Queen Elizabeth passes away. (1 Viewer)

What are her career highlights/achievements? Was she an altruistic person who made the world a better place? I guess I could research it, but figured I'd ask in here.
i mean she is queen but she supports like 500 charities or something like that and did a lot to support racial equality in the english commonwhealth including dancing with the black president of ghana in the 60s talk about turning some heads back then she also worked pretty hard to condemn apartheid in south africa i would also put her laying a wreath to those who died fighting for irish independence against england and bowing respectfully as the absolutely right thing to have done but thats just me talking take that to the bank brohan

They start changing the money immediately, interesting.

2.5 billion people watched Diana's funeral. That should easily be topped.

I hadn't realized that Queen Elizabeth received incoming British prime minister Liz Truss in person just two days ago at Balmoral (photo). Whatever happened happened quickly.

I know that she is/was one of the worlds biggest supporters to charities.

A little trivia about her that I think is cool is her joining the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) in the British Army when she was a teenager. She wanted to enlist in the military during WWll, but she wasn't allowed because she was next in line to the throne. She pushed to be able to do it, and found a way by joining the ATS. She was trained as an auto mechanic and military truck driver. Being a mechanic sparked her love for cars, and she has a spectacular collection of classic cars. Anyway, I think she is still the only female in the royal family to ever serve in the military. RIP QE 👑

She was already sick and stayed home under the advice of doctors. The new PM made the trip in a non-traditional way is my understanding.

RIP Queen Elizabeth II, I honestly do think she was quite extraordinary and amazing.

Long live the new court jester - sorry but this guy isn't fit to hold the Queen's hat.

Now I’m confused. I always thought the title of Prince of Wales was the heir apparent (as it’s been for pretty much all of our lifetimes). The heir is now William, who up until today had been the Duke of Cambridge. Apparently he’s “assumed” the title of Duke of Cornwall - a title his father had.

speaking of big shoes to fill…

the worldwide coverage of this is pretty amazing on IPTV. Her funeral may be the most watched event ever. Her coronation was the first one shown on tv also.

He does have some gigantic shoes to fill, I don't envy him a bit.

Where to begin?

In all seriousness, Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her other realms and territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith’s biggest accomplishments were likely the modernizing (although maybe not enough for todays world) of the Monarchy itself, and quite simply keeping the British “empire” intact following the war, if only as a Commonwealth.

The Monarchy itself nearly didn’t survive her uncle abdicating the throne less than a year into his reign, followed by her own father being unprepared for the title - and by the time he was ready and able to do so, dying at a fairly young age passing the title to her at only 25.

The “Empire” nearly collapsed entirely following the war, and it’s nowhere close to what it was when she started (when about a quarter of the landmass of the world was part of it). Now, the Commonwealth has 54 member states - all voluntary sovereign nations. Allowing and overseeing each one of these totally peaceful transitions weakened her own title to a point where her title is really only ceremonial. Compare that to the fall/decline/abrupt end of other empires in history.

Thanks for posting this. Concise, succinct and to the point. Much appreciated.

I dont know. She seemed pretty tiny.

My understanding is that Prince of Wales is a title that is given by the reigning monarch. So William won't have the title until Charles gives it to him, which he will do at some point.

Charles is now King. Long live the King.

Any betting on what name he’ll take? It won’t be Charles.

King Charlie?

King Chuck?
I'm partial to Chuck, Man of the People. He could wear bowling shirts and drink stout with the peasants. Would be an excellent way to wind down the monarchy. Maybe buy everyone pizza or something.

English royalty need to go away.

We should not care.

She is famous because of who she was born too, not for any accomplishment.

I just assumed most here in the States don’t care. If the English want to have some royal family I don’t give a crap. I too find it weird but there’s a lot more weird other places do. I would suggest it be total figurehead and not quasi.
I think the whole monarchy thing is silly but she seemed like a fine and caring person. Only the inner circle really knows. I will not be watching the funeral.

So is he the king immediately? Or is it some long process?

"The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Charles, was to carry Excalibur. THAT is why I am your king."

And, no, I didn't vote for him.

1. It's a sad thing when anybody dies and she always seemed likeable/favorable to me.
2. The above said, I 100% agree with your post. What a goofy tradition that just must cost the "ordinary" British citizens lots of money.

They start changing the money immediately, interesting.

With the amount the Bank of England have printed of late, it should all be replaced by Tuesday afternoon.

RIP. Was obvious 4-5 hours before it was announced given the TV here clearing schedules and presenters switching to black suit/tie. Weird to think that I'm in my forties and my folks were 5 and not born when she came to the throne.

Has been an amusing side game over here of finding the most ridiculous Twitter account to have made a tribute tweet because they feel they need to. At the moment it's a two horse race between Crazy Frog and the British Kebab Awards

They generate far more in tourism £££ than they cost in taxpayer's money
