Ran a 10k in June (8 Viewers)

Six miles this morning with 5 @ 8:22/mile. I really thought I could be faster than that... but I couldn't. Strong wind in my face coming back so it wasn't a negative split. And my lungs aren't near 100% yet. Cleared a lot of gunk out after the run was over

For my achilles, I did a couple of stretches that Grue and the therapist had suggested and that seemed to help keep the discomfort to a relative minimum. Stretched afterwards, too, which previously I never did.

The thing about putting the running on hold for a while is that I'm really enjoying running again. This whole summer it was a necessary evil to do the triathlons. Now I get up looking forward to getting out there. Being around such a talented bunch of runners at the BC had a big impact, too. I'm pumped up!

 That's why I like tris. I get sick of stuff and tris allow me to skip sports around at will. And, yes, the BC showed how much work I have to do to be a decent runner as well. You guys are beasts.

GL with the achilles, Wraith. I understand the desire to get back into running, but that's not an injury to take lightly . . .

Good grief - give me the 30-40mph winds!
Hey, Sand, grab your wetsuit and head north. The forecast for Lake Superior is 3 story (yes, story) waves ...just your kind of lake swim from what you were telling me.

Agreed, despise the mill. Going to try and put 25 on the bike today after work going N-S with a good 20-25 mph West wind....will be interesting.

Got my bib...and a nap.

Only mad they lost my original bib somewhere...or screwed up and gave it to someone else. So, no Bucky (old childhood) nickname that resurfaced as I graduated college) printed on mine...just a plain number.

Oh well.

This exchange makes me smile.

Pretty amazing what you can accomplish in a year if you set your mind to it.

Yesterday was the start to the longest week I've ever had, mileage wise (about 21). It was pretty uneventful, except getting a little hootin'/hollerin' from some young girls (they were 18, I swear) "hey nice buttttttttt". :flex:

I'm anxious to see how I feel after Sunday's run (I've never run any longer than 6 in 1 run).

Tue - 3.5mi

Wed - 35min Tempo

Thu - 3mi

Fri - rest

Sat - 3mi

Sun - 7mi
Nice! Keep it going, Ned, sounds like it's going really well. On Sunday, just take it slow for the first 3-4 miles, and I predict you'll be surprised how great you feel for the final stretch. You sound like you're where I was just about a year ago. Watch out for the peer pressure around here - next thing you know, they'll have you obsessed with training for a marathon.
Ned was stressing about how he'd feel after 7 miles, and now he bangs out 12-milers on his lunch break. My question is - who's the next unwitting victim who wanders into this thread one day looking for tips on getting through a 5K and before he knows it is cranking through a marathon? I know Scoobygang has disavowed it, but so did I, so did Ned, so have others.
Well...pretty much probably me.Went from doing a half...saying I could never do a full.

To looking for which marathon to run next fall/winter (likely St. Jude...unless I wait and do my first marathon at Disney in 2013).
My story exactly and I blame the guys in here. I thank everyone at the same time as I blame them. :D

UPDATE -- I'm in Philadelphia and will be making the 2 hour drive to Baltimore in a couple hours. Feeling better. Fever/Chills gone. Cold has been reduced but still there. I'm feeling better but certainly worn down. I've got less than 22 hours to get as healthy as possible.Weather looking interesting to say the least. 68 degrees and sunny. Winds are expected to be 25 mph with gusts to 50! Could be challenging as it looks like miles 21-23 will be uphill and into the wind. I may be looking at 25 min/miles if I'm running uphill against 50 mph winds! I'm sure the spectators will be  Gotta bang out 2 easy miles this afternoon to just stretch out. I'll also run the first mile and last mile to see what I'll be facing at the beginning and the end.
Go get it.

A recovery week this week after the Chase. A few easy miles on Wednesday, 150 squats and lunges on Thursday (more 'good' soreness in the butt), and 5 miles today with some fartlek and hard tempos.
Had to read the bolded 3 times and still trying to figure out what you mean here.
A heavy dose of lunges and squats are effective for stretching and strengthening muscles, and I particularly notice it with the gluteal (butt) muscles ...probably because I'm otherwise sitting so much. So they're sore, but it's that good, workout soreness.
Yeah, I'm sure that's what you meant...
:lmao:

Have fun and good luck. One of my Boston friends is also running B'more. She ran 3:06 at Wineglass a couple of weeks ago, so she's just doing this one for fun.
3:06? Wow. She's doing it for fun but she'll probably still be in front of me.

