The Buffalo News reports the Bills are not pursuing Philip Rivers.

Vic Carucci's report comes via "multiple sources." GM Doug Whaley says he's had "no conversations" with the Chargers. Rivers' future has become a topic of debate after he said he wants to play out the final year of his contract without an extension, but Chargers GM Tom Telesco has said dealing his franchise quarterback "(isn't) even on our radar." The Bolts have been loosely connected to Oregon QB Marcus Mariota, but the smart money remains heavily on Rivers remaining in San Diego for 2015.

"He's our guy," Telesco said. "Like I've said before, we'd like to extend him. And when he's ready to do that, we'll get moving on it." Telesco's comments weren't prompted by media speculation, but rather Rivers' own words. Rivers has said he wants to play out the final year of his deal without an extension, and that "nothing" will change his mind. Rivers is concerned about the Bolts' potential move to Los Angeles. A trade almost certainly isn't happening, but next offseason will be fascinating if Rivers is steadfastly against signing an extension. That could force the Bolts to franchise tag a quarterback who turns 34 in December. That wouldn't sit well with an 11-year veteran.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport intimates the Chargers have left open the possibility of trading Philip Rivers.
The Chargers have made it clear they don't want to trade Rivers. "But what I have not heard, is we will not trade Rivers," were the words of Rapsheet on Path to the Draft. It may seem like a stretch, but general managers deal in this sort of doublespeak all the time. It's possible Tom Telesco has deliberately left himself some wiggle room in the event his franchise signal caller is shipped out. Although it's hard to picture Rivers in another uniform, his public comments on his Chargers future were far more direct than we're used to hearing from players.

We're still fuzzy on exactly why Rivers is so against playing 120 miles up the freeway, but this isn't some narrative penned by the media. Rivers has told the team he'll be playing out the final year of his contract and his confidant at the Union-Tribune, Kevin Acee, believes the veteran quarterback won't be back if the team moves to L.A. The Chargers' rumored interest in trading up for Oregon QB Marcus Mariota continues to gain steam.

In other words, Rivers forcing his way out of San Diego isn't just about relocation fears. Per Cole, the Chargers are "extraordinarily concerned" about Rivers' physical condition, as well, and will most likely package him in a deal for the Titans' No. 2 overall pick. Cole reports that Rivers would "love" to play out his career for the Titans and ex-Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt. The smoke continues to build toward a Bolts/Titans blockbuster, but it doesn't yet appear inevitable.

SD is paying him nearly $18mil this season, and if(when) SD franchise tags him next year he'll be making $20mil next season. THAT qualifies as not getting payed now!? Lol

It appears the Chargers don't want to give him a long-term deal (at least not what Rivers considers fair market value). That would explain a lot of Rivers' statements.

 
Paying $100 mil to keep a 34 year old QB until he's 38 may not be the best move for a cash strapped franchise.

That does make sense. I recognize the name but don't know anything else about him in terms of reputation. It did seem strange that he would have an incendiary quote from both the Rivers side of things and the front office side of things that nobody else has. Neither Rivers or the front office tend to communicate as claimed in the quotes. At least not in front of anyone that would be a reporter.

So maybe the quote is third or forth hand, and we all know how much can change when it's not from the source. Or it could be complete speculation and/or BS.

I agree he's not a professional analyst but the Jets came within a TD of the Super Bowl his first year there.

Truth be told, he did a wonderful change in his leadership and the face he put forth over the last two years. Markedly better.

There's been an avalanche of smoke around this rumor, stemming from Rivers' refusal to move to Los Angeles and the Titans' alleged desire to move out of the No. 2 hole in the draft. We don't doubt beat man Michael Gehlken at all, but it wouldn't be the first time a reporter has been lied to a week before the draft. Rivers will continue to be linked in Marcus Mariota trade-up scenarios until the first round is in the books.

NBC's Alex Flanagan tweeted Saturday that she's been talking to "more and more people" who believe rumors of Philip Rivers being traded by the Chargers "have legitimate legs."

As Flanagan noted, the Titans "need Rivers," in order for beleaguered GM Ruston Webster and coach Ken Whisenhunt to save their jobs. The Chargers would be a good fit for Marcus Mariota, going to a coach in Mike McCoy who's repeatedly shown the ability to craft his offense to maximize his quarterback's strengths. Any deal of Rivers to Tennessee would likely require a long-term agreement between the team and Rivers. The Titans would have to have that assurance from Rivers' camp before executing the trade. Rivers is entering the final year of his contract.

Appearing on SportsCenter Thursday, ESPN's Jim Trotter said to "bet the farm" that Philip Rivers will stay with the Chargers.

Both Trotter and Adam Schefter have reported a Rivers trade is no longer on the table. Per Trotter, the Chargers' focus has shifted toward upgrading their "team speed" on defense. Trotter did allow for the possibility of San Diego using the No. 17 overall pick on either Todd Gurley or Melvin Gordon.

So is this thread just turning into a tragic opera of exactly how out of touch Acee is with the Rivers situation... or anything related to football really? It's amazing how many of these "hot takes" on Rivers were all launched by a single pinhead of informa... Acee based info-tainment. Has anyone ever seen LHUCKS and Acee at the same place at the same time?

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Chargers are "optimistic" about signing contract-year QB Philip Rivers to an extension.

In March, Rivers said "nothing" could change his mind about not signing an extension, but his tone has softened dramatically in recent weeks. Perhaps Rivers has come around on the idea of playing in Los Angeles, or believes the Bolts won't bolt San Diego. Rivers' attitude adjustment has coincided with the de facto end of trade season. Where he once appeared intent on playing hardball, Rivers now seems likely to sign an extension with the only team he's ever known.

Contract-year QB Philip Rivers says it would be "awesome" to finish his career with the Chargers.

Alas, Rivers said there's "nothing new to report" in contract talks. Rivers created a firestorm earlier this spring when he directly said he wouldn't sign an extension, but he's seemed to have a change of heart. At the very least, he's being more diplomatic in public. The Bolts want to lock Rivers up with a deal that will keep him with the team through the end of his career.
