Quintin Mikell (1 Viewer)

A recent Yahoo Sports Article lists Mikell as the FS, is this accurate? I know he was moving around in pre-season, if true how much does this affect his tackle value?
A quote from Craig Dahl, starting Rams free safety, on how the Rams use their safeties:
We blitz off of both sides, we play two deep on both sides, we roll the free safety down [toward the line] just about as much as, if not more than, the strong safety. It leads to a very interchangeable safety position on our defense.

not that preseason is the endall in judging how players will play in real/live action.........Mikell looked alot more active and a playmaker than Dahl this preseason. not to knock Dahl who is pretty good in his own right, but Mikell just looked better and better as a fantasy play. Both guys seem to fit well into Spags system. i'd consider Mikell still a lower end DB1 and Dahl maybe a high end DB3 as both will be making up for subpar LB/CB playmaking

I watched some of the Rams preseason, and Mikel routinely was on the tight end and routinely was closer to the line then Dahl.

And as ninerfan mentioned above, he looked far more active then the other safety as well. He was locked into my top 10 safeties, sitting around 6 or so.

Spagnoulo (and his predecessor Jim Johnson, too) has always been an interchangeable safety kind of schemer. From Brian Dawkins to Quintin Mikell to Gibril Wilson, there have been players with a "FS" designation that get put into positions to make plays, particularly in subpackages. Offenses no longer routinely put their TE (or the 2 WR side) to the quarterback's right, so the right safety (in the interchangeable scheme) gets plenty of strong side duty. If that player has the talent, he'll be used as a rover, a hybrid nickel backer, a force player in the box and other roles that put him around the ball.

Mikell may not be a 90 solo player in this role, but the guys who have played this role before (including Mikell himself) have been very productive statistically.

In the end, as we're seeing more and more often, the depth chart position should be a starting point for your research and expectation but it's frequently dangerous to fall back on the time-honored defaults when matching the depth chart position and potential IDP value.
