[icon] and beer - you've both mentioned ankle issues. When I do stretching/yoga, one of the things I do is balance on one foot ala 'superman' pose ..arms out, and one leg reaching back. This forces my foot/ankle to do the work of balancing ..the muscles really have to work to keep me balanced. Maybe worth a try?
My PT guy has me doing stuff like that to promote stability for both ankles. Specifically he has me standing on one foot and holding 5-lb dumbbell in both hands fully extended in front of me, and then swinging it back and forth and diagonally. I'll try the superman thing too -- I can do that while hanging out in the office.

Foot doc said a good exercise for what I got is standing on one foot, leaning on a wall and raise up onto your toes. TheDuck had mentioned using a balance board as well. If I ever want to run trails again I'm going to have to do something to strengthen the tendons in my ankles.

I'll try these exercises as well, I got nothing else to do :kicksrock:

Finished up with a 1500yd swim. Piddled for 500 and then did a 1000yd TT, which I managed in 13:56. Pretty meh time, but enough to prove to myself I can do a reasonable job Saturday and not drown.
Calling SANDbagging here! That is a damn quick 1,000 for anyone. I see that tomorrow is only a 600 meter so you should destroy it and the sprint bike and run distances!! I did a slow 1,000 yesterday as my last swim before the 5K Sunday (as part of a taper plan I suppose). As part of the swim, I did 100 yards as slow as I could possibly swim as sort of a mental check-in that I can stay afloat with minimal effort should the going get tough Sunday. Strangely, I still did the 1,000 in 19:05 even with the slow 100 in the middle. :scared: as hell about Sunday but ready to get to it.
I think I'm more excited about your 5k than I am about my race. I've done 3 of these and every time I get to the start, I look at the expanse of water before me, then really, really wonder what the flying #### I'm doing out there. Then, luckily, the gun goes and I turn the brain off for an hour and a half.

And mine is only 600yds. So a whole 8 minutes in the water, give or take.

Oh, and I really wished he had some banked turns in my tri tomorrow, as I'd really like the opportunity to do this.

Hang10 - do well in your race! Will you SandTM the start of a sand 8K? Or take it a bit cautiously so as not to burn out quickly in the soft surface?
This is awesome, just on general principle.

I've been AWOL in here most of this week. My school started back this week and my little girl started kindergarten so it's been a little hectic.

Like everyone else has said, my heart goes out to you Ned. I can't imagine dealing with that, although my parents are getting to the age where it is a concern. Also good to hear some of the walking wounded are healing up in here!

On my end, I'm officially signed up to run the Master of the Mountain trail half in a couple of weeks (aug. 24). A little nervous as this will be my first ever half, so doing a trail half with some elevation might not be the smartest decision I ever made. And my runs since the 5k on Sunday have been CRAP!!! I'm chalking it up to tired legs Sunday and having to go back to work the rest of the week. Hoping to get in 10 good miles tomorrow morning...

Good luck to the racers this weekend!

8.5 this morning before calling it a day.

Suck index was a nice 149...i was soaked a half mile in.Was going to do a 10/6 pace run and cut it to 5 pace miles...just had nothing left after about 7 miles today.

good luck to all racing this weekend.

Giving my legs a rest today. Mind wants to workout though, probably do some strength training when the kids nap. Race in a week so with scheduled off days Tues, Thurs, and fri i think I can justify it. This would make 7 days in a row though... And I plan to run tomorrow as well as a strength training run combo workout monday.

Finished my tri . Good swim - crushed the next guy in my AG ny over a minute, i think. . Bike and run were very subpar. Power was nowhere near what it should have been. Run was very slow. Finished about two minutes slower than last year. 2nd in AG. This year the color was Clemson Orange, so I'm stoked I got a cool tshirt and towe in awesome colors. Other than that the day was meh.

Sorry for the spelling. Darn phone.

I such a typo king, I didn't even see them until you pointed them out. Nice work on limited tri specific training.

