Ran a 10k in June (8 Viewers)

cracked 10 for the first time ever this morning
Nice. This is a big milestone and I hope you enjoyed it.
big fan. didn't seem all that bad until the very end when i realized it was winding down.

some leg pain for about 30 minutes afterwards but i'm fine now.
Nice job furley  For some reason I alwas thought you had gone farther than that before. Awesome breaking that double digit mark! You'll be talking about marathons before the end of the year
no marathons on the horizon for me. i want to do some trail stuff this summer. maybe a trail half

Bib #137 if you want to follow this debacle.

Race plan - bank miles early, try to hang on and finish.

A goal - 24 hours. 14:24 pace. I only mention this because I would like to get the first 25 miles done on this plan. 2:20 for lap one, 2:35 for lap two. 4:55 at the quarter pole. 2:45 lap three and 3:00 for lap four. 5:45 for the second quarter and 10:40 at the halfway point. I'd have to average 14:48 from here or 3:05 laps to make it in 24 hours which won't happen.

B goal - Beat the 30 hour cutoff. 2:30 for lap one, 2:45 for lap two. 5:15 at the quarter pole which is doable. 3:00 for lap three and 3:15 for lap four. 6:15 for the second quarter and 11:30 at the halfway mark. Basically accomplished this at Table Rock so this is a good goal. That leaves 18 hours (plus 30 min contingency plan) to do 50 miles. 21'36" miles which I can walk will get me there.

Temps will range between the upper 30s and upper 60s. No rain forecasted. No shade as the leaves aren't out yet.

Forgot to mention, first mile is dedicated to Sand and will be sub 10:00.
4th lap complete:

1 - 2:00

2 - 2:07

3 - 2:28

4 - 2:46

Total elapsed time: 9 hours, 21 minutes. He's halfway done. (!!!) However, he's over an hour ahead of his 'A goal' plan (and his fourth lap target was 3:00). He effectively SandedTM the first 50 miles. Go BnB!!!
As much as I bow to Steve and that kind of speed...

The ultimate :tebow: has to go to sanding the first 50 freakin miles of this thing for BNB.

Incredible.
Yeah, you don't Sand this much. He's just in much better shape than he suspected. Not the slightest bit surprised.

Congrats Duck and Beer! Duck - definitely need a race report at some point. Great stuff.

----

On my end I went out on a 55 mile ride. Today was my first ride with the new steed. Felt good and rode pretty well. On the one part of the ride I really wanted to hit I dropped my climb time from 8:57 to 8:18 - a full 7% drop. I think I'm liking the new bike.

Awesome race and report Beer!

Latest update on BnB, through 7 laps in 18:45. (last lap 3:26). Looks like even with a slight fade he'll be around 22 hours. Sick sick stuff.

Trail running is such a different animal. There are parts of me that hurt that I didn't know I had. I'm the proud owner of two new blisters, my ankles and arches are sore as hell from all the roots & rocks. Running through mud above your ankles makes sense when you are being chased by an animal that wants to eat you, only humans pay money to do it of their own free will. All that said I had a great time, really challenging course (a few folks told me the course we ran today was one of the toughest in Charlotte) and the group of folks involved just made it fantastic. Runners are such cool people, thank you guys
Love this. Well done, and welcome to the wonderful world of trail running!

Way to go, BNB. That's one hell of an effort.

Duck - Congrats on getting the qualifier. If you get picked in the lottery, let me know if you need a pacer...

beer - Nice job on the half.

Furley - Congrat on another distance PR!

7 miles (or BnB - 93) this morning for the second weekend in a row. is it bad that i was thinking 61 degrees felt almost too warm??? i'm sure i'll be begging for 60's in a month or so.

Can we "lock in" weather forecasts like you can mortgage rates? Current forecast for Boston = overnight low of 41° on Sunday, high of 48° on Marathon Monday. Fingers crossed...

