Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

Thanks Gru...great read. I'm a prime example of the uneven pacing he speaks of. This explains why 100 in 100 worked last winter and the 3-4 months of hr jail during marathon training worked pretty good for me. I was shocked to set my 5k pr during towards the end of 100 in 100 when I hadn't done any speed work.
Yes, GREAT read!!! The example of Joe is fascinating. Similar to BnB, a 5K that I ran nine days before Boston (and with no speed work) was 25 seconds faster than a targeted 5K last fall.I took note of this:

"What he had to do in effect was find his aerobic upper limit and slowly ease it up, not by

working harder, but by working just at the optimal pace/effort to stimulate his muscles to become

better at providing energy at this rate." (emphasis added)

And this:

"If you are not as aerobically strong as you should be ... it can only be for one (or both) of

two reasons: 1. You don’t run enough miles. 2. The miles you do run are being run too fast. Fix

either (or both) of those, and (aerobic) improvement will follow."

I was shocked to set my 5k pr during towards the end of 100 in 100 when I hadn't done any speed work. Definately confirms that I need to stay in the zone 1 (127-137) range for the bulk of my work. Cooler weathr would be a huge help in pursuing this further. Those 10 mile bench marks are something I need to adapt into a plan.
That was a fantastic read and confirms to me that I have a ton of work to do on my endurance. I fit right into his HR example (max 194). There's no way in hell I could run a marathon at 175 right now.

Glad you guys enjoyed the article.

Mixed results on the VO2Max workout today, but overall pretty good. Started with 5 miles at 8:00 pace, then to the track for 5 x 1200M in 4:25, 4:32, 4:33, 4:27, and 4:42 (oops). Average rest interval between repeats was 3:05. 1-mile cooldown for 11 miles total.

Almost called it a day after the 1st lap of repeat #4. Instead I stopped, caught my breath, and finished the last two laps and then repeat #5 (albeit 12 seconds slower than goal).

Workout was a little harder than I'd hoped, but in retrospect, it was 80 degrees and sunny, and I've averaged almost 10 miles/day since my last rest day on 8/3. Plus the first speed session of the cycle almost always sucks.

5-mile recovery run tomorrow morning, and then I leave town for Ragnar!

One of the challenges of intervals is that you often get to the point where your mind says 'stop' ...or 'don't start the next one; cut the workout short.' This is an opportunity to learn to push through those points and tough it out ...to not back down, even though the mind and body are screaming for it. I've had a few of these situations lately, and my results are mixed. But these are good challenges to face so that come race day when we hit that edge of pain, we push through it.

Started off the week with a 4/6 recovery double yesterday, and followed it up with a 10-mile GA run at 7:55 average pace tonight. Tomorrow is my first VO2max workout of this cycle. I've got 11 miles with 5 x 1200M at 5K pace. I'll target 6:00 pace, so I'll be shooting for 4:30/repeat, and I'll jog an easy lap (~2:15) in between reps.

Finally confirmed that I'm runner #5 for Ragnar this weekend, so I've got legs 5, 17, and 29. That hill in leg #17 (in the middle of the night) is gonna suck, and that last 7-miler won't be a cakewalk, either. Oh, well.

--------------------------

Ned - Good job on the LT run. Nice consistency.

tri-man - Good, strong finish.

BNB - Nice job on the 14.

Ivan - I love the "easy" 10.

Duff Man - The guy at your local running store is an idiot.

Darrin - Nice job on the intervals.

wilked - I own a Fuel Belt, but I hate it. I almost always just use my 20-ounce Amphipod Hydraform Handheld and plan my route so I can stop and refill as necessary.
DAMN!!!!

Took the family on one last vacation before school starts this week end. So, I effectively did not running. Unless you count chasing a 6 and 4 year old around a water park training. Went out this morning and decided I was going to break through the 3 mile barrier that I had been hitting. I did 4.14 in 43:20. I felt good through the whole run. Was not struggling and my breathing was very even. I think I could have done another mile but needed to get back and get to work. I have my 5K race coming up this week end but will probably stay in the 4 to 4.5 mile range for a week and then hop up to 5 the week after next. Mile 1 - 9:06Mile 2 - 9:07Mile 3 - 9:16Mile 4 - 9:20My average HR was 170 and max was 183.
That is pretty good in my opinion. I have been running regular for a few years niow and I cant sniff a 9:00 avg pace for 4 miles. :wall:

I went out and did a 9 mile GA run using HR. I took Grues advice and set my house as a halfway point to refill my water bottle. That worked great as I shaved 10 seconds off of my avg pace. It was easily over 100 out when I went out. The only thing I did not like about water at home was psychologically I think it is not as good. I am not the fastest guy and I am resolved that is the way it is. I tend to get off on distance and when home is half way mark it messes with my mind. That probly does not make sense but I like running out and back not out back out back again.

