Tonight is one of the first times I've gotten to see the Jaguars play this year. Isn't mathis supposed to be a great corner? Not only did it appear that he can't cover, but he really can't tackle. He missed many key tackles tonight leading to first downs.

And it's not like he was missing tackles on Randy Moss. Jabar Gaffney made him look silly a couple of times.

Was it just an off night or does he always play like this?

I'm guessing here ( not a jags fan ) but Mathis' strength is in covering 1-1. There are a bunch of cover corners in the NFL that don't tackle well. I think Mathis is most valuable in single (and likely deep ) coverage. The Pats played an all underneath game and made the DBs of JAX tackle

He played a pretty good game in my eyes (outside of the missed tackle on Stallworth. How many receptions did Moss have again?
FWIW, in the postgame press conference, Moss said after his first reception, he was blanketed by two or three defenders the rest of the game. He also tossed out there that Mike Tice probably had an influence on how they defended him.

Brian Williams was on Moss MUCH more than Mathis. Williams also had safety help over the top from Reggie Nelson on almost every play. That left Mathis free to play either Stallworth or Gaffney 1on1. Other than the one big play to Stallworth, I thought he did OK in coverage. The plan was to take away the deep stuff, which they did, and force Brady to throw underneath. They executed the plan but the back seven, including Mathis, had way too many missed tackles.

Most of the responses here are pretty accurate. I would add that as a Pats homer I would trade Asante Samuel for Mathis straightup, although part of that is based on the belief that we could keep Mathis for a little less than the Nate Clemens money Asante wanted this year and will get from another team next year.

Mathis is still one of the 5 best CBs in the NFL, regardless of how he played last night. I think he played pretty well. People need to realize that the reason Jack had what appeared to be the worst tackling of the season was because with them paying so much attention to stopping the big play to Moss there was a lot more space for the guys underneath making catches and running the ball. It's simply harder to make tackles in space. Especially against a group as talented as NE. This is what makes NE one of the best offenses of all time. They make you choose how they kill you. Fast and clean (Brady to Moss/Stallworth) or slow and painfull (Maroney/Faulk/Welker/TEs).
