Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

Assuming your 5K pace is at or a little more than 7:00, than that looks good. If you're walking the rests, I'd cut the rest time in half. Look at what that 2:01 rest did to your HR for the 4th interval. You want to keep the HR up higher to get the desired effect. Now that you got your feet wet, I'd shoot for 6-8 repeats the next time.
Yeah, I didn't intend to walk that long. I did find it odd my HR decreased with each one. Based on that little info, are you saying my 5k pace should be 7:00ish? Or does interval pace usually translate into 5k pace? I actually really enjoyed this run, its a nice change of pace. side note: active.com refunded my money. Kinda shady thing to do, but was simple to get the refund.
If you don't know your current 5K pace, I'd be careful basing it on a few intervals. Just go out in Sand fashion and find out what ya got. I posted this a while back, but here's a typical 5K:0-0.5: Woohoo I'm flyin' this is fun! :excited: 0.5-1: OK this might be a little too fast. :unsure:1-2: Alright this hurts. Don't fade...Don't fade. :football: 2-3.1: Ugh this ####### hurts! Don't let that 14yr old out sprint me. :X

I'm curious why you say this.
I guess in theory it could. A properly run 5k race will be uncomfortable most of the way, but a relatively balanced effort. You just won't have the juice in your body to eek out those last few heartbeats. We always say we're sprinting the last part, but it's not our best sprint unless we've sandbagged the rest of the rest.I think you would be more likely to get there running a shorter time period and then mashing it at the end. Sprint effort, arms pumping too.eta: Although I never done this during VO2 max testing / lacate threshold testing all the way to max hr, the protocol is to increase the effort every 30 or 60 seconds.
Interesting. I'm gonna have to pony up the $ and go get tested, because I have a hard time understanding how a 5K wouldn't milk out your max. I've tried the 'at home' HR max tests and can't get anywhere close to the max I hit at the end of a good 5K. I don't think there's anything "balanced" about a 5K. I think if you're feeling balanced, you're holding back too much.
By balanced, I meant not holding anything back. That means you shouldn't be seeing a big negative split and you should have taxed your body enough at the beginning that it's not capable of maximal effort at the end.If you ran your 5k at 90/94/98% of your best one mile pace I could see where a max hr might be possible. I thought the ideal 5k goal would be more along the lines of 95/95/95% of your best one mile pace.Personally I think getting tested once is money well spent. You can get the hr zones nailed down perfectly. They will also tell you what your carb/fat burn rate is at different hrs and where you need to train at to improve the fat burn. You'll also get a hr number where you cross the lacate threshold. That's a very good number to have as you want to stay below that in longer events.I've done one 26.2 mile event and one 40 mile event and felt stronger in the second half of both. I think my key to success has been training at a pace that I've taught my body to use fat over carbs. This decreases your need for fuel during an event which can prevent digestive issues. I believe the biggest reason more people can't jump right into a marathon isn't the physical part as much as they run on of fuel. A high carb burner stands no chance becuase the carbs will be used up and your body can only replace 250-300 calories per hour. For lighter people that might not be a huge issue, but for heavier people who burn a ton of carbs, it is.

tri-man- i ran through some of those nature preserves in Shorewood this week. Rumor has it those woods are a hot bed of homosexual activity.
lol ...a good excuse to keep running. When I talk about running with a light step, that's not what I have in mind!Ned: I neglected to mention earlier - excellent work on those 800m's that you inserted in your run. Nice speed!

I need a combo of Coach and Dr. Sand. Got the speeedwork bug from all the chatter here and worked in some of those 50s on the :XX thingys last night. I did a 50 yard warm up and then did 9 sets on the :45s. I then did a 750 and 2 500s, keeping the average below a minute per 50 for all, the first 500 was around 9:10. I typically swim between 2,000 and 2,500 yards a day 2 days a week with little soreness. Today, my abs (which I have been hiding nicely lately :porked: ) are killing me. What caused this, do you think? I am thinking I must have been kicking a lot more aggressively than usual, as I use a limited, rudder like, tri kick most of the time. Or, would a more aggressive pull had caused the pain. Anything you can think of that I may have botched technique-wise? I am also wondering if it may have been the cumulative effect of my last few days and not just the swimming. Did a 5K Sunday, swam 2,000 (very hungover) Monday, ran 5.5 Tuesday and hen the swim yesterday. I am generally achy, this is more than just achy, more like a 6 or 7 on the 1 to 10 scale when the doc asks.

