Ran a 10k in June (6 Viewers)

Oddest workout moment: Probably my first bike ride after Dr. finally diagnosing what was wrong with me, after struggling for 8 months with extreme pain after each workout. With minor adjustments on my setup, I actually had zero pain, and even felt better after that first ride.
We're glad you got there, GB.Mine:

Favorite race: Easily the Bourbon - for all the reasons you might think of. In addition, I don't think I'll ever forget how brutal that last leg was. Up all night, hardest, longest (8+ miles) leg, all uphill, temperature through the roof. The last mile had a set of 9 little 30 ft up and down rollers I sure will never forget. I've never pushed so hard in a race. I was so tired I didn't have the energy to unwrap the wristband thing for 2Y - I handed it off in a little ball (sorry about that). And despite being in complete agony as I rounded the last corner I was a little sad my running parts were over. Odd mixture of feelings.

Favorite moment within a race: Coming up to the end of my HM in February. You can't see the clock until about 200yds to go and when it was there and I knew a sprint would get me to sub 1:36 - I knew at that point I had a really good day.

Most disappointing race: The one Oly tri I did. Crushed the swim and then felt like ### and way underperformed on the bike and run. And missed 2:30 by a few seconds on top of that.

Best workout: Before my 5k swim I do a "fast day". This year I did two. First day was a 1:00.6 100yd and a 2:15.9 200yd. Pretty decent. Second day was a 5:59.59 500yd effort. I am more proud of that 500yd time than the time I put in for the 5k (which I crushed, as well).

Oddest workout moment: Sliding off the road on a 65 mile training ride. Then getting lost and biking way out of my way (bleeding the whole time) trying to get back to the car. Bad day. My left pinky, which was the initial point of impact, still hurts.

Funniest experience in training or a race: Racing a 13 year old girl in the pool (at her mother's request). Then seeing her pout after I beat her.

Best memory of one of the other guys experiences this year: For me it was tracking BnB during his Grandfather Mountain epic death race adventure thing. Easily the most insane thing someone in this thread did this year. BnB torched it. After that Dexter "destroying" Turkish (by 2 minutes in a 3 hour race) in the Iceman Cometh, Gru's 3 hour attempts (both the good one and the bad one - the bad one set the stage for the good one), and 2Y doing that crazy nine leg (or whatever it was) tri.

Proudest achievement of the year: A few of them: cracking the top 10 in the 5k swim (not bad for a tri guy), hitting that 5:59 500yd swim, my 1:35:56 half marathon, and averaging almost 24.5mph during the bike leg of one of my tris. Pretty well rounded year.

Specific goal for the year ahead: #1) Take a crack at a 40k TT and try to break an hour. #2) to get to the Iceman Cometh and break 2 hours. #3) finally have a decent Oly tri performance #4) to absolutely crush the 5k swim this year.

405CX looks pretty good and is cheaper on Amazon.

Cool stuff so far with the year end reports. I have posted this here several time before, that someone needs to write a book on the stuff we've motivated each other to do (I nominate the resident Dr. and Dr. to be).

Here is mine:

Favoriterace: Battle of Waterloo 10-Leg Survival Triathlon. For a guy who taught himself to triathlonswim just over 3 years earlier, it’s hard to put it to words just how cool itwas to be swimming across 3 different lakes with my tri shoes tuck in the backof my tri top. Plus, I got to run almost14 miles on trails for the event and I’ll take trails over pavement any day.

Favorite moment within a race: Same event as above. I was swimming across the last lake, a .7mile swim after already swimming a ½ mile and a ¼ mile swim earlier in theevent. I spotted the end of the swim andhad an almost out of body experience and couldn’t believe I was going to makeit.

Most disappointing race: Anchor BayTriathlon. 2-years earlier, in only mythird triathlon, I missed AG 3rd by 4 seconds in a large field, so Ihad high hopes for this one. It was notto be as I got thrashed so bad on the swim I had to grab kayak twice. I wanted to quit after the swim, but my sonwas there and there was no way I wasn’t going to finish what I started.