Well done, Sand! 2nd in AG sounds fine to this medal monger. I'll be interested to hear why the bike was subpar ...you've been nailing some really strong workouts there.

ASYMCA 8k Mud Run in Virginia Beach

Little info about this race...This is not one of these tough mudder gimmick races. It's definitely a runner's race. It's called the mud run but the only mud is limited to like 5 or 6 mud pits covered with ropes that you have to bear crawl through. Probably 2/3 of the race is in soft sand...they other third is mix of wooded trails, pavement and grass fields. The soft sand is a #####.

Anyways, I finally felt like I was heading into a race healthy. I knew I had a chance to do well but that also added pressure actually go out and do it. This race is a mental grind. I really don't think there's another race I've done where the tempation to give in the pain is strong. It's the kinda race where your heart rate maxes out quickly and it's all suffering from there.

Mile one, they start you on pavement uphill and through a baseball outfield and you finish off the mile with a bear crawl in a mud pit. I sanded the #### out of this mile, as I knew it would be the only one to really open up my stride. - 6:25

Feeling pretty strong but uh oh...my shoe comes untied...then the other one does too...####. Do I stop and tie them? They still feel pretty snug so I keep on charging.

Mile two, is basically just one long stretch of beach with shifting sand with a couple big sand berms. Still pushing the pace but obviously a slower pace. - 8:18

Mile three we head into the woods for some trails and then immediately into a our first stretch of sand dunes. I think the only thing worse than running in soft sand is running in soft sand up hill. - 8:47

My body is screaming for me to quit or stop to tie my shoes at this point. It's also quite annoying having my laces slap against my ankles mile after mile, I might add.

Mile four, we've got another run through the field, a wall to jump, two sets of bear crawls, more trails and yes, more sand dunes. - 8:51 PLEASE BE OVER SOON.

Mile 5 is not actually a mile...more like .6 miles. But it's all hell. Basically all sand dunes, bear crawls and one more big sand hill and the big mud pit. Just horrible. 5:45

Cross the finish line and by the grace God, some how I avoid vomiting. Total time 38:06 (my math might be a bit off on my splits as I'm typing them from memory). 2nd in the 30-34 age group out of 40 and 7th overall out of 1300 runners! Not bad for guy with his shoes untied. I couldn't be more stoked with this result as it was well earned. :banned:

To add to my race comments from yesterday it looks like I had the exact same Strava moving time on a bit lower power than last year. Overall the bike was a bit slower I think due to new cleats that really make me slow down to dismount. I noticed that I may have had some seat issues which caused me to sit a lot lower than I wanted. But still it was a generally poor day on the bike. The run was just unmentionable. Really felt pretty poor the whole way.

Funny story from yesterday - my "arch-nemesis" beat me by about 90 seconds yesterday. He is a guy I go biking with a lot and we're very close in biking skill (I beat him by 1 second on the bike leg). Well, he was beating me on the race until I found out he got a 2 minute penalty for drafting. Bwahahahaha... I've been thinking about the snide comments to throw out on the Tuesday ride. Feel free to feed ideas. It's gonna be a field day.

Now on to waiting to see how 2Y did.

Dang!!! Uber-impressive!!!

Sand - all you need to do is greet your friend as A-Rod.

2Young finished his swim per FB ...anticipating the results and details!

And congrats to Mrs. MAC!

15 miles today. Was drenched head to toe. Could feel my shorts sticking to legs and slapping around like crazy. 10:02/mile.

Hip is quite sore, but not the sharp pain I had last week so I am happy with that.

That's me at about mile 5. Killer run, particularly this time of year.

Went out today and had a nice 17 mile recovery ride with the kids. Felt pretty good. Yesterday's performance is now forgotten - onward and upward.
Do you change clothes for a marathon? I dont think I could have put up with 11 more miles of being completely drenched.

Sorry, must have been from my phone, I could not get to a computer yesterday to do a RR (and thanks for the FB message Saturday night, we were camping and the cell/3G strength was very low and I could not see it or respond).

