Well didn't watch the whole game but two of the picks I saw seemed like Rivers just taking chances to get his team back in the game. On the fumble his line was swamped. Not sure when he got the hand injury. The phins defense was on high octane it was crazy.

It must have occurred late in the game although I'm guessing if the game was closer he probably would have stayed in. At the point he exited there was no reason for him to be in there any way.

Philip Rivers was not pulled from Sunday's loss at Miami due to his hand injury.

Rivers dinged his right (throwing) hand a bit, but the team expressed no real concern about it. He left the game late in the third quarter because the Chargers were down 37-0 at the time. Rivers has an ideal bounce-back spot following the Week 10 bye as he gets the Raiders at home.

That last performance may be a season killer but he has been great all year long otherwise.

Looking for a rebound.

Next year I do think SD needs to draft an elite 1st round WR finally to get him some help.

Its very difficult for the Chargers to win across the Rockies. Even the 2006 Chargers who went 14-2, they were 3-2 across the Rockies. Its expected for them to go to Miami and lose. They always seem to lose at Miami. What was surprising was going to Buffalo and winning. Their last 2 games have been over the Rockies and they are 0-2. That's no shock to anyone who follows the Chargers.

The Chargers will be left for dead because of the Dolphins loss and now they will probably blow out their next 2 opponents at home. Then there will be hype going into the Ravens game and the Chargers will get blown out because its in Baltimore. Then everyone will dump on the Chargers again. Then everyone will pick the Patriots the next week and the Chargers will beat them because that's in San Diego.

Then the bettors will be all confused, always betting on the Chargers when they lose and betting against them when they win, and its because they are basing their bets on their performance in the previous game and ignoring home / road tendencies.

 
What's really impressive has been the 49ers run over the past 4 seasons. They are road warriors. That is so difficult to accomplish. Maybe its not talked about enough but it is something to appreciate. Even this year, the 49ers are 5-4. But they are 3-1 across the Rockies! They are only 2-2 at home, with losses to the Bears and Rams. After a trip to New York this week, the 49ers are on the west coast for the rest of the season and they get Aldon Smith back.

Speaking Monday, Chargers coach Mike McCoy denied that Philip Rivers was playing through a rib injury.

Antonio Gates accidentally let the cat out of the bag that the Bolts haven't been properly listing Rivers on the injury report, but McCoy is doing his best effort at damage control. McCoy said Rivers hasn't missed a "snap" in practice, and hasn't been receiving treatment. We're sure Gates was telling the truth, but it's largely irrelevant. Rivers hasn't appeared to be encumbered on the field. It's possible the Chargers will be fined, but the NFL doesn't usually pursue these matters aggressively.

(November 24, 2014 3:55 PM EST) For the first eight weeks of the season, Philip Rivers looked like a must-start Fantasy quarterback, even putting together a stretch of seven straight games with multiple touchdown passes. Tight end Antonio Gates was on the receiving end of nine of them.But in four weeks since then, nothing has gone right for them. Though he got his yardage back up to a respectable level, Rivers had his third straight game with no more than one touchdown pass Week 12 against St. Louis, most likely confining him to the bench in standard 12-team leagues for at least another week. And Gates probably belongs there with him.

As critical as Gates was to Rivers' success in the early going, perhaps it's no surprise he's struggling now. He was targeted only twice in Week 12, catching both balls for 14 yards, and is averaging 2.7 catches for 24.7 yards during Rivers' three-game drought. And of course, he has no touchdowns.

It's not exactly a chicken-and-egg scenario. Whether or not health is a factor, as has been rumored, Rivers' struggles have most likely led to Gates' and not the other way around. But because their fates are so closely tied, you'll need to see Rivers get back on track before you can fully trust Gates again. Tight end being a much shallower position, though, Gates isn't the clear sit Rivers is.

And San Diego's traveling cross-country, ie like the Miami game.

I dunno, I just had this idea that SD historically does poorly on the east coast.

