simple... IND must've been UNCLEAR on Sam's role.
Also, Denver local radio thinks DEN likes Sam so much that during last off-season, some were advocating on trading away Jared Stidham. Speculation is that Stidham will be too expensive to keep at some point and they'll make Sam the #2, until he's too expensive to keep. Zach Wilson got $6mil from Miami after leaving DEN.
I think there's also a financial reason to stick with an 11-2 team that is 100% going to the playoffs vs. a team that could make it but will probably miss out.
i'm ignorant, but a quick search says that practice squad players continue to get their weekly salary (minimum $13,000) during the post-season
but don't get the post-season win money that active roster players get. I think I remember HCs promoting practice squad players, but not activating them on game day, so they'd qualify for bonuses and rings... which is pretty neat of them.
depending on the contract he could've negotiated with IND, multiple active roster paychecks from them would exceed whatever he got from Denver by a large margin and still more than even if he was promoted to Denver's active roster.
I think if money was a factor (and it is), it's because Sam (I'm guessing) figures his future in the NFL will be more profitable staying with Sean Payton a little longer than moving on already?
I think IND was just unclear and Ehlinger has a path to financial success with Sean Payton. Sam could be Payton's next Taysom Hill.
