Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

Tried something new today in preparation for the survival tri. Ran to the pool, swam and ran back. Interesting results. Averaged 8:08 MM for the 2.4 miles there. I goofed up the 310XT getting in the water, so I don't know what I swam the 1,500 in, but I was surprised how easy it was to breathe going right from the run. I treated it like a race and got my stuff off quick and got in the water and went to swimming. If anyone was looking, I had to look like a compete dork. I did not notice any effects from the run and swam strong. Only ill effect was some foot cramping, but that mat have been from a busy workout week and not directly tied to the run there. At 1,500, I got out, tossed on my stiff quick and ran back (looking like an even bigger dork leaving the pool soaking wet. Different story on the 2nd run as my legs felt real heavy. While I really wasn't trying to push things, I could only average 8:49 MM for the 2.4 mile run back. Lots to work on before now and August to get used to running after swimming.

Anyone racing this weekend?
Big Fish Tri SundayI've decided I don't care what people think. I'm sure I looked foolish to everyone at stony creek when I was putting on my wetsuit to swim. So what you did wouldn't even phase me these days.
I forgot you mentioned you are doing this one. You are off to a great start this season, go kill this one!
Thanks BTW I couldn't get into Anchor Bay since it was sold out. :(

Good luck to all of the racers this weekend. Especially to Grue and is mini-ultra.

This week was a short week with today's long run only 5 miles. It was only 73 with 93% humidity but it felt so much hotter. To be honest I barely made it the whole 5 miles. I also realized that there is probably no way I can run a marathon in November.

I haven't lost as much weight as I hoped and running even the 8 miles I did last week took a lot out of me. I could probably go out and do the marathon and finish in 6:30 or 6:45, but that is not really what I want. I want to run a marathon, and do it in under 5 hours. So I decided this morning that for right now I am going to concentrate on shorter distances, losing weight, and getting stronger. With my assigned Chase distance of less than 12 miles I want to be able to go as fast as possible in each leg. There are a few half marathons, a 10 mile race, and almost a 5k every weekend throughout the fall and winter in my area. That would give me a base of tow years and many races, which will hopefully lead to a successful 26.2.

I have a free gym membership through my insurance plan, so next week I am going to start this exercise plan. The cardio workouts will be my runs.

Back from my 10-miler.

First, before I forget, the important stuff: 5532 and 1195. I'll update once the race pics featuring these outstanding athletes are posted. Also, I saw Grue's friend Meg, who wins lots of the women's races around here and gives Grue merciless amounts of crap on FB. But since I know her only from racestalking and Grue's FB, I declined the opportunity to introduce myself. Thought it might have been a little awkward explaining how I "know" her.

Considering how little I've been training, today's effort was actually solid for me. Time was 1:25:09, pace of 8:31 per mile. First 5 mile pace was 8:34 (overall place 852), second 5 miles was 8:28 per mile (overall place 596). The final 5, especially the final 2, are pretty brutally uphill. I wasn't surprised to see my second-half placement was better - many people crashed and burned in mile 9 - but I was surprised to see I actually picked up the pace uphill. When I showed up to race, my Garmin battery was dead, so I had no idea throughout the race how fast I was going - just tried to keep it comfortable as long as possible, and then not to slow down once it stopped being comfortable.

But the thing that really hit home with me was how out of shape I've allowed myself to get. A year ago, I could have done this race at least 1 minute per mile faster. So it was frustrating for me. I never want to line up for another race knowing that I'm not anywhere close to prepared to do my best. Hopefully that feeling of frustration will help fuel me to start running again this summer. We'll see.

:hey: Just got back from a local 10K. This is a very small event, and I would guess there were 60-70 entrants, 10-15 of which were area high school and college runners. Temp was about 70 with mild winds, so conditions were about as good as you could reasonably expect for mid-June. Finished in 48:40, which is "only" 45 seconds off my PR. Obviously 45 seconds is a non-trivial amount of time in a race of this distance, but I'll take it. As much as I don't like 10Ks, I really need to find one in the fall or spring -- when the weather figures to be very good -- and really train for it. There's absolutely no reason why I can't knock at least a minute or two off today's time, seeing as how I'm not currently in anything close to mid-distance racing shape. Anyway, now that I'm starting to feel recovered from Fargo, I need to figure out what's next on the horizon. I'm starting to setting on the idea of targeting the Sioux Falls half-marathon in September as my next "A" race. My 1:48:xx HM PR isn't super-soft, but it's do-able and would be a good goal.GL to everybody else racing, and good luck to gru to on his 30 mile fun run.
 NiceI am also finding I like the longer runs rather then the short to mid range. I just dont think I am ever going to be a "speed" guy and I like the accomplishment of distance.