 
I picked up Sanchez a few weeks ago and have been playing him over Rivers since. Sanchez hasn't set the world on fire but he's been more productive than Rivers. Going into the playoffs next week Im not feeling at all comfortable with either (but especially Rivers). I agree that his schedule doesn't look very encouraging. Eli is on our waiver and I may just pick him up for the playoff run - at least his schedule looks juicy.

Rivers just does not look the same since he was reportedly injured. And neither does the SD offense.

 
Maybe Rivers would play better if they had a mismatch in the slot they could exploit. You know like a 6'6 freak with 4.3 wheels. Hard to find those guys though. Maybe they'll draft one next year.

Exactly what I did. Thanks for getting me to the playoffs, Rivers but you're riding pine the rest of the way.

Eli is available in my league too. My waiver claim is in.

Ok what is going on here:

CBS has Rivers ranked 27th this week, right between Bortles and Carr.

FBGs has him at 15, 11 & 22.

Statistically Bal should be a good matchup. It's SD going to the east coast and the recent performances?

east coast vs a 7-4 team and injured ribs = bench

 
I've had kap in over him all week because of the east coast thing. But I think I'm going back to rivers. Damned if I do damned if I don't with these two schmucks

 
Shouldn't have been so worried I guess, by the numbers the matchup was good, Rivers has just not been producing and the east coast thing seemed like a big red flag. No real options.

After benching him last week, almost costing me a playoff birth, I think I will ride him out. It was good to see him get back on track against Baltimore. Instills some confidence.

 
Well I rode him & I will likely exit the playoffs after that final pick in the Denver red zone. Rough day, I guess I was expecting a shoot out but then again rivers had 2 goal line opportunities that turned into 3 points.

A league source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter that Philip Rivers is "battling a back injury that is bigger than people realize."

Rivers has been playing banged up for a while now. A few weeks ago, Antonio Gates revealed that his quarterback has a "very severe rib injury" and now Schefter is exposing a back issue. Rivers (chest) did not practice on Tuesday or Wednesday, but will almost certainly be fine for Saturday's game at San Francisco. We wouldn't adjust any projections.

He was drafted around QB15 on average this year and is currently sitting QB10 in fantasy points. If he stays there, it will mark the sixth time in the last 7 years he's been a top-10 fantasy QB.

If by "elite" you mean expecting him to duplicate his QB3 showing of last year ever again, then no. But in general you don't get to draft guys like that around QB15, which is right around where I expect to get him again next summer, because people are dumb.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Philip Rivers has a bulging disk in his back, and offseason back surgery "may be (an) option."

Rivers has been playing through significant pain for more than a month. It's been borne out in his on-field play, although Rivers was still able to rally back for a Saturday night win over San Francisco in a gutty and highly impressive performance. Rivers is not in danger of missing the Chargers' Week 17 game at Kansas City. San Diego remains squarely in the playoff hunt. For as long as he's been in the league, Rivers has been one of the toughest players in football. He's even played through a torn ACL before.

Rivers played in all 16 games once again last season, but a bulging disk in his back clearly hampered him late. He had a 20:5 TD-to-INT ratio in the first half of the year and an 11:13 rate in the second half. "At this point, the back injury is not requiring surgery," the 33-year-old Rivers said. "We'll kind of revisit it in a month or so. But everything is improving. I'm back to my regular workouts and running around." He's entering the final year of his contract in 2015.

"Honestly, nothing," was Rivers' response when asked if there was anything that would change his mind. Rivers has also changed course on the Chargers' stadium issue. Previously, he said it wouldn't affect talks. Now he says it will. "What we’ve established here with my growing family is hard to recreate," Rivers said. "The good thing is I’m not under contract in a year where we’d potentially be in Los Angeles." For his part, Chargers GM Tom Telesco declined to unequivocally say that Rivers wouldn't be dealt. "I don’t like Philip as our QB, I love him," Telesco said. "And I’ll go to war with him." Per reporter Kevin Acee, there's been speculation in league circles that the Bolts could target Oregon QB Marcus Mariota. Rivers' San Diego status is a back-burner issue that could begin to boil.
