Ran a 10k in June (7 Viewers)

Here goes nothing...

- our favorite race (overall) -- Hmmm...probably Boston. After crashing and burning my way to a huge positive split at Boston 2008, it felt great to run a good, tactical race en route to running a 3:09 and BQing at Boston! Perhaps more importantly, I spent the whole weekend with a couple dozen of my closest running friends. At times, I almost forgot that I had a race to run!

- our favorite moment within a race -- This one is easy. Getting flashed by a (presumably) drunk spectator at 2 AM during the Ragnar Relay. They looked real, and they were spectacular.

- our most disappointing race (incl. failure to start or finish) -- First thing that comes to mind is the Cheesehead Half. Went out with the goal of running a big PR (a really stupid idea considering the heat) and ended up blowing up and running 1:37

- best workout (whether due to location or pure quality) -- The run I did past the White House and around the monuments in Washington, D.C. was pretty cool. Not much for quality with all the starting and stopping, but a neat experience regardless.

- oddest workout moment --

- funniest experience in training or a race -- Not sure if this qualifies, but it was pretty damn funny watching/listening to my friend Jay drunkenly yelling at the Boston Beer Works employees for (allegedly) stealing his pistachio cannolis

- best memory of one of the other guy's experiences this year -- Gotta be Wraith getting the monkey off his back with the big PR at Veterans. Glad I was there to see it.

- proudest achievement of the year -- New half marathon PR of 1:27:52

- specific goal for the year ahead -- I still want to run a sub-3 marathon, but I'm only planning on running one marathon in 2011 (Boston), and I'm not sure if that's the place to do it. More likely at Houston in January 2012. If I can pick up the swimming, thinking about attempting my first HIM in July.

:lmao:   ...he wanted to get this posting done early so he could use the down-time after Christmas to chat with his closest running friends. ;)

Kidding aside, we did have a fun, fun day here tracking the Boston race last April.

If your old ### would've gotten there a year earlier, you could've been part of that group. ;) ETA: And you damn well better be ready to party if you think you're going to hang with us this year!

a) b) Oh, no, you youngsters go have your fun. I'll probably be hunkered down in my hotel room writing a research paper, anyway. :kicksanotherrock:

Did 5 miles today with 4x hill repeats. This was my first actual hill workout since pretty much my HS days. There's a decent little "valley" just around the corner from my house (I live in DE so don't picture some huge CO style valley). It has a pretty good incline on each side and is right at a half mile long, end to end. The eastbound side is 0.3 and the westbound is 0.2 with the westbound being the steeper side.

I ran the long way out to the valley (2mi) at a comfortable pace, hit the valley 4x at about HM pace and then head back the direct route home (1mi). For not doing any hills training previously, I felt really strong today. I was fully recovered from each climb before the next hill came. This is the 2nd time in recent weeks that it seemed like my legs were pretty blah until I hit a hill. After running the hill, they really woke up.

I plan on doing this weekly with adding an extra hill climb each week up until the 10 miler on 1/16. We'll see how it goes.

I did a 6 mile tempo run today. I was struggling at about the half way point but I never stopped. I had to wear a heavier shirt due to the temps being in the low 70s here. I hear it may drop into the 50s by Saturday. I am scheduled to do a 7 mile long run on Saturday. I am really digging the structured training plan.

I had blood work and saw the doctor this week. I am looking good. I have improved in just about every thing. He says he can tell I am exercising by the results. He on the other hand looked like hell. I think he may have gained 20 lbs since I last saw him.

35 degrees and raining all day today. Not running weather. Bike trainer tonight and a dreadmill run tomorrow.

Congrats!

 They must have chlorinated the hell out of the pool since Monday. My tongue feels like I drank a dozen martinis last night and my skin feels like it shrunk a few sizes. One of the old timers recommended orange juice to combat the dry mouth. This made things worse. I did get in a good swim regardless. Did 2,500 yards in 2 sets, 1,500 & 1,000 in 47 minutes with a water break between sets.

10 miles for me last night before the snow started falling. Decent run. I am still trying to find my stride when there is snow on the ground. I know it will make me stronger, but getting back into it is hell. Speedk work will be fun in this stuff.

-----------------

Won't be on again until Monday.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Was hoping to do a run last night or this AM but it didn't work out.

Kids and wife are sick and work is nuts. I literally couldn't spare the time.

Hoping to slip out late tonight (after 10 p.m.) once everyone is in bed for an 8 mile run. We'll see if I have the energy.

Ned - good hills! Hills are such good training.

Prosopis - good health!! That's super news.

