Same here. I find that communicating with the massage girl helps to focus on the areas that need the most work. For me, it's typically my calves and my hip flexors.Chit-chat. Look at me - I'm going to be chasing around high school girls every day for the next two weeks!!(Seriously I'd maybe drop a run, but try to keep a couple in there every week).andyjayhawker said:"Cross-training" question. I'm 25 and in pretty good shape, run 8-miles at 8 minute pace about 3 times a week with soccer and basketball mixed in between. My question is that for the next two weeks I'm going to be refereeing a varsity-level high school soccer game pretty much everyday. Basically it's a 90 minute game that entails a lot of light jogging, a lot of standing, and occasional but not infrequent 80% 50-yard sprints (less difficult for a girls game). I want to maintain my current fitness level, but I'm not really sure how much I should be doing in addition to the refereeing since I don't want to overwork myself, and keeping in mind that I will be playing my own 90-minute soccer games most Saturdays. Any thoughts from serious runners?
I'd treat it as a good opportunity to give yourself a break from the regular routines. Back off a run or two ...or maybe just do one longer, slow run for variety.andyjayhawker said:"Cross-training" question. Tough crowd!Seriously, the infection came along with fever and body aches. Doctor told me on Friday it would be gone by Saturday night. As of Monday morning, no change. It's only on the left side (right is perfect) but is just a big red, swollen, ##### mess. Started a different antibiotic yesterday and still have seen very little change. Likely headed to an ENT tomorrow.Praying this does not require a tonsillectomy.
, but I am getting there.35 lbs! That is great. In terms of your mileage, it seems you've already handled doubling your mileage from last month to this without getting hurt. This month only calls for a 50 % increase -- or in gross mileage, you added 25 last month and you're only adding 22 and and 25 in the next two months.I think it's reasonable, though I would caution you to be careful about doing too much speed work as you're adding mileage. That's what got me hurt. Hal Higdon said you can train to increase your speed or to increase your mileage, but that beginning runners get hurt when they try to increase both at the same time.Great job!Seeing the monthly totals prompted me to add up mine to see the progression. I've noted before in this thread, but I'm recently back into the swing of things after quite a few yrs off with building a house and baby makin'. 4years and 45lbs later, I got back into it with P90x in Feb and then Insanity in May. I did next to no running until April and just used it as a change of pace. I didn't really start getting into it until partway through July when I got sick of Insanity and was challenged to do this half marathon. (I'm down 35lbs since starting back in Feb)Feb - 0Mar - 0Apr - 11.2May - 11.4Jun - 7.9Jul - 24.7Aug - 50.0 (includes 3 on the schedule tonight)Looking at the schedule, here's what is forecasted up to the HM:Sep - 72Oct - 97Nov - 77 (includes HM 11/21)So, I'm a littleright now....Am I pushing too much too soon?
Very very few are. Great job on the run!I am not "Tri_Man" old, but I am getting there.

actually had a good day, though I was out early this morning. After a careful warm-up, I did a very steady 2 miles on the track at exactly 14:00. Dang, it felt good to open it up! My training numbers over the past several weeks have been abysmal, if focusing on the primary disciplines. But I've done a lot of strength work (upper and lower body) plus yoga, which can serve me equally well.I think this guy has serious denial problems. Both Lafayette and West Lafayette have said it is not going to happen. If you go to the run web page the course is no longer posted. That page now saysGreetings!

Yes, Boston's my primary focus after next weekend's relay race. And that's why I haven't freaked out too much over the recent down time. I'd like to add an October or November race, but my main focus through the fall will be getting/staying healthy and setting a great base before gearing up the miles through the winter (ugh to the weather and darkness). Boston ...and then the plan is the Big Sur marathon 13 days later, just to be stupid (and, then, to be done with marathoning). That's great, I am sure you will get back to it soon.. I'm going to disagree and say that this race will likely happen. If he's taking entries at this time with no plan in place for a race, that would be fruad. I could see that except for the fact that he has numerous other races that he puts on. Can't see risking them all over this.If you remember my posts about the half marathon that was cancelled in my home town, I got another email from the guy supposedly putting it on.

