Matthew Stafford completed 26-of-40 passes for 283 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in the Rams' 23-20, Super Bowl LVI victory over the Bengals.

The Super Bowl victory is the first for a Los Angeles-based franchise since the Raiders in 1983-84. It required a grinding, marathon fourth quarter drive where Stafford found Cooper Kupp — who else? — for what would prove to be the Lombardi-clinching touchdown. Despite some hiccups — his 17 interceptions led the league — Stafford proved to be the impact addition the Rams were hoping for when they surrendered a pair of first-round picks. Although the 17th game helped, Stafford’s touchdown total (41) matched his career high, while his 4,886 yards were his most since 2012. His 67.2 completion percentage matched his career-best mark, while his yards per attempt finished above 8.0 for only the second time in 13 seasons. Although still prone to the occasional unforced error, Stafford provided the extra gear Jared Goff lacked in Sean McVay’s offense, being able to create instant offense when called upon. Never was this more vivid than his game-winning deep shot to Cooper Kupp in the Divisional Round, a pass Goff would have never pulled the trigger on. Stafford has proven more prone to nicks and bruises in recent seasons, but there is ample reason to expect him to remain an above-average starter heading into his age-34 campaign in 2022.

This Super Bowl is as much Matthew’s as it is the people of Michigan’s,” Kelly Stafford said. “He’s grown up there, they’ve groomed him to be this quarterback. He’s tough because he was there, he learned how to be leader, because he played there.

The people of Detroit are like no other,” Stafford said. “There’s nothing like Michigan people, that’s like our extended family, and I still feel that way.”

_______________

Hall of Fame quarterbacks have won 27 of the 56 Super Bowls. That doesn't include future Hall of Famers such as Brady, Peyton Manning, Roethlisberger, Brees and Rodgers, who have combined for 11 more Super Bowl victories.

Projecting...Mahomes + Matthew = 40

The other twelve?

  • Plunkett (2)
  • Theismann
  • McMahon
  • Simms (1 + 1 as reserve)
  • Doug Williams
  • Hostetler
  • Rypien
  • Dilfer
  • Brad Johnson
  • Eli Manning (2)
Stafford will finish ahead of all of the "other SB winning QBs" in counting stats with 2.5 healthy seasons.

If he makes it to his age 38 season (2026) and has the worst 5 year stretch of his career, he will be 5th-7th in most categories - no worse than 10th-11th in virtually all of them.

Zero drama moving Stafford last season.

Compare that to the transition of Favre to AR12 today, or Joe Cool to Steve Young back in the day. Or what Cousins (Mond), Tampa Bay (Trask), and Seattle (let Russ cook somewhere else) are contemplating. Houston (Watson to Mills) is a special case bc of the sordid allegations/details, but 'twas the biggest drama of them all.

No theatrics on either side of the monster trade of 2021.

This season was about writing Matthew's legacy. It is also cements the Ford family legacy as the most inept NFL ownership group in the NFL. In the 35 seasons before the Fords, the franchise had 20 winning seasons and won 4 NFL Championships. In the 58 full seasons of Ford ownership, they've had 15 winning seasons - with 1 (one) playoff victory. They were minority owners 1960-63, and bought the team outright at 11am on November 22, 1963 - 90 minutes before JFK was assassinated.

The overall first pick of the 2009 had a playoff record of 0-3 in Detroit, and ends year one After Detroit at 4-3. Sheila Ford Hamp may be different than her mum or dad. As of right now, she is 8-24-1 as Chairperson, and Matthew Stafford is a World Champion.

Congrats to Stafford and the Rams on winning the Super Bowl, but this "is Stafford a HOFer?" stuff I've seen the last 2 days is insane. Its not his fault, I just hate the media instantly jumping to these types of conclusions. He'd easily be the worst QB in the HOF, and by a wide margin. He's a solid QB, but that's about it. Carson Palmer with a ring, though I'd argue Palmer's best was better.

Its funny how fast the narrative changes based on 1 thing. This time 2 years ago, the conversation was whether Stafford was even any good, or just put up good numbers on a team that had constant garbage time, which was also silly.

If Burrow drives down the field and wins the game for the Bengals, what's Stafford's narrative? It doesn't change anything he did, just removes the ring.