Probably a combo, but when you swim with the intention of really hitting it hard you tend to stretch out and work the abs harder than you might realize. I'd say you are just paying for a high intensity workout, particularly since you were working them hard with the running anyway.I worry about sharp located pains. Diffuse achy pains = two aspirin and a can of HTFU. (That said get a good night's sleep and recover a bit).

I always tell people a 5K is tougher than a half marathon. It's torture.I've got a regular 5K coming up and I'm going to try the "go-all-out-and-hang-on" method instead of my usual method which is to go for negative splits.

Update for Coach Sand

50 yd backstroke warmup

750 yd 14:40

rest

10 x 50 yd w/ 10 sec rest. Started of a 48s and quickly degraded to a consistant 55-56 sec

rest

250 yd 4:44 (beat last nite's 4:45 :boxing: )

Regardless of distance it seems like I do the first 100 in 1:45 and then swim consistant 59-60s laps.

Questions

1) Prioritize - turnover or power?

2) Long reach with a stretch to narrow profile?

3) I tend to swim with only slightly bent arms. Today I tried really bending them in. Much further than you typically see, almost like doing a triceps pull down. My body really liked this and my shoulders didn't wear down.

Thunderstorms making me either run a bit later in the dark tonight...or on the TM if it does not stop this crap.

Daughter's spring break is putting a damper on my weekday runs.

So you are saying I should do more and it'll hurt less the more I do, got it. :football:

Today I did 6 miles avg pace 10:34, avg HR 164 I then did about 1.5 mile walk/jog home.

It was about 84 out today so pretty sweaty.

When you guys talk about being tested for HR and lactate threshold where do you do that?

What kind of cost are we talking?

As you can see my HR is way higher then most in here.

I had a big fat bag of nothing today. Legs felt like lead. I covered 2/3 the distance that I planned to cover in the same amount of time. I figured that pushing through it for 35 minutes was better than shutting it down. I'm hoping that the heat/humidity from the afternoon runs is one cause of feeling so worn out this week and that the 8 a.m. start time for the 10K next Sunday will provide a temperature relief.

Whatever makes you smooth. For me it is typically a bit more turnover rather than power. For you it may be pulling a bit harder. Do some work to try to figure this out - it is pretty individual.
2) Long reach with a stretch to narrow profile?
Yes. You want to reach in front of you at 11 and 1 o'clock (i.e. straight out in front of you) to the point that you can. That is highly individual depending on how flexible you are in the shoulders. Don't reach so far that you begin to bend at the spine or your elbow drops - you can stretch too far and have issues there.

Hard to know exactly what you're trying to describe here, but I think I get it. The catch and the pull are one of the big keys to getting faster. Pulling down on the water is slower and really hard on the shoulders. You want to direct as much propulsion back as you can get. I work on this all the time. Watch Phelps here. High elbow. Early vertical forearm. Awesome pull. Watch

and pay close attention to the second drill. Great, great advice and drill there. I do that drill every single practice.

Pretty much. Just make sure you didn't actually pull something and it is just general "WTF did I do to deserve this" soreness.

$100 bucks here. They have the equipment at our bike studio. Pretty expensive, but really clears up alot of questions. Alternatively you can get there by trail and error and research. Any idea what your max hr is pros?

Anybody have any advice/experience re: stress fractures? Was just diagnosed with one -- doc says no running for about 10 weeks. No cast or anything needed and injury didn't show up on an xray.

I'm pretty sure its a result of running on bad/old shoes. I run between 15-20 miles a week.

Just an easy 4-miler for me this morning. My buddy and I will hit the road around 1:00 this afternoon for the Twin Cities. Pizza, a couple of beers, and some basketball tonight, and then we race tomorrow morning at 8:00.

