Ran a 10k in June (8 Viewers)

Thanks to all in here...for the advice and encouragement.

And a big FU to all of you as well for convincing me I could run this thing. :)

I did 15 miles @ 9:39 pace this morning. Was thinking of Sho nuff and Dan Fouts while running. Hope they are enjoying themselves and doing well.

I now start my taper. I am fairly confident that I am in the minority here but I am gonna say it. I love me a taper week :excited: :banned:

With all the free time you have during your taper week, maybe you could check your PSN message box and respond to some friend requests. Just saying . . .

 Yeah buddy.....go get it.
Will post full race report later but loved this race. A little hilly, very crowded, but GREAT energy. Beat my goal too! Finished in 1:52:48!!
Awesome! Congrats on destroying your goal time!
:goodposting: WOW!!!

Humbled..didn't think I could have any more respect for you all than I already did...but wow.

First half went well...HR monitor went wacky early on though...but mile 16ish brought just a nasty tight/cramping quad. Then calves...then hamy. Would get them loosened up....but just couldn't bear it for long...lots of walking and shuffling down the stretch...but gutted out the last mile.

Will post more....disappointed in the time...but incredibly proud of the accomplishment.

You drink enough water? Gatorade? Do gel packs? Salt?Anyways, congrats on grinding it out. You made it to the finish line and that's all that matters.

and congrats to Fouts...killed it...way to go.

Does jb still post? I think he was supposed to run in the same event I did...but had not heard from him.

Congratulations on finishing your first marathon. The first one is almost always a lot harder than people expect it to be. You deserve to be proud for finishing a tough event and doing something that most people will never come close to.

Awesome job gutting it out man. We all know how tough those last few miles are when you feel like you're on empty. Great accomplishment, every time I run long I think there is no way I could go another 6,7,8 miles to get to 26. Great job regardless of the time, you should be awfully proud. I look in envy at ever 26.2 sticker I see

Me: We're on break, right?

Training:

Me:

Good week, ran a 7:57 mile (PR), got some quality runs in and a distance PR today to finish up (18.5). And at some point next week I'll break 1000 miles for the year.

and congrats to Fouts...killed it...way to go.Does jb still post? I think he was supposed to run in the same event I did...but had not heard from him.
I still lurk here...nothing post worthy unfortunately. I checked in tonight to see how you did. My buddy I was supposed to run it with was gunning for 4:30 and finished 4:58. He said people were dropping like crazy around mile 18.I did drop out...I have a multitude of excuses I could go into. I wouldn't have been ready anyways, but I managed to pull a groin (fortunately mine) in late October. So that's my excuse. I'm set to refocus, about settled into the new job and the new baby is finally sleeping, yada yada. I'll be a regular here again very soon.Congrats on the finish man...wish I could have come.

Dan - Congrats! Looks you're finding yourself as a runner. That's a great time given you just kinda jumped into it.

shonuff - Keep your chin up. 26.2 has gotten the best of all of us at one point or another. Congrats on finishing!

Got out for a good 10 today. I had no plans other than to just run for an hour or so. Just me, the watch, and the road. No extra gear or food. No pressure on keeping certain HR ranges, paces, or any of that BS. Just run and be alive. Ended up doing 10, but felt like I could go forever. It was therapeutic......

Thurs afternoon I got a call that my grandmother had a massive stroke and was put on life support. We rushed up to Lancaster and spent her last few hours with her that night. Our family lost our rock on Friday 3AM. My grandfather is a huge inspiration to me. I was in awe watching him literally stand by her side for over 4hrs without moving an inch. At 86 he's an amazing man. That turkey still rides 500mi bike rides (week long trips). 64 years of marriage...... Really concerned for him now.

Sorry to hear that Ned. Went through a similar situation when my dad passed at 89. He & mom were married for 65+ years.

My favorite Ascic shoes that I have over 450 miles on are shot. This is the second pair I have had. I go to TheDicksSports and buy the exact same model and size. I have ran in them 4-5 times now and they just don`t feel the same. Anyone else ever bought the same shoe and have different results?

Just got back from my first run of December. 3.5 miles.

Spent all of Thanksgiving weekend hiking - averaged 12 miles a day with 35 pounds on my back. Finally feel back to normal.

Condolences to you and yours, Ned.

