DOLPHINS CONSIDERING QUINCY?

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 31, 2008, 8:56 a.m.

If Michael Irvin knows what he’s talking about, the Dolphins are even more desperate for a quarterback than anyone realized.

Irvin, the Hall of Fame wide receiver, reported on his radio show that former Cowboys and Jets quarterback Quincy Carter will be in Davie, Florida, this week for a workout with the Dolphins.

Dolphins front office boss Bill Parcells has experience working with Carter, although not necessarily positive experience: Parcells was the Cowboys’ coach when Dallas dumped Carter following a failed drug test. After that Carter caught on briefly with the Jets and then struggled through stints with the Canadian Football League and af2, which is the minor league of Arena Football.

But Carter doesn’t see his drug problems as an impediment to getting back into the NFL — and he even mentioned a player who could be a future teammate in explaining why he thinks he deserves another chance.

“I see Ricky Williams playing again,” Carter told the Palm Beach Post before he checked into a rehab facility in December. “I only failed one test. Ricky failed about five or six.”

Of course, the difference between Williams and Carter is that Williams is a much better football player than Carter. Players with Williams’ talent get multiple chances. It would be extremely surprising if Parcells gives Carter another chance.

I heard this on the "Morning Drive" this morning on Sirius. They were mentioning that Chris Simms has to sit in purgatory while a guy like Carter gets a looksie...the real news here is that they apparently are not happy with Beck, so it just may be McCown as the starter in '08...not really much news unless you play in start 3 QB leagues...lol.

The arena football league has a minor league? You learn something new everyday. Carter had his moments but made too many mistakes. I actually think McCown is fine until they find their new franchise qb.

they found their franchise qb....that would be Chad Henne...
I see Henne as a wasted draft pick. IMO he could develop into an above average game manager, but will never reach franchise quarterback status.

The camp blog I've been reading makes it sound like Beck is bad, captain check down. McCown is bad, but better than Beck. Henne is doing well for a rookie. My guess is McCown this year, Henne next.

Dude, they had better make sure that whatever hotel these guys stay at has their snack machines fully stocked for those late night munchy attacks. LOL if Carter and Ricky share a room. Stoners paradise!

Statistically, Quincy wasn't the joke QB everyone makes him out to be. 3300 yards, almost 58%, little worse than 1:1 TD to INT ratio.

The Cowboys+Bill Parcells made the playoffs with him. Some throws though were just awful and the decision making even worse.

Guys like him and Cade McKcown(sp?) on Chicago looked like they might have been OK but the dunderhead mistakes were just too much. 3300 passing, 250 rushing, and the playoffs your first year starting (at a fairly young age), that's not too shabby. No team will ever feel like they can win a big game though with a mistake prone QB though.

You could probably throw young Kordell into that group too.

Anyhow, it's been too long. I can't imagine it's worth the trouble. BP should call his buddy in Carolina or New England.

why?

The Dolphins will have the Tebow pick (#1 overall) next year.
Just out of curiousity, how does he project as an NFL QB. I always thought he was gimmicky, but maybe I am just remembering his freshman year?
He's a big strong kid, but doesn't have the speed like other running QBs. Thats not a good matchup with the size and speed of NFL DEs and LBs. Last year when he was a bit gimpy, he couldn't get it done with his arm and UF lost games.