--

8 miles for me this morning. Steel Curtain, that's some kind of dedication to even think of catching so many miles so late at night.

Prosopsis!!! Awesome to hear. While we joke in here quite a bit and have fun posting what each of us are doing; your results are much more important than the results of any races we could possibly run

SteelCurtain: HTFU! Git r' done.

My legs felt great this morning, and I got in another 22 mile bike ride. Both knee and calf are feeling might fine! Tomorrow will be a swim, and the weekend will hopefully see another run, and a longer ride.

Having a case of CRS and can't remember if I posted this here, Ironman Worlds (Kona) NBC broadcast is this Saturday @ 4pm EST. I won't be around on Saturday to watch the whole thing, so it'll be DVR'd and I plan on doing a trainer ride on Sunday while watch the broadcast. I watched a lot of the Webcast live, but love the NBC coverage. The slow-mos of the swim start get me FIRED UP and I have to admit I like the human interest stuff and tend to get a bit misty. Didn't want anyone to miss the broadcast that is interested.

Thanks, 2Young. My plan for Saturday is to knock out a double-digit run in the morning and then hop on the bike trainer in the afternoon while this is on. Hoping it will help pass the time....In related news, based on a friend's recommendation, I think I'm going to pick up an Xterra Vortex 3 fullsuit, but I'm going to wait until it goes on sale. Lists at $400 right now, but my friend told me that they'll go on sale for 50% off. He has one and likes it. Something about this

makes me wanna get one, too, and it's not the dude talking....ETA: They've got them on their eBay store now for $215 with free shipping. Same return policy, warranty, etc. No idea why they'd sell them one place for $400 and another for $215, but whatever.

tri-guys: Assuming the swim lessons go well this winter, I'm thinking about targeting this Elkhart Lake olympic tri (1.5K, 45K, 10K) on June 11, and assuming that goes well, maybe doing the Door County HIM on July 17.

Note to 2Young: The Elkart Lake tri has a Clydesdale division!!

My thinking is that I'll still be primarily run-oriented over the winter, but I'll have my weekly swim lesson, and I'll try to also get one the trainer once or twice each week. Then I'll have almost 8 weeks between Boston and Elkhart Lake to really focus on the other two disciplines. By then it should be nice enough to bike outside and (hopefully) try a couple of open-water swims.

Sound like a good plan?

4 miles in the snow today - fun stuff! It was the first time I ever went for a real run in the snow and it was a lot of fun. I got quite the number of odd looks from neighbors as I chugged along. Footing was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting.

I was originally planning on doing my run outside today, but we got several inches last night so I bailed and took it inside instead. I have to admit that I've never run in real snow before, not so much because of footing but because it seems like my shoes would get soaked or frozen. For you guys who do this, how deep is the snow that you're running in if it's fresh and not packed down? Do you do anything special for your shoes/socks or just standard stuff?

Replying to this & your wetsuit post: First off, clyde = :bag: As for the wetsuit, I have two concerns. If by full, you mean full arms, I would go try one on somehow to see what it feels like. I have to mentally calm myself in my full as I get very claustrophobic in the water in it. Its less of an issue in my farmer john (no arms). Second, and of greater concern is how hot it'll be for the HIM. You will burn up in a full (if it is even legal). If you decide to get it, I'd go the eBay route. :knockwood: I haven't been burned yet on tri gear. The timing doesn't look too bad, BUT, I'd sure want to have you swim 65+ lengths (at once) of a 25 yard pool at once over the winter a few times to know you can do it. Having been a non swimmer jumping in to this sport, I had to know I wasn't going to drown.

It wasn't any serious snow - just an inch or so. I've been wearing regular socks and then an old pair of Wigwam wool socks over top and my feet have been toasty. I didn't notice any moisture.

SmartWool for winter running.
Looks good. I've just been wearing my (thin) compression socks and then some fleece socks over them = thickness of my regular running socks ...but warmer due to the double layer. With the normal striding of a run, I haven't found snow to be much of an issue if it's 2-3" or less. You just have to have confidence that there's not hidden ice underneath.gruecd - your tri plans seem reasonable to me.

Ok....just got back from 5.25 miles in 20 degree darkness. Not bad. Only had one car pass me on the back roads.

8:24 pace, so I'm pleased with that as I was bundled up.

Onward we go. 20 miles either Sat or Sun unless this Noreaster comes in and then the long run will get pushed to Wednesday-ish.

They were selling them for $150 a couple of weeks ago. Hang tight.

