Ran a 10k in June (3 Viewers)

Drive by RR as we head over for lunch woth fanily....Ran 20:09. First half of the course was uphill and zapped me pretty good. Second half was flat and downhill which salvaged the time. Ended up getting my first ever AG win. Went 1/18 AG and 6/346 OA. Battled with the same guy from last week. He's now 2-0 against me. Found out he's a total ##### (yelled at a water station volunteer and all but stiffed me on a post race hand shake). Its now my mission to beat his ###.Splits from memory were around 6:20, 7:03, 6:16. I gave a lot of time up in the hills on that second mile. :X
Congrats on the win!!!!

I will be in the Lakewood area of Denver this week doing some training for work. Anybody know of any good parks or trails to run on in that area? It will be nice to get out of the humidity of Houston for a few days.

Happy Father's Day to all the dad's in here!

12 miles for me this morning (a new distance PR). I had my new hydration belt that my wife and daughter got me for Father's Day and my first ever GU. Man that stuff has a nasty texture, but it definitely helped. I had bonked a bit around mile 7 or 8 on my last couple of long runs, but no problems today.

Hang 10 - Awesome job! Congrats! I have a 5 miler next week so you've given me a time to shoot for! :P
You better aim higher than my times! You're probably looking good for 30 minutes flat.
Considering by 5K PR last week was at that pace, there is no way I could keep that up for another 2 miles.
My 5-miler in March was at 6:16 pace. And that effing hurt.

A standard Higdon marathon training week:

T: 4 miles easy

W: 5 miles focused on hill repeats

Th: 7 miles tempo run (building to about 10-12 minutes at 10K pace)

F: 5 miles easy

S: 11 miles with 9 at marathon pace (7:46/mile, 153 HR)

S: 18 miles easy (8:40/mile, 144 HR)

50 miles for the week. The final few miles on Saturday were steady at a 156 HR, so that's a good baseline going forward. Today, the HR climbed later in the run - combination of a new distance for the training season and the temperature climbing toward 80 degrees.

--

After today's run, had a nice, late breakfast with my daughter, son, and his girlfriend. Before the run, dropped my wife at the airport so she could go visit a close friend for 5 days. A good day.

A lot of dads with young kids here ...Happy Father's Day to you all! Crazy days, and crazy years, but it's all worth it. Enjoy!!!

Congrats on all the racers. Ned --> special congrats on the AG win during a tough week.

===========================

Saturday, I ran my 5K with hopes to get to 22:30 (well off my 20:46 PR and 21:48 from this race last year) but my training has been dismal and I've gained 15 lbs of muscle from lifting. Went out and did a 7:11 first mile but the wheels came off and finished at 23:20. I normally would be pissed but I realize this is what I am right now.

This morning, I lifted and then went out and ran 9 miles at 9:29 pace. The 9 miles is my first run over 6.5 since my marathon in November. I'm going to do my first speed workout (since October) in middle of this week. Its going to suck.

Happy fathers day all!

Busy weekend in here, nice job guys, good to read about everyone pushing the mark!

Well, that sucked. I just got back from local 10K. The forecast was for the low 70s but it was actually 80 at the start. I don't have the dew point but I'm sure the SI was around 150. The smart thing to do would have been to just treat this as a training run. . .

Total: 47:52 (7:39 pace)
LOL, the smart thing to do. That statement doesn't get a lot of play in this thread, you must be new here, welcome, enjoy ;) I still think that's a pretty awesome time especially given the conditions. They ain't all victories but they are all learning experiences.
Ran a 32:03 for the 8k. PR Give a bit more detail later.
Nice job Hang10 & congratulations on the PR!!!! Smoking fast man!

Wow Ned, given all you're going through emotionally now, well you can tell this one was for Mom. Nice job man and congratulations. Very impressive. As for the #####, whoopin' his ### and turning your nose up to him on the podium sounds like an adequate payback. Nothing like douchery to keep you sharp.
2940 on my first one. Up a freaking mountain and trails. Had no idea how hilly it would be. You guys are some running fools!
Nice job man! Welcome to the club!!! Trails would not be my recommendation to start racing, I hate trails and they hate me ;)
Dad's Day 5K run, Houston

Total time 22:45.

Definitely left it all out on the course. Very happy with my result. I know I can do 22 minutes, not sure if I have the speed to get to 20 minutes.
Awesome run man!!! I don't know how you guys survive in that heat and put up times like these. I'd melt like a stick of butter.
Sprint & Splash 5K Run/2-Mile Kayak Duathlon Race Report

5K: Ended up finishing, with a bit of a kick, in 21:43 (a PR by 1:16, and I was shocked when I saw the Garmin).

Transition: I barely got me legs in the yak.

2-Mile Kayak: Two guys with much longer boats (kayak envy) passed me and those that had 15'+ kayaks had a much easier day (I have an 11') as they could cut the wind and waves.