I did three miles today with the temp at 87 and humidity about 75%.
Started with a half mile warm up run at 11:19 pace. Then started quarter mile repeats.
.5-.75------- 8:20 m/m
1-1.25------ 8:01 m/m a lot of this uphill a small incline
1.5-1.75---- 8:16 m/m strangely mostly downhill
2-2.5------- 8:34 m/m I did a half mile here so I could finish up with a cool down half mile
Total for the run was 29:28 a 9:50 pace. plus I wasn't dying at the end. For the first time in a long while I feel like I am getting it back.
I know this is not great compared to most of you guys, but it is pretty good for a guy my age and size. I am not "Tri-man" old, but I am getting there.

For those that haven't discovered Groupon.com, you may want to sign up. I bet I see a massage one every other week. I took advantage of one and got an hour massage that would usually be $60, for $30. It was so good I tipped her $20.Sports massage ain't fun. There's no candles and spa music. It's basically a combination of someone digging into your muscles and stretching you out. I usually yelp in pain a number of times during it and have come close to tears on occasion. It hurts but it really helps me with flexibility and muscle recovery which are two ongoing problems in my running life.I pay $60 including tip for an hour-long massage, and I try to go monthly. But like Workhorse said, these are definitely not about candles and relaxing music.
I take the time before to let them know what I want them to work on the most (where I am sore) and what I like and what I don't (like that they can stay away from my face and other hooey stuff like that). Then, I do very little talking and have even fallen asleep during a few (which I was told by one of them that this was the ultimate compliment). If you want to talk, they will, but otherwise they will respect that you want to be quiet and relax.Well, d'oh - lunge steps down the hotel hallway and back, or squats in your room. Add in a some push-ups for the upper body. Sid - we wish you luck!(On my end - my 5th day in a row doing nothing. Damn business trip)
D-House - great run! I trust you slept like a rock.

Hope you get better soon! I just had a 5 day layoff that I finally broke today due to illness, as well - woke up feeling like someone had beaten the snot out of me. Took a few to knock it out. Yesterday was business travel and I finally got a run in today - lovely downtown Cleveland! Managed to do a couple laps around Progress Field (Indians were playing at the time - nice stadium) and across some bridge a couple times. Felt good and put in 5.75 at right around 8min./mile.NED - 35 lbs. is spectacular. I think you can push the mileage. I was told the toughest mileage increase was getting from 4-6 miles consistently. If you can break that barrier you should be fine. Even if you don't hit your 97 mile month you should be fine for your HM. I do agree about the speedwork, though. You don't need any, or much at all. The mileage you are putting on your legs is more than enough. I'd probably do a bit more tempo work and forget any speedwork entirely. Injury prevention is priority #1.Not trying to be insensitive here, but why can't you run with tonsilitis?Down with tonsillitis since Friday. On round 2 of antibiotics and cannot shake it. Dude...Mojo finding in three simple steps:1. Take a day off running2. Get Drunk3. Get laidClear your head for a day and get back into it. 1 is the first step and 2 and 3 can be done in any order.OK, I think I'm seriously mind-####ed after Saturday's crappy half marathon. Was supposed to do my 9 with 5 x 1000M yesterday morning, and that didn't happen because I was too lazy to get out of bed, plain and simple. Then last night I ended up having to go back to the office for a while after dinner, and by the time I got home at 8:00, I was exhausted, so I didn't run last night, either. On top of everything else, my allergies (which have been fine since getting shots several years ago) have mysteriously re-appeared, and they've been driving me nuts the last few days. So I get up this morning, it's 70 degrees with like 90%+ humidity, but I decide to go for it anyway. I run 3+ warm-up miles to the track, make it through two repeats, and I'm done. Legs aren't the problem; I just can't breathe in this crap. Run a couple miles back home and call it a day.So like I said in my Facebook update this morning, if anyone finds my mojo, please give it back.

