Ran a 10k in June (7 Viewers)

To be serious...I don't know.

My 8 year old did the Color Run 5k thing with me last fall.

Though...first bridge he was huffing it within a half mile. We walked and jogged.

The first color area bothered him a good deal as it was in a spot downtown tight with buildings and nowhere for that dust to go.

But he loved it and wants to get into more running with me here and there when I start up again this summer.

Kids have no sense of pacing. Completely normal.

I tried my first "hill" work out today. I was on the treadmill so I set it at an incline of 2 at a 10:00 pace for three miles. My regular run is at 9:22 pace with incline at 1.

I am not sure if I am doing this right but I figure I could slowly raise that incline every workout. I plan on doing this every other week. I will be doing intervals on the other weeks. Does this sound reasonable? My goal is to maybe get faster and for sure be able to take on some hills this fall.
Instead of setting it at a specific incline all the way, I like some of the "rolling hills" options on the treadmill. I'll stay at a certain speed but the incline will vary from 0% to 6.5%. I like the varying effort and how it will get your heart rate up on the hills and then you can ease through the flats.
Thanks, I will give that a shot next time. :thumbup:

Hey, guys. My friend Tim is a survivor of stage 4 brain cancer and is trying to gain entry to Kona via the "Kona Inspired" program. If you could take a quick minute to check out his video and vote, it would be greatly appreciated. Here's the link, and his video is the one called "Runnin' Down A Dream." Here's a link to an article about him that ran in the local paper a few weeks ago. Pretty inspirational story, and one of the strongest, nicest, most courageous people I know.

Thanks in advance!
Done- Very inspiriational!!!!!

If I can vote more I will.

As usual a lot of great stuff around here.

Tri, belated congrats on the beastly 15-miler.

2young2bbald, awesome work for your son! Reckon we'll see a sub-50 out of him in the next year or two.

Hang- Nice to see you rounding into form.

Sand- The cycling stuff is beyond me too but I know PRs are always good.

Prince- The first time you do 10 is always special. Congrats man.

Jux, Prosopopis- Jack Daniels Running Formula has a pretty good section on running on inclines on treadmills and how the efforts translate. (p. 137 in the 2nd edition). I feel like those numbers may even be a little conservative as they seem to imply that a 1-1.5 incline on a treadmill is equivalent to running on flat ground.

To give you an idea of the effects of inclines. For running at 6.0 mph (10 min/mile) on the treadmill.

2.9 degree incline -> 9:19/mile effort

4.8 degree incline -> 8:15/mile effort

6.6 degree incline -> 7:24/mile effort

8.4 degree incline -> 6:44/mile effort

10.2 degree incline -> 6:11/mile effort.

Or speedwork equivalents when your treadmill tops out at 10 mph (6min/mile)

2.6 degree incline -> 5:43/mile effort

3.6 degree incline -> 5:19/mile effort

4.6 degree incline -> 4:59/mile effort

5.5 degree incline -> 4:42/mile effort

8.5 degree incline -> 4:01/mile effort

etc...
Thanks for the numbers. I had no idea.

I hate to say it but it is already in the 90's here. I do get out when I can hit the roads at sunrise but there are no hills near me. All my long runs are done on the road.

Heading up to Illinois at noon. Forecast looks ok, 45 for the morning low, 65 for the high. I should finish before it gets that warm.

I feel ok, but have no idea what to expect. I am guessing anywhere between 4:10 and 4:25.

Taper has gone well.

Good luck to all the racers.

2Young, that's great. On the verge of varsity 4x4 as a Frosh is incredible. I will be interested to hear how he runs in the 4x800. Of course the race may dictate otherwise, but if he is in the lead or in no man's land and I coached him, I'd suggest he take it out in 66-67 for the first 400m which should leave him plenty in the tank to equal that or possibly negative split. I will conservatively predict a 2:14 split.

I am wondering on when kids get into it also. My daughter who just turned 3 already shows interest watching the races and says she wants to race like Daddy :wub: And she runs around constantly even going from activity to activity. My wife says she is already faster than she is. Of course 3 is way too young for any type of distances but I may see if she wants to do a kids dash at one of these races soon (typically 300-400 yards)...maybe a mile fun run in a year or so?

All the race talk has me chopping at the bit to go kick some butt.
Yeah...went down to the Expo for the Country Music Marathon today with my daughter (hey...I paid for the damn thing Im going to get my free stuff...even if I end up donating the shirt or something...likely will wear it to mow the grass as Im not a fan of white tech shirts anyway...damn hairy chest).

Had my dying to get back out there again.

They gave out a cool little rubber bracelet thing that says Run Now on one side and Boston 4-15-13 on the other.

Oh yes...that and a cooler day...so plenty of tight pants at the expo today.

Looking forward to great races by Ned, 2Young, and worrierking ...three very different events this weekend. Do well, guys!
Add me to that group. My first race of the season is tomorrow morning at 6:30, a small 5K. Thanks to the snow, I haven't done any 5K-specific training at all, so while I plan to race this all-out, it's really going to be more about setting a benchmark that I hope to better later in the summer/fall.

Yep. Our local running club sponsors a free 5K every arbor day morning -- each participant gets a tree to take home. I've never done this event before because, well, I don't really feel like getting up at 4:00 to eat, get some coffee in my system, hit the loo, and warm-up to be ready to go by 6:30 and then work the rest of the day, but I resolved to do every local race this year so I'm doing this one.

