QB Teddy Bridgewater (2 Viewers)

So some journalist found a few good plays that remind him 'how good he was'.  I'm sorry he was ok, maybe close to decent but he really wasn't that great.
There was ample he is about to break out buzz the summer of the injury. Sure, buzz is intangible, but there's good reason that team took his injury as hard as it did.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Jets want a "significant" return if they're going to trade Teddy Bridgewater.

Per Rapsheet, no team is viewing Bridgewater as a starter in trade talks at the moment. There just haven't been any significant injuries at the position around the league to open up one of the 32 jobs for Bridgewater. With demand low, the Jets may be wise to sit on Bridgewater into the regular season.

Only way he gets traded is if someone gets hurt.  Don't think Jets are paying him that much so they'll just hold onto him.

The Jets have their QB of the future and a veteran backup, and they have an immediately tradeable commodity that would allow them to turn a small one year contract into at least a solid pick if not a little more.

Sure, if a starter goes down AND that team believes Bridgewater can step right in and be their best option, great, they'll cash in.  But they're also risking overplaying their hand and just watching him walk away for nothing after this year.  They shouldn't wait too long to do it.

Looking at next years free agent and draft crops me thinks they could recoup quite the comp pick if no one will pony up for Teddy now.

I might be wrong, but I thought I read something about it being very unlikely that they'd get any comp picks for him at all.  Admittedly I don't know how that works or what it'd be based on.

I think the formula is still secret, but from what can reasonably be drawn from previous comp pick awards Teddy is eligible. It really just depends on the size of his next contract and how many free agents the Jets would bring in.

Yeah, good move for both.  Let him learn a system, and if he's healthy that's one heck of an offense down there in 2-3 years when Brees is done.  Bridgewater, Kamara, Thomas.

If you have the roster room, Brees+Bridgewater I have to think is a solid dynasty QB1 going forward.

Rotoworld take:

Saints acquired QB Teddy Bridgewater from the Jets.

The Jets needed to find a taker for Bridgewater with Sam Darnold ready to take the reins for Gang Green and veteran Josh McCown serving as his mentor. Bridgewater also wants to play, so the team sends him to New Orleans where he'll enter a culture that could develop him even more with the possibility of taking over under center when 39-year-old Drew Brees eventually retires. Preseason standout Taysom Hill will be the Saints' third QB, while Tom Savage is likely a goner.

The Jets got a 3rd. Shrewd move since they didn't need him.

Jags should have been on this.

Jags or Saints should have just gotten him free in FA like the Jets did though.

How are the Saints going to pay him enough to stick around as the backup next year?
Brees has talked about retirement.  He hasn't said when, but he's talked about it.  He also turns 40 in January.  And the Saints traded away their 2019 #1.

They'll make it work.  If the knee holds up then he's the starter come 2020 and if injury or retirement dictate, sooner.

They gave up a 3rd rounder.  Did they work out a new contract with him?  He's UFA next year.
Not that I've seen reported anywhere.  There must be one behind the scenes with his rep or something, though.  Why give up a third (when they already don't have a first next year) for a guy to be a one year backup?

Exactly.  That's personnel malpractice if they gave up a 3rd without a new contract in place.

Let's have this conversation after NFL defenses start game planning the rookie QB in the regular season.
The Jets are looking at Darnold as a long term investment - I don't think they have any serious hopes to compete for the Super Bowl this year. Starting Bridgewater didn't really make any sense for them since he was only signed for one year.

The hope is likely that once he learns the system and likes the staff, teammates, city, etc. they would have the inside track on signing him.
That's a lot to pay for an inside track.  If Brees retires next year (which apparently he will if they win the SB), they'll still have to sign Teddy long term.....and he'll now have all the leverage in those talks.

Yeah I'm basically on your side with this. I don't necessarily get it from the Saints side so I'm trying to guess what their motivation is. As a Jets fan I'm happy with the deal.

This year's QB draft class was deep and so-far the rookies are looking 'pretty decent'.

I would have to guess that next year's QB crop isn't looking nearly as good so those speculating that Teddy is insurance for Brees retiring are probably on the right track.

I think this is likely a signal from the Saints that they know Brees has a very short time to retirement (1 to 2) and they want to groom Teddy to takeover.  Pretty cool.

Saints aren't going anywhere in the playoffs without Brees. They just flushed a 3rd rounder down the toilet.
They felt they were going to have to draft Brees' replacement next year anyway. That 3rd could either be Teddy Bridgewater or whatever QBs fall into the very low second round in 2019.

Bridgewater is not going to command a Keenum* or Bortles** contract just yet. Maybe he gets extended a year or two now ... and then if he blows up, gets into position for a $30-35 million/year contract (maybe $80 million guaranteed?) in 2021.

...

* Keenum's contract with Broncos:

Case Keenum's Broncos deal is for two years, $36M, of which $25M is fully guaranteed at signing. He gets a $6M signing bonus, a fully guaranteed $8M 2018 salary and a $4M 2018 roster bonus. His $18M 2019 salary is guaranteed against injury, and $7M of it is guaranteed at signing.

** Bortles' contract with the Jaguars:

Jacksonville has signed quarterback Blake Bortles to a three-year contract, the team announced. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported the contract is worth $54 million, including $26.5 million in guaranteed money. The new deal replaces Bortles' current contract, which had one year remaining on it via the fifth-year option included in his rookie contract.

Wait -- is Bridgewater's contract up after 2018 or after 2019? I've seen a reference (local draft-analyst tweet) that he has two years left on his deal.

EDIT: Never mind, it's one year -- Bridgewater's contract details.

He signed a 1 yr deal for $6M.

There’s no way NO trades a 3rd without a deal already in place that extends that contract.

That's what we're telling ourselves down here

Baseball teams sometimes "rent" players for a year or half a year ... but I can't recall an NFL team ever intentionally doing that.

But if you're Teddy and fought back the way he has, do you sign on to be a backup for another year or two beyond this year when you're set up to try and land a starting job next year?

Eh backup and heir apparent for the Saints starting QB gig in 2 years is pretty sweet, can't find that just anywhere. And there's recovery time still plugged in most likely. Seems hard to find a better situation.