Best workout: Mine was adual event, the Howell 1-Mile Open Water Swim and Aquathon right after. With no chance of placing, I viewed this as atraining event. I had never swam more thana ½ mile OWS without a wetsuit, so it was a chance to really stretchmyself. Doing the mile swim without awetsuit and then following it up with less than 20 minutes rest to do a 1.5mile run/.5 mile swim/1.5 mile run was as tough a test as I have had.

Oddest workout moment: Basically all of Warrior Dash, if you can call thata workout. So much bizarre fun and I gotto enjoy the race running with (and more like protecting) my daughter.

Funniest experience in training or a race: Team racinglends itself to these moments and there are too many to count from both DancesWith Dirt and The Chase.

Best memory of one of the other guys experiences this year: The ZenMaster’s Spring is tops for me. To watchTri-Man crush Boston and then follow it up a few weeks later like he did was(is) awesome. And, got to see him lethis hair down and just enjoy racing at Dances With Dirt too.

Proudest achievement of the year: Trying stuff way outside my comfort zone likethe Mile swim and Aquathon and the 10 Leg Tri and encourage my racing buddiesto take similar chances with me.

Specific goal for the year ahead: Continue to live out my mid life crisis thoughracing. I am already signed up for the 10 LegTri, my second ½ Ironman and Dances With Dirt. There will be lots more racing with at least 4 more trail races and 4 or5 tris.

* If you are going to wear it as a watch, or you really like bling and have the money, get the 405. * If you already have a watch that you like, and will only use the GPS for running or riding, or want the best value for money, get the 305.
I suspect that I'm going to regret asking this, but who the hell wears his GPS as an everyday watch?? :nerd:
:bye: But I'm using a Suunto which has a separate gps unit. Thinking about switching, but after reading the write up above, the garmin not being waterproof is giving me cuase for concern. The lack of battery life with the garmin looks like a pain too.
Only going by memory here, but I thought Garmin put out a 310XT that is waterproof so it can be used for a Triathlon. I think it was a bit more pricy than the 305, but still an option if money is no object.
You are correct on the 310XT. Its huge, but when you add the quick release band and bike mount, it becomes the ultimate triathlon too. It can be paired with all kinds of stuff, HRM, Cadence/speed sensor and all kinds of power meter devices. Updates to the firmware have made it quite accurate in the water as compared to when it was first released.

Never saw the 305 before. Jesus that thing is huge. Does your left arm get bigger than your right after weeks of running?

405CX looks pretty good and is cheaper on Amazon.
I don't ever notice the size of it or that it is there most of the time.
The 305 is $139.99 on Amazon right now. Best bang for the buck, IMO.
That's without a heart rate monitor. With one it is $173.49. The 405CX with a heart rate monitor is $159.99, so it's actually cheaper.Do you use a HRM?

Does Ned use a HRM?I think Ned uses his HRM 24/7 -- although he only posts his running results here. I imagine he has a journal where he tracks his HRM while hunting, while dropping a deuce ("Hmm, 115 - might need a bit more roughage"), even while getting busy: "Honey, that was amazing. My HR passed 150 - which is high for that position - but I was able to maintain that through completion."

;)

LOL - great minds think alike.5 miles for me today as I try to strike the balance between recovery and racing a 5-miler this Saturday. My calf has been very sore since last Saturday when I did 3 6:40 miles as part of a 6-mile run. Was feeling great, but obviously am still recovering from the Marathon - I haven't been feeling great since that little adventure. Today was my first time out since then and I took it pretty easy. I think it helped loosen up my calf and made it feel a little better.

Will do 5 more easy miles tomorrow, and then decide Saturday if I'm really going to race all-out or take it a little easy. Pretty sure I know the answer, but I at least want to pretend that I'll consider backing off if I'm still hurting.

Another end of the year idea.

If everyone wants...put down how many miles you raced this year (indicate biking or running or swimming)

WOuld be interesting to add it all up for the number of miles raced by FBGs this year (approximate miles for now, we can decide if we want to go off the Garmin or not).

For me...only running

3 5ks

Warrior Dash

2 HM (1 with an extra .49 miles)

Total of 39.14 racing miles (not huge, but not bad for a first year runner...well first year with any distances since high school).

