peyton like comps on him. None of it made sense.

Saying that the key to him having a shot with the Colts was the OL. The bad news is most teams in the league have OL issues. Not a lot of clean pockets to sit around in these days. If you are a QB who is not getting the ball out quickly or has good pocket movement skills you probably are not having a very good season.

Colts coach Jeff Saturday said that Matt Ryan (shoulder) will be the backup quarterback in Week 10 against the Raiders.

He also, ominously, said that quarterback is not a "closed competition" and that "whoever is best will play and each position is constantly evaluated." That doesn't sound like a team that is dedicated to playing out the Sam Ehlinger experiment. Ehlinger will be on high alert for a benching against the Raiders if he doesn't play well.

FOX NFL's Jay Glazer reports Colts coach Jeff Saturday is "having talks" about getting Matt Ryan back in the lineup.

Ryan said on Friday Ryan would be the team's backup this week. He also noted that the starting job was not a "closed competition" and that "whoever is best will play." Sam Ehlinger has struggled in his pair of starts, throwing for 304 yards and an interception. Ryan wasn't much better, but the offense did have some brief moments of success by playing fast and limiting Ryan to short throws. If Ehlinger doesn't perform well in Week 10, Ryan could be back in the lineup next week.

The Athletic's Zak Keefer expects the Colts to start Matt Ryan over Sam Ehlinger against the Raiders.

Ryan was taking the first-team snaps in pre-game warmups. Although this is unquestionably the correct decision, it is also a highly tilted one from a team suddenly at the mercy of an owner behaving in erratic fashion. It was Jim Irsay who seemed to order Ryan's benching in the first place. Sam Ehlinger predictably showed nothing in Ryan's absence, and the Colts now want interim coach Jeff Saturday to have a shot at actually winning a game or two. Ryan's insertion under would be excellent news for the Colts' entire skill corps, including even Jonathan Taylor. A better overall offensive environment can only hope the running game.

If the Colts can win a game, this is certainly a good week to do it.

Matt Ryan completed 21-of-28 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown in the Colts' 25-20, Week 10 win over the Raiders.

In a "surprise" decision, Ryan got the start over Sam Ehlinger in former ESPN analyst/high school coach Jeff Saturday's interim debut, but Saturday had been telegraphing such a move would be coming. Why not make it immediately and try to actually win a few games? It was one of Ryan's best overall performances as a Colt, and just the second where he took fewer than two sacks. The one he did absorb was a 14-yard loss on third down that helped lead to a missed field goal, but we digress. Ryan was efficient as he locked onto Michael Pittman and Parris Campbell and finally watched Jonathan Taylor appear healthy on the ground, rolling up 22/147/1. We aren't expecting a sea change in Ryan's performance, especially with Week 11 opponent Philadelphia offering what will probably be the most difficult challenge the 37-year-old quarterback faces all year.

Matt Ryan completed 22-of-34 passes for 199 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in the Colts' 17-24, Week 12 loss to the Steelers.

Ryan added four carries for 22 yards, the bulk of which came on a 14-yard scramble near the end of the game. He was also sacked four times and lost a fumble and bobbled exchange between him and Jonathan Taylor near the goal line. Until the final three minutes of the game, Indianapolis had no life on offense. Ryan came to life at the end of the game with completions of 28 and 17 yards, but it was an otherwise uninspiring performance from the 37-year-old veteran. With almost no ability to generate long plays, Ryan and the Colts' offense will be a low-floor, low-ceiling squad going forward. Fantasy managers can continue to ignore him for his Week 13 matchup with the Cowboys.

Matt Ryan completed 21-of-37 passes for 233 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions in the Colts' 54-19, Week 13 loss to the Cowboys.

Ryan also lost a fumble on the contest that appeared to be returned for the second Cowboys defensive score in the fourth quarter before being ruled down by contact. The turnovers continue to be a problem for the veteran signal caller, with the Cowboys scoring a touchdown on each of five Colts turnovers in the game. It wasn't all doom and gloom for Ryan and the Colts as they entered the fourth quarter down just two points, but the team then allowed Dallas to score the second most points in the fourth quarter in NFL history with 33 unanswered points. Questions have to be swirling up and down the ranks of the organization with the team nearing mathematical elimination from the playoffs. The Colts head to their bye week looking for answers.

Matt Ryan will start in Week 15 against the Vikings.

The last time we saw Ryan he was walking off the field in a 54-19 loss in primetime to the Cowboys. The league leader in turnovers three threw interceptions in the blowout loss and will now look to rebound in a road matchup against the Vikings. Since being renamed the team's starter in Week 10, Ryan has thrown for 875 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions while leading the Colts to a 1-3 record. Far from a good option, Ryan is the best quarterback the Colts have at this time. Barring injury, it wouldn't be surprising to see him finish out the season unless the team wants another look at Sam Ehlinger.

Matt Ryan completed 19-of-33 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown in the Colts' Week 15 loss to the Vikings.