Anne Springs Close Greenway Trail 1/2 Marathon

What a great day, so much to post but not sure if I'll get it all in. As close to perfect weatherwise as you could get, 45 at the start 61 at finish, bright blue sky's after a few days of rain & overcast. Sadly the race was not well attended but there was probably 50 of us or so in the half and close to that for the 8k that followed our start. A small local running club that has welcomed me the last few weeks put it on and what made it so awesome was all of these folks are accomplished runners so they know where & when to set up water stops, how to set up a challenging course and how to take care of everyone afterwards. That's what really made the day special, the people just made it great.

On to the race, since I have about zero trail experience the plan was to start int eh back of the pack, run hard but not stupid and try to finish up around 2:30 for the run. Within the first 1/2 mile or so the small pack spread out and there was little passing afterward. Everyone had their own pace, stuck with it and if yours mirrored someone elses you had a running partner for the day. It just so happened after I settled in that I fell in behind two guys following a woman. The four of us ran the the first 3 miles or so together being paced by the woman. She pulled up and let us all pass (the whole course is essentially single track except for a very few areas wide enough to actually pass) by and then faded dramatically. Not sure what she was anticipating but we hadn't even got to the difficult part of the course yet so it was good she let us pass.

The next couple of miles where pretty uneventful, we all passed a woman who ended up being 1st in her age group at some point but other than that it was uneventful with just some ups & downs. The two guys I was pacing with got ahead of me by a decent distance but never out of sight so I figured as long as I could still see them I was good.

We all stopped to grab water and I caught up to them as they refilled their carry bottles (I opted to go without carrying just to see how I would fair, I'm not carrying anymore during a race under a 1/2). I joked that they couldn't stop because I was following them but we all kinda started back up together with me in the lead. Went that way until probably mile 7 or 8 when I decided to biff on some roots. Pride hurt more than anything else, got up dusted off and essentially just let them pass as I fell back in right behind them.

That's about when it really started getting fun. I had run the hills through this portion of the trail before but backwards. We started going up about mile 9 and didn't stop until I sat down in my truck. Absolutely brutal uphills that had me walking three times. I was running the downhills as best I could but I didn't have a lot left in the tank for the uphills. This is the part of the course I really relied on my brother to get me through. That's a whole different story I mentioned in a different post so I won't rehash it here but I kept reminding myself when I felt like throwing in the towel. It's tough when you walk a steep uphill to start chugging again, the temptation to walk a few extra steps is a great one but luckily my pacers kept me honest. As soon as they started running again, I did so I kept with them and for a good portion of mile 11 & 12 I was right on their heels. It was around now when we all got chicked by some smarmy youngen that we just couldn't keep up with. She ended up being 1st in her age group as well. The last mile was sorta flat around the lake but the final .2 sprint to the finish was a nasty uphill that was like a kick in the crotch but it was cool because of all the support from the other runners and volunteers.

As I rounded the corner to the finish and saw the clock I was happily relieved to see it flip to 2:25 as I passed. My GPS program was way off in the woods so I really didn't know where I was timewise. Shook hands with the pacers and the smarmy chick and sat around for awards. At this time I didn't have a clue what my finish time was as I forgot to hit the stop button when I crossed. As awards were being handed out and they got to my age group I learned it was the deepest in the field and looking at results I finished 9th out of 10 :lmao: I've come to find out that my age group is one of the most competitive in the area. Official time 2:25:30  I think I'm happy with it because it's the first goal I've it since I started running.

Trail running is such a different animal. There are parts of me that hurt that I didn't know I had. I'm the proud owner of two new blisters, my ankles and arches are sore as hell from all the roots & rocks. Nice work.

40 miles for me for the week featuring 12 miles on Monday (8 at tempo) and 15 miles yesterday (7 at moderate tempo). Can't let furley hog all the double-digit runs! I'll do some speed work and stretching over coming days while doing a modest taper heading into my trail race in two weeks.

Duck, I'd have some interest in pacing as well.

So the Boston crowd up next?

Beer-Nice race and write up

BnB- I dont know what to say :tebow: Just incredible

Duck- congrats and we need a write up

Lots of awesomeness in here

Thanks for the sweat gents. Yesterday was just one of those days. Banked time on the first lap and decided to roll with it as long as I could. First goal was to to bank enough that I could walk and finish under 30. Soon that became bank enough time I could could walk and first under 24 hours. I fully expected the wheels to fall off, but they never did until mile 88. Walked basically the entire last lap with a couple of shuffles down hill.