Swim to the Moon 5K Swim Race Report

The swim took place through a chain of small lakes and canal and one larger lake about an hour and a half from home. Not wanting to get up at 4am to drive out there, a buddy of mine and I went out Saturday afternoon to make packet pick up and camp at a state park nearby (for TM, at Bruin Lake where we camped for DWD the first year). We just made pick up before it ended at 4pm. They already had the buoys in on the lake and the magnitude of a 5K swim really set in and I could only see about .75 miles of the swim route from the beach.

After pick up, it was about 5 minutes over to the campground (it was packed and all but 3 of the 150 spots were taken). Set up went fine and we hung out and had a few beers and some dinner. The weather was perfect and the campground was rocking and we just hoped the hosts and staff would try and quiet things down at a reasonable time. Tried to turn in around 10:30, but the noise continued until around midnight with some still popping up until around 2am. With my nerves on 11, I probably would not have slept any better at home.

Finally did get a few hours of sleep and woke (to the intro to Welcome to the Jungle on my phone) at a little before 6am. Brewed a cup of coffee, milled around for a half hour or so and headed over to the beach where the swim ends to catch a bus over to the start. An unexpected long line had us waiting for the next bus, but we still got to the start about 25 minute before when we thought the first wave was supposed to go off (I was seeded in the second wave). Just after we showed up people were talking about a delay in the start until 8:20am and instead of three waves of around 60, they were going to do a mass start with all 170 swimmer. This was not good for the nerves as the start was at a very small beach and there was very little room before things tightened up and I did not want to thrash at the start of such a long event. A little later we found out that a medical emergency caused the race timing company hired to no show and the had to (successfully) scramble to find a timing company on race day, which delayed the start of the 10K swim pressing back the 5K.

Waiting for the start I paced a bit watching swimmers doing the 10K make the turn and head back out for the second 1/2 of their race. They put us in the, very mucky, water elbow to elbow for the start about 3 minutes before the new gun time. The gun went off and I swear you would have thought it was the start of a 500 yard sprint swim with bodies thrashing everywhere. Making matters worse, was the first 1,000 yards or so was dead into the morning sun making spotting a pain. I waded for about 20 seconds before picking a line on the inside. To keep the 10K swimmers still coming in away from the 5K swimmers, they had a "lane" with orange buoys on the left and yellow on the right and it was only about 20 yards wide. The beating and banging went on pretty good for about 400 yards before it dropped off a bit as the faster swimmers (most of the field) swam away from me. To add distance to get to a full 5K, this leg of the swim went out to a corner of the lake and then turned right to head into a channel. With the sun being so strong, I could see swimmers cutting right at the second to last buoy. Mentally, I said to myself, I came here to swim a 5K so I am not cutting the course. I'd say about 1/2 the swimmers I could see went all the way to the last buoy here.

After the turn, we headed back across the lake and into a channel before swimming under a road through one of those circular metal tunnels (very cool and dark). Exiting the tunnel, it was very shallow and very weedy. About 50 yards from the tunnel was the first aid station (just past a mile). I didn't need a stop, but stood up and grabbed a quick swig of Heed just to get rid of the bit of the horrible lake taste. The next 1/4 mile went through the rest of a channel and through a small lake before another short channel and into the 3rd lake. This lake had no cottages on it and was rung by trees reflecting on the water and was my favorite part of the race. It felt like I was not even swimming. The water was like glass and I only had about 20 swimmers around me at this point (I actually rolled to my back for a second to see the wake I was cutting on the water). At the end of this lake it was back into another shallow and weedy channel (quite a few taller swimmers were walking here, finally a height advantage).

Turning right there was a bridge (for TM, this is the big bridge over the water on Potto you ran over doing the Trail 1/2) where the next aid station boat was. This was just before 1/2 way. I grabbed a quick Hammer Gel and some water and noticed I was at 57 minutes, quite a bit slower than I had expected, but I felt great other the having a few quick calf and feet cramps that came and went off and on. Leaving the aid station I got quite a bit of water in my left goggle. My options to fix it were to either get close to shore or deal with it as I knew there was another stop in about a 1/2 mile. I decided to deal with it a swim on.