Ended up 3rd in my AG, but would have won just about every other male AG. The Mid-Life Crisis Division is always so strong.
Whole lotta AWESOME in this update and very little to do with the race. Great 5k PR! The Irish might go down as my favorite comment of the year. You even have the baby kayak? Mid-Life Crisis Division, another classic. Nice job on the AG 2Y2BB

Congrat's on the distance PR! 12 is a helluva long way, keep up the good work. That belt will ad another 5 miles or so for you ;)
finished at 23:20. I normally would be pissed but I realize this is what I am right now.
Everybody goes through stages, you put on 15lbs  and still ran a 23 minute 5k, that's impressive in my book. If you focus on one thing you lose in another area, find the balance between the two and crush it! I remember your times from the marathon with Ned last year, shouldn't be a problem for you.===========================================================================================

Nice job guys, lot of motivation in this thread lately.

A solid 13 yesterday, mostly took it nice and slow and steady. Eased into it early, then picked it up a little in the middle with sort of a fartlek round where I mixed it up. Then a nice long cool down.

Of course the 13 I'm referring to is the number of hours spent drinking at a campground yesterday. A great Father's Day just kicking back with my daughter, playing with her in the pool, at the playground, watching a movie under the stars, and winding down around the campfire. Decided running could wait for a few days....

Got a pretty good 10 miles in this morning after church. First time this year that I've had to break out the sunscreen for my scalp. I was parched by the time I got back to my house, but good otherwise.

Nice racing everyone! Those are some nice times for this time of year.

I ramped back up to 38.5 miles for the last week ended. Pretty good week other than making the mistake of running in the heat of the day yesterday with a suck index near 170 (92/76). Wanted to go first thing but the family surprised me with Father's Day gifts and breakfast. I was aiming for 8 miles but had to walk during a run for the first time in a long time. Stopped to walk around 5.5 close to a water station, got some water and walked a bit more to get the core temp down and then finished up with another couple miles. My breathing was fine but I could just tell that I needed to cool down some. Pre kids that would've been something I would've toughed through but it doesn't seem worth it these days. And I would've been wiped out all day if I even made it through unscathed. The effort was still there and so what if I needed a break. Better to be safe in these conditions. Then I lounged in the refreshing pool all afternoon

May I just say ditto to this. Great stuff all around.

Sooooooooo, I'm sure this has been asked a bazillion times, but what kid of shoes do you guys wear? I need something with a little more cushion than my Frees for my longer 10+ mile runs. Got 11 in on Saturday and am paying for it with some nasty blisters. Someone mentioned WaveRiders i think.

Ran 7 hilly miles in CO on saturday. Then hiked 3.82 miles with 1500 ft elevation gain. Hiked again sunday. Have no idea how I am going to run 3 miles tonight. Legs feel like jello.

Cracked me up running right next to prairie dogs yappin at me. Hadn't been to CO since I was a kid and I already cant wait to go back. Makes me realize just how flat the midwest is.

New Balance 1260v2 right now. Have run New Balance 1080's before those but I've come to need a stability shoe so went with the 1260's. Have a pair of Asics GT 2000's sitting on the shelf because I can't wear them, about 100 miles on them if anyone is interested ;) I've also got a cheap pair of Nike trail shoes that absolutely kill my feet on anything over about 6 miles because they are too small. Full disclosure I have large feet so my shoe selection is a bit limited (14 4E).

Get Ned or grue to give you a line up. They're both shoe whuores.

Blisters might be the result of wearing shoes that are too small (usually running shoes should be about a size larger than your normal shoes) moreso than how much cushioning they have. Since everyone's feet and running style are different, you are best getting fitted at a running store that specializes in this stuff. I recommend here.

If you had general aches and pains rather than blisters, it would be more likely that you needed more cushioning. Blisters are probably something else. Could be your socks or it could be your shoes are too small. Feet swell during runs and the longer you run, the more likely you are to chafe inside your shoes.

If you still end up seeking more cushioning, I have run in ASICS Gel Nimbus, Mizuno Wave Creations and Saucony Triumphs, all neutral cushioned shoes.. They all work for me, although they have different attributes. Coming from the Frees to a cushioned shoe, I would guess the Triumphs would be the ones that feel best for you, since they have less heel height that the others. Maybe the Creations would feel okay, since they are very firm, not squishy, but they are very heavy compared to the Frees. Good luck.

Some serious speed and pr crushing going on in here.

FYI don't buy a Nike+ GPS watch. These things are POS's. Already gone through 2 in less than 2 years and nike's website is a buggy mess.

Time to buy a new watch. Suggestions? Don't want to spend more than $200.

For 99% of people, the Garmin Forerunner 10 ($130) is all you need. Doesn't have a HRM, though.

13-mile run tonight, my longest since the 50-miler last month. Actually ran 13.1 because, well, you kinda have to.