The one bad thing is that when I got home to log this run I saw it was supposed to be a 10 mile run. Not sure how I messed that up. I have a 5 mile recovery run on Friday, should I do 6 or just forget that lost mile today?

Forget the lost mile. It doesn't matter. And you're not gonna see your 9 minute pace in 100 degree weather. That is right in the "I just hope I don't die" wheelhouse. :boxing:

100 degrees? I got called a sick #### today because I said I'd drag my balls through 1000 miles of broken glass just to suck on the exhaust of a laundry truck carrying a pair of Kate Beckingsales dirty underwear...but you my friend, are a sick ####. 100 degrees?!

Kate doesn't wear underwear, my friend.:tease:

Prosopis, tell us about your HR on that run.

Quick 3 miles this morning - I haven't pushed myself in a long time now as far as speed so I wanted to briefly check where I'm at since I have my first 5K in 3 weeks.

Not bad considering the aches and pains I was feeling but I ended up with 28:26 for 3 miles on my usual course - which beats my previous best track time.

Once again, I own mile 3 - these splits are way too much: Mile 1: 10:01, Mile 2: 10:11, Mile 3: 8:14

Mile 2 is mostly uphill and mile 3 has no uphill and lots of slight downhill.

Anyway, left groin is sore as hell after I open up the strides a bit (maybe it's my peroneous muscle?), both knees were sore, and in the last 10th of a mile my upper back kinked up bad - took me a while to unkink it.

The back stuff just keeps coming back - throughout the run I've always got the feeling that I need to crack my back - that tension and locking feeling - but I can never crack it.

Oh and I confirmed my GPS is slightly off. I landmarked my miles on my last run and they did not sync up this week. Off by about .04 miles. Which is slightly annoying. I look down at my pace at one point during my first mile where I'm cruising nicely and it says I'm average 18 minute/mile and I nearly went cross eyed. Probly switch to a Garmin soon.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Awesome.Prosopis - Don't sweat the mile, I did it for you  (see below). And I know exactly what you mean about coming back to the house halfway. It's awfully tempting to just go back inside when you're having a crappy run. Great job getting 9 miles in 100 degrees. :hifive: =====================On my end yesterday was a 5mi recovery in 'only' 90 degrees and sunny. Yuck. I hate the sun right now. I was up and at'em at 4 this morning to do an 11 mi MLR. Or so I thought. I have a habit of looking ahead on the schedule in a sadistic sort of way, and for some reason I thought today was an 11 MLR, but it was supposed to be 10mi GA. With that Hadd article fresh on my mind, I wanted to be sure I kept the HR down and not let myself get sucked into pushing it if I felt good. Pretty bleh run, but I feel refreshed afterwards. 146 HR @ 9:46.

NOTE TO SELF AND EVERYONE HERE: WHEN PUTTING ICY HOT ON YOUR GROIN MUSCLE....WELL DONT LET YOUR GROIN MUSCLE TOUCH YOUR BALLS

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD AND JESUS GOD AND BABY JESUS

It feels like your balls are smoking a Newport cigarette.

Or someone is spraying your balls with a garden hose of fire and ice at the same time all while being trapped in an Arctic Wind Tunnel and Hell at the same time.

HFS.... I almost cried I laughed so hard at this. Not to find humor in your pain in all but thanks for the morning laugh Reg.

Reg...that groin problem sounds bad...you might have to talk to PSL about getting one of those shots. :)

On my part...not sure if it was heat (wasn't too bad, 85* with 50% humidity), the bit of upper respiratory crap I have been feeling, or if I pushed to fast to start, or what last night...but 3 miles into a 5 miler my energy went down big time. I pushed through another mile before giving up.

Little 3 miles recovery tonight, then 10 on Saturday to hopefully get me back on track.

Question for the guys with a garmin. Do you input your runs to the software that came with the garmin? Or is there a way to input it online, so you have access from different computers?

I recently switched from an iphone app to the Forerunner 305.

Reg: :lmao: Icy-Hot be damned!

Grue: Awesome workout, and way to HTFU! Like TM stated, working through the demons in your head that are telling you you are done, and flipping them off by going on, rocks. I miss kicking those little mother-####ers asses!

Prosopsis: I have an opposite affect when I run loops home. I have a lot of fellow runners in my neighborhood (and sometimes cows) and my ego often has me pick my pace up when I'm back in my neighborhood. I also often have my daughters outside during the loops, and I'd hate to disappoint by running a reasonable, normal pace.

CDog: Great pic; 2, 1

My update:

I get my newest shot to the groin and MRI this afternoon. It'll be a sad affair as Christine  won't be there, as they don't do arthrogram MRI's (ink injected) where Christine works. I'm still thinking of doing some manscaping just in case as possibly the only thing worse than exposing old-man balls to young people is exposing hairy old-man balls. I'll keep you posted on what I decide. Though many of you probably want to request, I won't be including :pics:

I use the RunningAHEAD online training log. You just connect your Garmin and it uploads the data right to the site. Also can be set up to automatically post your workouts to Facebook (if you're into that kind of thing).