I get that my training doesn't approach most people in this thread (I'm at about 20-25 miles most weeks) but do you really need a $200 watch?

I run with a $10 watch I picked up 3 years ago. Works great. Thinking about upgrading to something with a multi lap counter. But that'd probably run me about $20 so I'll hold off for now.

LMFAO guys. Awesome.

I have worn it during hunting. I wanted to see if I could capture my HR when a shot opportunity came, but the damn thing times out too quickly when it's sitting idle. :bag:

Id say many weeks my training has not gone much over that (til later in HM training and next year I will double that)...but yes, I need this watch.Well, need is a strange word.I like having it.I am a data freak and like that it spits out HR data, average HR, average lap, lap pace, tracking my HR and pace based on the courses and hills. Helps me think about the run in advance and how my body has reacted so I know better how to train to improve. That and running the neighborhood or in places when I travel, its nice to not have to drive a car around to figure up my mileage...or in the neighborhood I don't have to run the same way every time and still know my mileage.

:goodposting: Aside from the obvious advantages of HR training :excited: , the GPS is worth it's weight in gold. Gone are the days of mapping out runs with your car or online prior to running. Just get out there and go. You'll get to the point where you know each and every loop in your area and can piece runs together on the fly.

Yes, I absolutely need it. My most indispensable piece of running equipment, after my shoes, of course.Seriously, for the kind of training I do, I need to know elapsed time, elapsed distance, and current lap pace. I need to be able to adjust on the fly if I'm running too slow/too fast, even if it feels like I'm going the right speed. When your marathon pace and your half marathon pace are only 20-25 seconds apart, training at the right pace is super important, and it's just too hard to do that without the GPS.

This was my thinking until just a few days ago. I've established a HM PR and I want to break it so I care a lot about getting my training right this time. I want to make sure I'm doing the right paces and distances during training.I don't run on a track. If I need to run an 800m interval at a 7:30 pace, for example, I do the pace by feel and stop after 3:45. I could be doing 6:50 pace the first time and 8:00 the 2nd time for all I know.

Favorite race: Big Sur Marathon. Its the only time Ive been able to say I ran a perfect race. I have such incredible memories from the whole California weekend and the race event.

Favorite moment within a race: Leg three of the Bourbon Chase. Two slower guys took off several minutes before my hand-off from Turkish Harem, and it was great sport to hunt them down …coming over a rise and finally seeing them out in the distance was an exhilarating (and successful) challenge.

Most disappointing race: Mile 2 of virtually all of my 5K races. I let myself hold back just a little bit before mile 3. I need to do more consistent 5K training and then stop that race habit.

Best workout: A 21 miler in mid-February. 35 degrees with some driving sleet/rain through most of it. The planned trail was too icy, so had to adapt and run various country roads. But the HR stayed low, the pace stayed steady, and it gave me my first ever 60+ training week. Thats when I knew I would be ready for the marathons.

Oddest workout moment: It was a race moment: Bringing it home strong on the last leg of Dances with Dirt, I look around for my teammates so we can cross the finish line together and …nothin. No sign of them. As I stand 50 yards from the finish line, 2Young jogs up, explaining that theyd been caught waiting on the previous runner, who got lost (were allowed to start a leg before the previous runner finishes to cut overall time = maximize drinking time). So I have stand and wait a couple of minutes, getting booed by a few of the spectators, until the full team was assembled.

Funniest experience in training or a race: Boston experiences: The little kids lined up high-fiving and handing out treats; the lady behind me hauling out her cell phone and informing her husband that hell know shes coming when you hear the crowd cheering for Wally …Im behind him; the almost creepy girls of Wellesley; and the raucous crowd at Boston College. Both relays had numerous moments, but Ill mention hanging out with both PSL and the Van 2 crazies after the Bourbon Chase.

Best memory of one of the other guys experiences this year: PSL acclimating to the news no competitor wants to hear, and then attacking the bike and the women of Texas with equal gusto …and his epic drive to Ky for the Bourbon Chase finish. I also second the earlier mentions sub-3:00, mountain climbs, bay swims, Waterloo, new achievements and distances of all sorts!

