Ran a 10k in June (7 Viewers)

Set out to do 5 fairly easy today and ended up cutting it short at 4.5 / 8:33. Started getting some pain on outside of right knee (and below knee) around 4 miles. Had pretty much the same issue in my last run again right around mile 4. Iced my knee for a bit and it is still moderately sore. Seems like this is probably my ITB? If so should I scale things back for a bit? Foam roller? Is there a specific kind?
Hit the itb stratches hard and it will be gone in a week. Roller treats, stretches fix.

:goodposting: Also go get a massage (deep tissue) and tell the MT that you're having some ITB soreness. They'll pinpoint the massage better than a roller would (not that a roller is bad or anything).Good ITB article

thanks BNB and Ned. I'm going to head out and pick up a roller. I'll try some of those stretches in the office today.

So this was kinda a last minute thing.

There was a 5k last night near my job at 7:00PM

I decided to go.

My co worker was going, I got my cousin to go as well.

Pretty cool event, well organized, running through nice town.

One of those nice events with music, food, chicks, giveaway, promotion and more chicks.

Weather, Ned loves to joke I have amazing weather for all my races. Today was no different.

Was hot, humid, hazy 80+ all day, come race time, we had a storm few hours early, cool things a bit, ugly clouds with wind at race time, sun was gone, humidity hardly there..pertty much perfect weather...was actually hoping for a storm.

Rain + women + spandex :moneybag:

I went in with basically just trying to keep up early speed as best as possible, and really leave nothing on the course. Previous races I would coast through the finish line...today I was prepared to just look like an out of control nut job last .1

Long 4 lane road we all start on, I am about 4-5 rows deep.

Love it that they announce...if you can not run a 6m mile, please do NOT line up in the front, you will get run over.

We take off, I jump in and out, try to find good openings, not too hard to do with wide roads.

Have good speed early on, feeling good, almost feeling like I am going too fast and will burn out, but nice girl with nice ### in front of me, so I can't fall back!

mile 1 7:12

Feeling it a bit, some hard breathing, a bit of dry mouth, i pass water station, figure will hit it later. Saw a cute girl on side of road with like 5 kids screaming and cheering so i had to break from the pack and go give them all hi fives (the kids) they were all excited. poor kids thought they hi fived some athlete or something, but hey, they loved it.

mile 2 8.02

Felt hard at some points, saw more people pass me then i was passing, no biggie, still felt good. Was worried, there was no water station at mile 2. I needed my water to wet my hair for the finish line photos...luckily t

Finish line was here, I'm ready for my all out leave it on the course...then I see it, a freaking hill, WTF, who put that there!

Well, I took off anyway, passed several people as I sped off to the finish line.

Clocked in at 24.09 with a new PR by 10 seconds

ETA:

84/339 overall

and 3rd in my age group again. I was eating and near loud music so no clue if i got a prize again.

10k tomorrow. My goal originally was 39:59 but I'm just not feeling it. I guess I'll be ok with anything under 42:00. I'm just not sure I'm mentally ready to push myself hard enough to get under 40 minutes yet.

Yes, I'm a poosay. :(

Dude. 10K is probably the worst distance there is. Hurts sooooooo bad. I've broken 40 minutes once, and I'm not sure if I care if I ever do it again. I've got one on 6/9, so we'll see.

Temps are coming down for my marathon on Sunday. Looks like we'll be in the low to mid 70's so I'm thinking we are safe.

My training has been sporadic so I'm thinking a 3:45-3:50 marathon is probably in store. I'll probably go out about 3:38-3:40 marathon pace to begin and see how I feel.

I'll post tracking info on Saturday for anyone who wants to "run" with me.

c numb - nice PR! I love the accidental medal ..again.

Steel Curtain - run a strong marathon!! Do well.

Hang 10 - sometimes when I feel the worst is when I race strong. Hopefully the sound of the gun will send you off on a great race.

I have my 10 miler in the a.m. with Wraith ..a big race based from Chicago's Soldier Field. Hard to tell what the weather will do. We're supposed to have some storms tonight and/or tomorrow. Hopefully that means overcast, but not heavy rain. It's a 7:00 a.m. start, so we'll avoid some of the heat that might occur. My target is to get my pace down to around 7:05/mile and let the HR climb a little higher than my recent long races (so a sub-1:11 race).

Is this sponsored by PSL?