Forecast says 59° and 93% humidity at the start. Definitely warmer than what I'd expect for mid-March in Minnesota, and at least 10-15 degrees warmer than ideal. Oh, well. Control what you can, I guess.

Have a great weekend, guys!

Grue and the other racers - Good luck this weekend. It is supposed to be decently hot here on Sunday. Not welcome, but like you said, what can you do.

---------------

Did a couple of miles a lunch today. Probably went a bit faster than I should have, but just kind of went with it. Do a few more tomorrow to get ready for Sunday. 7:45 start time so i get to sleep in a bit.

Have a great weekend.

Aqua Jogging is a good solution...maybe a road bike as well.

Speaking from complete ignorance - how does one say you have a fracture when there isn't one evident in an x-ray?(I have no advice to offer, sorry).

Had a good 11mi MLR for lunch today. My HR is on a steady decline. It's almost too good to be true. 9:26/146

I was updating the FBG Race Calendar and saw we have a cheater on our hands. :cough:shonuff:cough: I know the pressure around here is heavy to keep PR'ing every race, but riding a bike at your next HM?

Can I just say how jealous I am of the guys that can run during their lunch breaks...

How do you pull that off? 2 hour lunches plus a shower on site? I don't get how this is done!

I'm extremely lucky in that I permanently work from home and have the freedom to take long lunches as long as I don't have any client calls coming. If I were in the office, I wouldn't be able to do this crap either.

Ahh, I didn't take into account the "work from home" scenario. I sit here for a freaking hour doing nothing during lunch. It drive me crazy. All my stay at home work friends are cross fitters. They take that stuff way too seriously.

I am lucky enough to have a craptastic boss that does not notice if I am at my desk or not so I can get out and do my runs mid day without issue. We have a workout facility in our building which is great. Only $50 for the whole year and it helps to be able to get out and get that midday stress release.

The best I can tell is 191. I came up with that on my own by running to near death. I also checked it when I first wake up and the resting is 50.

Stumbled on to this list when I was reading a local trail club site. Thought some of these were pretty good.

You are likely a runner if...

acronyms like PR and DNF are verbs.

the thought of signing up for a 401K is scary.

your blood pressure is 92 over 56 and you are conscious.

you drive 100 miles to a 5K race.

you can convert kilometers to miles in your head.

your iPod has a “running” playlist.

you check out road races while on vacation.

you’ve converted your marathon medals into a wind chime.

you consider running 3 miles to be a warm up.

you know the shoe store guy better than some relatives.

you drive down the freeway and think to yourself, “Hey, my car is doing 1-minute miles.”

you know that PR stands for something other than Puerto Rico.

you use your bib numbers to wallpaper your garage.

your resting heart rate is too low to give blood.

you look forward to birthdays when your age changes to a number ending with a 0 or 5.

you consider your latest race shirt “formal wear.”

you mentally measure junk food in miles rather than calories.

you have your own name for all the local public trails.

I did 2 miles at 10:37 with avg HR 159. It was 86 out already

I am hoping to get up early tomorrow for a long run of 10-13 miles

Good luck to Grue and all the other racers this weekend.

My Garmin 305 wont power up. I used it today, then charged it. I was going to put in a 13 mile run for tomorrow and I cant turn it on. I am going to google for help but I thought maybe someone here may know.

I am doing my best to stay, calm cool and collected but I am close to freaking out.

I found help here https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=9675Just in case anyone needs it in the future. I tried the soft reset which did not work. I went to the hard reset which seems to have fixed it. When I did that reset I got a prompt asking if I really wanted to delete everything. I said no and it seems to be ok. I will find out tomorrow. Holy crap what a scare. I am really dependent on this thing.

I had to do that a couple of times with mine. For the most part, that hard reset would fix anything. I only had to replace mine when it would not hold a charge for too long.

Finally got out for a run this week...after the foot pain and just trying to work around schedules.

A very hot 4 miler. HR got way too high with the heat and not having run much this week.

Took it easy...but it all felt fine.