Thanks guys for the wishes. I'm heading out to the course. I'll report back today/tonight.Also - good luck Ned! I hope you kick ### today!
Steel has the half in 1:47:12 pace @ 8:11  Pretty good for being sick.
Kick ###. Second half of the course is definitely tougher, and there is a lot of wind today. Hope he can finish strong and that the elements don't foul up Ned again. Also hope Steel Curtain isn't wearing anything that says Steel Curtain on it or he will be pelted with garbage by my fellow Baltimorons. My wife is running the third leg of the relay today - she was so nervous. It's her first big-city race environment.I busted out an 8-mile GMP run - ended up with a 7:26 pace and felt pretty good. Has me thinking that maybe I can do a little better than 7:40 pace for the marathon. Hmm....

:hifive: :pickle:  :pickle: :hifive: An impressive effort, having just come off of a cold/bug. lol ...beats my spring PR by 13 seconds - bragging rights for SC! Can't wait to hear details!

Prosposis -- this is my second marathon. My first was in January 2011. I ran a 3:39 on a flat course with perfect conditions.

Tri-man -- I hope to get a PR. The course is a little hilly (for a marathon)with miles 16-23 being more uphill than not. Elevation chart is here. In terms of HR, I'm guessing I'll try to run around 160 HR and 8 minute miles to get to mile 16 (assuming all goes well.) I'd love to get to mile 20 at that 8 min/mile pace. After that, we'll see where we stand. My overall goal is to improve my time from my first marathon. With the hills and a bit warmer temps (mid to upper 60's), that would be an accomplishment for me. I do know that my pace for the first half will be well ahead of that, but I'd like to build a cushion if at all possible. Sound reasonable or am I nuts?

pigskinliquors -- Its been a busy week at work so I've been running around putting out fires. I really need to rest up on Thursday and Friday so I'm ready to get after it on Saturday. Also, my left knee is acting up a little bit and "clicking" when I run. It doesn't hurt but it is noticeable. I'm not about to change anything. I'll just hope for the best. I'll try to kick some ###! :football:

Will post more later...at chickfila with the family.

Garmin at 13.1 2:02. At the finish, 2:06. There wash a screwup on the course and several of us ran .43 too much. They said they are going to adjust everyone based on their average pace. My average wash 9:21. Was running 8:50 ish over them last 2 miles. Will post more when I see them full splits.

Great experience...what a feeling coming towards them stadium we finished on...hear music blaring...then seeing my wife and kids right as I enter them stadium. Incredible...and ready for more.

Goal was under 2:10, so even with the extra, I beat that.

I want to be honest with this RR. There were a lot of high expectations that I set on myself, but I donked it up today. I was able to salvage the race somewhat which I can only attribute to all of the training I've done. There's no way I would've survived this run as my first HM without walking. I severely underestimated the hills and mother nature. This was not up to the FBG expectations, but I'm proud of how I was able to claw my way through the rough spots. For those that don't want to read on, I came in at 1:48:15 with avg HR of 182. I went out too fast and let my ego get in the way of running a smart race. I should've banked some energy over the first 7 miles, but c'est la vie. I went for it and know I didn't leave anything out there.

I went into this hoping to toe the edge and hold it there. I knew it was dangerous and had its consequences, but ouch. The consequences ended up being pretty fn painful. The course was a goofy course, but was kinda cool for the spectators. You ended up passing the start/finish area three times including your actual finish. It made the logistics very easy for the spectators, but that sucked ### running past the finish twice without finishing. I mentally broke the race up into 4 stages - first 5K, descent and thru the valley, the hill climb back into the park, and then the final 5K.

