Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

Hopefully baby comes within the next couple of days. Today would be the best.
GL with that...and yes, as an accountant, eventhough I don't do taxes, would be best to have the child now...get the tax breaks for all of 2011 rather than having to wait til 2012.
There is that plus my wife's medical is a high deductible so babies are 80% off right now in my household. That alone will cost us 3200 if the baby comes after the 1st of the year.
Hmm...better get to all of those methods to make labor start...Glad we had ours when we did...I don't think we paid more than $200 a piece to have ours (that includes every appointment with her OB/GYN). Now it would be quite a bit more.
Preggers fun time is the best. It's a scientific fact.
Um, yeah, that just is not happening right now. My wife barely feels like walking up the steps, so happy fun time ain't gonna happen.----------------Forgot to comment on the shoes. I have worn Nike, Adidas, and now Brooks. I had bad experiences with Nike, but that is more my fault as I had the wrong shoe and was stubborn about getting fitted. I liked the Adidas well enough, but wanted a change this time around and went with the Brooks Glycerin 8's. They are awesome. Right now, they are comfortable throughout the whole run and there is no blistering at all.I agree with Grue in that everyone has their own opinion on shoes so it will vary depending on who you ask. I would go to a running store to make sure you get your type and then just try on a bunch of different ones to see which feel most comfortable. I know my local shop will even let you try them on and jog around the block with them on. You never know just what you will find your feet feel comfortable in.

PMB - Check out eastbay Brooks Glycerin 8's are $70. The Ghost 3 is only $50. Its what I'm in now and I've been pretty pleased. I might pick up another pair.
That is where I bought mine for and wish I had some more disposable cash laying around. They are even cheaper out on runningwarehouse.com at just under 60, which at the time of my pusrchase were not out there at that price. I am good for a couple months though so I am hoping they keep for a bit longer. Those prices are incredible for the level of shoes they are.

Yeah, probably going to buy a pair tonight. After winning a FF title...and getting some holiday cash...I have a little to spend on me (though, a lot has to go into buying some jeans and long sleeve shirts that fit me now).

I originally got into running partly because it was "free." I'm an idiot. I've spent about $250 on registration fees in the past few months, another $400ish on hotels in 2 cities, 3 pairs of shoes over the year $200ish, unsure about shirts and shorts, socks, etc. But hell, it doesn't cost a dime to run right?

made the commitment to run a half-marathon in april. haven't registered, but told a group of folks around here that i would do it with them. most of them plan on run/walking (probably more on the walking side) so i'm not sure how much help they will be in training, but i can already tell a big difference in my commitment to running. 4 runs in the last week (including christmas day).

a couple of quests for the knowledge base here. most weeks it has a longer run scheduled on the weekend and three shorter runs on tuesday, wednesday and thursday. for example on the first week it has a 3 mile run on tue, 2 miles wed, and 3 miles on thur. then a 4 miler on saturday. i understand the saturday runs should be long and slow, but what about the pace of the other runs? should the tue/thur runs be at a fairly good pace? what about the shorter run on wednesday?

what about nutrition? i'm not 100% sure my lifestyle at the moment can handle a huge change, but i also want to put myself in as good a position as possible. also, at what point distance-wise do you start taking water and/or food during the run?

seems like there was something else, but that's all i can think of right now. i'm sure i'll have many more in the coming weeks.

Any model (460, 740, 860, ...) New Balance 10.5 2E fits me perfectly and I've never had any foot problems at longer distances. There may be better stuff out there for me but my attitude if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I wouldn't say that any one brand is better/more popular than any other. Name a brand, and I'll give you a friend of mine who swears it's the best. Personally, I wear New Balance and Mizuno.
It was a Runner's World reader survey, so I'm pretty sure it is possible to say whether one brand is more popular. Better is another matter.Asics was first by a fair amount followed by Nike, Brooks and then NB.17 Seconds advice may be the best. I've worn NBs without issue all of my running career, so I should probably stick with them.

No way you can say that all models of any particular brand would work equally well for you. Your arch is medium, low, or high. You're either an overpronator or a supinator, or you have a neutral gait. There's a shoe type (neutral, motion control, or stability) that's right for you. If you're running any kind of serious mileage in the wrong type of shoe, you're tempting fate, i.e., an injury waiting to happen.I wear a neutral cushioned shoe. One time (before I knew better), a guy at a shoe store sent me home with a pair of stability shoes. The knee pain was almost immediate.

