Mark Sanchez took the Jets to back-to-back AFCC games in his first two years in the league (not sure if anyone else can make that claim). Sometimes teams win in spite of their QB.

So, Jimmy Garoppolo is Mark Sanchez now?

The guy who's 33-14 with 68% completions, 5% TD rate, 2.6% INT rate, 8.3 y/a

Is the same as the guy who's 37-36, 57% completions, 3.7% TD rate, 3.8% INT rate, 6.6 y/a?

Garoppolo gets zero credit for his teams being 33-14 with him and 8-29 without him since 2017?

I mean, sure knock him for being injury prone but at the very least the dude knows how not to lose football games.

Jimmy isn't Sanchez, but he's closer to Sanchez than Brady or Mahomes. In the four playoff games the Niners won with JG, he averaged 17 passing attempts per game (and winning by 11 ppg). The defense allowed 14 ppg and the team ran for 187 yards on average. In their two playoff losses, the defense allowed 25.5 ppg, Jimmy had 30+ passing attempts both games, and they averaged half as many rushing yards. Garoppolo has a 4-2 record as a starter in the post season with 4 TD in and 6 INT with a 74 rating. SF won their last NFCC game win on a blocked punt returned for a TD.

In their 6 playoff games, the SF offense has scored a total of 9 points (no TD) in the 4th quarter, getting outscored 57-9. That's not all on Jimmy, but it's not like he lit things up late in playoff games,

The two years they advanced in the playoffs, the first year they ranked #1 in rushing TD, #2 in rushing yards, and had one of the top defenses once they got guys back and healthy. The running game and defense weren't as good in 2021, but they were still near the top of the league in both aspects.

Not surprisingly, over the years when JG didn't play, the defense was nowhere near as good, they couldn't run the ball very well, and they had other injuries. The 2018 team forced 7 turnovers. The 2019 squad forced 34. There are any number of other reasons why the Niners were better WITH Garoppolo, but that doesn't mean they were better BECAUSE of Garoppolo, Sure, they were better when JG played over the flotsam and jetsam known as Nick Mullens, C.J. Beathard, or Brian Hoyer. Not exactly the best the game has to offer. So sure, if the rest of the team is healthy, they can run the football, and the defense is firing on all cylinders, SF can win games with Jimmy G by limiting mistakes. As for his yards per attempt numbers, it certainly didn't hurt having Deebo leading the league with 10 YARDS AFTER CATCH per reception to give Jimmy a full extra YPA.

How good is Garoppolo? Maybe league average. Maybe not. How often does a SB winning team win with guys like that? Not all that often. At least for now, JG hasn't shown that he can lead late game comebacks or have big games when the lights are brightest. Maybe he has that in him . . . but he hasn't displayed that as of yet.

If I had responded with stats from Brady or Mahones that would have been just as ludicrous as comparing him to Sanchez. Those are the extremes. Garoppolo isn't going to will a team to the Super Bowl like Mahomes can or Brady could. He's never making the HoF. Garoppolo needs to be on a good team and be as good a QB as Flacco, Dilfer, Hostettler, etc. That is absolutely within his skill set. He is already better than any of those guys ever were. He is exactly the kind of efficient QB who pushes the ball down field and plays smart, mostly mistake free football. That's a winning formula.

As HSG pointed out, very correctly, Garoppolo didn't lose the Super Bowl, he never should have been in a position to have to lead a game winning drive in the first place. That was 100% a team loss.

The bar for this guy has been set to ridiculous levels.

I dont believe for a second that they thought about taking Mac, regardless of draft position. IMO Kyle has wanted a hybrid QB like RGIII, Jamar, etc for years. Rodney Harrisons opinion doesn't hold any weight for me.

Well, everybody has said it I'm sure but let me, too - I wish him the absolute best. Sucks so dang bad. He will recover from this injury and should be fine. I don't know how much success Jimmy would have to have to undermine Lance's shot next year. I have to assume the organization is still going to go with Lance next year unless Jimmy just destroys it.

Not gonna lie, this is a huge hit in my SuperFlex dynasty leagues. I can hold him on IR but while his value was sky high a couple of days ago, there is no doubt it has now plummeted. I would be absolutely blown away if I get any offers that pique my interest. But I'm sure people will come fishing.

I dunno, there's been a lot of reporting that Shanahan wanted Jones and got talked into Lance by Lynch and a couple others. This was coming out before Mac Jones played a snap. Including by NFL people that claim they have high up sources in the building.

But you don't need those sources. Mac Jones is a Shanahan QB. All of Shanahan's QBs have been high-IQ, on-rhythm throwers in the Brady mold than the Jackson or Josh Allen mold.

We know he loves Kirk Cousins. He's had Hoyer, Garropolo, Matt Ryan - and look at his backups in SF, guys like Mullens and Beathard. With the exception of Matt Ryan these are all guys he picked. And they all fit the same mold.

Even if Lance did somehow come back in, say, 10 weeks, I don't see how they would throw him in at that point unless the team were hopelessly out of the playoffs - which seems highly unlikely. Or if Jimmy himself got hurt. Lance is assuredly going to have to wait until 2023 to get back on the field and see actual game action.

Completely agree with this. Someone said above why throw away a super bowl window ? Not necessarily the case if you have a good coach, D and offensive weapons. Eagles will feel they have a chance with Hurts this year, Ravens with Lamar ever since they started him, why not Lance if the 9ers believe in him ? This team is built to win now...they did not trade for CMac for the future...IMO if they win it this year it is easier because you can let Jimmy walk (he is gone no matter what IMO), go with Lance and all is good...if they don't win it things get dicey because while Lance needs to play the Niners are in absolute win now mode...will be real interesting to watch this unfold and I am 100% serious that if the Niners don't win it this year than the TB12 rumors will be front and center...it is a perfect match for many reasons on both sides and it may be the one way you can justify having Lance sit another year without killing the kids psyche...other than that they go with Lance and bring in a quality vet that they can win with if Lance gets overwhelmed.