Averaged exactly 8:00/mile despite running through a thunderstorm and then sunny, humid conditions afterwards. Felt like a bag of #### towards the end, but happy that I pushed through and held a decent pace (sub-8 last 6+ miles).

I'd try New Balance 890v2 or v3. The v3 came out not that long ago, so you might be able to find the v2 on clearance somewhere.

Being a self-admitted "shoe whore," I think I've got 3-4 pairs of unworn v2s in my closet...

ETA: Wave Riders are going to have a lot more cushion than your Frees. If you wanna check out Mizuno, try the Wave Precision. Ran my 2:59 in those. :)

I had 6 on my schedule today. Went to the gym and due to lack of time only got two done. Did what I had to do and got home for late dinner. Not doing the six was weighing heavily on my mind. I ended up lacing em up and doing 4 miles in the 100+ heat. It was pretty damn painfull but I did it. :hifive:

Love the looks I get from drivers. Some look at me and wave with total respect on their face. Others look at me like I am an idiot. I kind of enjoy both looks equally.

My legs are killing me right now.

gruecd - nice run. How'd the ITB hold up?

On my end - took father's day off and then on Monday I did the plyo video from Insanity and my 5 year old twins decided to join in. As I was lying in a puddle during the "basketball" drills I look over and see them cranking out the "ski abs" laughing to themselves saying "this is pretty easy daddy!". Little bastards never get tired.

Up early this morning and got in 5 with 3 @ 7:15. Cloudy and 59 degrees made it nice and easy.

Called adidas yesterday to ask about warrantying a pair of shoes I bought in February. The guy on the phone said no problem and they will cover them. The left shoe basically is ripping apart. I liked the shoes and it seemed to be kind of a fluke thing. He said they stand behind their product for two years with the exception of tread wear.

Just figured I would throw that out there for any adidas users.

Regarding shoes, I recently read about too much heel cushioning contributing to Achilles issues -- something that has troubled me for a few years now. I decided not to replace my highly cushioned Asics Kayanos and am going to start training in my Mizuno Wave Elixirs. We'll see what happens.
Interesting. I had some Achilles pain when I went from the Cascadia 7s (typical 10 mm drop) to the Hokas (huge cushioning but only 4 mm drop). Made sense to me as less drop = more stretch on the Achilles. It's part of why I run in Cascadias at least once a week, to give them a break.

Of course I shot hoops for 30 minutes yesterday during my daughter's basketball camp, and now both my Achilles are sore.

Easy 10 miles before work this morning -- 55 degrees. It's been a mild summer for us so far. Here's hoping it holds for a while.
I got ten in this morning too. Unfortunately it was 77 degrees witha dew point of 75. Honestly, the summer hasn't been that bad so far, with only a couple of days in which the low was 79-80. Of course we haven't reached July yet!

Prosopis, nice job in the heat. I can't magine 100+.

gruecd - nice run. How'd the ITB hold up?
Pretty well. Just a couple little twinges, but nothing major. Not horribly sore afterwards, either, which is a good thing. Thanks for asking. I'm really trying to be diligent about doing my hip/core exercises and getting to yoga at least three times per week. I think that's helping.Nice job on your run this morning!

Duck, like you I had pretty significant achilles issues when I tried to go to a lower heel drop. I tried to transition into Newtons (zero drop) from ASICS Gel Nimbus (12mm) and I couldn't handle it, even going extremely slowly in the transition. I have been on a long-term quest to get into less shoe than the tank-like Nimbus's but going with the Newtons was too big of a change. I have been able to transition into the Saucony Triumph, which is an 8mm drop. I also like them because they are about a full ounce lighter than the Nimbus's, so I think i can improve my race times if I can get to the point of running marathons in them.

I switched from the Riders to Precision. Big fan of the Precision.

Annyong asked about the Saucony Kinvaras. I have never run in them but I'd say 70% of the running group I used to run with swore by them. They have quite a cultlike following among shoe geeks.

In the meantime, how about we at least try to find a race for all of us Midwesterners to do this year. That can't be that hard, right?
We likely already have 3 for a Naperville, IL half September 8 15.
Hmmmm...I was hoping for something more centrally located, but that could work. It's the week before Fox Cities, but I'll likely just be pacing, and I wouldn't be "racing" in Naperville anyway. It looks like registration is only $50 through August 12. It doesn't fill up, does it? One of you yahoos have a place for me to stay?
I think it fills up (or comes close) but not until near the end. You have plenty of time to decide.
This thing isn't anywhere near filling up yet, is it?

Grue- I'm sure it isn't. They mention race day registration so that should be a clue. Looking at last year, they only had 600 finishers while the field is capped at 750 so I must have been wrong about them filling up.

This is so confusing. Too much cushioning is bad for the Achillies but apparently a lower heel drop is also bad. I assume there is a strong positive correlation being heel cushioning and size of heel drop in shoes.