Even with Jonathan Taylor injured and a full overtime, Ryan and the Colts' pass offense were still held under 200 yards. The loss came in embarrassing fashion, with Ryan blowing a 33-point lead going into half. Since return as the team's starter in Week 10, Ryan has led the Colts to a 1-4 record while averaging just 6.5 YPA. It wouldn't be surprising to see Colts the use Week 16 to get another look at Sam Ehlinger as their starter.

182 yards in pretty much 5 quarters against the Viking secondary is all you need to know. They have one play. 3rd and 8. Let me throw a 5 yard pass and see if the receiver can run for the first down. Nothing downfield. They need to blow up this passing game, starting with Ryan

Matt Ryan has the dubious distinction of blowing the biggest lead (28-3) in Super Bowl history, and the biggest lead (33-0) in regular season history.

i didn't get to watch the game as i don't have nfl network, but man how do you blow a 33 point lead Matty? that is quite impressive.
The Colts D let the Vikings score 36 points in the second half. They should shoulder some blame too.

Matt Ryan will be benched for Nick Foles in Week 16.

Ryan has been benched for the second time this season following last week's historic meltdown against the Vikings in which Ryan and head coach Jeff Saturday choked away a 33-0 lead. Foles is expected to start the final three games of yet another lost season for the down-bad Colts. Ryan's season -- and possibly his career -- ends on the most inglorious note possible. Acquired from the Falcons to provide some stability for the Indy offense, Ryan -- behind a terrible offensive line -- was a complete disaster from start to finish in 2022, managing 14 touchdowns to go along with 13 interceptions in 12 starts. Ryan's adjusted yards per attempt (6) was the lowest of his 14-year NFL career. With no ability to avoid pass rushers and an arm as weak as any quarterback in the NFL, Ryan's days as a starter are likely over. Foles in 2021 started one game for the Bears, completing 24 of 35 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown against the Seahawks. He can be picked up in superflex formats.

Colts QB Matt Ryan said he's open to returning in 2023.

Ryan is due $12 million in guaranteed money if (when) the Colts cut him. They'll be sure to do so before March 17th, when another $17.2 million in guaranteed money is scheduled to kick in if he's still under contract. It's financially beneficial for the 37-year-old quarterback to keep any doors for a return open until then to avoid losing out on money that is all but his. Ryan does say in an article by Stephen Holder on ESPN that he still loves the game and believes "there's a lot of good football
", although many would beg to differ on that last point. While Ryan's offensive line did him few favors in 2022, it's hard to ignore his 13 interceptions and league-high 15 fumbles that resulted in his benching twice last season. A noticeable decline in arm strength is also working against the veteran quarterback, who posted career lows in YPA (6.6) and aDOT (6.8) last season.

If I were a contending team, especially one with a young QB, I'd love to have Ryan as a backup/sounding board. I think his days as anything more than a bridge QB at best are over, but he's got a ton of value if he can swallow his pride and be a backup, likely make another 7-8 million, and maybe get a ring. Ryan replacing Minshew in Philly behind Hurts would make a ton of sense, as would SF (reuniting with Shanahan) to help coach up Lance/Purdy while still being available for a spot start if need be.

In Ryan's defense, Indy turned out to be about a worst-case scenario for him, as the OL fell apart, the running game struggled, and the WRs were never really open. Not excusing Ryan, who did play poorly, but I think Indy's problems were a lot more than just QB play.

SF makes too much sense. I imagine they can have some cap room with two QB's on rookie contracts...especially one on a 7th round deal.

Speaking Wednesday, Colts GM Chris Ballard said the team has yet to decide on the future of QB Matt Ryan with the organization.

Ryan, the fourth consecutive stop-gap quarterback in Indianapolis, was benched twice and separated his throwing shoulder during the 2022 season. The Colts hold the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft but Ballard has held his cards close to his chest regarding how the team intends to use the lofty draft capital. Ballard added, "We’ll work through it with Shane... We’re just getting the staff settled. We’ll start working through things next week." Ballard and newcomer head coach Shane Steichen have a lot to address for a franchise that has stumbled since Andrew Luck announced his retirement following the 2018 season.

Colts released QB Matt Ryan.

The long-expected, no-brainer move saves $17.2 million against the cap. Soon to be 38, Ryan was benched twice during his lone Colts campaign and no longer appeared capable of moving at an NFL level. He was essentially a mummy in the face of the rush. It didn't help that the Colts' once-vaunted line began to crumble, but Ryan's immobility only exacerbated the issue. It's possible, if not probable, someone with better blocking will decide to bet on Ryan as an experienced No. 2 quarterback and mentor, but he has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt he can no longer credibly function as a No. 1. The Colts' 2023 starter is not currently on the roster.

Surely he retires now right? Like the guy, but having a hard time seeing him as a starter anywhere, not sure he's even worth holding in a SF at this point is he?

If I’m Indy, here’s the million dollar question— would you rather spend the 4th pick on the 4th best QB in the class or trade that pick and next year’s 1 for Lamar Jackson. Obviously, the money is drastically different but I still think it’s an easy call.
