You win.Dreading the 30k race I signed up for...ughIt's supposed to rain through the duration of the race and boy, do I feel like #### right now. On antibiotics for a sinus infection and got some tendonitis flaring up from my hips down to my knees. #### I know...I know...
Mitchell and Yancey counties on a 3 hour school delay this AM...that means ice/snow over 3000 feet...that means ice/snow on the last couple of miles of the Toll Rd before the Marathon turnaround...and all snow inside the parkand on the Parkway...The likelihood of running pavement only from the Marathon turnaround to the summit is high...36 miles...but still a summit...More tonight.I didn't get selected to go to the top so I'll be doing 26.2. Looks like 37 degrees and rain to start. Mud on the trails early and creek crossings high. Will transition to ice and then snow as we climb 2500 ft. I'll turnaround there, the 40 milers will have another 1500 ft to climb in snow conditions.I have no idea what to wear or which shoes to breakout. Was shooting for sub five hours, but that will be dependent on the trail conditions. Will have to throttle back the descent if it's icy.For you out of towners...It is 43 degrees and raining in Asheville right now...We are looking at cold rain all night and all day tomorrow for the volunteers that will be heading up to camp for your Toll Rd. aid stations...Snow and ice at the upper elevations is expected for the next 36 hours...

After years of dodging the frozen bullet... Weather update - Freezing rain and sleet at Sourwood Gap (3000 ft) as of 1:30PM today...Toll Rd. aid station crews are headed up for a cold, wet and likely snowy night on the mountain... As of today, there is no change to the Marathon course...The Challenge runners will now be running up the paved State Park Rd to the Summit after the Parkway aid station... As opposed to years past, new regulations being enforced by the Blue Ridge Parkway this year are preventing any race volunteers from traveling on the Blue Ridge Parkway if it is closed to the general public...which it is today...Because the Parkway is the only route available to access the Mount Mitchell Park, this means that volunteers and aid above the Parkway (14 mile mark) will be limited...We are going to have minimal support at the summit, but Challengers need to be prepared for 11 miles (mile markers 15-26) to be very cold, very windy and with little support...A true Challenge this year! There will be fire/rescue support on the Parkway for emergencies...Hand bottles or hydration packs are mandatory...Please refrain from waiting to fill your bottle/bladder up on the course...our volunteers have worked super hard to carry that water up there...Start the race with full bladders and bottles.

----On my end my fifth day in a row running - good for 30 miles. Tired 6 miler at 8:22/mile. Tagged on a swim tonight. Only 1500 yards, but despite being tired it was a better workout than the run. Finished up with a 6:22 500yd TT. Almost the same as last week, which is a nice result. My new swim site captures SWOLF for each set - you'd love it, 2Y. The 500yd swim averaged 28. I still have no clue what to aim for there.Good luck BnB and Hang 10![]()

I think actually walking on water might be the next thing to shoot for. I have only got my SWOLF into the 30s a handful of times. You know you're fast, this confirms your form is rock solid too. Since you were gassed from a week of running, you should try a fresh swim and see if the SWOLF needle moves or if just your time does.'Sand said:'beer 302 said:Good luck BnB and Hang 10![]()

The cervelo was already sold and the other guy hasn't repliedThat's what I'm thinking. I have a Trek 1200 aluminum which I bought used for $250 back in college (1996). Last Tri I went to (HIM Kansas, 2010) people looked at it like it was a novelty and almost extinct. It's time to upgrade. Both are good used prices in my opinion, but the Cervelo would give you a lot more in terms of lighter weight and the components. Heck, you can even take the cleats off the shoes and slap them on your bike shoes if the size isn't right. Mild word of caution. I bought my tri bike used and as I recall a lot of the listings had things like" XXXX miles, no crashes" or "crash-free bike". I am not saying both bikes have been wrecked, but I would look them over very closely before buying. I think the Cervelo owner set himself up to sell that bike for less with his "family situation". I'd go at him with around $900 in cash and see if he bites.Looking for a new tri-bike on Craigslist, curious to get your thoughts.