Phys Ed: Does Stretching Before Running Prevent Injuries?
By GRETCHEN REYNOLDS
Should you stretch before a run? That question, which has prompted countless academic studies, debates and inter-running-partner squabbles, is now at the heart of a notable new study published in August on the Web site of USA Track and Field, the sport’s national governing body. The study, one of the largest of its kind, involved almost 1,400 runners, from age 13 to past 60, who were assigned randomly to two groups. The first group did not stretch before their runs, while otherwise maintaining their normal workout routine: the same mileage, warm-up (minus any stretching) and so on. The second group stretched, having received photographs and specific instructions for a series of simple, traditional poses, like leaning over and touching toes, that focused on the calf, hamstring and quadriceps muscles. The volunteers were told to hold each stretch for 20 seconds, a technique known as static stretching. The entire routine required three to five minutes and was to be completed immediately before a run.
The volunteers followed their assigned regimens for three months. Predictably, since running, as a sport, has a high injury rate, quite a few became injured during the three months. About 16 percent of the group that didn’t stretch were hobbled badly enough to miss training for at least a week (the researchers’ definition of a running injury), while about 16 percent of the group that did stretch were laid up for at least a week. The percentages, in other words, were virtually identical. Static stretching had proved to be a wash in terms of protecting against injury. It “neither prevented nor induced injury when compared with not stretching before running,” the study’s authors concluded, raising the obvious corollary, so why in the world do so many of us still stretch?
Stretching is, of course, a contentious issue in sports. The bulk of the available science strongly suggests that static stretching before a workout not only does not prevent overuse injuries but also may actually hinder athletic performance. “There is a very important neurological effect of stretching,” said Ross Tucker, a physiologist in South Africa and co-author of the Web site The Science of Sport. “There is a reflex that prevents the muscle from being stretched too much,” which is activated by static stretching, inducing the muscle to become, in effect, tighter in self-protection. Past studies have found that athletes’ vertical jump is lower after a bout of static stretching than with no stretching at all. They can’t generate as much power. Meanwhile, other studies have found, like the new track and field association report, that static stretching seems to have little benefit in terms of injury prevention, particularly against the overuse injuries common in running. “The findings of this present study are totally in line with the existing literature,” said Malachy McHugh, the director of research at the Nicholas Institute of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma and the lead author of a comprehensive new review of decades’ worth of stretching research published in April in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports.
But many people remain fiercely attached to their stretching routines. “It was really hard to recruit runners” who, used to stretching, would agree to be randomly assigned to the nonstretching group, said Alan Roth, a former board member of USA Track and Field and director of the study. Once they understood that they might be required to not stretch for three months, they declined to participate. It took the researchers more than two years to coax enough runners to join and complete the study, generating enough data for meaningful results.
And the results are “meaningful,” according to Dr. Dan Pereles, an orthopedic surgeon in the Washington area who originated and led the study. “I had gone into this thinking that stretching would prevent injuries. I was fairly sure of it. But that’s not what we found.” Instead, static stretching provided no particular benefit. On the other hand, it didn’t cause harm, either.
One anomalous finding of the USA Track and Field study was that runners who were used to stretching and were assigned to the nonstretching group became injured at a disproportionately high rate. Almost 30 percent of them wound up hurting themselves during the three months. But no experts associated with the study or who have read the results believe that this finding intimates that stretching had been keeping them uninjured in the past. More likely, Dr. McHugh said, they fell victim to a training error, which, he explained, “in reality can mean any abrupt change in training patterns. Your body adapts to its routine, and if that routine is monotonously habitual as with many runners, it doesn’t take much of a change to cause an injury.”
So is the primary takeaway of the USA Track and Field study that, whatever you’re doing now in terms of stretching or not stretching, don’t stop? Possibly, but most physiologists, taking a broader view of the available science, would probably say no. “In all our involvement with elite athletes now, we don’t do this kind of static stretching anymore,” Dr. Tucker said. Instead, the best science suggests that an ideal preworkout routine “consists of a very easy warm-up, followed by a gradual increase in intensity and then dynamic stretching,” he said. Dynamic stretching, or exercises that increase your joints’ range of motion via constant movement, does not seem to invoke the inhibitory reflex of static stretching, Dr. Tucker said. When “you stretch through movement, you involve the brain much more, teaching proprioception and control, as well as improving flexibility.”