He's here all week, folks. :lmao:

Thanks, I knew there was something to make it easier to track. The software it came with seems a little dated.
This is Reg BTW. How does the Garmin compare to the iPhone app. What do you like about it in comparison? In close to making the switch myself.
Having it on your wrist >>> big phone in your hand, pocket, etc. I hated using my iphone.
I figured that'd be the standard answer. I'm so fed up carrying my iPhone. Would rather carry a water bottle. Garmin expense = iPod shuffle expense since I need music. Just not in a spot to throw down that much coin right now. I do have some points on my Amex card was hoping to have enough by October to scoop a Gamin for free.

Garmin Connect is pretty decent. Here is a recent ride. The offline Garmin software sucks.Strava is superb, particularly for cycling. You get five uploads/month free. Example. It keeps track of particular climbs and other noted stretches of road and gives you an idea of how the studs around do them (pretty motivational, IMO).

I'm sure there are others.

Thats my explanation too. I stopped listening to music when I run so I'd just carry the phone, holding it made me feel like I would tense up a bit on my shoulders. I also upgraded to the Garmin for the heart rate monitor.

Maybe I can scour eBay for a used Garmin. I've got a 32 GB iPod touch I'll sell on there and use that to scoop a Garmin. Sometimes Im smart.

Speaking of selling things and Garmins... I have aGarmin Forerunner 201 I haven't used in 5 years that could use a new home amongst friends. Make me an offer, or I'll just put it on Ebay.

:goodposting: Much more comfortable. Many more choices. Much more robust analysis tools out there, as well as tracking. HR monitor support. etc. etc.

Before you go there, make sure to hit this blog. Guy tests these things and does a superb job. Best place to read up to pick what is best for you.

Got my forerunner 305 off Amazon for $128, new. I looked at ebay and it seemed like a pretty popular item. Used ones on ebay were going for $105-115.

Yeah, I'm trying to decide between the Garmin 305 and the Garmin 405cx. I understand that some of the newer features of the 405 models are actually annoying to runners, but I doubt I'd be shifting views much during my runs anyway. I'd probably just set the thing to autoscroll between distance/time/pace and heart rate. I'm most concerned with acquiring and keeping satellite coverage, ease of update, and not looking like I have a Star Trek communicator on my wrist. Seems like the 405s are only about 30 or 40 bucks more on Amazon right now, so I might break down.

It didn't even occur to me to look for better software for the Garmin data. Thx guys.

Icy hot sounds kind of like getting a vasectomy....only worse.

Did 4 miles yesterday and a 5k today. Cracked the 30 min mark at 29:32. That included a 40 second and a 20 second water/walk break and was still more than a minute better than my best run.

From some of the online calculators, this is about the pace I need to hit my half marathon 2:15:00 goal and I still have 9 weeks to improve.

Hi folks, long time since I last checked in here.

Currently in week #7 of the PFitz 18/55 plan in anticipation of trying to break 3:30 at Savannah in November. I've had some shaky weeks thrown in there after suffering some minor back and calf problems about a month ago. I'm in the middle of my first 50 mile week and starting to hit my stride while I gear up for an 18 miler on Sunday.

Hope you're all doing well.

Garmin Connect looks a lot like the old iphone app I used to use called Runkeeper. I liked it.

Sand: thanks for the blog! Very to the point and interesting.

Grue: thanks also for your article. I look forward to sitting down in reading it in its entirety.

re: used Garmins. I'd trust El F's, but I wouldn't trust used 305's on ebay (or anywhere). Over time the outer shell can come lose, and cause them not to work. The shell can be glued back on (which is likely what happened to many of these) and still work, but it will likely come loose again. That said, I still think the 305 is the best GPS for runners on the market, and certainly at the price point they are at. For $130, they are certainly worth the price new. My .02.

FWIW: A study done by another university just named me the most published person in my field in the U.S. over the past decade (#2 in the world). I received calls from my Dean and Department already this morning congratulating me. My head is getting pretty big, so I might not actually be able to get out of my house to get my MRI today. Tonight might therefor call for some celebration :banned: as I'm pretty damn nervous about my results consult tomorrow  .

Duffman: AWESOME that you pr'ed! Lots of running experts recommend walking breaks. Once I'm back at it, I'm going to give it a try.

Work: Great to have you back. Kick that 18 miler's ###!

I just went ahead and grabbed the Garmin 305 from amazon. I used Amex points on there and it only ended up costing me 80 bucks.

I'll pick up an arm case for my iPod or just grab a nano or cheap mp3 player from the store.

If you make sure it is the other head your MRI chick may be impressed enough to make it a real celebration...

Love my nano...just have to be careful with it as they are bad about dying if you get them sweaty.