Body felt great for the first 50 expcect for some bathroom issues. Changed clothes after lap 5. Boinked for about a mile mile during lap 6. After lap seven the body had had enough and the aches became stronger than my will. Everything seized up afterwards. Using some old golf clubs as crutches right now as I can stand up on my own and my steps are about 2" each stride. I don't I'll be running for quite some time.

Just an awesomely run event. Great support and people. Huge props to a pacer I picked up at lap 6 and my gf for her crewing. John Duck as a WS lottery qualifer. I'll do a race report later in the week and drop some more thoughts were I'm coherent.

BnB, thanks for the report and all, but what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be sleeping or drinking heavily?

I am in awe, congrats. Wow :tebow:

Beer and Duck, great stuff. Enjoy.

Nice runs, Prince and Furley.

I ran a slow 21-miler yesterday to cap off a near PR 65-mile week. I am feeling it. Will head out for 6-10 here shortly.

Duck, how are you feeling post-race? Between lingering injuries and the effect of a 50-mile race, I expect you're operating at less than 100%! Hopefully you lined up some beers in a cold ice bath and got a double-dose of numbness.

What a weekend! You guys are truly inspiring.

Any other weeekend and Beer and Duck have by far the most grueling and studly days. Great job to you both.

Awesome job, furley. People in this thread are amazing and partly insane so you see double digit runs in here all the time. But 99% of the people in the world have never accomplished what you have...congrats!

And BnB...what do you say abpout BnB? The guy ran more miles in (less than) a day than most people drive in a week. Simply incredible! Enjoy your much needed rest.

Awesome - I'll be very disappointed if I show up at your place and you don't have a "100" sticker on the car.

Better than BNB! My right IT band is a wreck so every time I stop moving and then start again it takes awhile for my knee to bend. That started at about mile 14, btw! My left knee is a bit swollen, I look like I was l knifed across my front from waist band chafing, and all my muscles are sore. I also have three nice blisters, which I popped last night while my feet were numb from the 20 minute ice bath I took. Can't wait for DOMS to set in tomorrow....

Duck - congrats on a great race. That's a great time on a wicked course. Maybe we'll both get lucky on the lottery!!!

Calfskin & hammys jumped on the pain train today but just general soreness. Feeling for Duck & BnB, I can't imagine walking right after what you two just your bodies through. Still in awe, inspiring weekend of running from you two!

My 6yo son a 4yo daughter did their first races this past weekend - junior Carlsbad. Highly recommend - it was a great feeling! They loved it. My son ran a 1/2 mile in 4:20 and they didn't time my daughter but she did a 1/4 mile.

Shortened training week after vacation - 3 10 milers and a recovery run before yesterday's adventure... Which was a ton of fun. Don't know where all of this energy came from, but wow. Major confidence booster for the triple.

The 5K was a late 1PM start. GB college kids. The course was on part of my regular Sunday LR route, so I figured why the hell not. It's a great tuneup/simulator for the triple. The start was a shade over 7 miles from home, so I left the house at 11:15.

Run #1 - 7mi MLR @ 8:54/142. Legs felt great. It seemed like I got there in no time. In hind sight, I got there a little too early. 45 minutes of just signing up and waiting around drove me nuts. I jogged around another mile or so just to keep moving. At least the scenery was nice. Sorry Steve, I couldn't snap any pics. I already felt like the old creepy dude without trying to sneak out a few pics of college chicks in black pants. Looking at results, the 19-29 females were 119 deep!

5K Race - This crowd was probably 90% college students. I'm only 34, but damn I felt old. I planned on running a normal 5K as if it was the only run for the day. It was a downhill start, with some small rolling hills on the 2nd mile. Windy as hell too - 20mph.

Mile 1 @ 6:29/178. Pretty easy to SandTM the start going downhill with the wind at your back. Legs were OK, but it felt like I had no 6th gear. I actually wanted to run faster down this section, but this was about all I had without getting out of control.