Fair enough. I guess I was just speaking anecdotally about my running friends. They're all pretty serious runners, and there's definitely no clear-cut brand preference.

$3200+the tax deduction? Cesarian time!---On my end, swim reclamation week continues. Managed 1:10 and 2:37 for the fast 100 and 200s. The 2:37 is quite good for right now - very happy with that. Finished up with 5x100 on 2:00. Ugh. That hurt. Did hold 1:17-1:22 for those. (And yes I know this bores the runners in here to tears).

Holy crap it's windy out there today. Weatherman says it's 20-25 with gusts to 40. I fricken' believe it. I had to push back yesterday's scheduled tempo run to today due to heavy rain. I was close to pushing it again due to the wind, but couldn't stand the thought of skipping twice in a row. So I sucked it up and went out there. God that kicked my ###. The wind was swirling a lot which made this extra fun. From headwind to cross winds to wind straight at my back. :loco:

All in all it was a good workout. 8mi with 4 tempo - 2 up, 4 tempo, 2 down. The 4 tempo miles averaged 8:07/174.

In case you're interested, here's the woman from my 5-mile race in Christmas sweater and elf hat. Turns out she's not really that big, but she looked huge from behind as she went by -- and her thighs are about as big around as the waists of the more typically emaciated female runners next to her in this pic.
Kinda cute ..vs. the next pics (182, 183), where the woman is kinda scary.
I like this girl. She seems to have some nice curves. Wish she would smile though.

I can't tell if she's a 5.5 or a 9.5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Ended up getting the NB 890s. It was upon the recommendation of an angry German lady that works at Runtex downtown who is something of a folk hero in the Austin running community.

"Walk! Stop! Turn around. Walk again! I be right back with shoes.

Walk in shoes! Stop! Turn around. Walk back! Those good shoes for you."

Love the 890s. They're my racing shoe for distances up to the half marathon. Anything longer than 15-16 miles, though, and they give me blisters.

I do Pete. I probably not be the best person to talk about them from a technical stand point because I just jog/run a few miles a couple times a week. But they have worked for me and are the only "shoe" I have found that allows me to jog/run over a mile that doesn't apply to much pressure on my right foot to the point that I have sharp pains in it the next day and cannot continue to run. If you have questions send a PM or talk here or the next time in Gears.

I finished 2011 on a good note with a quality week of off-season maintenance:

Sun: SRD

Mon: 10 miles GA

Tues: 5 miles recovery

Wed: 5 miles @ HMP

Thurs: 5 miles recovery

Fri: 15 miles w/ last 3 @ MP

Sat: SRD

This puts me at 171 for the month. The thing I've really found over the last six months or so is just how big a difference recovery runs make. Back in June, if I tried running five days in a row, I would be absolutely beat and would have to drag my ### through runs 4 and 5. Now I find that I do this all the time and it's no big deal at all. Those recovery days stuck in there in strategic spots make it so much easier to string together a bunch of consecutive runs while still being rested enough to have some good workouts 2-3 times a week. And of course they add volume too.

Hope everybody has a good New Years.

I love it when the proverbial light bulb goes off for someone. Good, strong finish to the year, Ivan!

Just got NB M880s yesterday. Waiting until taper week to start using them.

Any of you not like rest days? I'm supposed to rest today and tomorrow and I'm missing the "just worked out" feeling.

This really clicked for me about over the summer. In June I switched from four days a week to five, and after the initial adjustment phase I found those recovery runs to be awesome substitutes for days off, and they helped me step my running up a notch. I mention it now because this is the time of year when people make plans for 2012. When you get acclimated to decent distances and have run a marathon or two, it can be a little tricky to find ways to improve. For a lot of people, there's not a lot of low-hanging fruit left at that point since you're already doing regular long runs, tempo runs, etc. Adding volume is good, but you can't do that by just running 20 milers all the time -- you sort of have to add days to give you something to hang that extra mileage on. And more days on means fewer days off, which means you have to make a special point to work in some easy runs. For me, this has been great, and I hope other folks who may be in my same general tier of running will give this a try.

I hate total rest days, and I don't do many of them. I generally run 6 days/week, and sometimes I'll just do one rest day every 11-12 days or so. On the days that I don't run, I usually do yoga, or swim, or play basketball. I seldom take a total rest day.But like Ivan said, some of those runs are just super easy, active recovery runs. No way in hell that I could run long/hard all the time and do that.

