Quick Travel Advice - Bereavement (1 Viewer)

I haven't traveled much in years. Due to a family tragedy, I really want to get cross country on short notice. Prices are steep on such short notice. Anyone have recommendation or tips? Airlines, Sites, etc.

He didn't specify, maybe it is immediate.

My sister flew from Tennessee to ohio for free when our grandfather passed away.

First, sorry for your loss.

Second, calling the airlines can help, but also do your diligence on Kayak.com (or Priceline, etc). I don't remember where I read this, but a lot of airlines don't always give the best discounts for bereavement. Depending on how quickly you need to get there, consider a short layover. Or look for a one way flight there, and then look for the flight back separately, sometimes that will give you a better rate on the flight back than you could get on a round trip.

Tell the airlines its for a funeral. Many of them will give you a much better price.
Saw some airlines would give you 10% but you need to give a lot of information (which i guess doesn't surprise me). I don't want to call and ask for those details so I can get a price break. Just seems wrong.

Plus, something siad the "discount" airlines don't give price breaks.

Some of the airlines have a calendar you can fiddle with - you can see the price difference for each departure and return day. That helps a lot - you might be searching for a Tuesday through Friday trip, not realizing that if you stay over until Sunday, you save $400 in airfare. Saturday night stays are maybe the biggest factor for getting a lower price.

I'd check Southwest and Expedia.com.

Be wary of some of the lesser-known airlines, as they are often very fee-driven. I think there's one called Spirit where they charge for each carry-on luggage piece... the fees really add up quickly, but that's not considered by software that looks for the lowest fares.