He'd easily be the worst QB in the HOF, and by a wide margin
On the PFF HoF monitor thingy, he’s at 58.44. Average HoF QB is 104.14

Similar players:

Tony Romo, John Elway*, Steve McNair, John Hadl, Terry Bradshaw*, Bob Griese*, Drew Bledsoe, Boomer Esiason, Eli Manning, Joe Namath*, Mark Brunell, Jim Kelly*, Jim Everett, Alex Smith, Andy Dalton, Joe Theismann

He’s going to be 5th-7th in most counting stats, no worse than 7th-10th in virtually all stats. That’s if he plays parts of 5 more years and has the worst 5-year stretch of his career.

There are 27 modern era quarterbacks in the Hall of Fame. Several more (Brady, Brees, Ben, Eli, Rivers, Ryan, et al) will be voted in or considered before Stafford is eligible. Which is likely 2032-2035 - no one is being to asked to vote him in today.

Already in:

27. George Blanda (1949-58, 60-75)

Longevity is Blanda's calling card, and he’s best known for his days as a three-time AFL champion along with a career that stretched four decades because of his role as a placekicker.

26. Joe Namath (1965-77)

Namath made "The Guarantee" before Super Bowl III, then went out and backed it up when the Jets beat the Colts. It still stands as perhaps the most iconic Super Bowl because of the AFL-NFL implications.

25. Kenny Stabler (1970-84)

"The Snake" was inducted in 2016, after he passed away. Few quarterbacks had a more endearing, go-for-broke style, and Stabler used that to lead the Raiders to a victory in Super Bowl VI.

24. Sonny Jurgensen (1957-74)

Jurgensen enjoyed a prolific 18-year career in which he passed for 32,224 yards, 255 TDs and 189 interceptions. Jurgensen spent the early part of his career as a backup before emerging as a star with the Eagles and Redskins.

23. Bob Griese (1967-80)

Griese didn't put up gaudy numbers, but he was the leader of two Super Bowl-winning teams in Miami, including the undefeated 1972 team. Griese also was a six-time Pro Bowl selection.

22. Bob Waterfield (1945-52)

Waterfield won two championships, one with the Cleveland Rams and another with the Los Angeles Rams. He also won an MVP award and was an all-around player who contributed as a kicker and punter.

21. Bobby Layne (1948-62)

Layne won three NFL championships with the Detroit Lions in a decade in which six future Hall of Fame quarterbacks were on the field. Layne also was selected for six Pro Bowls.

20. Len Dawson (1957-1975)

Dawson enjoyed a productive career with the Chiefs that included a victory in Super Bowl IV. Dawson was another efficient passer that legitimized the AFL-NFL merger.

19. Dan Fouts (1973-87)

Fouts helped bring Air Coryell to life, and he was a mainstay for the San Diego Chargers teams in the 1970s and 80s. Fouts didn’t make a Super Bowl, but he was prolific in the form of 43,040 passing yards and 254 TDs.

18. Warren Moon (1984-2000)

Moon put up monster numbers in Houston and a few other stops during a productive 17-year career that amounted to 49,325 yards and 291 TDs. He also helped make the run-and-shoot offense with the Oilers fashionable in the 1990s.

17. Kurt Warner (1998-2009)

Warner was the ringmaster of the "Greatest Show on Turf" and won two MVP awards. Warner won a Super Bowl XXXIV with the Rams and reached Super Bowl XLIII with the Cardinals.

16. Jim Kelly (1986-1996)

Kelly mastered the K-Gun in Buffalo and led the Bills to four Super Bowl appearances, and that amounted to 35,467 yards and 237 TDs through a productive 11-year career.

15. Y.A. Tittle (1948-1964)

Tittle is one of the NFL's post-World War II icons, and he finished with 26,920 passing yards and 212 TDs. That also included seven Pro Bowl selections.

14. Troy Aikman (1989-2000)

Aikman won three Super Bowls and earned Super Bowl MVP XXVII honors as part of the Cowboys’ dynasty in the 1990s. Aikman also was a six-time Pro Bowl selection.

