Racism / Sexism and Craft Beer (1 Viewer)

I wasn’t aware of the specifics with regard to craft beer, but there is a history of racism and sexism in nearly every industry in this country, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

Seems a bit of a nothing story - in the same vein as "Dog bites Man"

I would have been more shocked if the craft beer industry reported that it did not have rampant sexism/racism.

I think it's a significant story. Founder of Tired Hands is stepping away. And the Farmstead owner as well.

I'm not sure what there is for us to do about it beyond try to do the right thing ourselves. But it seems non trivial.

I'm not saying there isn't racism and sexism but authors that use anonymous social media accounts as their source of information are immediately dismissed by me.

My totally off the cuff answer (and without reading the article yet) is - white males are the predominant people who home brew and start craft beer companies.  In any subset of white males you will find some that are racist and some that are misogynistic- some both.  Any notion that craft beer is a haven for these people versus and other predominantly white male hobby is absurd on its face.

This is the correct answer by the way.

Seems pretty spot on....

I’ve got a lot of friends in the business and have been following closely the last few days. It’s amazing how it has snowballed off of a simple Instagram question. When one person names someone, 5 more people tell their story about the same person. As mentioned already there are some very prominent people who are getting named. Modern Times is probably the worst because they always sold themselves as diverse and inclusive but they’re just like all the rest.

Trying to take this seriously because the article reads like a Onion/Babylon Bee piece.  Never heard of, would like to know what the source police think of Paste Magazine.

Figure it out for myself - go to the source, read the complaints/claims.  Sure there are some bad claims made by women in there.  There are also a lot of stuff like "someone said to me, "I'd like to talk to the brew master as I have some questions for him."  I'm trying to figure out if the woman was mad because she automatically thought they were dismissing her as a possibility or if she was upset because they used the wrong pronoun.  Of course there is no follow up to it and in either case it takes a pretty big assumption to the commenter's intention by the woman to interpret it the way she did.

Verdict - mostly over hypersensitivity magnified by social media justice warrioring.  Hold any real bigots accountable while not letting the woke mob cancel craft beer over it.

I bet there's a lot of racism and misogyny in the ham radio community too.

Women dominated beer brewing for centuries, until men took over by accusing them of being witches (some historians dispute this, but the article lays out the case for it).    Link at the end of the article to a current Stanford study about sexism in the craft beer industry.

As an aside, about 30 years ago I worked at the first microbrewery in San Diego.   The brewmistress(?) trained in Munich and was the first woman in the US to get a masters degree in brewing science.  She made the best red ale I've ever had.

Boulevard brewing in KC had some major harassment issues that became public a while back. There was a big investigation and a few people lost their jobs. Didn't realize this was happening at other breweries across the country as well.

I would not even say hobby.  Seems there is a long list of industry that has had such issues.  The "good ol boys" club as it was known.  Maybe craft beer is just the most recent example or the brewing industry slower to adapt to times than others.

I'm not aware of craft beer racism but with all the new all African American series I sure see racism in media :(
Are you talking about the Black Is Beautiful series? The series made by hundreds of breweries with profits donated to African American charities. I’d love to know about the media racism having to do with that.

I’m a mug club member at three breweries.  Breweries have been far more inclusive to all people - whether as a customer or as a worker.  To people in the craft industry, the product is an art form.

The problems a lot of time come up in more corporate settings involving people more disconnected from the ‘crafts’. Most stories coming out are about management and owners and not a whole lot about head brewers. But everyone in the industry I’ve talked to is not surprised at all by the stories.

Yep!  At this point my attitude is that people are way hypersensitive (thanks MSM) AND have found a way to possibly make an easy buck.  Are there some incidents that are valid?  I'm sure there are but they are drowned out by all the people who are so ready to be outraged that any slight - no matter how minor - is "A REALLY BIG DEAL".

We've been so saturated with hypersensitive BS that we have no idea of what's real and what's made up crap anymore.  Also, never heard of "Paste".  Seems like one of the fly by night websites that pop up as soon as their previous site is taken down.

Also, as noted above, racism/sexism/misonogy are most likely in EVERY industry.  And it's not just "white males" either.  Remember Hollywood?  That great bastion of wokeness and outspoken celebrities?  Yeah, turns out they were also racists/misongynist/sexist bastards too.

I absolutely refute any notion that it's just white males who are all these bad things.  They're just the current punching bags right now but because they are there is a good amount of non-white males getting away with this stuff.

Are you talking about the Instagram linked in the article?  Because at least half of the complaints seemed to come from customers with a bad and maybe somewhat offensive sense of humor.

The Instagram is @ratmagnet. All the stories are in stories and the archived stories (not sure what they call them). I don’t know that any of them are customer complaints, so I think you are looking in the wrong place. It’s employees or former employees talking about abuse ranging from verbal, sexual and physical abuse. There are several stories of actual or attempted rape. There are also stories of pay/promotion inequality but most of the focus is on abuse by superiors.

I understand how it works. It's clear that a lot of them were customers. The one I quoted earlier for example.

Sounds like any other corporate setting now that big money has invaded some of these places.   It's easy for the magazine to be woke and just blame race though.

Also, stop asking #craftbeer women you know if harassment has happened to them. Of course it has. Instead, ask your male craft beer friends if they've ever stopped someone harassing someone. That's a conversation worth having.
Yeah...I think next time I'm at a craft brewery I'll just start asking random dudes working there if they've stopped harassing someone and see how that works out for me.

never heard of it but if they're only focused on skin color to me, that seems pretty racist

the core point of helping areas/people/communities etc is great ........... discriminating based on color not so much IMO

how can I say that? because if it were White is Beautiful .... what would it be labeled ?

I am not a craft beer guy.  From what I have read about craft beer it has been pretty much all men starting out small, some in their garage and basements and growing the product.  Have there been many women or black brewers that have started out making small batches of their own brew and growing the product into a product stores picked up?

Red Trolley?