With my wife ready to give birth any day now (induction scheduled for Monday), I haven't been running nearly as far as I'd like, so I haven't been checking in here too often. Been going to the gym more often as I can run a decent distance and still be within 15 minutes of home, but I hate treadmills so I vary it up - 30 minutes on bike, 30 minutes on tread, 10 minutes row, and some weights has been a recurring workout. When the baby comes, I hope to run more, assuming it (we chose not to find out the gender this time) sleeps as well as our 3rd son did, I'll be able to run often. If it sleeps like our 2nd, I'm screwed.

I bought the sleeveless for $100 last summer, I like it better but can certainly see why people prefer having sleeves.

Adidas makes an inexpensive Trail Shoe that is made for winter. I think I got these on sale for less than $40.00. For snow running, these are great and keep the feet moderately warm. When it is icy, I wear my Merrell Trail Shoes with YakTrax. I was at Costco this past weekend doing some Xmas shopping and saw some of these in an off brand. The coil looked about the same. When I run in deeper snow where my feet will get wet, I Glide my feet to avoid blisters.

4 miles this morning in 41:32. Not a bad run but I was really surprised I could finish it without fainting. This week has not been a good eating week :fishing: , every time I turned around there was more food laying around at work. I have a Christmas party tonight, then dinner on Christmas Day.

The good thing is that I am off work until January 3rd. Sometimes working at a school is a good thing. :)

Anyone ever run one of these?
I have a couple of friends that did the one close to Chicago last year. Based on what they had to say, this is on the must do list and a buddy of mine from the Metro-Detroit area has been in contact with the RDs for Warrior Dash to see if they can find somewhere to do one within an hour of Detroit.______________________

Got out and did my first ice and snow run of the season today. Were having a heat wave, with temps just above 20. In to the wind was a drag, but once out of the wind I enjoyed it. Just under 5 miles run. Trying to make room for another massive holiday meal tonight at my wife's company night out Xmas party tonight.

2/3 of the way through my "triple-threat" workout. Up at 6 AM, dressed and to the local school gym for pick-up basketball from 6:45 until about 8 AM. Came home, got a couple of things done, then back out the door at 10 AM for 10-mile run in sub-zero wind chills. Averaged just under 8-minute pace. In another hour or so, I'll turn on the Ironman World Championships on NBC and hop on the bike trainer for a while.

Then tonight, part four of the workout....12-ounce curls. :homer:

Nice! I'm all over this for the PA run in June. I'm passing the word around to all my riding buddies to try and get a crew together. Looks like a friggin' blast!___________________

Had 3mi @ race pace today (~8:25ish for the 10mi race). In typical fashion, I went out too fast and couldn't slow down (8:02). I felt fast/loose and tried to settle down, but the pace never followed. :hifive:

9 on the docket tomorrow. I am sort of dreading it since the trails I like to run my long runs on are under ice/snow now. I'm hating the idea of trying to mix 9 miles around the neighborhoods.

You're nuts. :hifive:

My GPS on my IPhone screwed up today on my long run. I think I did about 16 very hilly miles. I'm guessing nearly 700 feet of vertical on two different inclines. So it was a hard 16 miles.

Looking forward to tapering down, that's for sure. Pretty sick of these long runs.

22 days until marathon.

7 miles for me today. I put off my run until 1:00 this afternoon. I was going to do it first thing in the morning but 40 is just to cold. I waited until it hit 65 and I was gone.

We were planning on doing one in Michigan before the travel plans fell through. Hoping to get into one this summer or next fall. They sound awesome.Looking through the events, I've been paid to do most of these. Slightly different circumstances

Just a casual 7 miles for you! :) 18 degrees here this morning, plus a steady west wind. Did 8 miles, with 6 at marathon'ish tempo - 8:00/mi out (into the wind), 7:45/mi back.

Just a sedate 7 miles for me today. :lmao: 8:10/mile average - nice levee run down here in New Orleans. Climbing consisted of one 15 foot hill - up the levee. :lmao:

You guys are still WAY faster then me. I am sticking to the runners world plan combined with Mcmillan calculator. The runners world plan has me doing the long runs at 12:00/mile avg. I have been doing them at 11:30/mile avg which is the Mcmillan number. I am hoping this will all translate to some speed in the future. I have never had to walk during this training plan which for me is huge psychologically. I have a 7 mile speed work scheduled for Wednesday. The speed is picked up to 9:48 for that.

Skipped church this morning because my parents are visiting, so I got in five miles while everybody was sitting around nursing their cofee. It was zero when I went out, but the complete lack of any wind made it really nice.