13. Bart Starr (1956-1971)

Starr helped the Packers win five championships during the Vince Lombardi era, and that included three straight titles from 1965-67. Starr also is best-remembered for the game-winning quarterback sneak in the "Ice Bowl" against Dallas.

12. Fran Tarkenton (1961-1978)

Tarkenton, an innovative scrambler who could chuck the ball downfield, played in four Super Bowls for the Vikings and compiled amazing career numbers with 47,003 passing yards and 342 TDs over an 18-year career.

11. Steve Young (1985-99)

Young was the 1990s version of Aaron Rodgers: an efficient passer who could make plays with his legs. Young finished with 232 TDs and just 107 INTs, and he won two MVP awards along with arguably the greatest Super Bowl performance ever, six TDs in Super Bowl XXIX.

10. Norm Van Brocklin (1949-60)

Van Brocklin’s name still pops up once in a while, and it’s because he still holds the single-game passing record from that time he put up 554 yards on Sept. 28, 1951. Van Brocklin won two championships and is still considered a pioneer in the passing game decades later.

9. Terry Bradshaw (1970-83)

Bradshaw is one of two quarterbacks on this list with four Super Bowl championships, and he was the distributor for a dominant Steelers team in the 1970s. Bradshaw finished his career with 212 TD passes.

8. Roger Staubach (1969-79)

"Captain America" won two Super Bowls, reached six Pro Bowls and played with an improv style that made him impossible not to love — unless, of course, you were a Bradshaw fan. Staubach, however, remains the standard for Dallas quarterbacks to follow.

7. Otto Graham (1946-55)

We're cool with this spot for Graham, a three-time NFL champion and three-time MVP who helped modernize the passing game with Paul Brown in Cleveland. Graham's talent stands the test of time.

6. Brett Favre (1991-2010)

Favre is the all-time ironman, and his streak of 297 consecutive starts might never be broken. The three-time MVP finished with 508 TDs and 336 interceptions and helped revive the Packers franchise with a victory in Super Bowl XXXI.

5. Dan Marino (1983-99)

Could you imagine what his numbers would look like in the present day? Marino passed for 61,361 yards and 420 TDs, and that was good for nine Pro Bowl selections. Marino didn’t win a Super Bowl, but that’s merely a footnote given his accomplishments.

4. John Elway (1983-98)

Go watch "The Drive" again. Could anybody groove it quite like Elway could? He won two Super Bowls, one MVP and threw 300 TDs. There might not be a more talented, all-around athlete to play the position.

3. Johnny Unitas (1956-73)

Unitas threw for 290 TDs, more than any other Hall of Fame quarterback who started his career in the 1940s or '50s. He’s the godfather of the modern-day quarterback, and the 10-time Pro Bowler won three MVPs and three championships.

2. Joe Montana (1979-94)

Montana has a strong case for No. 1. He was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, four-time Super Bowl winner and three-time Super Bowl MVP. If you have to win one game, would you take any other quarterback ?

1. Peyton Manning (1998-2015)

Manning will hold this spot until Tom Brady arrives, right? Manning is a five-time MVP and 14-time Pro Bowl selection. He closed his career with a Super Bowl victory, too. Few have commanded the position at this level.

Pretty douchey move by Stafford, is he drunk and just somehow didn't see something that happened right in front of him?
Lady fell 8 feet and injured her spine, as well.

Definitely not a good look. I mean, he could’ve at least feigned concern.

LOL at the efforts to hate.

It's OK you didnt see the real deal while he was buried on a Detroit team.

No need to get mad.  We all have our failings.

For the record, most underrated ever:

RB -Barry

WR - Calvin

QB - Stafford, but not for long.
For the record, all 3 of these guys deserve zero passes for being in Detroit. They all chose to be there. They all re-signed there when they didn't have to, especially Stafford as he was there for 12 seasons.

Barry Sanders is universally thought of as a top-3 RB in NFL history. He was my favorite player as a kid, as a Bears fan no less. Underrated isn't a term that could be used to describe him.

If you just wanna talk Lions, Herman Moore is underrated.

I'm in the camp of:

- He was right to not try to help her himself.
- He's only covering her bills as a result of the negative press.  But still cool that he's doing so.
- Even if you're that drunk, at least wave an arm like you kinda care a little bit.
- Doesn't deserve the backlash he's getting, but doesn't deserve the defending either.