The Protein Boost 4-Mile Burst (nut, mile, repeat 3 times - assistance allowed)Best known effort: rumored to be 53 minutes
Sponsored by me...no. Endorsed... :lmao: re: Protein Boost! No offense to the ladies in my life, but I'd likely be quicker without assistance
You notice that most of our tris have swim temps above what they shut down northern run events.
 Texas IM last weekend had the temp's in high 80's for winners, and 90's for vast majority.

Good luck Steel!____________________________My update:I spent most of yesterday getting a new car, so I only had time for one workout. I did P90x Back and Legs. I'll make up for it today. This morning I did Ab Ripper X; I'll do 1,600 in the pool this afternoon, and Drunk Crossfit tonight (= every Friday we chug a beer between every set :banned: . I pretty much consider this my new sport as it combines 2 of my passions ( :boxing: + :banned: ).

:jealous: Have a blast!!!

Days like today motivate the #### out of me. Hazy, hot, humid and I felt really strong. Had some HR drift at the end, but that's expected when it's sunny 80 and 75% humidity. 8mi GA @ 9:00/157. That's almost the exact pace and HR I was holding in the cooler spring weather.

I hear ya. I think my most recent 5k is whats discouraged me. I ran a pretty decent time but my God did it suck... I'm not so sure I care enough about breaking 40 to do what I need to do.

Is that your secret weapon? :bye:

So how hot is too hot to run?
That's a loaded question... Depends on:individual's fitness level? an overweight novice won't handle the heat the same as a seasoned marathoner.what they're acclimated to? someone used to running in the 50's won't handle the 80s as well as someone who's trained in the 80's for months.how long is the run? obviously a 3mi run won't be as dangerous as a 20mi run.is the sun out? everyone loves to talk about the temps, but the sun exposure can make or break you.is it humid? humidity is the #1 killer, IMO. Look at that WBGT calc. Humidity accounts for 70% of the calc.is there a breeze? even a light breeze will make a big difference since your skin cools by evaporating the sweat on your skin.
Gotcha. Yeah, highs will be in the 90's for us here in FL the next few days. When I ran early last Sunday morning, it had to be about 70 degrees already at like 6:30.

 I hear ya man. It hurts like a mother.... Squeezing every last drop out of these faster races takes a ton, no doubt.

Do your thing and remember to keep it fun.

After not posting in this thread for probably 2 years (old job blocked FBG, barely had time to cruise football and baseball forums) I want to use you guys as a measure for my training again. This week

Monday 6 miles - 45 mins

Wednesday 5 miles - 35 mins

Thursday 4 miles - 27 mins

Today is a hill-sprint workout, whenever I reach a steep incline sprint to the top, walk briefly to catch my breath, then jog to next hill. 2 miles straight uphill total then turn around and race back down. I time myself on the way back down, got it done in just over 13 mins last time, shooting for just under this time.

Ultimate goal - 10k in under 40 mins, did a 5 miler in 31:30 Thanksgiving so I think it's doable.

signed up for a 10k on 7/4. you guys are scaring me :poosay

good luck to everyone racing this weekend - Hang 10, tri-man, Steel Curtain, Wraith

I took my dog running this morning, at mile 3 her tongue started turning a purplish blue so I black flagged her.

Her pacing is really bad, first mile she dragged me a bit, second she stayed with me pretty good, mile 3 it probably looked pretty inhumane the way I kept jerking her along.

Everyone have a great weekend, especially the racers!

She obviously needs her own HR monitor. Ned can advise on the best way to do this. Mac: Welcome back!!!!!!!

 Congrats on the head-to-head victory! Whenever I see someone running with their dog, I always find it fun to speculate on who could outlast the other. I usually side with the dog.

Oh I crushed her. She might could beat me in a 800 yd sprint, but much past that she's gassed. :boxing: PSL: That was actually the first thing I thought about, it had to have been 200+ easy. I'll get a reading on her next time.

I like the hill work ...and the goals! Welcome back.

I did 4 miles today with 3 miles at 9:31.

Tomorrow I have 10 miles scheduled. Good luck to all the racers this week end.

Got back out there tonight and humidity sucks.

Though, the run went well. Was still 80 when I got done about 20 minutes ago.

6 miles @ 10:11 average.

Nice and easy...HR crept up a few times on some hills where I tried dialing it back some...then towards the end of the run (again back uphill towards my house).

Will get out again tomorrow, then its cabin time and fishing the Caney Fork for a few days with some friends for a buddy's 40th birthday. Hot tub on the deck, beer and poker at night.

