Ran a 10k in June (4 Viewers)

I did a 5 mile tempo run today. It was over 100 and high winds. This may be one of my most miserable runs ever. I will say I feel good that I did it. My wife thinks I am stupid.
All our wives think we are stupid, it has become a thread tradition like none other. On my end, did a 16 mile ride at lunch only to find out it was national running day, SO, I had to do a 5K run after work.

Did some quarter mile intervals on the TM tonight while watching the hockey game.

8 quarters...a mile before and a mile after with a little over a mile of jogging in between the quarters. Had to stop twice with a nose bleed.

Felt great...have not done those in about a month or so.

That's what we're talkin' about! A true FBG.

Would have looked better had I been running outside.Come home with a streak of blood out of my nose and freak my wife out.

Wife signed us up for the half Marathon in Disney World in January. I have to hand it to her. She never had an athletic bone in her body and after the 2nd kid she wanted to lose weight. She lost 75 lbs and looks incredible. The loss of weight has shrunked her cup size quite a bit. She was a bit depressed about that for 2 months before she decided that after the race if she finishes she will get a boob job as a reward.

WIN/WIN :pickle:

Congrats X 2 :)My wife is definitely not the athletic types. She eats well and keeps the weight down that way...walks a bit. There is no chance she gets into running at all.

You know by telling us this you're on the hook for post-op pics, right?

:thumbup:Quick piece of advice, run the 1/2 with her versus running it for time. My wife and I did the 1/2, both on our own pace and were bummed a bit at the end because we didn't run together. They have amazing photo ops where you can get photos with your own camera (not just the ones you can purchase). Other quick piece of advice, there are tons porta johns by the start, do wait in the huge lines by the Epcot lot.

Shall I wait for the swelling and bruising to go down first? :D I'll ask her. Can't hurt, right?

That was the debate, but we are in the Disney Vacation Club, so this will be a yearly thing. I figured this one to be about time and next year we may do the full marathon along with her. We have the Boardwalk Resort booked for January which is walking distance from Epcot, so I'm good there.

You may be the one with swelling/bruising, but heck yeah... Go for it!

12-8-8 the last three days. Tonight is hill repeat night. I'll run about 2.5 miles to the hill, do 5 repeats, and then run home. Should end up being about 9 miles total. Hoping not to puke.

ATC1 - I don't know a single girl who's gotten a boob job and doesn't like showing 'em off. No excuses for not getting us the pics.

;)

Is there a website that lists all the running events within a certain distance of your residence? Looking to get a 10K time before the half marathon for better placement.

I use Cool Running. I think it works better in some areas of the country than others. I find most of my New England races on there.
Louisiana is full of fat lazy people.
How soon are you looking/needing to do it?

Fixed. Gruecd's, uh, portfolio is impressive.
 Based on what I have seen on FB, it appears he is going though some type of Cougar Phase lately............

Hi All! Wanted you to know that I'm still alive. My groin is not healed yet, but I did have a GREAT PT appointment this morning. She used cold laser therapy on it, and I was immediately stronger and have less pain. I'm going twice a week for the rest of the month, and will be focusing on strength building starting next week. She wants me to start swimming next week, followed soon after by spinning. She estimates two weeks before I should start running. First person to give me even a glimmer of hope since January :fingerscrossed:

Between now and October? I run 6 miles on Sunday, 3-4 miles 2xduring the week. Ride my bike on days I don't run.

 Usually guys in this thread will be the patients needed to be held back and not pushed. Know you limit and don't push it beyond what the PT suggests even with strengthening and the swimming. Muscles strains can be a pain and last longer if you try to push through it, especially in the groin.

Taking one for the team. I'm trying to get some more age-appropriate eye candy for you and tri-man. ;)

Look out dirty tri-socks.

Getting ready to go out for an easy 3. Only 88 out right now so it should be a pleasant run.

For Chasers, please check out the van thread on FB. There is a question pending.

Thanks ATC1! I've been struggling with this since January = I'm soooooo done with it. Can not wait to get a good bike or ride in.

Seriously. I had no idea how hard this would be. It's turning into an obsession. :hot:
Running races in Louisiana in June? Who wants to sign up for a race that will be 90 degrees and 90% humidity?
:hey: I could do a 5k now.Did the three miles in 30:47 and it was easy. At the two mile mark I was singing along with my Ipod. The only injuries were to the poor people living along my route who had to suffer my voice. So does anyone know a good post run carb drink that has few calories?