Proudest achievement of the year: Successfully completing the B to B Challenge, which was my goal for the year, including a marathon PR (3:37) at Big Sur.

Specific goal for the year ahead: Ill stay with running for the year ahead, so: The Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA), which I finally joined this year, has a competitive challenge for their members by age group. The most points achieved over their race circuit (top 10 count out of 16 races) brings cash prizes to the top three in each bracket. Itll be very tough Ill have to run faster. E.g., Ill need a 5K time down around 20:15 or better and a 10 mile time of 1:10 or so to have a shot at this.

Race miles for the year: 92.1 miles (all running) ...plus about 32 relay miles.

2 x 26.2

1 x 10

1 x 8

7 x 3.1

I guess it's a bit different for me. I don't think a HR monitor with a chest strap would work on me but I could be wrong about that. I map out my runs on gmap-pedometer for distance. I usually know right were the mile markers are and, from that, have a good idea of my pace. Not exact, but close. I like writing down my workout results on a post it that I keep inside of the training books I've been reading. I have to open the book to write down the results which gets me to read at least a few pages daily. When I fill up the post it I move the results to the notebook containing my training log.I may come around eventually but this seems to work for me.

Looks like it's $8 cheaper on Amazon to buy the HRM separately. Likely will do the $139.99 then look into adding the HRM if I need it later.

You want this HRM. Trust me here.
Just bought one of these to replace my last one that crapped out. I like how they have simplified the strap. The snap on the last one came undone during a 1/2 marathon. The new one should have much less of a chance of coming loose.

I am really sore today. I got the massage yesterday and I am not sure how much that added to this soreness but I am hurting for sure. Last time I felt like this was after doing my rim to rim hike of the Grand Canyon. Today at work was cool as I am still getting the  from people who cant believe I did it. I will ride that for as long as I can.

Tomorrow I am supposed to run a 4 mile recovery run  If I am as sore tomorrow as I feel today I am not sure I will do that. On the other hand I am kind of curious how much of this muscle soreness would go away after 1/2 mile or so? I will see what the weather is like tomorrow. We have had a ton of rain here since Monday. I am so happy this storm held off until Monday.

I have my eyes on a 5k in March.
You probably got the massage too soon after race. I typically wait until at least 2-3 days afterwards so that I'm getting the massage after the DOMS has set in.In terms of the recovery run, just wait a couple more days. I've got a lot more mileage under my belt, which means that my recovery times should generally be faster than yours, and yet I still typically go 4-5 days post-marathon before I resume running.

Hope that helps!
Thanks  What is DOMS?

Quite a bit less compared to last year for me, both racing and training. With tonight's swim, I'll cross 80 total miles swam for the year. Last year I finished with 90.19 and swam 86.68 in 2009. I hadn't really looked back all that much at what this year looked like to past years. November was my biggest swim month of this year, but would have only been 7th best last year. Looks like quality is trumping quantity as I had some of my best swims this year.

Favorite race: Arizona Distance Classic. This was my first distance race ever and I really enjoyed it.

Favorite moment within a race: Probably finishing the marathon but I have to say I can think of lots of favorite moments. I crossed a lot of personal milestones this year. I will go with the marathon due to the largeness of it. I have to say racing the Gabe Zimmerman triple crown a very good experience. It was nice to be part of a group that came together after such a horrible tragedy. Hearing his father speak and seeing his strength was very moving.

Most disappointing race: I again will go with the marathon. I was devastated when I realized I was in serious trouble. I had a very difficult time keeping my emotions under control. I still loved the race but that was the most disappointing moment I had during a race.

Best workout: I can not pick one out off the top of my head. I certainly had many runs where I felt very in tune with life and the outdoors. Those are always my favorite.

Oddest workout moment: I had more then one poop moment which was awkward. :bag: I would also add the time I was in the middle of the desert and I thought I heard barking. I have been told that javelina will do this but I never saw it personally. I will say there were no dogs and I felt the barking was coming from the hills. It was a strange sensation. Rattlesnake moments are also odd times.