First 5K - You did a 5K loop that brought you back to the start/finish area to drop off the 5K racers. It appeared flat for the most part on the elevation chart, but it had some annoying rollers in it. I felt really good here, but got caught off guard with the elevated HR. I noted to myself that I definitely have a <21 5K in me right now. I'll have to attack that later. Splits were 7:44/174, 7:46/181, 7:52/181. Seeing those 180s scared the crap out of me and should've been my warning sign, but I let the ego get in the way and ignored it. I felt good. It was an easy pace. So I thought...

descent and thru the valley - I wanted to cruise through this and let gravity do its job. There was a good 1.5mi downhill into the river valley where I thought was going to be a nice relaxing flat run of about 3.5mi. Well, there were some twists along the way where they threw in some short out and backs up steep hills. Add in the relentless 20mph winds with what felt like 50mph gusts and I was starting to lumber a bit. Those took their toll on me and were the first signs that the race was slipping away. There was one steep/rocky hill where it felt like my knees were in my chest. I did everything I could to keep moving. I looked at the Garmin at the top of the hill to see my HR at 191. Splits thru mile 7 were 7:36/181, 7:33/182, 8:04/185, 8:01/184

hill climb back into the park - I knew this part was coming based on the elevation charts I studied. Some of these hills were the same hills I ran at my marathon in May. Nothing super steep, but long and relentless. Then there was that pesky wind. Straight in our friggin faces. It was nothing but a survival game and it was ugly. Splits thru mile 10 were 9:03/186, 9:32/184, 9:38/184. I was all but demoralized at this point. I felt like I was crawling. But seeing my kids at 10.1 gave me a nice jolt. GB those little guys and their excitement.

The final 5K - This was the same loop as the first 5K which was boring, but at least I knew what was out there. I tried to get my legs to turn over as quick as they could, but it was painful as all get out. I had a short older gentleman drafting off of me into the wind for the first 2 miles which was really lighting a fire under my ###. Smart move on his part, but GD it that was pissing me off. This was nothing but letting it all hang out and saving some pride. Splits were 8:42/181, 8:53/183, 8:31/186 for the final push. The first 2 miles were dead into the wind. What a nail in the coffin that was. At the finish I wanted to puke. I was seeing stars and almost fell on top of my 5yr old.

Overall, I didn't hit my goals, but looking back at the course and the wind conditions and I'm pretty siked. That was a true test. I can't count how many times I wanted to tuck tail and walk some of the hills when the wind hit you like a brick wall. Granted my HM PR is almost a year old now, but running this course/conditions and still beating my old time by 3:37 is a nice consolation prize.

Ned, hang in there. The wind is really, really tough today - this is twice that the elements have been against you. You'll get it next time.

Nice pacing, SC! Very nicely done.Ned - excellent race! Wind sucks. Beating your HM PR by almost 4 minutes is excellent progress, truly.

Shonuff - excellent job crushing your goal time.

In contrast to SC, my race today was a study in how not to pace. I know, I know, y'all are shocked and stunned this is coming from me.

I had a 5k this morning. Susan Komen Breast Cancer thing. I don't run 5ks much (and now I remember why). 20k people down there, though, and the scenery was spectacular. So I guess that is almost worth the self inflicted pain. Pretty flat course - mile 1 is flat, mile 2 a tad downhill with mile 3 a tad up. Last .1 is distinctly uphill, though. Course file.

Final time: 20:29 (pretty close - official results tomorrow)

Mile 1: 6:07

Mile 2: 6:46

Mile 3: 6:51

Last .1: 6:35 pace

The 6:07 first mile is right around what I figure I need to crack 20:00. Obviously I couldn't properly hold that kind of time and certainly did not hold a decent pace thereafter. Could have probably shaved :10 or so off with decent pacing that matches my ability level. As with most 5ks it was painful from about mile .5 onward. Still a PR by about 30 seconds or so (my last PR was fuzzy on time, but about 21). So still reasonably happy and honestly about what I figured I was capable of. Still butt slow compared what I need to be to be competitive in short tris, but a step in the right direction.

Garmin has me at 2:02.57 for 13.11 miles. Online I was 2:07.02 for what turned out to be 13.6.

593/2500ish overall...well 2500 was the cap. Highest I saw so far in the results page was 1774.

80/149 in my age group.

Mile 1...10:11...153 HR

Mile 2....9:44...161

Mile 3....9:41...161

Mile 4....9:38...162

Mile 5....9:37...163

Mile 9....9:22...170

Mile 10....9:04...172

Mile 11....9:08...174

Mile 12....8:52...178

Mile 13....8:48...181

Mile13.11...:55...184

Mile13.62..4:29...185

Pretty pumped how I felt around Mile 6,7,8 to kick up the speed, and that I could keep dropping it when I got to 12 and 13. Though, mile 13 I was close to being out of gas til I heard the music and people cheering. No way to stop me then.