No idea on the carbs...Im actually looking for a better protein bar that is low in carbs (more importantly sugars).Bar + low carbs I don't really think exist.

The reason I asked.
Approximately 50% more glycogen can be stored if carbohydrates are consumed immediately following strenuous exercise.
Glycogen is the source of energy most often used for exercise.

Chocolate Milk. I also like Vanilla Soy Milk with chocolate syrup.

I do dig a good chocolate milk.

But usually my post run drink (after a glass of diet green tea) is a fruit smoothie with a scoop of whey protein.

I just read that elsewhere. While I am not a big fan of soy milk, we do buy Vanilla Almond Milk, and I like it a lot.

When you're storing glycogen, you're storing calories. You don't get the glycogen without the calories by way of carbs. Since all the calories in sports drinks come from carbs (excepting muscle milk or protein shakes), I don't see how it would make any difference. And because glycogen is stored in adipose tissue, I don't think it's a great strategy if anyone still has weight to lose. It will certainly cause you to retain water as each glycogen molecule will bond to three water molecules (which is why low carb dieters lose so much weight in the first ten days, it's water weight). It is absolutely true that when most runners "bonk", it is because their body has run out of stored glycogen. But your body can also create glycogen from protein through glyconogenesis. People who are low carb adapted do this more efficiently. In my own experience, I've found that if I warm up slowly, I actually have more steady state endurance. Now, I'm not running at competitive speeds, and I imagine most who are need to get their fueling right. But it isn't something I would personally worry about until I was running more than recreationally.

:goodposting: I am not really worried about it this time. The marathon training begins at the end of July and hopefully I will be down in weight by then. While I am not planning on breaking any speed records in the marathon, I don't think it can hurt to be nutritionally sound during training. As soon as I posted the original question I realized that eating carbs means higher calories. My brain was still out on the run when I posted it.

More important than the calories is the form of sugar available. This isn't the weight loss thread, so I won't belabor the metabolic evils of fructose here, but most recovery drinks are dextrose or maltodextrin anyway because they are absorbed faster. In the "recovery" context, you actually want an insulin spike, because insulin prompts the pathways to open to allow your muscles to absorb nutrients (which is why you might want some protein, creatine, amino acids at the same time). As far as I know Gatorade, Powerade, etc all use these types of sugars.

Did some "cross-training" yesterday.

Chasing my son around in the pool and having 3 kids gang up on me with the water guns. My eyes got a good workout too with the few fine creatures catching some sun.

500 pages!

:confetti:

Nothing to report here - but I have a 10-mile "race" in two weeks, so I am finally going to start running again this weekend. Really.

My 10 K program had me run 2.5 miles today before 5.5 miles on Sunday. Ran my best at 2.5 miles at 23:19. With the short runs throughout the week while training, am I supposed to run a faster pace within the 2.5 miles or run at a pace I would like to run for my 10K?

Got up early in this morning and did 10 miles before it got too hot, though it was still super-humid. This was my first double-digit run since my marathon, and it felt really good. I kept checking my garmin and finding that I was going 30-45 seconds faster than what I planned on, but everything felt fine and it's been almost two full weeks now of nothing but slow recovery miles, so I just went with. Hoping to get things back to normal next week.

"In" before gruecd pulls the trick of deleting old posts so he can slide up to the top of page 500. Yeah, buddy, we're watching you.ATC - run the shorter runs faster than 10K pace, I'd say.

Alright marathon gurus, I need some advice. Y'all know how my first marathon went. How do I translate this into training for my 2nd one and setting a realistic goal? 4:42 is a 10:46 average. I'm sure I have more than that in me, but what do I realistically shoot for in November's marathon? I feel like I set myself up to fail with shooting for the 4:00 target which obviously required near perfect conditions. Do I cut the difference in half and shoot for a 4:21 or do I remain bull-headed and try for the 4:00 again?

I obviously want to improve, but I want to keep it realistic too. The competitive part of me wants to gun for 4:00 again, but that honestly has me pretty concerned after last month's showing. I think I'm going to stick with just 2 'major' races for the remainder of 2010. I'll be doing a bunch of 5K/10K races throughout the summer, but don't consider them to be to major since they won't require much, if any, recovery planning.

Hershey Park Half Marathon - 10/16/11

Philadelphia Marathon - 11/20/11
