Maybe I need better winter gear. Even with a pair of gloves under a pair of mittens, my hands freeze when it's under 20. I could also use something for my face and neck.
I rarely wear anything on my face/neck. It literally needs to be in the teens below zero. I own a balaclava, but I hate it. Hard to breathe.
thiswore one when it was most bitterly cold out there a few weeks ago. my head got so hot i started to feel like i was hallucinating. but taking it off at that point would have meant frostbite for sure.

So I tried a 2-miler the other day to see how fast penis I was. I was not impressed. What's a general primer on how to get faster?

i hate wearing anything over the top of my head when running. i came across one of those ear warmer/headband things at Wal-Mart (like a beanie with the top cut out) that works great. it came with a neck warmer as well and i just sort of sat it off to the side figuring that i would never use it. broke it out the other day during a windy 18 degree run and wow did it do the trick. i liked that i can pull it up over my chin and mouth if needed, or back down if it gets too warm. it's also easy to pull off and stick in a pocket or waistband if it gets too hot. i don't use it on anything over 20 degrees because it feels like a furnace, but i'm loving it on those colder days.by the way, i've built back up to 5 miles (sprained an ankle playing basketball back in the fall that kept me from running for a while...i'm officially retired from pick-up basketball :P ). seems like every time i get to this level something happens to sideline me for a while (flu twice, shin splints, achilles, ankle)...i've taken it slow this time around building up and i plan on staying at my current mileage for a couple of weeks before adding any more.

I think your autocorrect has caught the gay. :unsure:ETA: Apparently, G H E Y gets caught in the filters these days. :loco:

This week was a recovery week. Only 58 miles.
That's this week for me. Funny how I can look at my schedule and see 15- and 17-mile runs and a 10/5T, and it's a recovery week. Riiiiight.Good luck with the 12/7!

8 miles this morning with 7 x 20-second strides. Hate those MFers, especially in the morning when my body isn't awake yet...

:wall: Was about to leave the house at 6:15 this morning when my 4 year-old got up as he had peed in the bed. After taking care of him, and having to be back before 9, I had to cut my 17 miler into a 15.5. Felt great, kept a sub-8:00 pace until the 13.5 mark when I pushed it down to a 7:15 for the last two. Back in time to stretch just a few minutes before the wife had to leave for her optometrist appointment. Total: 15.5, 2:01:12

So what is the furthest distance run by a FBG? I'm curious because I'm considering a 50 miler in the fall.
54 back in December for me. 100 slated for April.
Beast. How long did the 54 miler take you?
Too long...11h49m with about 8000 ft climbing.
Small, unimportant detail here.----

ON my end a penance run at lunch - 5 miles at 8:02/mile. Only 158 HR, so really not too hard a run. Feeling better about the world today.

this is what i sport sub-25 degrees or so. works incredibly well. got mine at the Saranac outlet for $4 :excited:

After a weekend full of sunny and 70 degree weather spent drinking and eating oysters just down the road from home, back at it today with 6 miles of singletrack around my favorite lakes. Serious change in the weather though - clouds, wind, even felt a drop of rain and it was probably only 50 degrees. I had to wear an extra long-sleeved layer, and a visor to keep my forehead warm! ;)Seriously though, I still have no idea how you guys even live, let alone run, in real winter weather.

Is it bad that when I'm bored (no plans tonight) the first thing I think about doing is running again? Do they have support groups for that??

Please tell me this is schtick. At 50 degrees, I'm in a singlet and shorts, and I'm sweating my ### off!
Mostly schtick, obviously a visor isn't used for warmth. But yes, I did wear a very thin long sleeve tech shirt over my dri-fit short sleeve because I felt cold when I started. By 20 minutes into it I was sweating pretty good, but since I was only going for 6 miles I didn't bother taking it off today.

I've heard there might be one in Nairobi. Although most group members just go out and run again when the thought occurs to them.

No doubt...love those days. But I seem to go from shorts to wanting tights quick...like there is very little in between that.Or the biggest thing is when its a bit windy and I need gloves.

Really got after it yesterday, did five in 33 minutes, into the wind for the finish because of poor pre run planning or i think I could have shaven another minute maybe. Still had energy to make gains lifting today too. Might do a more leisurely run tomorrow after two tough days, we will see how the morning goes...

:lol:Something I read on runners world way back that's always stuck with me. Dress for +20 degrees warmer than it is. Always works for me. Sweat is your enemy at 30 or below.

Saturday is Marathon Day. A look back at my training plan.Week 1 - recover from last race and don't run.Week 2 - decide that week 1 was such a success that you duplicate itWeek 3 - visit doctor, get the green light to trainWeek 4 - screw up mcl on 10 mile run, rehab mcl, run 1 mileWeek 5 - rehab mcl, run 2 miles, 2 mile hike followed by 2 mile run (all downhill) on Friday, bag Sat because it's coldWeek 6Sunday - speed workout 6 x 1/4 milesMonday - zone 2/3 10 mile @ 8:50 pace (fastest run in months) Tuesday - some sort of recovery runWednesday - bike intervalsThursday - 1/2 hr non-impact aerobicFriday - 1/2 hr somethingLooks like 27 miles or 6.5 miles per week. Don't matter, I'm bringing it on Saturday. :boxing: Saturday - Marathon Day

I would kill for some 20+ degree weather right now. It was 15-25 for about a week here last week and I started contemplating running outside again. Today I drove to the gym and it's -15 out.

While BnB isn't that fast my divinations say that BnB will do the 26, be bored after crossing the finish line, and go do it again just to fill in for a slow training day.

Other side of the world, but not as close to the pole. (about 1500-2000 miles away)

Or claim the course was too flat and go find a mountain to run up.

Or the biggest thing is when its a bit windy and I need gloves.
When in doubt, start the run wearing a pair of running socks as gloves. When your hands get too warm, place stated socks in the front of your shorts/tights. You now have warm hands, and look like you don't have shrinkage. win-win.

No speedwork? I'm surprised.

:lmao: that's ALL speedwork to me!!!
Exactly, those paces are faster than my speedwork.
It's all relative, though. For Steve, those paces would be slow. For Grue, that mileage would be Wednesday.

You guys are beasts!Since my 5K at the beginning of February, I've run 2 times per week ranging in distance from 2.6 to 4.5 miles. For now, just trying to stay consistent with the 2 times per week and see where that takes me. But I won't clog up the thread too much with my feable miles/times :-)

Post away. Everyone starts somewhere. Even better sign up for something slightly nutty and keep us informed on how training is progressing.

4 miles in gusty winds... 26 minutes. Jacked about these last couple days, lifting only tomorrow and taking Thursday to rest.

Actually, that's about how fast I run all of my non-workout runs too. On most days, that's about as fast as I can/want to run too.

+1 as well. I got on a scale about 5 years ago on New Year's Eve after letting myself go at a Vegas buffet and was exactly 50 lbs over my college racing weight and thought "I gotta start exercising again". My only motivation for running then was so I wouldn't die young from heart problems like my mom did. Now I am a decent age-grouper and thinking about hanging around for another decade or so to see how I would stack up against other masters.Like Sand suggested, sign up for something slightly out of your comfort zone and start training. Once you run a few races and start improving it tends to become pretty addicting. Good luck.

[bourne] "It gets easier" [/bourne]
I can tell you the license plate numbers of all six cars outside. I can tell you ..., and at this altitude, I can run flat out for a half mile before my hands start shaking. Now why would I know that? How can I know that and not know who I am?