I got up early today for my long run of 11 miles. It worked out much better. I would guess it was about 70 at 4:30 am when I started. Sun came up aprox 5:20-5:30 and the temps immediately started going up. I had some entertainment searching out islands of shade from mesquite trees as the sun hunted me. It went well but I do think starting at 4:00 am next week would be even better. I saw coyote, bob cat, snake, and one of the fastest jackalopes I have ever seen. That thing had to be doing 70 mph. I also saw multiple birds and bugs. It was a really fun run to watch the desert wake up.

According to my plan the long run is supposed to be done between 11:02 and 12:02 avg pace. I did it at avg pace 11:34 so I was happy with that.

For you city folk that have never seen a jackalope- http://www.jackalope.com/legend.htm

VERY cool! and listen to you ...11 mile run, right on pace.The_Man - there's something to be said for running by feel and not by the clock. Well done!

Per FB, gruecd cruised through his 30 miles. I did 10 miles between some yardwork.

Podium visit? No qualifiers for field size.
I didn't wait around for awards and the result aren't up online yet, but there's no way I was even close to an AG (M 26-39) podium. Based on previous year's results, I should be a little below the median.prosopis -- Getting out there super-early is great. Just be sure to avoid any wildlife that might, you know, kill you.

The Man -- Way to get back out there. 10 miles sans training is no joke.

Great job today guys.

The_Man - you ran a ten miler at a solid pace with no training. You're still a stud. You'll get right back in shape in no time flat.

GB my wife wanting to come back out for another race this weekend. I'm having so much fun with these 5Ks. We both brought home the hardware today. Both first time AG podiums for us.

I pulled the same watch stunt that The_Man did. The watch lasted for a little over a mile so I went by feel for the most part. First mile was 6:51 and it felt much easier than last week. I was pretty iffy about that, but went with it. I was trailing a guy the entire race and was able to chip away at his lead up to 3.0, but wasn't able to get him at the finish. Our 6th gears were nearly identical and he finished about 10 feet in front of me. What a friggin' blast. I ended up coming in at 21:46 good for 3rd AG and 10th OA. It was a smaller race (~150 runners), but I'll take it!

31 more seconds off of last week's PR. I'm only 27 seconds off of my fastest ever 5K (21:19 back in HS days). This is like a dream. It makes me wonder if I'm just learning how to take it to the edge more and more with every race.

Ned - Congrats to you and your wife on a great run!

My update --

After my 7 mile race last week, I fell off the wagon and didn't run at all until Friday.

Friday -- 3 miles at 8:29/mile pace. It was nice and easy and felt good.

Saturday -- 5.6 miles at 9:14/mile pace. Just a bear. Tired, middle of the day, hot, I pushed my three year old in the jogging stroller. Just a BLAH run. Yuck.

Sunday -- 13.5 miles at 8:51/mile pace. Could have gone a bit faster and/or longer. Overall, felt decent. Good to get those miles up as I now begin to zero in on a Oct. 9 marathon.

Happy Father's Day to all you dad's. I'm gonna spend the rest of the day with my kids! Enjoy.

Happy Father's Day to all you Dads out there!!!

Treated myself (and my wife) to a one hour

class this morning. I have never done an organized spin class, so this was a crusher and there was a puddle surrounding my bike. I've ridden spin bikes as part of indoor triathlons and the dynamics of having the bike move worked the entire body (arms, core and legs). I have a 5 class package and wish they would open up one of these closer to home as I would think seriously about doing an unlimited package over the winter. After class, we wandered around downtown Birmingham with a Starbucks. There are a couple of huge yoga studios in the same area so it was me and about 200 lycra clad women wandering the streets.

Forgot to add in my update, a quick brag, not about me, but of another member of my athletic family. At 38, my sister ran her first 1/2 marathon yesterday (at 3,000 foot of altitude) in 1:53, finishing 10th in her AG (and, at 4'11', she would have owned the Mini Me Division if there was one, I'll have to work on getting her to despise the Athena Division).

Big Fish Triathlon

Perfect weather.

I thought I would have a chance to podium after looking at last years splits. Well that didn't happen.

17 people in my age group and I came in 13th. Swim 3rd 10:40 Bike 10th 42:04 Run 15th

So how do I run faster... HELP!

Way to go!!Where did your wife place?
Thanks guys! she took a 3rd also with a 30:27. Over two minutes off her time from last week. I wish she'd actually train instead of casually running once or twice a week. I think she's got some talent. But, as long as she keeps getting out there and is having fun that's all that matters. And a big happy fathers day to all of the dads today.

