Ran a 10k in June (5 Viewers)

Just checking in quickly. Good luck to the racers this weekend, Grue in particular since you've got a lot riiding on the outcome.

Thanks to everybody for the well wishes after my father's stroke (especially Ned). He is doing remarkably well and with the support of my wife and in-laws I am planning to run the marathon next month. It helps that Dad is back home and functioning. His stroke was minor and he has recovered pretty quickly.

I ran a ten-miler at MP this morning and I am planning on 21 on Saturday. My training has been disrupted but not critically. I will be fine.

Very sorry to hear about Tom Brady. Is Midol a banned substance by the NFL?

Good luck racers, all of you. Looking forward to reading some triumphant reports on here! I hope that the temp for Grue stays in the 37.3-41.2 degree range he'll actually race in. ;)

Worrieking, glad to hear things have stabilized with your pops, and that your race is still on.

As for me, enjoying my rest week with just 6 on Tuesday and 8 today (with two good hill repeats thrown in towards the end), but no long run this weekend. Really happy that I recovered quickly from the 20 on Sunday, as I was pretty beat. Maybe there is something to those Epsom Salt baths and a beer post long-run!

I'm looking at 18 hours in the car this weekend for a road trip to Eugene to see the Ducks take on the Vols on Saturday, but hope to get in a shorter run or two between now and Sunday - probably a little time on Pre's Trail, maybe even hit the track (gasp!) for a couple laps around venerable Hayward Field.

Sheesh. I don't know how I missed that. Good to hear that he's recovering well.

And that is the problem with swimming. Refueling standards by a 1 hour effort in each sport:

Running: 300 calories

Biking: 300 calories

Swimming: 7,500 calories
 cycling burns a ton more.
You earn a :whoosh: for this one. :D
Every calculator I've checked shows more calories burned for cycling. Aside from the fact that its a lot easier to ride longer than swim (understand that's besides your point here)

I am still amazed at how conditions affect performance. Yesterday was a 5mi recovery. I ran at 10:30am; it was 84/77 and sunny. I went 9:58/143. :X

Weather is breaking right now.... I can't wait for this stretch of cool weather to get here. Still kind of muggy this morning (67/64), but dang I felt strong. 8mi GA @ 8:30/146. I ran the first 7 @ 8:44/144 and then opened up the last mile just for the hell of it @ 7:00/172.

Incredible to run almost over a minute per mile faster the next day on a longer run at virtually the same HR. Tomorrow is going to be sheer bliss.

I guess I'll have to explain this one. ;-)

I was referring to the hunger factor afterward. Swimming is unique in that it really does something to the appetite. I (and most people) can get off of a run or bike and not feel like they want to eat a rack of lamb like you do after swimming.

Hey tri-man - Any chance you could sell the wifey on going to Erie with us this weekend? Based on the numbers I'm seeing, it's looking less and less likely that registration will re-open on the 23rd. :(

Also looking increasingly unlikely that "just" a BQ is gonna do the trick, which is making me wonder what kind of pace to target on Sunday. Hmmm....

According to Runner's World, approximately 22,000 spots available for qualifiers, and approximately 11,300 people have signed up through yesterday. I'm guessing another 6,000 or so "BQ-5" people will sign up today and tomorrow, leaving less than 5,000 spots for next week.

You'll be fine. Go kick some ### and let the rest take care of itself.

Good luck to all this weekends racers. Looking forward to hearing about some PRs, BQs, and first race reports.

:o That's a ginormous number of folks who were BQ-20 and BQ-10 ...shocking, really. And you're right, after the BQ-5 get registered, it will be a rather small pool next week ...much less stretching to the 23rd.

That said, I doubt I can switch gears on short notice. (Just in case, when are you leaving with your dad?) Heading out right now with my daughter to get our picture taken with the Stanley Cup (courtesy of our bank, a major Blackhawks sponsor). I'll digest the BQ news and think about logistics.

Hopefully the 4000+ people that got in because they couldn't finish last year are mostly from the BQ 0-5 range and demand in that group will be smaller. We know they were bop'ers so they they likely weren't BQ -20 types.

Different for me I guess. but then, I'm the guy who never stops eating. Eating tacos while swimming is a challenge.

Got a DT massage today. Massage therapist about 5 mins in

'Good lord, what the hell have you been doing?!'

I find that it helps to think about something like baseball or listing of the US presidents in your mind.
I usually wear shorts/boxers for these things so they can have easy access to my lower body (pause for snicker and jokes)

But I try to wear a long-sleeve or sweater because these places are usually kind of cold and that way if it gets bad I have something to bite on and stop myself from screaming.

We spent most of the time talking about my awful 'desk posture' and how she has never felt such unexplainable lower body knots in my legs. We both agreed I need another half hour, but she was booked solid today so I took what I could.

I just got hold of Sunday's Raleigh Magnificent Mile Injury Report:

Koby (Questionable - general soreness and being a chicken)

Analysis: Koby experienced terrible soreness and dead legs in August and was on the PUP for 2 weeks. He has been slowly building mileage back up and taking ice baths. Isn't 100% but we may see him start because of lack of opportunities to run this distance again. Start with caution. Count on more manly types in this thread if you need a definite starter.

Was this Dodds' take? If so, I'll need to see Bloom's opinion before I make a start'em or sit'em decision.

MAC's take - Koby has been known to man up and be ready gameday, so while this news is not encouraging we feel comfortable throwing him into our lineup as a flex.

tri-man - Check your email and call me.
As I emailed, I just can't pull it off this weekend for a number of reasons (logistics, financial, ..).