If I look back at my prior workouts, I expect my SWOLF would be mid-40s.--7 miles today with 5 x 1 mile repeats at sub-7:00 pace. I had thoughts of doing more, but speed work is tough at 25 degrees with a stiff SW wind, and my legs were pretty gassed. I wanted to get in some work at my HM PR pacing, though. 25 yard pool. I think it measures one arm stroke, so I'm hitting 18 sec/25 + 9 or 10 left arm strokes. I think I average about 19 left-right strokes per length. And, yes, 2Y, I'd love to get in a rested swim workout. Sadly that almost never happens as the pool work always ends up after work or after my Saturday ride. In the summer I'll be able to do some early Masters swim stuff. 2 minutes ...so a rather quick turnaround. With the cold and wind, it wasn't fun to stand around for too long!Sand - that HM last fall was 1:31:30ish ..about a 7:00/mile pace. I certainly don't expect to pick back up at that pace next month ...not enough quality training in this winter weather. I don't know how some of you go to races and able to run at training paces. I simply don't have the discipline for that. Kudos.
This came very easy. 8:14/156
It wasn't so tough. For one, this distance series is supposed to be a training tuneup for the big virginia beach event, the shamrock half/full marathon. Second, I can count on one hand the times I've run 30k in my entire life. So running at a tempo pace was as much about training as it was self preservation. I've only been putting in 20 to 25 mile weeks, so I wasn't really sure what 19 miles was going to feel like. Hindsight tells me I coudla pushed harder...I didn't really know that at the start of the race.Good job, dude.Finished a cold wet 30k in 2:25:34...rained the entire race. Congrats on your redemption!Week 7 was a recovery week. I'm feeling great....
Tue (9mi w/ 5LT) - Redo from last week's fail. Much better. It was dreary and drizzle the whole time, but I felt strong. 5LT miles @ 7:17/174. Very happy with that effort.
Training Report Week 11
Sun 22 miles. 7:45/135. Beautiful winter day for once. Temperature got into the low 40s, sunny and without that much wind. I felt OK although I probably didn't plan my meals right and was getting hungry near the end.
Overall, 70 miles for the week.

Awesome work.Training Report Week 11
Tues 15 miles, treadmill, average pace probably in the 7:40s.
Wed 6 recovery miles in a.m., 4 recovery miles in p.m. Treadmill both times. This was supposed to be Tuesday's runs but running a 15 miler didn't fit my schedule so I had to switch. I think average pace must have been 8:15 or so for these.
Thurs 6 miles. This was supposed to be a recovery run but after running two recovery runs in a row, I decided to push the pace a little. Outside, cold. 7:27/140 HR.
Fri 12 miles with 7 LT. I was hoping to run this outside but it had snowed earlier and was windy and sleeting a little when I got off work. I was worried about slipping on some ice in the dark so I decided on the gym. 3 up and 2 down. In the middle, first 5 at 6:27 pace, last 2 at 6:23. Heart rate probably averaged in the low 160s (I don't have data, I just glaced periodically at my watch.) I saw it as high as 167 but it settled in around 164 the last few. I felt pretty good for this one.
Sat 5 recovery. 8:42/122. At mile 4 I had some fun and tried to run below 9:00 with a HR below 120 but just missed -- 8:58/120. I'll have to try that again sometime.

That was right in the sweet spot for a 185 mHR (I think jux is around there).Holy crap - you forget a decimal?Serious question - what do you (or any of you long-distance guys) do stay hydrated while running a long way?Sun 22 miles. 7:45/135. I usually run little 1.7-2.1 mile loops around campus, so I'm passing by my truck pretty frequently. During the summer, I stop off for fluids every couple of laps. When it's cool/cold, I tend to go much longer without hydrating even though I know intellectually that I should still be drinking.Serious question - what do you (or any of you long-distance guys) do stay hydrated while running a long way?