Funniest experience in training or a race: Almost drowning myself when trying to drink and run at a race. Tripping is always funny until someone gets hurt. Coming home with my marathon medal and my 6 year old getting excited thinking I won the race.

Best memory of one of the other guys’ experiences this year: So many this year. PSL taking some horrible news and turning it around has to be at the top. Grue going sub 3. Tri man kicking ### in his marathons. The guy doing those insane long races B&B?

Proudest achievement of the year: Successfully completing the marathon. I also ran two half marathons this year.

Specific goal for the year ahead: Same as last year which I did not accomplish. I want to be able to get my avg pace below 10 min mile. I am not sure why this is such a struggle for me but it is. I also intend on really concentrating on the 13.1 distance and improving on my performance at that distance.

Race miles for the year: 63.5 This includes two half marathons and on marathon. :pickle:

Ya. I did about 85 miles this year, as well. Last year - 160. :bag: I spent time biking instead - don't regret that at all.

I only did 2 races, but I've been running all year:

Favorite Race: Carlsbad 5K. Got a top 250 medal which I didn't even know existed until they handed it to me. To get one you need to be around 7:00 pace. Broke my PR by over a minute.

Favorite moment within a race: Realizing about 7 miles into the San Diego Rock n Roll half that I would easily shatter my 2:00 goal.

Most disappointing race: Funny enough, same race. My legs and feet cramped up in mile 12 and I limped through the finish. It cost me about a minute and I was over 8:00 for average pace. My goal with the next one is to go sub 8:00 pace.

Best workout: It's very hilly around here. I'd say one of the uphill 10mi training runs in the 90deg heat because I think that hardened me and allowed me to kick ### in the cool morning weather of a race.

Oddest workout moment: Snakes crossing my path 3 workouts in a row on a dirt trail run I was doing. Started looking up snake species on the net. Turns out in southern california if it isn't a rattlesnake it's harmless.

Funniest experience in training or a race: I guess the droves of people peeing on the side of the road in mile 1.

Proudest achievement of the year: Finishing my first half at my pace. My first half ever was last year and my wife and I ran the whole thing together - crossed the finish line hand in hand. So, that one was cake. I think we did like 2:35.

Specific goal for the year ahead: Run a full marathon after I turn 40. Signed up for the Rock n Roll again - for the half. Will upgrade to full depending on how my Carlsbad half goes this January and whether I can get the miles in.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ. I pretty much haven't run at all since the birth of our second son 3.5 months ago. Started back up this week figuring three miles would be a pretty safe and easy starting distance. Struggled through three on Monday and I thought it was going to kill me today. What happened to the guy that stopped at 12-13 miles just because he was bored?

Total miles raced this year (all run): 208.31

3 x 26.2

5 x 13.1

1 x 15K

1 x 10K

1 x 5

1 x 8K

+ 38.74 miles in relay legs

I'm at 2,427.53 total miles run YTD through today, which is +5.3% YOY. I need to run 73 miles over the next 17 days to hit my unoffical goal of 2,500 miles for the year. Shouldn't be problem.

Through grue's mileage here (which is more running miles than anyone else has combined run/swim/bike and is double what anyone else raced on the run this year)...FBGs (grue, sho nuff, BnB, 2Y2B, Prosopis, Ned, tri-man, Sand, and The_Man) have clocked 753.85 miles running, 8.76 swimming, and 354.2 biking for a total of 1116.81 racing miles.

Favorite race: St. Judes Half, seeing as how it was the only one I ran! 2011 was a "focus on getting healthy year." 2012 I plan on hitting up more than a few races.

Favorite moment within a race: Not sure that I actually had a true "favorite" moment during that race. Having the kids at St. Judes out in the cold weather cheering you on is about as heart-felt as it gets.

Most disappointing race: Coming in 9 seconds away from a sub 2 was slightly disappointing. I dwelled on it for maybe 12 seconds.

Best workout: Easily the last P90X workout I had in February. I'm sure it doesn't rival completing a marathon, but finishing up that last P90X workout was a huge sense of accomplishment.