Yesterday was the maiden voyage for my kayak addition to my multi-sport vice. I can see that this will be stealing time from swim/bike/run all summer. I did just shy of 5 miles and was surprised at the MM speed and how dang sore I am today. My average MM for the first 3 miles was under 15 MM, with lots of pauses. With practice, I'd think I can get race speeds down to around 12 MM depending on the conditions. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos to learn proper stroke technique (like I did when I learned to swim) and it paid off. One of the videos recommended "training" by using no arms and cranking with the chest and torso. Using this I was flying, but could not sustain the stroke for more than about 200 yards. Adding the arms added more speed, but also caused the boat to drift a lot. My route followed the shoreline of Lake St Clair south from the St. Clair Shores border. Just south of the Edsel Ford Estate there is a shallow, sandy area where tons of boats drop anchor and it becomes a big floating party (typically comprised of 50 year fat guys with about 10 twenty something women). There were only about 25 boats yesterday, but still plenty to look at. I am plannning on going back out on Monday (when temps are going to be back in the 90s) when there should be 100s of boats out there.

Question about kayak etiquette if anyone knows. I passed a bunch of other kayakers. It appeared that a couple were giving me some kind of wave by holding their paddle at their chest and one raised it above his head. Is this some kind of common practice or was I just seeing something that wasn't there?

pretty sure that was a kayak gang sign.videos of stroking techiques? i learned on my own as a teeneager. thought that was fairly common??sounds pretty cool, working some new muscles, good luck!

Ugh! I think my Garmin 305 that I've had since late 2008 just bit the dust. It won't turn on or charge at all. I was sensing it was on its last legs but this is bad timing. I don't keep up on the new ones. What should I buy? The 610? I use it for running only.

As for me, ran around 8 miles at a pace that was probably too fast. Felt fine. I'll probably just stick to recovery runs from here on out.

:grad: You don't know me very well, do you? All part of my over thinker DNA. I know it seems  but it actually makes things more enjoyable for all training aspects. I'm sure I could have figured things out on my own, but I'd like to go for AG hardware in the two multi-sport kayak events I'm registered for. Next up is learning the lean turn to cut the buoys during races. I didn't feel like trying it yesterday and dumping the boat in the process. I am also heading to ****'s in a few to pick up some gloves. I blistered my hands pretty good.

:whoosh: Not sure his question was a serious one if you read how he learned his "stroking" techniques.

mine died a few months ago as well. i just attached it to the charger and a couple days later it fired up on its own and no problems since. weird. try it.

Ugh! I think my Garmin 305 that I've had since late 2008 just bit the dust. It won't turn on or charge at all. I was sensing it was on its last legs but this is bad timing. I don't keep up on the new ones. What should I buy? The 610? I use it for running only.As for me, ran around 8 miles at a pace that was probably too fast. Felt fine. I'll probably just stick to recovery runs from here on out.

OK, I have it doing that now, actually. (Of course, sometimes it's also nice to have an excuse to go out and buy the newest and greatest!)

I've had the Motorola MOTOACTV for a few weeks now and love this thing. Its a huge jump in technology from the 305 (which I used for the past 2 years). It will pair with your garmin HR strap, so no need to go buy a new one.

Think I'm concussed. :X

Some of you know I came from racing Enduros. Since picking up this marathon habit, I haven't touched the bike in two years. My nephew was over and begged me to take him back to our old section of trails for a few laps on his bike. I couldn't resist so we took both bikes out. It's amazing what running did for my endurance on the bike. Holy crap I was flyin' and felt like I could go forever. This was also after I had already ran a muggy 8 for lunch. :excited:

The excitement came to a screeching halt about an hour in when a stick decided to wedge itself in my front wheel right behind the brake caliper. It was like an instant eject button - right over the bars I went. Conked my head pretty good on the ground. Been fighting headaches ever since. Anyone want to buy an 09 450F?

Got my recovery in at 9:30 this morning to beat the heat. I should've went at 6:30. It's already nasty out there. Hope all the racers stay safe!

Congrats to wraith and Tri on the soldier field run. Looking forward to the RRs.

Is this some kind of common practice or was I just seeing something that wasn't there?
pretty sure that was a kayak gang sign.videos of stroking techiques? i learned on my own as a teeneager. thought that was fairly common??

sounds pretty cool, working some new muscles, good luck!
:bag:

Thanks. I hadn't considered anything but a Garmin but I'll look into that one. Hope the head heals!

Now, all of a sudden it's charging again. Probably a false alarm. I'm blaming the cleaning people that were here yesterday.