Overall a small decrease in how I see Stafford as a person.

:lmao:

Sanders is 1 of 15 first ballot HOF RBs. Calvin is 1 of 7 first ballot HOF WRs.

And truly, truly underrated and under appreciated.

They played in Detroit, the world rarely got to see them.  And specifically never got to see them in big games with a team around them.

A la Stafford.

The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue reports Matthew Stafford could get as much as $45 million per year in new contract with the Rams.

Piecing together a new deal for Stafford is a "priority" for the Rams this offseason, according to Rodrigue, and could dictate what the team does in free agency. Rodrigue said league sources expect a new contract for Stafford, 34, to be in the three to four year range. If Stafford lands the $45 million per year, he would be paid around the same as Kirk Cousins. The Rams appear more than happy to reward the Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

Matthew Stafford said he has a better understanding of the Rams offense than he did in 2021.

It's a frightening thought for the rest of the NFL after Stafford, 34, led LA to a Super Bowl title in his first year with the Rams. "At this point in the year last season, I think to myself what I knew about this team and this offense, and it's just so small in comparison to what I know and understand now," Stafford said. "So that gives me great comfort in the fact that we can go above and beyond what we did last year." Stafford, who has taken mental reps during offseason practices to rest his arm, said the Rams are "trying out new stuff as well, we're trying out new tempos, new plays, all that kind of stuff. There's plenty to be gained, it's just less fun for me whenI don't get to do the one thing that I liked doing, which is throwing the ball." Stafford in 2021 posted the highest touchdown rate of his career (6.8 percent) and the second highest adjusted yards per attempt (8.2) in a potent LA offense. He should once again have a high touchdown ceiling in a Rams system that passes it as often as any team in the red zone.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said Matthew Stafford (elbow) will be on a "pitch count" during training camp.

McVay said Stafford being on a pitch count didn't limit him from any throwing activities on Sunday. Stafford, 34, required an anti-inflammatory shot in his right elbow this offseason after struggling with pain late in the 2022 season. He did not throw during Rams OTAs or minicamp, instead taking mental reps with the first-team offense. “Definitely knocking some rust off and feeling it again,” Stafford told reporters on Sunday. “It’s good to get out there and stress it a little bit and see how it reacts.” McVay and the Rams will be as careful as humanly possible with their franchise quarterback's throwing arm, and Stafford should be ready to throw full throttle by the opening of the regular season.

Rams coach Sean McVay said Matthew Stafford has "no limitations" in practice or game-planning.

The gist of it is that McVay believes that Stafford's elbow is fully ready for Week 1 and they won't do anything beyond the normal rest for him that they did last season. It's unsurprising news because the Rams haven't exactly been publicly concerned -- outside outlets have generated most of the real doubt -- but it is news nonetheless as we look towards Week 1. McVay said there'd be "no hesitation" in asking Stafford to throw 50 passes in a game.

The Bills have been 2.5 point favorites for the game Thursday, but when I looked yesterday the Rams were 1 point favorites. Now today the Bills are back to 2.5 point favorites.
A line only does weird stuff like that if there's questions around a major player. Stafford???

I haven't seen any of that. It's been a steady -2.5, though earlier in August it was -2.

Matthew Stafford completed 32-of-48 passes for 254 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception in the Rams' 24-9, Week 4 loss to the 49ers Monday night.

Playing behind to the equivalent of a third-string offensive line, Stafford absorbed seven sacks for the second time this season and was under intense pressure much of the night. The Rams don't have a downfield weapon with Van Jefferson (knee) hurt and Odell Beckham still a rehabbing free agent, so Stafford has resorted to peppering Cooper Kupp and Tyler Higbee with high-percentage targets in the short area of the field. He averaged a pitiful 5.3 YPA in this one and could have easily tossed three pick-sixes instead of just the one. On an attempted WR screen, 49ers rookie S Talanoa Hufanga easily read the play and jumped the route for the 52-yard touchdown return. Stafford now leads the league with six interceptions thrown and has now gone back-to-back games without a touchdown pass. This offense looks broken. Stafford will again be under big-time pass-rush heat next week against Dallas. He's merely a QB2 for fantasy.