Oddest workout moment: When I started running early in the mornings in my neighborhood I accidentally sneaked up on this girl delivering news papers. She would pull into the neighborhood and stop to put rubber bands around them (at least I assume thats what was going on). Anyways, she would crank up some Brittney Spears and sing at the top of her lungs every morning. After about 2 weeks I finally startled her. Her reaction was priceless.

Funniest experience in training or a race:See above....

Best memory of one of the other guys experiences this year: I'll go ahead and make a resolution for 2012 to pay more attention to this thread. :bag:

Proudest achievement of the year: Again, easily just getting into shape. Started P90X in Jan at a stout 250 with a 40 inch waist, I could string together a 2 mile run, but it was UGLY. Now I'm sitting at 190 and my 34 inch pants are getting too big. Its self-indulgent, but I never get tired of the compliments from other people.

Specific goal for the year ahead: Run a full marathon before July when baby number 2 gets here. I'm still targeting the NOLA Rock & Roll on March 4 so it will be here in no time.

Very close to where I was...though, I think I could fit in a 42 at that point. (genetics of having a big ### and thighs that have been with me even when I was younger and running track).Down to a 36 that is getting lose hovering around 202-205 for the last few weeks.

Adding to my goal above is to get my 5k time down in the few I will do this year.

Last night's workout being any indication, I will get it down, just have not set the time goal just yet.

Pulled 6 miles with 3 mile repeats in the middle and a half mile for good measure.

Warmup of a half mile in 5 minutes.

Then went 8:43, quarter mile or so jog, 8:40, quarter mile or so jog, 8:33, quarter mile jog. Then just for the hell of it went for a 3:59 half mile before finishing up with just over a mile at 10min/mi pace to cool down.

The 8:33 and even that 3:59 while taxing, was not too difficult. Breathing felt good, stride felt good, while talking was not easy, I found I could utter a few things...HR stayed in the low 170s til that last half where it creeped up to about 178...i think it hit 180 for a second in that.

Pretty excited about getting down where I want to be for the shorter bursts.

:hifive: You are on the identical path I took. P90X really changed my life 2 years ago. Stick around here. This is an amazing crew.

I think I started P90X when you were finishing (or maybe it was my first go at it, it was a failed attempt. Moving and the wife having our first kid in the same month really made everything take a back seat.) . I haven't seen that thread in a while, I bet it gets bumped in the beginning of the year. Some time in the past year the running bug officially got me. I had gotten to the point where I was so anxious to get up in the morning and run it started affecting my sleep. I'd start running it all in my head and I couldn't sleep. Melatonin is a big help.

I feel mentally at ease too now that running is a regular thing.

And ShoNuff, its nice throwing out those Husky blue jeans isn't it? :excited:

I'm a different person when I run. It's a fantastic outlet, especially when I can sneak out for a lunch break run. It makes a world of difference.

Yeah...been slowly replacing clothes...now that its colder, I don't have much to wear.Thankfully with the new "career" path, only have to worry about some casual stuff to get me through the cold months while I continue to shrink myself.

I will ad my mileage as I have not run in 2 days from this head cold.

Raced miles 26.2 for the 2 halves that I ran and 19.3 for the Relay miles.

It was a low year for me mileage wise, but overall I think it is what my head and body needed.

Have a great day all.

Could not agree more with these two staements. There are nights I can't get to sleep because I am too amped for my morning run. You would think I would get used to getting up and running, but it has not gotten old yet. And Ned, those mid workday runs are great for clearing the head and getting back in the work grove afterward.

Adding in this and jb's half puts us over 800 racing miles run by those who listed mileage so far.Nice job...of course, a quarter of that is grue on his own.

I sleep pretty well before a good morning run.But the points made are right on, and getting up for those runs is infinitely easier than getting up to go to work. Also, that feeling does hinder me at times. For now, I do most of my weekly runs at night after the kids are in bed. So not getting started til 8:30-9ish and finishing up late...then a shower...then getting something to drink after or a small recovery snack. By the time I calm down its close to 12 (and the alarm goes off bright and early at 5:15).This all changes in January...will make my training much better timed.
