Ran a 10k in June (2 Viewers)

If you don't believe me, then put some money behind that 99%. $10 from me to you if you're one and done, $1000 from you to me if you do another in the next 2 years.
 BTW, BnB, I have tentatively put BS&G on my schedule for next year. Heck, if PSL drives over here he can stop over with me for the night and we can roll up there together.
Awesome. Sign-up is usually in Feb. Unfortunately it opens at mid-night and fills within hours. My place is in Beech Mountain, NC if you want to see how far that is from you. Food and beer on the house for anyone who makes the drive and rides the event.
 230 miles from us. Beautiful area.

Have a question for the group, how do you carry enough hydration for a long run, say 16 miles or so? I'm struggling with carrying all the "stuff" for a run that long. I've got a 20oz Nathan that fits a pack of GU nicely but I really about double that for this distance. I don't really feel like driving the route at 4am to stash a bottle someplace. Any suggestions? Just carry another bottle?
Camelback. My favorite long run at our last place had a gas station at the halfway point, just off the trail. Perfect for refills and the occasional treat.
I always rip up my back when I try to use a camel back. I love them for hiking but not running.

I generally run loops between 5 and 10 miles and refill after each loop. For 16, I'd run either 2 or 3 loops depending on how hot it was.

Yeah, I think you need to make loops, plan a route that passes some water fountains or refill opportunities, or suck it up and get by with 20 oz. If it's hot enough to cause you to need more fluids, then you will likely need to make accomodations to get refills. You could carry an extra 16 oz Gatorade bottle and pitch it when you're done (I buy a case of them from Costco).prosopis - great run! You're setting yourself up for a record breaking winter.

Salomon XT TwinThough, with the heat lately, I still have been looping for runs over 15 miles. Loop back to the house (or the car when on the greenway) to refill one of the bottles.

Though, I do sweat a lot and try to keep on top of my hydration pretty well during long runs.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I like the salmon x-wing Ty fighter thing

Just got back, 15.5 distance PR @ 10:43 pace. Goal was to get a distance PR and try to keep it under 11. Probably one of the most consistent runs I've ever had. Only one mile over 11, everything else was in the 10:30 - 10:50 range, heart rate stayed Steady around 146-147. Some nice hills to challenge and a whole lotta peace.

Proverbs 27:17 thanks guys, lotta inspiration comes from this thread

Great run Beer...

For me...I can't freaking believe I just ran for 3 hours.

Nor that I easily hammered out 18 miles.

Nor that I ran 50 miles this week.

This run was iffy with storms predicted overnight and into the morning.

They came overnight...but it was just cloudy when I got up. Still was about to put it off til tomorrow (73/68 this morning...tomorrow supposed to be about 61/55 in the morning). But I hate doing my long runs on Sundays as it throws off my next week's schedule.

The clouds did keep it pretty cool and there was a breeze when I set out at first light.

First 12 went by easy...averaged around 10:39-10:40 and 145...felt like I had a ton left in me as I stopped by the house to switch to some cold water and add some gatorade.

Also changed to a dry shirt before going out for the final 6.

About a half mile in, I wondered why I changed my shirt as the clouds decided they were tired of carrying that water. Not a downpour, but a nice steady rain.

It felt really good and the temps dropped a bit (68/62 when I finished).

These miles were easy and looking at the whole run I negative split the last 9 miles over the first 9.

The last 6 were at 10:25ish/150 (mainly because one mile in there is quite hilly and my avg shot to 156 over that mile).

Overall 10:34/148 average.

And I felt I easily had 2 more in me if I had the time.

But have to hit the shower and get ready for my son's first soccer game if the weather holds out.

Good luck on the HM, jux!

So even though I will be lucky to get 30 miles in each of these last 2 weeks, I listened to everyone and I'm doing my first half next Sunday.

Ran about 10k today in Stockholm. Very tired from jet lag but running in 58 degrees with no humidity felt great. I'd forgot what it was like to not sweat through my clothes

Looks like your temps are starting to drop. Fantastic run and now you might be able to keep up with the kids at soccer. Good luck with that ;)

I got my 11 in today. 10:17 pace with avg HR at 150. That is a pretty fair improvement on my HR. I do attribute it some what to cooler temps. It was 75 degrees out with 85% humidity when I was out. Big storms around here yesterday. The main road to my place has been closed for 24 hrs now and there was a death nearby. Lady got trapped in her car and drowned, very sad.

People need to be smarter. If the washes are running dont try to cross them. Took me a little extra time to get home but that is ok.

* a bug flew into my eye this morning with some force. Hurt like a mother and is still achey. :hot:

Yeah, was hoping this rain may have postponed the game...not feeling too sore yet...that will come tomorrow Im sure.I won't be moving too quickly on the sidelines today.