Other than the mileage screwup...well, and bib screwup where I didn't get my old nickname on it...it was a very well put together race.

Great volunteers and people cheering...a high school drumline on mile 5 that was awesome. Some marines handing out water at mile 10 were great too.

Definitely felt the amount of training was huge. Perfect weather...53* and no wind to start. Just a great day.

Im not sure how some of you stalk and remember bib numbers...I was trying, but got home and I have no clue what the numbers were...but there was some great...um...scenery. I will try to find some when the pictures get posted.

Sorry you are disappointed but that sounds pretty good to me.

Thanks guys for the wishes. I'm heading out to the course. I'll report back today/tonight.

Also - good luck Ned! I hope you kick ### today!
Steel has the half in 1:47:12 pace @ 8:11  Pretty good for being sick.
Baltimore Marathon - Race ResultsSteelcurtain at the Finish point in 3:36:46.

Pace: 8:16 min/Mile

Nice job :football:

:lmao: Imagine that :lmao: 6:35 pace seems fast to me!! Congrats!!!

* I despise the susan komen foundation and refuse to run in any of their races. Komen is a foundation of deceit and lies.

Garmin has me at 2:02.57 for 13.11 miles. Online I was 2:07.02 for what turned out to be 13.6. 593/2500ish overall...well 2500 was the cap. Highest I saw so far in the results page was 1774.80/149 in my age group.Mile 1...10:11...153 HRMile 2....9:44...161Mile 3....9:41...161Mile 4....9:38...162Mile 5....9:37...163Mile 6....9:11...168Mile 7....9:20...170Mile 8....9:18...170Mile 9....9:22...170Mile 10....9:04...172Mile 11....9:08...174Mile 12....8:52...178Mile 13....8:48...181Mile13.11...:55...184Mile13.62..4:29...185Pretty pumped how I felt around Mile 6,7,8 to kick up the speed, and that I could keep dropping it when I got to 12 and 13. Though, mile 13 I was close to being out of gas til I heard the music and people cheering. No way to stop me then.Other than the mileage screwup...well, and bib screwup where I didn't get my old nickname on it...it was a very well put together race.Great volunteers and people cheering...a high school drumline on mile 5 that was awesome. Some marines handing out water at mile 10 were great too.Definitely felt the amount of training was huge. Perfect weather...53* and no wind to start. Just a great day.Im not sure how some of you stalk and remember bib numbers...I was trying, but got home and I have no clue what the numbers were...but there was some great...um...scenery. I will try to find some when the pictures get posted.
Nice  That is about the pacing I strive for. I am not sure I will ever hit it but I will be more then happy if I do.

Where'd ya get the hyperbaric chamber to recover from last weekend? DAMN. Oh, and, nice SANDbag too Mr "I am just running it as a company thing and not for time" :P Great race, congrats!

Shooting for < 18:59 on 11/27. On second thought, what's that PR of yours again, Grandpa? :boxing:

Ned...please schdule yourself a training 5k. Bring your hr monitor and run it for time...no sprint finish allowed. Record your average hr over the last 10 minutes or so. Whatever this number is, don't ever exceed it in a distance event (except to finish). That said, that's an amazing hr performance. That was some major suffering you endured.

At the end of the race I was surprised my noodles of legs were holding any pace at all! And I'm not a fan of Komen, either. But it is a company thing and when I can go and chat with the CFO it is a good thing (and I did that).

2Y, yeah, I don't know if my legs are quite back to snuff. Even worse I folded over my ankle pretty bad on Thursday and was unsure if I was going to run (luckily it didn't bother me). The time I set indicates that I ran decently, though, so maybe I'm recovered.Tri-man - you are a machine, so go for it. The question is are you a 20:29 machine? :boxing:

I get what you're saying and will take you up on it. Am I allowed to go balls out for the whole race?? I am willing to bet the average would be about 185ish based on the set of 5Ks I ran this summer. I ran like a total donk today. It's a wonder I didn't end up on a stretcher.

Hey guys,

I'm alive. A very interesting race. I'll put up a RR in the next day or two. Spent the day with my sister and her family as well as my wife and kids. Heading to bed and have a 5+ hour drive home. It may not be until Monday but I truly appreciate the nice comments.

Keep running!