Mile 2 @ 6:55/189. I could definitely feel the legs were a little spent when we hit the rollers. We had more of a crosswind here. A few kids complaining about the "hills" was funny.

Mile 3 @ 6:42/191. After hitting the turnaround and running back into the wind, I started to wonder if I was going to bonk. That wind hurt. I glanced at the watch and noticed we had about 0.75 left and thought 'noooooo. I can hang on for 5 more minutes'. Chased down 1 guy, and caught another. 2nd one heard me coming and dropped the hammer at the 3rd mile marker. I had zero kick and just let him go. :hot: Finish was uphill for the final 0.1 and I had zilch. Finished that out at 6:42 pace also for a finish of 20:57.

That was my 2nd fastest 5K time ever. Unreal. I didn't have time to stick around for awards, but I ended up placing 12/336 OA and 2/5 AG. Kinda feels like I cherry picked my AG since it was mostly college kids.

Run #3 - 7mi @ 8:32/164. I walked around for about 10 minutes after the race to regain composure. Chugged some gatorade and downed a gel. I wanted to try and push the effort a little just to simulate having to push on tired legs. I'm shocked I had this much left in me. It took a mile or so to get in the groove, but after that I was cruisin'. The HR is high for that pace, but that's expected. I felt like I could've kept going for a couple more miles.

I thought about SF and BnB quite a bit yesterday. If they can run that far in a day, I should be able to handle this 'piddly' stuff.

 Always fun watching the little ones run those races!

Ned, super job on your triple! That's a great 5K time early in the year and after an extended warm-up. eta: And, ahem ...well done with the AG placement.

Crossword question in this morning's paper: "___'nuff!"

Cherry Blossom 10 miler Race Report

Goal - had been aiming for a low 8 min pace (finished half marathon in Nov at 8:23). But have had nagging Achilles problems for last 3 weeks, so training has suffered recently...

About 17,000 runners

I went into mid range corral....8-9min pace....was CROWDED with lots of other ranges mixed in there....not good

At the start, WAY too crowded....first 2 miles I could not get pace set, lots of dodging, weaving, etc. First mile was at 9:30...all because of crowds. Mile 2 was the same!

Miles 3-5, the course opened up...I tried to hammer it...did those three miles back in the 8:10-8:30 range. But then felt myself running out of steam...I think my poor training the last 3 weeks definately slowed me down....at that point, resigned myself to lock in at 9 min pace, finish, and not hurt the Achilles again!

Once I made that mindset shift, I actually settled back in and enjoyed the last 5 miles!!! Amazing scenery and course (starts at Washington monument, runs by Lincoln, Jefferson, Tidal Basin, etc)

Anyway...finished at 1:30:00....exactly 9:00 pace....not my best time, but still a good fun run! (and better than my 2010 time of 1:35:00)

I will never understand people getting in start corrals they don't belong in. I don't have an issue with being within a minute/mile of their pace but sometimes you see people much slower who obviously have no business being there. Personally it would make me crazy knowing that I was in everyone's way and that they're probably cursing me under their breath as they pass.

Lots to still catch up on.

Hang10, thanks for the info on Va Beach Half. Gonna figure out if I do that soon or...

like Steve said, Philly Half is nice and flat. Steve, that's where I ran my one and only Half last year. I'm in NC now but parents still in Philly area. May be a good excuse to go back and visit.

Great job, Ned! What's the PR? Looks like you may be able to flirt with sub20 on fresh legs...

Nice job, Dan. Always heard the Cherry Blossom was a nice event.

Nice job Ned & Dan!!

Only in this thread will you read about someone sandwiching in a 5k in the middle of a 18 mile training run for grins

Dan, way to be smart about the race and still posting a good time! 17000 is freakin' nuts! I had 51 at mine on Saturday :lmao:

Nice job, Dan. Glad that achilles is OK. They can be so finicky.

koby - Yup, sub 20 is definitely on the list for this summer. 20:39 is my PR. Feel pretty good about breaking 20 with some focused speed work and fresh legs. 'Summer of Speed' is on the schedule after this trail triple is over with. Only 19 days left...