Legs just did not feel right yesterday morning after the trip to Wisconsin and a few days with no running...so got out for 3.75 slower miles yesterday.

This morning, met up with gruecd and ran 10 with some of his people. Great meeting him and big thanks to him and his friends for slowing down a bit in the last bit of the run so I did not get lost along the way. Was always easy earlier in the run to spot him in that bright bourbon shirt.

Thanks a lot.

Couldn't tell you anything about pace since I left the Garmin at my parent's house before heading out.

Started by 8 I know and was done about 9:30 so guessing for much of it I was around 9:40ish and then a bit faster on the tail end of the run.

Never felt too bad...even got a few hills in this run. Could not ask for better weather for Wisconsin on New Years Eve.

Thanks again grue...I really appreciate it.

No problem, buddy. Good run, and nice to meet you in person. Your last couple of miles were probably in the 8:30-8:40 range, so you definitely picked up the pace a little bit. I ran 5 beforehand for a total of 15 today at 8:16 average pace. Could've definitely gone faster, but I decided to just hang out and run with some buddies instead. Kinda surprised I felt so good, considering I did a relatively hard 8-miler late yesterday afternoon, and I only got 4 hours of sleep after being out drinking Sapphire martinis until 2 AM. Oh, well.Finished with 45 miles for the week and 2,552 miles for the year, a 6% increase over 2010.Heading to Milwaukee tonight to tear it up with a buddy of mine. Happy New Year's, guys! :suds:

Damn, that's awesome. Great year.
:goodposting: and very cool you guys were able to hook up for a run. I finished off 2011 with a fantastic 6.5mi GA run. Why can't they all feel this amazing? I was floating the whole way. It's like my legs finally woke up. Managed 8:57 at 149. This is right back to where I was when I started tapering in early Nov.

Be safe guys. Happy new year!! :towelwave:

Yeah, my math was a little fuzzy...more like I probably ran the 9:30s for the first part then brought it home with you all, but even that 8:30-8:40 did not feel bad at all today.Forgot the tights though, so my johnson is just now thawed again.

Happy New Year everyone!

Figured I'd get my baseline for 5k this morning, 20:56. Not bad but my short term goal is to break 20 minutes. I'll be pushing speed work over the next couple months. Any tips would be appreciated, I've had good endurance training plans before but it's been a long time since I've concentrated on dropping my 5k time.

Happy New Year to everyone...up early enough today and got a little 3 miles in some fresh snow this morning.

Next few days will be interesting as we head back to Tennessee and start the year with me home with the kids.

Hopefully get a light run in Tuesday before I start up my new schedule running Wednesday during the day.

Rang in the new year with a hung over 12 miler. I had scheduled 15, but about 5mi in I just didn't have it in me. I went to my hilly route which didn't help matters. Glad I got 12 in, but I just didn't have it in me to keep grinding so I tucked tail and went home after 12. :bag:

Happy new year all!

2 hours of riding yesterday and 2 hours today. Today was a 1 hour ride with my 12 year old - he had a great time. Then a good 205w avg. effort solo. Even did a 15 minute medicinal walk/run and the calf felt good. So hopefully back on that horse, as well.

2500yds in the pool and some more light running on tap tomorrow.

Bump for this. Anyone else? I've been using them for like 3-4 months now.

I don't think any of the regulars are into the minimalist, but I could be wrong.

Reflecting back on 2011, I can't believe the year I had. So many amazing and wacky adventures I don't know how I'll be able to top it. I love looking at numbers, so here goes a 'by the numbers' look at my year...

227 runs

9 races

6 PRs (4 of these were consecutive 5K PRs in 3 months :loco: 22:54 -> 22:17 -> 21:46 -> 21:21)

1,731.3 miles

272 hours, 38 minutes

5.5 pairs of shoes (I wish I could get 500mi/pair like others can)

Happy New Year everyone.

Training has been interesting here. Last week I had buddies in for a quail hunt so I'll conhsider those days super slow long runs. Saturday I set a new duration pr at 4h and 32m. Covered a 16.3m out and back with 3050 ft of climbing over the most technical single track I've run. Most of the miles were in the 15min to 16min range. I was actually slower on the downhill parts. Beautiful lang range views, creek crossings, boulder fields, steps, ladders, etc. Sore as heck right now so I'll probably take a second rest day.