_______________________________

I ran 13.1 this morning. 7:46 pace. I had planned to run at about 8:00 pace but kept on inadvertently quickening the pace. I was fairly gassed at the end. I'm hoping my endurance comes back soon. I start Boston training in a little over a week.

Nice! Where did you hike?--

Ned - sorry for your loss. Hopefully your family can give your grandfather lots of support.

jb - tough that you couldn't finish the race. Hard to do so when the training gets cut short.

DaGuru - I have not had problems replacing the same model/size of shoe ...weird!

9 miles for me this a.m. (8:24/mile) Still no agenda other than putting in some miles. I had done 150 squats and lunges on Friday and then an easy 4 miles yesterday, so right now, my butt muscles are not too happy with me.

Man that's a great run but I gotta say, you suck. . .hard ;)

Day after marathon...not too bad off (probably with all the walking/shuffling I did not do as much...but still expect more pain to come).

Biggest thing in my right hamstring/knee. Its generally ok once loosened up and walking...but sitting for any amount of time (like the 4 hour car ride home) really tightens up the hammy and knee and makes it fun to stand and start walking again.

Why do you all do this more than once? :)

Maybe its just the early post-marathon feeling after it going like that...but I see myself sticking to half marathons for a while. Maybe one day I get pissed off at how it went and forget the pain of training and the run yesterday and give it another go (if so, Disney in 5 years will be their 25th anniversary of their marathon I believe)...but still not sure I can convince myself or my wife to really want me to do that again.

Halfs just seem right to me. Training is strenuous without being "too much" for me time wise...and the race distance is far more manageable to me.

Reminds me of HS track where I finally settled into the groove of running 400m over things like 800m or 1600m races which I never did that well at.

First off congratulations marathoner. I had a lot of the same feelings and experiences you had with my one and only marathon to date (unless either of my kids want to run one with me, I may never run another). It all seemed like work and the whole thing is really what turned me on to triathlon. I have no doubt I suffer from ADD and I need variety. Now, I try to live by the mantra "if its not fun, its not worth doing". Triathlons, trail races and adding a kayak to the mix are just what I needed. Find your groove and have fun, no one can take away the fact that you ran a marathon.

I don't see me getting into tris (Im an ok swimmer, just don't enjoy it at all). For me I think I just have a "law of diminishing returns" past a certain distance. Sure, I could keep training and putting in all those miles and breakthrough...its possible Im sure if I really put my mind to it and work it. But not sure I want to other than for my own pride. My wife said "I know you" basically when I said that I was happy to have finished but a bit disappointed and would not rule out another shot. She knows Im competitive...not as much against others these days as much as I am with myself.I enjoy running...but there were parts of the training where I thought "what am I doing or why" and got that feeling during the race too.I never got that feeling training for any half or running any of them. (even blowing up in the Country Music one last year...probably because I was running for a cause and enjoying a couple of beers on the course after I knew it was not my day).

As for a race report...I may get to one someday...not sure though.

I will say..it was a very well put on event.

The on-course support was fantastic. Just packing the streets in Memphis around Beale street was a very cool thing.

And so inspiring running through the St. Jude campus with the kids out there and their families. Got a bit dusty out there for sure.

The half part of the course before the split off was very good.

The 2nd half of the course...it was ok, and great as far as scenery...but still some great support. Have heard about marathons and how lonely it gets sometimes after the half marathoners break off...and did not get that feeling. Still great support there and that was big.

The finish in the baseball stadium was very cool...nice area in the outfield grass to stretch out after...only complaint is then you had to walk up steps to get to the food/drink tents and family areas.

Other cool thing...there was a guy in a wheelchair that I passed and he passed me back and forth a few times as I was struggling.

As I jogged the last mile determined to finish strong...I caught up to him as we were entering the stadium...seeing he was struggling just from the length of the race (and this was not one of those specialty racing wheel chairs...it was a guy in a regular looking wheel chair)...anyway...struggling from the distance and the crushed gravel/dirt path of the warning track...I just sort of stopped and slowed and let him have what was a great ovation. Pretty awesome seeing him cross the finish and his family there waiting for him and the support he got from the crowd.

Say what you want about the race & how you finished up but for me, this is what I'll remember about it, class move sho nuff, class move

Nice! Where did you hike?
Zion NP.... did a day hike the first day to a nice campsite, then came out the next morning, and hiked Wildcat Canyon trail to the West Rim trail. Absolutely stunning, but it was mid-20s overnight. My wife did NOT enjoy sleeping in that.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother, Ned.