Good luck fella's, looking forward to hearing about the different races this weekend!!!!

A tree. . .you hang all your medals on it to decorate ;)

New question: most unique race award you've received?

Wow, that's different. Good luck.

EVERY local race? Where you from? If I did that where I'm at, I'd be doing around 600 races per year. :lol:

Brookings, SD. This is the website for our running club. "Doing every race" basically means a half, a 10K, several 5Ks, and a 15.25 mile race. (The story behind that last one is that 50 years ago, the university's cross-country coach dropped his runners off in the middle of a nearby town and forced them to run back to our main campus landmark -- it turned into an annual event). I'm not doing the triathlon or any of the little charity events that student groups put on unless they just happen to fit with my schedule.

You doing the one mile race? I've been curious lately how fast I could do a single mile.

I probably will, yeah. It's been many years since I did that one.

Most unique - I won a pie with an engraved spatula with gold handle for winning my age group - there were silver and bronze handles for 2nd and 3rd. Thought that was a pretty cool idea.

I haven't been running enough. Working too much. Pushing both of my boys in a double jogging stroller sunday in a 5K. Hoped for 20 minutes but thinking that may be a pipe dream. We'll see i guess

Good luck to all the racers. I did not realize how many we had this weekend. I to am feeling the need to get in a race. My next one is June :kicksrock:

Arbor Day 5K

Up at 4:00, breakfast, coffee, bathroom, etc. 6:30 start. No wind, upper 30s. About 100 or so people. The course is a loop through and around campus -- I've run many hundreds of miles on this course in various pieces.

Mile 1: 7:03

Mile 2: 7:05

Mile 3: 7:03

0.12: 6:04/mi pace

Total: 21:56

That's good for a PR by about 13 seconds, The best part was that I was able to hold off some student who tried to pick me off at the end. I wasn't wearing headphones, so I heard him coming up behind me. Not today, guy. Any time you set you a new PR at 40 and hold off a guy half your age at the end, it's a good day.

I fn love race-eve. So pumped to get this thing on. I'm going to push my limits on this thing, full well knowing I may go too far and blow up. I really think I can compete with most of these guys. Only one way to find out....

HM gun is at 7:30. Targeting around 1:50. Course is a mix of everything and pretty hilly. No rain at all this week, so the creek level should be nowhere near where it was last year (over the knees). I'm guessing mid-calf high this time based on what I saw last Sunday.

10K gun is at 10:00. That gives me 0:40 to refuel, change socks/shoes, and stay loose. I made the mistake of not running during this break last yr and I tightened up too much. Targeting around 0:55. This is the easiest course of the 3, with the middle miles being nice and flat along the creek. Big uphill finish though.

5K gun is at 11:15. That gives me 0:20 to refuel and stay loose. Hopefully I'll be able to eat a little more than last year. I just couldn't get much down at this break. No idea what I'll have left, but I would love to break 0:30. Course is very hilly and technical, so I know 30 is a huge stretch. All wood will be on the fire at the gun.

GL to everyone else this weekend. I'll be thinking about y'all. :thumbup:

Congrats to Ivan on a good race, and good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

I'm meeting a buddy tomorrow at 4:30am to head down to an organized training run on the race course for my 50-miler. We're doing an out-and-back covering (basically) the last 19 miles of the course. Been treating the ITB pretty aggressively this week with a massage, some ultrasound treatment, a chiropractic adjustment, and a couple of PT sessions aimed at strengthening my hips and glute medius. It's not 100% yet, but it's definitely feeling better, so hopefully it holds up.

Solid PR. And how you held such a steady pace I'll never know. No way I'd ever put up splits like that.

On my end, not much new. 25 mile ride last night. Easy ride - 190w avg. 237w normalized. Set one KOM (woohoo!) and set a new power PR at 334w for 5 minutes.

Nice job Ivan! Great way to start race weekend off!!!

Congrats on PR, Ivan!

Ned - I'm expecting PRs in all three distances!

Good luck to the other racers!

Dang Sand - Looks like the over/under on the number of beers you consume at the finish waiting on me is up to three. You need to seriously start thinking about ride with the lead group for the first 50 miles.

Broke out the TT bike last nite to prep it for tomorrows du. I felt horrible and could barely hold 12 mph up a 1% grade that I usually hold 18 mph. Even had the sub-zero in back and 800 up front. Felt lke retiring from riding altogether. Got back home and notice the that rear caliper wasn't just dragging, but that I had chewed up a good bit of my rear brake pad. Time for a tuneup as the cable is sticking bad. I'm going to ride the road bike tomorrow instead. Probably a better call given the weather expectations and zero training on the tri-bike for about a year.

You know, if you want to go anywhere you need to remember to release the parking brake. ;)

SayWhat, why didnt you post your times
Sorry for the delay, been mostly away for a couple days. I had posted the follwing before in response to your inquiry about uploading my running history from my Garmin:

I'd upload my history to connect.garmin, though 95% of my runs this year have been on the treadmill with no footpod so I don't think the data would do much good. I didn't realize that was something you could do, so I'll keep that in mind as I start to get outdoors for runs now that the weather is turning. That said, I assume that uploaded to connect.garmin allows others to see everything about your runs, including time/location? If so, doesn't that make you at all uncomfortable that others know when you're typically not home and for what periods of time (and I suppose where you live if you are able to run from your residence like I often do)? Yeah, that's my paradoid side likely overanalyzing a bit.
Thoughts?