Very nice run there.Good to see you hitting those paces and keeping the HR down.I was surprised how well mine held up today over the 2nd half of the run.And yeah, bugs in the eye are a biotch.I about hit a huge spider web the other morning on a run.Was still a bit dark out and if not for a car approaching, I would not have seen the web. Nice sized one too...decent sized wolf spider right in there.I think I hit a bit of one today. Came into the house and as I pulled off my hate I noticed a few strings of web off of it.

beer, sho nuff, and prosopis -- Good runs by all three of you.

_____________

Did 17 today and actually faced the pleasant situation of being able to sleep in because I wanted to wait for it to warm up a little before I got going -- the overnight low was just over 40 and I'd just as soon get some extra sleep and let it creep up into the 50s. I was looking forward to running laps around campus with music, but I found out less than two miles in that my mp3 player was shot; the headphone plug-in is no longer stable so the sound cuts in and out all the time as I'm running. So I had to the rest of the run music-less, which would normally be fine because I do that quite often, but I wasn't in the right frame of mind today and as a result the miles just seemed to drag out.

Same to you man! As I was coming to the end I thought only another 10 miles for a marathon  18/50 is a great accomplishment man, well done!
Awesome  What was your previous distance PR? 15.5 is getting serious :excited:
13.5 I think so not a huge deal but if it was 13.6 I'd be feeling just as good ;) PR is a PR right? Hoping your eye isn't messed up. I keep meaning to post it but I have this arachnophobia thing from my youth and running through spider webs in the dark absolutely creeps me out, did that a ton this week.

Sleeping in because it was too cold  Suck factor made a huge diff for me this morning, was 139 when I started. Still amazed what a huge difference just a small change in temp makes with your performance. Nice job guys

BNB...freaking nuts.

GL on that one and "congrats???"

I can't imagine the time it takes to prepare for that. I don't work and its all I can do to make time some days to put in the runs to prepare for a marathon.

Not sure I will do that more than this one time either.

I think I like the 13.1 distance a bit better to train for.

Umstead 100 - Got In    :o
Sorry to hear that, GB. T&P.
:lmao: Yeah, that's crazy! I want at least 30 miles out of you tomorrow, BnB. Follow that up with a 15 mile recovery run Monday morning at 2:30 a.m.
:lmao: :lmao: I expect nothing less out of you. Certifiable, yet awesome! Friend of mine did a 100 a couple years ago and loved it. If you need advice I can get you in touch.

While everyone is waiting for the important stuff, I did my short tri today with my wife. Weather was pretty bad - 155 or so suck index at 4:30 this morning. Race was a 300yd swim (which was a bit long), 10 mile bike, and 2 mile run. Quick rundown:

Swim: 4:56 - 1st male, 2nd overall. I gave away time by swimming wide of the exit by 30 yards and having to run back.

Bike: 23:23 - 1st overall. 25.1mph. 265w (I was aiming for 270, so really not too bad) Pretty fun being out in front and being the guy escorted by the race moto.

Run: 14:25 - I'll take 7:12s any day of the week and twice...well... today. Still not good enough to win as I got passed by two with a half mile to go.

3rd OA finish out of a few hundred. This was a beginner race, though, so most of the serious competitors there did the long race.

I then rode back to the house - 18 mile, 205w, 22.2mph.

Chicked on the swim, and passed late in the run? What the ..?! 3rd OA is 3rd OA - very, very cool! Great way to end the season!!! :pickle:

She finished 9th AG. Did very well considering her lack of training. Most importantly, she was the the hottest chick on the course.

The girl not only beat me on the swim, she thrashed me. It took me a mile or so to catch her on the bike. Damn 15 year olds.

Well, with the ages of my kids...coaching soccer...he is playing basketball in the winter and my daughter ready to start some other activities...I don't see me having the time for it for a long while.Maybe when they are older it could be a possibility again.

Then again, a year ago I said Id never run a marathon. So its possible...just not likely.

It's not that bad. I'll probably be doing less weekly mileage than most of the guys here doing these 18/70 plans or running six days a week. Really the only difference is more rest days for me and extending the long run a couple of hours which is the same amount of time most of the bike guys are doing on their long rides.I'll put pen and paper together for a plan soon, but I expect it will be 3/4 days running, 1/2 days stairmill for 30 min, and 0/1 day on the bike.

Following the moto was cool, no doubt. The run was a simple out and back. Funny enough on the way back the people on the out leg kept telling me how much gap I had. They guy who passed me was doing sub-6s. Yeah, like I can do anything about that, anyway!

Could have tripped or pants him.

SC - good work. You better run that full 18 today. No excuses! :football:

PSL - Curious about the elliptical, although I think the lack of impact may be a double edged sword (when it comes to translating to running performance). It's amazing how quickly you can lose your gains (P90X)!

beer - Another vote for the amphipod belt. The customization sets it apart from the others, IMO. Congrats on the distance PR! Are you gonna run a marathon or what?

prosopis - PRs are gonna drop like flies for you this fall.

shonuff - Congrats on the 18.

Ivan - 40 degrees? So jealous. Those 'not in the right frame of mind' runs kill me. They really seem to happen on these long Wendesdays for me. Total grind, but these can make/break ya.