In practice, dynamic stretching would mean that, instead of leaning over and touching your toes or pushing against a wall to stretch your hamstrings before running, you might raise your leg before you in a marching motion, and then swing it back, in a well-controlled arc, suggested Phil Wharton, a neuromuscular therapist and founder, with his father, Jim, of the Wharton Performance clinic in New York City. Or lift your leg to the side and scissor it in front of you to warm up the hip joint.
But make any such alterations to your routine gradually, with circumspection. If there’s one lesson from the USA Track and Field study, said Dr. Pereles, it is that “sudden changes are probably not a good idea.”
The primary reason I vowed to never run a fall marathon again was because of my asthma / allergies. Traditionally August became impossible for me to effectively train through because my meds stopped working well. Now I'm on a daily asthma med now (Advair) and luckily my allergies can be controlled with over-the-counter meds. You'll get through it.OK, I think I'm seriously mind-####ed after Saturday's crappy half marathon. Was supposed to do my 9 with 5 x 1000M yesterday morning, and that didn't happen because I was too lazy to get out of bed, plain and simple. HOME OF PURDUE HALF MARATHON COURSE ANNOUNCED Lafayette, IN (September 1, 2010).....A new course has been secured for the inaugural Home of Purdue Half Marathon (HomeOfPurdueHM.com) in the Greater Lafayette area for the October 24 event. The nearby town of Flora will host the event in conjunction with the Carroll County Community Center which will also be the event beneficiary. "We welcome the event to Flora and are excited about being a part of the nationwide USRA Half Marathon Series", says the Flora Town Council. "Runners and walkers will truly enjoy the roads and course that will showcase a unique part of Carroll County." Carroll County Community Center Director Don Franklin, a 32-year veteran administrator with the YMCA backed up those sentiments, "As a competitive runner myself, I thought the event would be great for the Greater Lafayette community when it was announced a year ago" I have known Dean for years since his days at Brooks Running Shoe Company and felt we should talk about the event". The Home of Purdue Half Marathon, 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run will start and finish at the Community Park in Flora adjacent to the Community Center. Several local runners will work with Franklin and Reinke Sports Group Midwest staff to develop a course that will showcase the area. The Lexington Half Marathon is the largest Series event in the 2- year history of the Tour with the recent Worcester (MA) Half Marathon the second largest at 1,523. "We are especially proud of this our first USRA Half Marathon Series event in my native Hoosier state", said event owner Reinke Sports Group President Dean Reinke, a former Indiana State Mile Champion and 4:02 miler and 2:24 Marathoner while at Indiana University, "with family in the Greater Lafayette area and Lake Freeman and Carroll County as one of our annual vacations, we couldn't be more proud with the support and enthusiasm of Don Franklin and the Town of Flora". I keep track of my approximate calories burned on my spreadsheet. I'm physically down about 5lbs overall for the year, and I've burned over 53lbs worth of calories.Ned- Great job on the workout and as stated by Sand, I think you will be able to ramp up the mileage. You can always take an extra rest day here or there if you feel yourself overly tired or sore. The weight loss is amazing. I have been able to keep of nearly 30 pounds over the last 3 years with running. I really want to get a lot leaner and drop from 10 - 15 more, but I just can't seem to get to do it, even with all the miles that I run. I like to eat too much crap.
I figured this would be the case. Too much money at stake in a bad economy for someone not to step up and host. Flora gives Lafayette the finger. With an entire series in place the organizer had to turn over every stone to pull this off or refund a lot of money.update on the half marathon in Indiana. It is now in Flora, Indiana. email from organizer.Greetings! JUST 2 MONTHS TO GO UNTIL THEHOME OF PURDUE HALF MARATHON!