I recently moved to a new city. There are a lot of bike paths around that are great for running. But not all of them have mile markers. Do you guys use anything to calculate distances? In the past I've done most of my running on gravel roads so I could just get the distance by driving it but that isn't an option here.

I'm pretty sure all of use use a Garmin watch in one form or another. Personally I use the Garmin 310.

Yeah, like Dexter said, pretty much everybody in this thread has a Garmin. I wonder sometimes how anybody ever trained without one of these.

Fair enough. What's my best option for under $200?

Garmin 305 / 405 are both under $200. Some like the the 305 for the bigger screen while the 405 isn't as big.

The 305 is big, but is probably the best value.

Yep. Piece of cake. Like I said before, ran with a friend of mine who's turning 30 tomorrow; her grandmother died on Wednesday, so the fact that we were running Grandma's Marathon had special meaning for her.

It rained all night, and it was actually raining at 5:30 when we boarded the bus to the start line, but the weather for the actual race was pretty good with temps in the low 50, a bit of a tailwind, and only occasional drizzle. Did our pre-race 3.8 miles and started the race itself pretty easy, clocking 54:12 for the first 10K and 1:55:00 for the first half. Started to pick up the pace a bit, and we hit mile 20 in 2:55:25. Had a "shot" of beer and another half cup between 20-22, crested Lemon Drop "Hill" (highway overpass), and had half a Coor's Light shortly thereafter. Also downed a piece of (cold) bacon at the "Bacon Station" with about 2 miles to go. We hit mile 25 in 3:37:18 and knocked out the last 1.2 miles in 8:09 pace for an official finishing time of 3:47:05.

I felt really good the whole way and definitely could've gone further. I don't feel a whole lot different today than I do following a "normal" 20-mile long run. Almost makes me wonder what 50 would feel like....

I'll probably just bike tomorrow, but I'm guessing I'll be back running by Tuesday.

tri - Nice job on the 400s.

Ivan - Solid 10K.

The_Man - Good work on the 10-miler.

prosopis - Nice job getting out there early for the 11.

Ned - Congrats on the podium finishes.

2Young - Nice job by your sister!

Dexter - Nice work. How do you run faster? That's easy. Run faster.

You are insane! Ran a "nice and easy" 3:47 marathon while knocking down beer and bacon. Nuts.....absolutely nuts.

You're unreal (in a good way). I'd feel like I won the lottery if I ran a 3:47. Great job. I think you crush a 50.

In the meantime, you could mark a spot where you access the trail, go a 1/4 mile or so in one direction, wait for a Garmin wearer, and ask them if you can run with them until you get a mile past your start point (or, ideally, two miles, three miles). If you can get a couple of miles marked, then you could mark some more based on a steady pace run.

Garmin is the easy answer when you are out there. If you wanted to scope stuff out beforehand you can draw routes out at www.gmap-pedometer.com. Great tool for this kind of thing.

Nice races everybody! Grue is ridiculous.

Ran 13.5 miles Saturday morning. Haven't hooked up the Garmin yet but it was about a 9:30 pace overall, with my last two miles being about just over 9:00 each. I thought of Grue as I was running because it was fairly humid in St Paul and I knew Duluth was going to be about the same. Obviously it wasn't too bad there if he was doing shots and eating bacon as he was running.

Biked 22 miles Sunday evening. I bought some aerobars a few days ago and wanted to try those out. They are a little odd but I got used to them pretty quickly.

Swam 1400 yards this morning. Was shooting for 3 500's but got kicked out by the swim team with 100 to go.

Great job Ned. Way to kick some ####. 10th overall is very impressive.

Could use some advice here on how to finish my training cycle.

Saturday was supposed to be a 22 mi mountain run. Skipped it due to weather and was glad I did as trees were down all over the parkway. It was raining yesterday morning so I waited for it to pass. Well I mis-read the radar and got caught in a huge thunderstorm at mile 3. Good news was that it washed away the 20 oz of Gatorade that was running out of my ruptured camel back bladder down the back of my shorts. Bad news was we got about a 1/2 inch rain over the next 2 miles of my run. Here were my splits...

1 - 9:13 pace, 154 hr, 56 ft climb

2 - 9:06, 141, 30 ft

3 - 10:21, 132, 23 ft - slowed to a walk to look at the camelback diaster.

