QB Philip Rivers, IND (7 Viewers)

Phillip Rivers had like no arm and mobility 5 years ago.

So OF COURSE he's healthy enough and fine to be a starting QB now. Charging up to make all those kids is perfect practice for being an NFL QB!
:ROFLMAO: Right?!

Dude ain't got no knees from baby making! Gotta figure dad bod is in prime form. Hasn't played in 5 years. AND HE'S A GRANDPA! Surely Kyle Trask or Desmond Ridder could offer more? Give the young guys a chance! That is one of the things wrong with the NFL...too many OLD A$$ retreads between players and coaches. Bringing people out of retirement?!?! Get some "yoot" in there!
I think its much better to go with an old guy who was great once, than a young guy we know sucks. Desmond Ridder offers nothing. Rivers is a WAY better option than he is.

I'm honestly surprised how negative the response is to this. Ideally, they would have made a move for Russ or whatever at the deadline, but I don't see why Rivers will be worse than a day 3 rookie, or practice squad types. To be honest, it wouldn't blow my mind if he went on a bit of a Flacco run.
you serious, Clark? he hasn't played in five years.

Not saying he'll be the best version of himself, just saying he'll be better than an overmatched day 3 rookie or some practice squad types, and maybe he'll surprise, given a top OL and running game.

It really is the most desperate and ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. I wonder if they called Brady.
Interesting thought. They actually signed Rivers to practice squad. Before that signing, id be curious to see the entire list of who they reached out to. No way Plan B was to sign Rivers if Jones went down from the beginning. They made some other calls id bet .

Brady had to be the 1st name on the Rolodex.

I’d actually be putting in a waiver claim if that had transpired.

Seems unlikely that the league would allow Brady to sign with another team while having an ownership stake with the Raiders.

Yeah that actually occurred to me. lol

I think you nailed it.

Rivers has probably from the date of his retirement til now is still better than anybody they could likely sign on the street for what they need.

#1 he knows the offense. that gives him a leg up on a lot of candidates and cuts out all the rookies. any candidate who doesnt have a grasp on this offense or something similer as of this moment is likely immediately out of the running
#2. hes likely good enough to be a backup even now. he just likely done or wouldnt play unless he was starting (which is fair at that point in his career). this isnt a long term stint. its a few weeks. and I think Rivers will be happy to do it.
#3 I doubt a college kid with no career starts can outperform him on such a short turnaround he may have to start this week. There are literally likely only a couple people capable of doing this and he is one.

you could make an argument for Kap but I dont think the offense Kap ran in San Fran was similar enough to the offense they run in indy and hes been out of football a lot longer.

I could see Fitzpatrick being an option. I think hes smart enough to do it and has played in a lot of different offenses. he could probably do this too.

not sure what other legit options they got.

I'm not expecting much, and I doubt the Colts were expecting to have as good of a record as they currently do coming into this season. That is why they are making this move.

Rivers is their best and only chance at continuing the run. The alternative is to just give up and throw away their 8-5 record.

Philip Rivers sucks. He just does.

Sure, but they are desperate.

Unless Brett Rypien has made some progress we don't know about, I say why not?

He's very well-rested, which is what you'd hope for for a 44 YO.
Past the trade deadline, so somebody out of the league is the only option. Might have been nice to see Ryan Fitzpatrick (43) add a 10th team to the resume, I guess.
History with Steichen helps tremendously, of course.

It's not going to work, but I can certainly see why they are trying.

And I think anybody with a soul would love to see it work.

I doubt this is even a "legit" option. It's an option and RIvers is still chasing a ring.

The truth is Rivers didn't really have a "marino" like injury that sidetracked him. More than anything else the question is "is he in shape" and "what's his arm look like"? Assuming both are decent it could still work or it may end up being like that Marino Pepsi commercial where he and rice and emmitt try to make a comeback...

One of my buddies from NCSU is incredibly excited.

We're both a couple years older than Rivers. He's always told himself that he wasn't old yet, as long as Rivers is still playing football.

What a wonderful turn of events!

I have vivid memories of him being super washed. The last couple times I saw him play though. Perhaps I miss remembering, but his retirement was pretty predictable.

The man has 10 kids. He is not well rested. Both the process of making them and the process of caring for them can be exhausting. I’m just saying.

Just what in the **** is he giving up just to play one more game?! (HOF + 5 more years?) I say I love this and anyone who loves football should. If this happens he will be on pace with AAron Rodgers for a HOF berth. Just wow.

Don't know if it has been brought up, but Rivers and Steichen have quite a history, 8 seasons together. They have remained close over the years and Rivers is very familiar with Steichen's system. This would be really cool if it works.

His arm is rested though, other than some light throwing with the HS team.

Speaking of the kids, his wife is probably pushing him out of the house at this point.

She did it herself for almost 2 decades, with some other help, I'd imagine. 2020, he retires. Throws a wrench in her system. He's supposed to bring in the money, not hang around the house all day messing up her flow. Probably tried some hobbies and that didn't work. Maybe he wanted to get into breadmaking or something, and she'd had enough.

Wives of retired men are constantly trying to get them out of the house and out of the way. No reason this would be different.

It's either this or the Moose Lodge, and this one pays.

P Rivers arm was DONE. That was 5 years ago.
Was it? He averaged 7.6 YPA his last season, which was in line with his 7.8 career average, while also having the 2nd highest completion percentage of his career. He was still a top-15 QB in the NFL when he retired. His last year, he was basically what Jared Goff is today.
well for fantasy he was washed. because if you are not a top 10 QB you're useless unless playing superflex.

but in real life he was a solid QB right up to the end.

No not a superbowl winner, but certainly at least an average to slightly above average starter.

I, for one, I’m incredibly interested in seeing how well he plays. He is one of my favorite red asses of all time. He and Jeff Kent both have busts on Mount redassmore.

I think B Rypien should get his chance. Colts face the Seahawks and Texans(week 18) two of the best defenses in football.
IF he survives that I'll come back in here and eat my crow. Until then I'm out.

The thing I’m most interested in seeing is rivers getting up after taking a sack. I remember being 44.You could probably time it with a sundial.

They needed to find a qb that knows the offense, they needed to add someone, anyone who could start in a pinch, like now or after Rypen. They have to try to improve on the fly and very late. Possibly a smart move. I just hope he can back the D up enough to give Taylor some room and check down to his RBs often.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Colts QB Philip Rivers has “a very real chance” to start Week 15 against the Seahawks.

I've joked in this thread just because I seems like movie or something. I'm still in shock they even signed him to the practice squad? He might start? OMG. I'll be cheering for him though. Who wouldn't.

I think there were better FA's to sign than old man Rivers. It was perplexing to me so he must know something.

But I get it, he's trying to bolster his resume' and the Colts are loyal to a fault. Much like HSG, don't really think it's going to work out but @FarFromHome is also correct that his stats weren't horrible 5 years ago so maybe there's a chance.

Seahawks defense is no joke. This is suicidal.

God I hope it happens.