The rest of the swim went through another small lake through an opening an then into the big lake where two channels met. I had a very comfortable cadence going and the buoys just kept coming. Somehow, the water got less and less and due to the sun and I had missed the last two water stops and a chance to get the rest out (my eye was stinging like a #####). As we entered the last big lake, meshing of the 2 channels and the lake made for a pretty big chop and the current was running against us. Having been swimming for so long, this kind of made me sea sick.

I could now see the beach about .5 miles away and turn things on a bit with what I had left. It was nice to see I was passing swimmers at this point (heck, it was just nice to see I wasn't last). I swam until I was touching bottom, stood up and even ran through the water and sand across the finish. Stopping the Garmin I saw 1:58:XX which was a bit slower that I would have thought it would have taken, but I still swam the 2nd half a bit faster than the first. But, I felt great. I wasn't out of breath or staggering, or cramping or anything. The Garmin had me at 3.20 miles or a near perfect job of spotting the buoys (I talked to several people that have distance between 3.4 and 3.7). Some of the good spotting probably had to do with how slow I was going as it was part of the plan to really get a good look at the next buoy as I passed the next one to be sure I was swimming a straight line between them.

Its kind of strange. I prepared mentally to really suffer and struggle through the later part of the race. Instead, it was the start that was miserable and the last 2.5 miles I was just swimming. I never broke from free style (other than while popping up to buoy spot) and breathed on my right side the whole way. While I was at the slow end of the pack and about 10 to 15 minutes slower than I'd expected, I could not be happier with the day I had and it has to be one of my favorite days racing. So much so, I can see myself doing it again next year.

:pickle: Sliding in under 2:00 is just awesome.

I'm surprised they bothered. Int his race it is so spread out a stopwatch and paper (or a laptop with excel) is really all that is needed. In mine they did use chips a couple years, but more than anything else to make sure everyone got out of the water.

So awesome, 2Young!!! I'm glad it went well ...delayed start and early mosh pit notwithstanding. I look forward to hearing more (and hearing about Mark's race) at DWD next month.

Marathon training is complete! I finished my last week of hard training despite some Garmin glitches on the weekend. And while respecting SteveC's advice, I stuck with the Higdon schedule I've been using for the weekend sequence.

M: Off

T: 6 miles - tempo (middle dropping from 8:00 to 7:00/mile)

W: 8 miles - moderate pace (7 miles @ 8:08/mi, HR=152)

Th: 7 miles - hard pace (4 miles @ 7:25/mile)

F: Yoga/stretching; 100 push-ups/sit-ups

S: 15 miles - pace (11.5 miles @ ~7:45/mile?)

S: 20 miles @ ~9:00/mile, HR mid 130s?

56 miles for the week. As I put on my Garmin on Saturday while heading out for a western suburb dropoff/run home, I saw "low battery." Grrr. Rather than stressing, I went ahead with some pretty hard pacing, much of it on a nice paved trail (the one we ran, gruecd). Early in the Sunday long run, the Garmin flashed it was out of lap storage. I couldn't seem to get it reset, so I just ran and kept an eye on real-time pace and HR. All in all, better now than mid-race in a few weeks.

Now it's taper time! I'll catch some hill work, pacing runs, and short (400s; 800s) intervals to keep the stride opened up.

Congrats again to this weekend's racers - really solid stuff.

Nice racing 2Young, Hang 10, and Sand! Love reading the RRs.

Not a lot to report here. Unfortunately I haven't been very consistent with my running as life has gotten in the way (and I've been lazy). Got in 6.5 yesterday evening after drinking at a benefit all day. Surprisingly felt really good despite all the booze. Don't remember the pace off hand but managed negative splits the whole way (last mi ~ 7:00-7:10).

