That TD to Benjamin was an absolute missle.

JIMMY GAROPPOLO: C
Definitely looked better and more confident than he did last week against the Chargers, when he was skittish and innaccurate on almost every play. Against the Raiders, Garoppolo at least seemed willing to get hit -- he took two big hits when he ran for a touchdown, which was a nice play. And as a passer, he was OK. Posted a 87.8 passer rating against a bad defense that sat most of its starters. Garoppolo was far from lights out, but it seems clear he will start Week 1. Still, l don't expect him to play well against an NFL defense playing all its starters in a regular season game. Call me cynical. The 49ers should continue to use a two-quarterback system until Lance is ready to take over full time, because Garoppolo will only break your heart.
TREY LANCE: C-Minus
Split time with Garoppolo on the first-string offense, and Lance's mere presence on the field immediately improved the run game even though he mostly handed off. He eventually scored a rushing touchdown and began scrambling when necessary, which is a good sign of improvement. But he still fired short passes too hard and missed easy throws he should have hit. He finished the game 6 for 13, and technically his receivers dropped 3 of his passes, so he should have been 9 for 13, which would have been good. But Lance's passes are extremely difficult to catch. His receivers will continue to drop lots of throws until he takes some velocity off them.
I don't know that most people thought that he'd win the job outright in training camp. I know I didn't. I think this a good step to getting a permanent role. If Hill was a decent QB he'd have the job outright this year but he can't throw the ball...I don't think Lance has that issue. I'd rather him get on the field with the opportunity to make plays vs. waiting for an injury or a team losing streak to get a chance to play.As someone who has both these guys in SuperFlex, I am not at all a fan of the platoon approach.

TREY LANCE QB, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said rotating Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance will "always be an option" this season.
Shanahan said the team had practiced with the QB rotation -- with Lance subbing in for Garoppolo sometimes on every other play -- and were pleased with how it worked Sunday against Vegas. “Whether it’s in their mind or not, that’s up to them,” Shanahan said of opposing defenses. “But we’ve got two guys who can play. And we’ve been doing it in practice a little bit, wanted to do it out there in the game. And I think it’s always going to be an option.”

All that makes sense, and I expected him to sit awhile. I'm just selfishly complaining about neither of them really being very useful starts during the platoon period.I don't know that most people thought that he'd win the job outright in training camp. 49ers’ QB Trey Lance has a small "chip" in his finger and is expected to miss about a week, per HC Kyle Shanahan.
Actually decent news if you're still yet to draft. While this probably pushes his starting gig back a bit, it probably also helps getting him a bit cheaper in drafts.
I said it in the NO thread so I'll repeat it here... A true qbbc in the NFL would be the most awesome thing. It has a 2% chance of working, but if it did it would be the greatest show we've seen since the wildcat was new.
I think it's just a matter of the NFL being a copy cat league and there only being a certain amount of practice time available for the rest of the offense to get used to the styles of two different quarterbacks. This is conventional wisdom, but I don't know why this is necessarily true. Mobile QB for running situations, regular QB for passing situations. Then mix and match. I think it's an interesting idea.
If you're not getting a top 5-10 QB, instead of investing $30mil per year in a Kirk Cousins why not go get Nick Foles and Tyrod Taylor for half as much. Then play the defenses weakness; also give the opposing coaches a bunch more stuff to prepare for.
Like I said, I think it's an interesting idea. The Pats should try it this year too.

Why do we even bother interviewing coaches and players?
Because some coaches like Urban Meyer botch the interview and say something dumb? Why do we even bother interviewing coaches and players?
Trey Lance (finger) remained "limited" on Thursday.
“He’s still limited,” OC Mike McDaniel said plainly. “He looked good, but we’re very hesitant to get ahead of ourselves. ... You just have to let the week progress and see how it plays out. He looked good throwing the ball today and moving around. What does that mean for Sunday? We still have a practice to go before that. Hopefully there’s no setbacks and we’ll move from there.” We know Lance isn't starting in Detroit, but it is unclear if he is ready to be cut loose in a Taysom Hill-type capacity for his NFL debut.

Trey Lance (finger) has been removed from the Week 1 injury report and will play against the Lions on Sunday.
Lance practiced on a limited basis on Friday, but the fact that he isn't listed on the injury report means he should be good to go. San Francisco brass never seemed overly concerned about Lance's injury, but it's nice to see him officially back. Jimmy Garoppolo will get the start, but Lance could mix in a little bit as we saw in the 49ers' preseason finale.

Nice writeup:
"Trey Lance was 0 of 0 for 0 yards and didn't throw a touchdown pass Sunday in the San Francisco 49ers' 30-28 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He did not throw an interception, didn't fumble and was not sacked. Lance added one rushing yard on one carry and scored one touchdown on the ground."
Well, they lost. The song seems to remain the same:
Lance will get his time, but as long as the Niners are either winning or staying in games (and Jimmy G is healthy), I can't imagine Shanahan has any need or desire to throw Lance in for more than a few designed plays. Jimmy wasn't great last night, but good enough when it mattered.
Yes, but hard to say that was on Jimmy. He put them ahead at the end, and it was the defense that didn't keep Rodgers from getting the Packers' offense into scoring position.Well, they lost. The song seems to remain the same:

He looked brutal at times. Like when he spun around and threw the ball backwards, but didn’t think it was a live ball.Yes, but hard to say that was on Jimmy. He put them ahead at the end, and it was the defense that didn't keep Rodgers from getting the Packers' offense into scoring position.
It's not about what you think the upside is. Because I think the time probably is coming. They gave it to him on the goal line at the end of the 2nd quarter- high risk situation and they trusted him to run it in. If he has those designed runs like Cam Newton did in his peak, man, that's some nice fantasy production.Scooped him back up before the game in 1QB 14-team re-draft, partly because of Josh Allen's slow start. Was rooting for Jimmy G to fail on the last drive to crank up the heat. Would like to keep him stashed, but afraid I will come to the same conclusion that the upside isn't worth tying up a roster spot in a 1QB league with 6 bench spots.
Oh yes, Jimmy is terrible. Only has a 101 qb rating this year.He looked brutal at times. Like when he spun around and threw the ball backwards, but didn’t think it was a live ball.
True. Keep away is part of it, along with the trade chip aspect, even in a 1QB. The question is when does it happen, and how good does it look when it happens? If it's fairly immediate top 10 fantasy QB with a sexy skillset to do even more, that's a legit trading chip that should have appeal for a number of teams in the league. It's not about what you think the upside is. It's about keeping him away from another owner who can add a player that can challenge your Josh Allen fantasy output in head-to-head.