BnB - :excited: :excited:

Sand - Congrats to you and your wife! Riding behind the moto had to be a killer rush.

I'm sitting here all geared up and ready to go run 20mi, and I can't leave yet. Major work project going live this weekend and its been a near Cluster F. Woke up at 2am to killer stomach cramps and spent 30mins on the throne. 15mins later I get an emergency call at work and have been up ever since. I'm losing my mind :loco: :loco:

3.1 @ 9:02 today at the Dash for a Splash :excited:
Nice! Your mom still helping to run the event?Sand - fish-like 15 year olds and sub-6 minute runners can't be anticipated. What a great memory for you to reel in the gal early in the bike and then hold the lead into the run.

I'll let the Half-IM guys file their reports ...but we have a podium result coming!!! Way to go, Wraith!!!!!

This was a small, local 5K (we had to stay on sidewalks for much of the last mile). But overall, a nice little event. My daughter enjoys coming along, so it was fun to have her with me.

I knew right away I did not have my high gear as I didn't Sand the start and could tell the legs weren't reaching very well or turning quite quickly enough. Too many distance runs and not enough hard speed work lately? Just tired from a busy summer? -ptts- The HR was very close to earlier 5Ks that were in tougher conditions, so it probably gets back to the training. Anyway, nice to run near the front, and the race director gave a "wow" after announcing my time..something that wouldn't happen in the big CARA races. I'll try again next week at a race right in my neighborhood ...see if this one helped get my legs back under me.

I'll try again next week at a race right in my neighborhood ...see if this one helped get my legs back under me.
90% of us here would be thrilled to have an good day like that much less an off day. Congrats.

Naperville Trails 1/2 Marathon Race Report

The weather was as advertised this morning. High 50s to low 60s. Near ideal conditions and far and away the best for any of the half marathons I've run. It was windy but the course is through a forest preserve about 1/3 of which is in the woods, so the wind wasn't that bad. I was well rested so, all things considered, I thought I have a great chance of breaking my PR of 1:31:18 and even getting under 1:30. I was shooting for 6:50 miles...

Mile 1: 6:32. I decided to wear my heart monitor this time. However, I didn't realize it was as loose as it was! I fidgeted with it for a while but then it slid down to my stomach. I took it off and tossed in under a tree to go back and get later. Oh well!

Mile 2: 6:29. I was going way too fast and was having trouble settling into a pace.

Mile 3: 6:45

Mile 4: 6:42

Mile 5: 6:48

Mile 6: 6:51

Mile 7: 6:54 I started struggling a little here. I got a side stitch for 1/4 mile or so that impacted things.

Mile 8: 6:49

Mile 9: 6:42

Mile 10: 6:45 Around here I was feeling pretty decent. Tiring, of course, but for the miles left and with the time I had banked, I knew I would get my goal. That peace of mind really helped me relax and just see if I could keep the pace.

Mile 11: 6:47

Mile 12: 6:40

Mile 13: 6:43

last .06 :22 (my Garmin was measuring slightly long. Maybe it was the angles I took.)

Overall finish 1:27:46. Overall, 13th out of 600. 2nd out of 63 in my AG (large AG! And the guy who was first won the whole thing!) I also beat all the women.

I've very pleased with the time, of course. A 3:08 marathon and a 1:27ish half have certainly blown away my expectations going into 2012. A nice confidence builder for the Chicago Marthon although I don't think my endurance is where it was this spring.

Avg HR: 173

1st in 55-59 AG (out of ..5)

This was a small, local 5K (we had to stay on sidewalks for much of the last mile). But overall, a nice little event. My daughter enjoys coming along, so it was fun to have her with me.

mile 1: 6:28 ..HR 163

mile 2: 6:42 ..HR 175

mile 3: 6:37 ..HR 180

last .1: 6;25 .HR 183

I knew right away I did not have my high gear as I didn't Sand the start and could tell the legs weren't reaching very well or turning quite quickly enough. Too many distance runs and not enough hard speed work lately? Just tired from a busy summer? -ptts- The HR was very close to earlier 5Ks that were in tougher conditions, so it probably gets back to the training. Sounds like fun. Add me to the list of people who would kill to have this race as a PR.

Thinking about it, it was fun, once I stop obsessing over the time compared to earlier times this year. After about a half-mile, there was a pack of about six runners just in front of me (and more further ahead; I finished 10th). I stayed patient and they began to fall off the pace. Just before the two mile point, two were left in front of me as we turned onto a long straightaway. We had a little back and forth, but then I was able to surge a bit and create a bit of distance. That was the race within the race ..and it was fun!

Wow man, that's just damn impressive Jux! Great job!!
Half Iron Mans are hard. :(
You're gonna need to unpack that a bit GB ;)

No go on the Mt. Mitchell lottery for me. That makes me one for three in these signups and the one was the fourth to last spot. Huge demand for ultra events if someone wants to make some cash. I guess I'll make an attempt at the marathon sign-up and see if I can get wait listed for the challenge.