Hoping to get out for 7 or so on Sunday and back into some sort of scheduled training by Monday or Tuesday to tune myself up for a 5k and then another half at the end of April.

Ouch. Had time this a.m., so went for a long run on a nearby dirt trail along a river ...flat; quite dry. I was enjoying it, so ended up doing 16 miles. But I hadn't brought gels or drinks with me. One water fountain near the trail was working, so I did have two water stops. But with temps around 70 ...not enough. A nice long run, but oof, I was wiped afterwards.

Horrible day for me.

I got the dreaded 2:00 am phone call from my 17 year old son. He fell asleep driving home from work and messed up the van. Thankfully he was fine but he rolled into the drive way with a palo verde sticking out of the grill. It went through the radiator, air conditioner, and fans. He also drove it home after that. We are a one vehicle family and I work 45 mins away. I spent the day removing all the damaged parts and ordered them. I had to rent a car. Financially this is killing me. I am very thankful he is ok but at the same time I want to kill him. I dont even know if the van will run when I put all the new parts on. So far it is up to over $500.00 in parts.

I could not sleep after the phone call so I have been up since 2:00am. I almost went for the run at 3:00am but I was nauseous with anxiety over the whole thing so I ended up taking batting practice with MLB 12 The Show on PS3.

Tomorrow is a new day.

That sucks - kids are expensive.---

Had a great ride today. 47 miles, 2,700 ft. of climbing (so pretty flat). Ended up finishing with a group of three way out front of the rest. Crushed the souls of the group I was in up Cemetary Hill (long, straight 5-6% climb for a couple miles). Even better I was not completely wiped at the end, unlike last week. My body is remembering that I can ride a bike - always a good thing.

I run up to 4-5 miles at lunch (nothing like the 11 miler above) once or twice a week. We have a gym on site and if I'm going to be available via BlackBerry on Saturday and Sunday than the random 90 minute lunch isn't a problem.

Same here. I find I can get in a five mile run at lunch a couple times a week. A 40 minute run leaves just enough time to hit the showers, cool off, and woof down a lunch.

Had same exact issue with a my 305.Here is a link that goes a little deeper if the resets do not work

My link

It appears mine may be more of a hardware issue, when i press on the watch to the cradle is charges.

Seems as if the pins are not connecting properly.

May have to buy a new cradle, hopefully that is it, if it is the pins on the watch might be a tough fix.

Horrible day for me.I got the dreaded 2:00 am phone call from my 17 year old son. So far it is up to over $500.00 in parts.I could not sleep after the phone call so I have been up since 2:00am. I almost went for the run at 3:00am but I was nauseous with anxiety over the whole thing so I ended up taking batting practice with MLB 12 The Show on PS3. Tomorrow is a new day.
ugh, tough one man, hopefully a good lesson can be learned from the experience.

MON-OFF

TUE-OFF

WED-3mi

Was a bit hectic, ended up running around at 8PM in my neighborhood for the 1st time. Love the gps. I can run with no specific direction whatever, and just check to see where I am at.

THU-3.5mi (2.5tempo)

Felt better then previous tempo. Using my gps, I was able to track my speed easier.

Started .5 at a 9.55ish pace, then went to 8.45ish pace. Wanted to warm down the last .5, but i decided to take a scenic trail along a lake that is quite rocky, figured i could do that slower, I ended up keeping same pace.

FRI-OFF

Sat-6.2(59.24)

My big warm up before my 10k next week. Was supposed to to 6, but couldn't resist not doing the last .2

This felt really good.

Last week I did 5 miles, yesterday at the 5mile marker I was 2min ahead pace.

Today I have 3miles to do at some point.

My legs are pretty sore. 6.2 is longest ever for me.

Oh,

Anyone have any experience with joints cracking... A LOT

Knee, ankle and achilles.

When it is bad, it sounds like a crackling campfire.

Yesterday didn't sound so bad, but I did notice cracking every 2-3 steps.

There is no pain at all, just kinda annoying. I am getting self conscious that people are hearing me coming from a mile away.

Any thoughts?