I got in 11 miles yesterday -- the first couple of miles were slow and easy, and then I gradually picked it up and finished relatively fast. The average pace overall ended up being exactly MP (8:47), but I had miles that were :40 in either direction. Later on today I'll go out for 5 easy miles.

Annapolis Half Marathon race report

Background - last long run was 2010 - Cherry Blossom 10 miler I did with a 9:33 pace.Goal was to get 2013 Cherry Blossom 10 miler in April at 9:00 pace. Been training now since June 2012 with a LOT of help from this board. Been hitting 5k, 10k and recently 8 miler as tuneups with paces from 8:45-9:00 range. Was encouraged by this board to go for this half marathon! Was aiming for 2:00:00.

Conditions - started at the Navy Football stadium at 7am. Foggy, chilly (39). About 2600 total participants. Lots of music, energy, families there. One thing that stood out to me at first glance...not that many "out of shape" people. At the 5k, 10k I've recently run, you see a lot of people that don't look like runners (people that just seem to be starting to run...like me!). I guess at the Half level, I was more intimidated by the "fitness look" of the crowd! I put one some of my pre-race music to keep me from getting discouraged!

Start - Really no corrals. More like "if you are fast stand up front, slow in the back" . I stayed in the middle of the masses. Right out the gate, VERY crowded. Could not even get pace set for first mile!

Miles 2-4 - still trying to get pace set. Took Tri-man's advice to stay "uncomfortably comfortable". Put lots of slower paced music on my playlist to help...Skyfall (Adele), Africa (Toto)...lol....kept it around the 9:20 pace

Miles 4-6 - This is the range I usually feel the best. Legs loosed up, more room to run. Enjoying the scenery...downtown Annapolis is beautiful. Picked pace up into the 8:10 range.

Miles 6-8 - Ok, getting a little tired. Just went through 2 big hills, my right ankle feeling a little tired for some reason. I usually put my "high energy songs here for a boost! Gangam style and Flo-Rida....it works...staying fast, pushing it faster back down those hills to make up time. Running about 8:30 still.

Miles 8-10 - My energy is fading. Grab some gels from the water table. Crowds are great though...LOTS of bystanders everywhere on the course cheering all, lots of cowbells. Who's that cute girl with the sign "Way to go Random Stranger!"...loving it!

Miles 10-13. Trying to stay focused. Pace is slowing into the 9:30 range. My GPS (I use Runtracker on my phone) is screwed...must have lost signal along the way...telling me pace is 4:40...makes me laugh. According to it, I should have been done with 13.1 like 2 minutes ago....feel like I am running blind. But try to rely on training and just my watch at this point!

Last .1 - crowds are huge...everyone at this pace is lagging to the finish. I go sprint mode last .1 and pass like 35 people. Not sure if that is **** move or not, but I love it!!! Finished at 1:52:48 (8:37 pace) and I am excited! Looking for my wife and kids....nowhere to be seen....then they show up like 2 minutes later....they were pretty sure I was going to be at the 2:00:00 mark so they had just walked over from hotel, but missed my ending. I tell them not to worry! I'll take it!

Thanks for all the encouragement on the board!

It's not. Congrats again!
I crave this part of the race. Good RR!
Knocking a few people out of the way makes it better.I've actually never done a large distance event. My race on Saturday has 76 runners. I doubt if I'll have anyone in sight 50% of the time.

The teachable moment is to remember that you almost always have a little more in the tank than you think you do ...so you can try to pick up the pace earlier, knowing the visuals (finish line) and sounds (crowd support) will carry you through to the end. Nice report! Fantastic race!!! :hifive: Successfully running a HM is a big hurdle to clear. I expect as you drop back to shorter races, you'll have a different mentality.

This has always fascinated me and I've learned to really push the envelope with making a move earlier than usual. I really tested this out on my last half and started making moves on racers at the 10mi mark. Making subtle upticks in pace (:05-:10) and seeing who's going to come along for the ride or not is a lot of friggin' fun. It hurts like hell, but man what a blast. Maybe one day I'll be strong enough to do this in a marathon. :adrenalinejunky:

I have to rededicate myself to this thread...way too many new people!

I was going to respond to this too but forgot...Shoes with 450 miles have been used and abused and will not feel the same as a new pair. DaGuru, maybe you just forgot how they felt when they were new?