Regarding the numbers quoted by Runners World: I thought a normal year's count was about 27,000 of which 21-22,000 were qualifier slots (the rest were sponsor slots and charity runners). If they added 9,000, shouldn't the available slots then be around 30,000? And for the 11,000 registered to date, I have to wonder if that includes the 4,000 non-finishers from last year who were offered a slot and have already signed up. The RW article mentioned 22,000 slots for this registration period - maybe those are the slots for this two-week period (the fast pace qualifiers and then other qualifiers next week), and they're holding slots for the first come-first served on the 23rd. :loco:

Running an impromptu 5K on Saturday morning. I saw a sign for a nun run for a local shelter that's right around the corner. Figured why the hell not..... Weather forecast is 52/43 at 8AM...... so it should be interesting. :excited:

Following that up with the a 20 miler on Sunday. Can't wait.

Looks like we have a lot of racers this weekend. Grue for a marathon, Annyong and I for a half, Ned and Mac for 5Ks. Anyone else? I'm probably missing someone.
My wife and I have a 5K tomorrow morning too. I'm not really in shape for this, but I also have 5ks in October and November so this is the first of what is essentially a little 5K-focused training cycle. I'm going to be racing all out, but realistically this is more like setting a benchmark for the next couple of months.

He's like the Roddy White of putting one foot in front of the other and gettin it done :football:

Here is an article on the subject.
Interesting.

The main reason for an increased feeling of hunger and weight loss after swimming involves the temperature of the water. Swimming in colder water will burn more calories since the body expends calories to keep itself warm as well as to keep swimming.
Might explain it though. I've been swimming outside and the water is warmer than I would like for laps. It also helps explain why I'm hungrier after biking than running.

I think I'd love to do a mile race. If you run, what time would you shoot for?

Let's see... the cold has officially moved into my chest. I've been hacking up a lung all day long and having to blow my nose every 5-10 minutes. Whole body feels weak/exhausted.... head is pounding from the constant coughing... Yep.... I'm ready to knock this ##### out in 3 hours.

Going home shortly to grab a quick 30 min nap... then wake up and pound a 5hr energy and 2 sudafed, then gear up for the run. Loading some tissues in my pocket I guess. This should be interesting :lmao:

Good luck to all you badasses who are running this weekend. Very eager to see how times come in.

Yikes! Isn't this a no-no? I thought I read that...
Everything I read said caffeine pre run is a good thing... Improved times and breathing function or something. Did a good bit of reason on it. They even suggest some pretty crazy doses (300-400mg). I'm looking at about 200mg from the shot. I'm not super sensitive to caffeine... But open to experiences on why I might wanna avoid lol.

Half Marathon is 8 days away and no real improvement in my heel bursitis, so it appears that I will have to sit this one out. I can walk without a limp and take pain meds but I do not want the after affects for the next month or so with healing...especially with two bowling leagues that I would like to stay in. I am about 10 pounds heavier than I was last year for the 1/2 and to be honest I want to lose about 40 before trying again next year. I considered a cortisone shot but I think I would have to rest it for longer than 1 week before running again. Someone is telling me this isn't my year :/

Above the neck, what the heck.

In the chest, better rest.

Caffeine is fine if you're used to it. I routinely drink half a pot of coffee before long runs with no problems. Particularly for a short race I wouldn't worry about it -- there's just not enough time to develop GI problems in anything less than a half in my experience. YMMV.

If you know that you have an injury, it's never worth it to run a half on it. There's always another half. Take some time off, get healthy, drop the weight you're looking to drop while training*, and do the half some other time.

* I put on about 7 lbs while sitting on the sidelines with a sprained ankle for almost a month, weight that I have yet to shed. It absolutely matters for racing.

They said that 70% of the AVAILABLE spots will go to qualifiers. Start at 36K and take out the ~4600 spots taken by non-finishers who registered, and you get 31,400. Multiply by 70%, and that's how you get to 22,000.

Check this out: http://www.runnersworld.com/races/boston-marathon-registration-opens-today
Ah ..got it. My hope is that when RW says 11,000 have registered, they're including the 4,600 non-finishers (who have registered) ...meaning about 6,400 early qualifiers signed up for the 22,000 slots. Add in BQ-5 and next week's regular qualifiers under that scenario and I have a slim hope. Assuming, of course, I run a BQ race. But I can't control what I can't control --- so let's get on to the weekend racing, boys!

Caffeine should be fine. I'd be careful with the sudafed, though. I took something with pseudo ephedrine once before a run and my HR was racing.

Mega dehydrating too. :goodposting: I'd avoid. The first 1/4 mile is the best congestion reducer (sans meds) IMO.

Nailed it. Surprisingly cake. Huge party along the way. Did Jell-O shot at mile 2 from some hot chick in one of the yard parties. Did a fireball shot around mile 3 from some guy handing em out like a water station

2500 people = slow first mile.. Lotta traffic.

Huge party vibe though... At mile .75 when We passed a house w a giant bouncy castle in the yard and a bunch of people in badass wizard of oz costumes handing out glow sticks I knew I was in for a treat.

Race wise... At mile 2 GF started bonking... Kept telling me to go on. Assessed the situation (fun party vibe, lotsa traffic) and dropped pace to stick with her. I think I earned points for that one. Next race I'm seeing how I do solo. Finished 43.30 which is way slower than I wanted but glad I hung back with the girl.

Had a ####### blast. Hooked. Pounding guiness at Celtic crossing nearby now w Buncha friends. Verdict... Awesome. Cheers to all you guys who ran today and in the AM!