Sand - I know it wasn't what you were looking for but congrats on the hardware. This summer has been a wash out here too. My son and I are doing a du this weekend and I'm not expecting great things on the bike.

Hang10 - I can't imagine running that far with untied shoes. That event sounded brutal.

2y2bb - You're nuts. Swimming through a culvert pipe where snakes live won't ever be on my bucket list. 2 hours of swimming is a huge accomplishment.

A couple of the vets warned me about the snapping turtles too. I did hustle though there a bit and hoped both they and the snakes had their fill with the faster swimmers.

Oh, yeah, 2Y, please post the Garmin trace somewhere. I'd love to have a look.
I've never tried to share a workout before. I hit the unlock button and copied the URL. Please let me know if this works: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/357766293
Worked great. Your swim was so completely different than mine. Mine was a straight shot.

Also, looks like the 910 does way better in the water than my 310. Big difference. I had to play with things to get mine to report close to a correct time and distance.

Also, was this a wetsuit swim? The Garmin site lists the water temp at 57 (brrr....)

Awesome races Hang, Sand, 2young. Congrats. I really enjoyed the reports.

I had a crazy week, with two different sets of guests staying at my house, then I had to play parking valet for my niece's bridal shower (the reason I had out-of-towners staying at my house). One of my guests brought along a virus from Atlanta which I picked up and apparently enhanced. It knocked me out saturday and sunday. I tried to run both days but had to cut it short. I felt a little better this morning, but the cold has settled in my lungs, so I had some epic coughing fits on my six-miler. I hope I am normal tomorrow. I really need to start putting in some big weeks before October 13th.

Awesome- I can't wait to hear about this race. Yours and others HR blow me away. My HR is so much higher at slower speeds it freaks me out a little.

Looks like it worked. Can you get the lake and shore on there for perspective? That looks like a crazy swim.
If you click on player and scroll down a bit and click on aerial you can see it on the map and zoom in and out and scroll around. You can get a scope of the scale by looking at the size of the docks, homes and boats.

57 was the air temp at the start (although, I thought it felt a bit warmer). Lake temps varied from 70 to 78 when they were taken a few days before the event. I did not use a wetsuit, but there were probably 30 to 35 that did. I could not imagine spending two hours stuck in a wetsuit. I thought the lake temps were perfect and there were noticeable difference in the feel of the temp along the way. At one point there must have been a spring feeding the inlet as it was the clearest and coolest conditions I swam through. Making my way into the next lake, the temp felt like bath water for a bit before I adjusted.

tri -- Congratulations on making it through a solid training cycle. Enjoy the taper.

2Y -- Nice write-up. I have a hard time imagining that sort of event, not being a swimmer.

MAC -- to your wife.

Hang -- How the hell do you manage to run with untied shoes? Wouldn't they fly off eventually?

10 miles before work today. This is my first week "back" to regular training since spraining my ankle on 7/11, and I went ahead and front-loaded the week like I often do with 10 on Sunday, 5 yesterday, and 10 today. Today's run was definitely a little sluggish due to having taken almost a whole month off, but I did do the last two miles at MP to just show that I could. My ankle is almost completely healed now and I think the running is actually doing it some good, but I'm still paranoid now about watching the sidewalk and trying to plant as easily as possible when crossing roads and stuff like that.

Contemplating shutting things down for a bit. I keep taking a day off here and there, icing, rolling and haven't done anything long or fast in awhile, but my legs won't recover. It's disappointing because I think I was getting in good enough shape to give a run at sub 17 and sub 4:50-5:00 mile this fall but I think I am doing more harm than good running through this. The week I did a 14 miler (with a previous long of 11), followed by 2 rounds of golf and a 5k in one week seems to have messed me up. Every run is a struggle which is physically brutal, plus I know the physical pain is coming so mentally I am dreading it.

Anyone go through these periods? I have gone through period of "dead legs" after prolonged increases in mileage but this is pain and soreness in every part of my legs combine with dead legs.