4 - 9:28, 154, 105 ft

5 - 9:43, 137, 102 ft

6 - 8:42, 137, 0 ft

7 - 11:44, 148, 279 ft

8 - 11:27, 148, 226 ft

9 - 12:00, 146, 318 ft

10 - 10:07, 142, 43 ft

11 - 11:01, 138, 128 ft

12 - 11:55, 143, 253 ft

13 - 10:14, 129, 56 ft

14 - 11:16, 147, 174 ft

15 - 11:20, 146, 190 ft

16 - 12:33, 142, 203 ft

16.65 - 1013, 126, 30 ft

Overall 10:38 pace and 2215 ft climbing.

I pulled the plug on the run at this point. I was feeling fine but was getting concerned about having spent 2.5+ hours running in wet shorts and shoes that were sloshing. It was a a tough call, but the loss of training fell second to potential blister issues that might really set me back. Legs are a little tired today, but no major soreness issues. The last 10 miles of climbing has more elevation gain than I'll see the entire marathon.

I have a century ride/race on Saturday that I would like to do well in and then 2 weeks to the marathon. I hadn't planned anything over 6 miles this week and one last 13 miler next Sun/Mon. Since I pulled the plug on this run early, should I be looking at more mileage this week? Maybe a 10-13 miler tomorrow morning?

I recently moved to a new city. There are a lot of bike paths around that are great for running. But not all of them have mile markers. Do you guys use anything to calculate distances? In the past I've done most of my running on gravel roads so I could just get the distance by driving it but that isn't an option here.
Yeah, like Dexter said, pretty much everybody in this thread has a Garmin. I wonder sometimes how anybody ever trained without one of these.
Fair enough. What's my best option for under $200?
Big fan of the 305

Could use some advice here on how to finish my training cycle.

Saturday was supposed to be a 22 mi mountain run. Skipped it due to weather and was glad I did as trees were down all over the parkway. It was raining yesterday morning so I waited for it to pass. Well I mis-read the radar and got caught in a huge thunderstorm at mile 3. Good news was that it washed away the 20 oz of Gatorade that was running out of my ruptured camel back bladder down the back of my shorts. Bad news was we got about a 1/2 inch rain over the next 2 miles of my run. Here were my splits...

1 - 9:13 pace, 154 hr, 56 ft climb

2 - 9:06, 141, 30 ft

3 - 10:21, 132, 23 ft - slowed to a walk to look at the camelback diaster.

4 - 9:28, 154, 105 ft

5 - 9:43, 137, 102 ft

6 - 8:42, 137, 0 ft

7 - 11:44, 148, 279 ft

8 - 11:27, 148, 226 ft

9 - 12:00, 146, 318 ft

10 - 10:07, 142, 43 ft

11 - 11:01, 138, 128 ft

12 - 11:55, 143, 253 ft

13 - 10:14, 129, 56 ft

14 - 11:16, 147, 174 ft

15 - 11:20, 146, 190 ft

16 - 12:33, 142, 203 ft

Holy crap thats a hill run! You need any climbing harnesses during that run? The rule of thumb is A three week taper so it's probably a good thing you cut the last one short. Here's a great article on the taper.

Obviously would've been ideal if you could've finished the 22, but as long as you'd already done a couple of 20-milers, it's not the end of the world that you cut it short, and it was probably a good call to avoid the blisters. I don't think I'd do anything differently at this point. For what it's worth, though, I don't know that it's the best idea to ride a hard 100-miler two weeks pre-marathon. That being said, I also don't know which one is the bigger priority for you.

I took gruecd advice and ran faster on the tread mill today. I did 7:30 & 8:00 pace.
Just to be clear, I wasn't implying that you should be doing ALL of your runs faster. I just meant that you need to incorporate some faster running ("speedwork") into your training plan if you want to get faster. Intervals, tempo runs, fartlek, and even hill repeats are all great ways to help build speed. Just remember that every workout has a distinct purpose, and as much as it's important to run your fast runs fast, it's equally important to run your easy runs easy so that you're properly rested for your "quality" workouts.

12-mile ride last night and easy 4-mile run tonight after work. Legs feel surprisingly great. Apparently the slower pace made a world of difference in terms of recovery time.

Thinking ahead to 2012. Maybe I'll race a 50-miler in the fall. :excited:

I've only done one 20 miler. Green light on 12 in the morning?I don't get good results from tapering and will lose more fitness than i gain back in rest. I do better with more rest days splinkled throughout based on past results. With a metric century the day before the marathon as part of the festivities, this ride is part of the training block.

Promising recovery intervals tonite

10 miles @ 20.1 mph, 225 watts, 132 hr (mid zone 1), 81 rpm

12 miles @ 21.6 mph, 252 watts, 138 hr (low zone 2), 78 rpm