 Good start to the year.I haven't done anything today but a 2k swim. Did manage to get a 500yd effort down to 7:12 in the drag suit, which is a big improvement over what I have been doing (7:32-->7:19-->7:12 in the last week). Fitness is coming back pretty well. Hopefully end the vacation with a hard trainer session.

I've been running in Kinvaras for the past 6 months. Not sure if they're a true minimalist shoe but I like 'em.

Hey, all! Happy New Year.

I'm back at work, which means I'll now resume my regular posting schedule.

Hope everyone had happy and healthy holidays. Mine were certainly happy, but that so often seems to occur in opposition to health. Man, did I pig out. Definitely gained 4+ pounds. At least I had a good week of running last week - got in 34 miles, which included a couple of great runs around the reservoir next to Boston College while visiting my mother-in-law. I also ran 12 on Sunday - my longest run since the marathon, at 8:19 pace. Though I ran it on a hillier course than usual and that had me working pretty hard. I was definitely feeling it this morning, and cut my planned 6 miles a couple short.

Next up for me is deciding whether to attempt a May 20 marathon or not. If I do, it means starting an 18-week training cycle two weeks from today. I'm going to ramp things up to 40 mpw between now and then and see what I feel like. On the one hand, I love the idea of starting a new cycle to build on the really good shape I'm in right now. But on the other, I just don't know if I can muster the time/enthusiasm for another marathon right now.

After my attempt at setting PRs in the 5K and 10K on the same race day, I ended up falling off the wagon a bit. I hurt my hip and had a hard time recovering. My personal trainer also quit (the second in two months), and work got a bit hectic.

I started back up again over the holidays, but I've lost a bit of fitness. I did nine miles on New Years Eve, but it was incredibly slow and far harder than I expected. Spinning sessions have also been real struggles.

Yesterday, I finally had a workout that felt like I've turned the corner. I did treadmill intervals (2 minutes at 9 min/mile pace, 1 minute at 6:30 pace) for 45 minutes. My wife signed me up for the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, so I have to get some mojo back. I'd really like to do it under 80 minutes (I did it in 100 minutes in 2001, which was very disappointing).

My mind may change down the road, but right now I don't intend to do any races this year. I think I'll just devote the year to base training, running for enjoyment, and getting my leg muscles back in balance. I'll look at 5k/10ks in 2013.

My last race was a HM in May 2007. Man hard to believe its been that long.

I know what you mean. I say do it only if you're really wanting it. It takes so much dedication to do an 18 week cycle that I think you need to be 150% committed at the start. I can't see forcing the issue.

Ended my year with a 15 mile run just south of Nashville in Franklin, TN. I actually did 11 outside and 4 on the treadmill in the hotel. The hills, ohhhhhhhhhh. :o

I thought I handled them all pretty well, pace of 10:47 and avg HR of 140 (for 11 miles). I decided I could end up doing more harm than good if I went too far on the hilly course, but I felt pretty good the next day.

If you had asked me if I run on hills at home I would have said yes. I won't say yes anymore. We have short little spurts of slight elevation change...we don't have hills.

I have a Half this weekend here in the hometown. I'm really looking forward to it. Its a course I'm really familiar with.

Just one question this time. Do I run this one balls out, or do I stick to marathon pace (10:00-10:20) since this is technically part of the Higdon plan. I want to get this one in under 2 hours, but since the overall goal here is a Full in March I don't want to over do it and screw up the whole plan.

Thanks for any input.

Race it like you want for the half.I don't think it will hurt your overall goal for completing a full.

Ended my year with a 15 mile run just south of Nashville in Franklin, TN. I actually did 11 outside and 4 on the treadmill in the hotel. The hills, ohhhhhhhhhh. :o I thought I handled them all pretty well, pace of 10:47 and avg HR of 140 (for 11 miles). Race it and adjust your next few days post-race for recovery. Then just pick up where you left off on the schedule next week.

Happy New Year everybody!

I've had a little bit too much rest last few days. We had a lot of house organization projects so I guess taking down Christmas lights and building storage cabinets isn't total rest - but I haven't done much running. I did do a very hard 15K run on Sunday, but that's it since last Thurs. Going out on a 4x1600 today. Need to work extra hard this week. Last big run (15 miler) coming on Sat. HM race is less than 3 weeks away!
