Quickest Release for a QB (1 Viewer)

historically speaking, marino probably had the quickest release i've seen...

he also had advantage of backing straight up, so he could see rush...

also the pocket sense & feet to shuffle away from rush...

among current QBs...

i suppose manning & brady have quick releases, with perhaps bulger being even quicker...

for up 'n coming QBs, romo & cutler impress me a lot...

i've also been increasingly impressed by a few other things about romo... his ability to throw from a variety of angles to get ball off without being touched (by DL on way out or DB on way in)...

also his timing on when to hit WRs as they break free of DBs or in splitting high & low coverage areas of zones...

who ya got?

I actually think Jeff George had the quickest release I have ever seen. He was no where near the QB that Marino was, but his release was quicker.

I ws 9 years old when Miami drafted Marino, grew up in South Florida, watched all of his games. The reason Marino had such a quick release was where he could throw the ball from...the ball was already cocked and sitting on top of his shoulder most of the time so he just unloaded that thing and away it went...he wasn't winding up to zing it.

But Marino had the quickest release I have ever seen...he simply could get the ball out faster than anyone. I would say Manning has some of that in his arsenal but nowhere close to Danny Boy.

The "mental midget" out of fear.

Namath and Marino. As far as currently, I'm not sure. Peyton's is pretty quick.

Actively in the game today i'd go with:

V. Young(he hardly even uses his arm, just kinda flips it out with his wrist)

B. Croyle (very, very quick trigger)

M. Bulger (i think he is unquestionably the quickest in the game now.)

For those who are saying P. Manning, I just dont see where you get that from. he gets rid of the ball on time but he puts his whole body into his throws. He makes it look like work everytime he throws.

ETA: All time is of course Dan the Man. Kinda funny though since he had small hands you would think he would have to pat the ball to make sure he had a good grip, right???

And closed the time between QBs hand and receiver's hand as good as anyone.Elway and Marino are generally acknowledged as throwing the fastest ball. I think Favre in his prime threw a damn fast ball and Manning's release is as good as it gets in today's game.

This is gonna sound silly, but watch his release when he has to dump the ball. Then watch him two plays later when he throws a dart - Manning;s got an extremely fast release - though you are right that he often has a long back kick at the end of the throw that marino didn't have. Marino's darts were thrown mostly flat footed.

Marino and George as far as releases that I've seen.

In today's game, Bulger has the quickest and I think out of the young players it's Romo.

The thing about Bulger and Romo though that have that funny side fling, I think that helps the quick release of the ball. Peyton Manning has a more traditional release. Peyton Manning doesn't get sacked hardly so it's certainly not slow.

Not claiming he had the quickest, but Dan Fouts deserves mention.

Marino is the obvious choice, but as Levin pointed out, his lack of body motion post-throw made his release appear a bit quicker than it was. Nonetheless, it was still out of this world.

Elway had an extremely quick release on the move. In the pocket, he had ball-pat-itis, as do many.

Romo is a bit of wildcard. As far as a straight time measure, I don't think it's THAT quick, although it's certainly above average. But it's his ability to accurately let it fly from different angles that is so impressive.

A guy that's a bit under the radar who's underrated in many aspects of quarterbacking, including this one, is Dave Krieg. He certainly wasn't flashy, but he got the ball out very quickly and accurately.

I'd pick Marino as the quickest, but probably not by as wide a margin as most guys my age.

Bulger's actual physical windup isn't really that quick, comparatively, but his decision-making is lightning. He sees an opening and it's almost as if he doesn't even process the thought, his arm just moves instinctively.

I would have said Marino but, after thinking about it, I've not done any research and therefore I'm in no position to make the call. Might be Dan. Might be Joe Montana. Most likely it's somebody who played before both of them. Perhaps Johnny U.

I guess you never saw Joe Montana. As for today, Croyle is pretty quick. Since you don't consider him to be good(nor do I) perhaps his quick release doesn't count.

How can you tell if someone has a quick release? I have watched games every Sunday for the past 11 years and never once has the thought of "quick releases" come to my mind. Maybe I am looking at this too simply, but I feel when the guy wants to get rid of the ball, he chucks it. Or are you excluding guys who pump-fake a lot, scramble, etc. I am not trying to be a wise-####, I seriously am surprised this is soemthing so many people have been tracking/aware of.
