Ran a 10k in June (7 Viewers)

Finished the Naperville Trails Half Marathon. Looked for Juxt to say hi, but there was about 75 tall skinny guys in greenish yellow tech shirts. So I just said "Hi Eric!" to each one.

60 degrees and rain throughout the race. Finished in 1:50.40 for my first HM. I'll write up a report when I import my Garmin data.

20 miler is done. Felt great for the first 13-14 and then slowly fell apart. The last 2-3 were a grind. My legs became dead weight. Still a solid run and always thrilled to conquer a 20 miler. Finished @ 9:09/146

That put me at 58mi for the week.
That is awesome!!!!

When you say "fell apart" what do you mean? Did your pace get slower or you just were not feeling great anymore?

I got up to late to do my long run this am. I may go out at sunset and just go with no pace in mind. I suspect it will be about 100 out at that time.

Naperville Trails Half Marathon

As Annyong mentioned (Congrats on your race, BTW!), weather in the 50s with a light rain throughout. Pretty good conditions to race in. Didn't meet Annyong but Tri-man came to watch and gave great encouragement, ran my warm up with me, and even held a Gatorade bottle for me at various points in the race! Thanks again, Tri-man!

I wasn't sure what to expect for this one. My PR is 1:27:46 from last year at this event. I haven't been putting in the miles this summer like I have in the past but I've done more speed work than usual. Plan A was to go out at around PR pace (6:42) and see if I can hold on. Plan B was to finish under 1:30.

Garmin data and splits here. (Hopefully that works -- first time I've tried to link.) Brief version: I started out well even a bit below PR pace but about half way through realized I wouldn't be able to hold it and slowed. My endurance is certainly not where it's been in the past. Managed to hang on for Plan B goal. Ended in 1:29:12 which was good for 22nd out of 651. 4th of 57 in AG.

Kind of feel "meh" about this one. This is my second best ever but, of course, one always wants to PR.

Also, this made up my mind about the rest of the season. I'm running a 10 miler with my brother in Washington DC in October and signed up for a marathon in November. I'm 99% sure I'm going to skip the marathon and call it a season after the 10 miler. I also have some time to focus on tempo runs before the 10 miler and I think I'll be able to hang on for that distance at a good pace. There's no way I have enough time to get in marathon shape.

Pace slowed about 15 sec/mi and HR went up about 5bpm. While its not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, its a sign you're body is letting go when you're working harder and slowing down. It wasn't a bonk by any means, but it didn't feel good either.

Anyong - that's a fast debut! Especially considering your issues for the last month or so. Big time congrats!

Juxt - second fastest ever is nothing to sneeze at. Screw that speed work stuff! ;)

Damn I really did want to meet you guys out there too. Had my Mom, Wife and 2 boys come out with their behemoth double stroller, so you may have seen me. I'll make more of an effort next time. Don't sell yourself short on that time. So close.

Me around the 2.5mi mark passing our "home base" bar where our friends were posted up.

The "taking a #### face" was mid-attempt to throw out the devil horns (note the hand coming up). I'm an expert at ruining photos ;) . The two Asian chicks to the left of me were my running buddies... The one in the back w McClure's BBQ shirt is the GF, visibly struggling. :)

The "yellows" and I. McClure's shirt is my girl. Other chick is my best buddies fiancée. Girl taking pics joked with them "now open your eyes really big!" (Asianed joke) so my girl did so. She looks insane. Awesomeness

Congrats icon! Looks like you had a great time!
:goodposting: your gf looks a lot like my lady. Weird.

Great job Juxt and annyong.

I hate hearing about gru's dnf. That really sucks and I know is probably going to stick with him for a while considering the standards gru sets for himself.

Good to see Juxt and to give him race support! We were both hoping to meet Annyong ...Juxt and I stood around looking tall and skinny together, but alas.

gruecd - so sorry to hear about the DNF. You faced a tough gear-up after the ITB issue through late June. Add in a long, miserable commute (stupid airlines), and the cards were stacked against you.

1818 4th of 1600. Took a different approach today never looking at my watch and just going based off feel. Happy I did, attacked more early. Made for an exceptionally challenging final mile physically and mentally. Got that killer instinct Ned always talks about picking two off in the final quarter. Sub 18 may never happen, but that was everything I had today and I ran smart and tough. Very happy.

That is what I suspected. As is said often it is all relative but my definition of "fell apart" means a death walk mixed in with a jog of hate and loathing. :lmao:

There is a lot I like about running and one of those things is the different definitions people have for the same words.

Yeah "fell apart" can mean anything from "slightly slowed from goal pace" to "crawled on all fours begging bystanders for water and a GU".

Oh hell yeah! Great job. And don't you ever say the bolded again. I will say it again. You're a sub 17 runner.

Oh don't worry I will get my edge back in two days and go after 18 again before the year is over. I know me. Satisfaction is short lived. I always want more.

Congrats to the racers this weekend. MAC, Ned and Jux, nice job today. Especially MAC. Agree with others that sub WILL happen. I'm behind and not much time so will have to catch up with other racers next week.

So I did the mile road race today and it wasn't good. I saw anywhere from 5:14-5:16 in the results today (official not up today) and the Garmin had me in 5:11. Any way you slice it, I'm not too happy with this one. I was hoping for low 5s with a shot at sub 5. Really didn't think I was this far off fitness level. Slight uphill start to the race may have taken the sting from my legs, I don't know. And there were a good amount of turns so I don't think it was the fastest of road miles, but still. It was a perfect day for running. 78 and low humidity. I went for 5 minute pace, coming through the half in 2:30-2:31. But then I was gassed. From 800m to 150m left I was really struggling. Will have to go back and look at the Garmin but I wouldn't be surprised if I was at or near 6 even pace at times in that next 600-650 meters. Then I picked it up some and caught a few people at the end, but whatever. 30th overall and somehow 3rd in my age group. But women and 13 year old kids beat me. Not sure why this was so bad. I ran faster as a frosh in HS and came through a mile in a 5k faster LAST YEAR. Oh well. :sadbanana:

Great job everyone!

EX2 Off Road Half Marathon - Quantico VA

My first ever trail race half. To set it up a bit, I'm from Va beach...probably the flattest place on the planet, so running a trail race with a buncha single track, rocky, rooty up and downhill paths was quite a new experience. Friends tell me this race is probably your best half + 20 minutes. Anything under 2 hours is a win.

The race starts out straight down hill a paved road and and right back up after you turn around a cone (kinda a lame start to a great race) for the first .6 and then right into the trails. You can really tell the people that train on this course by the way they attack the downhills. We start down a single track path and I'm amazed at how my natural instinct is to tip toe down and dudes are flying flat out with reckless abandon. My first mile is pretty fast for the course...7:05. We continue downhill to a valley next to a creek that is pretty technical...rocks, roots everywhere. I try to settle in a bit at around a 7:30. The next mile is a real eye opener when we have a very steep incline switch back...I get to the top and damn, I'm winded...run down hill and I'm still sucking air. The one saving grace was that my fitness level was decent enough that when the trail flattened out, I sped up and my heart rate seemed to settle down. The next couple miles are up and down and it's like a freight train of guys behind me running breathing down my neck. Guys are slipping, falling and finally letting guys pass. It was quite intense. Averaging right around 8's for this stretch.

At around the 6 mile point I'm feeling the hills on my legs but overall all pretty good. At this point, I ask guy near me if this pace is sustainable...immediately we run up the steepest hill of the day...I got my answer...NO. These hills kicked my ###. Still, I'm managing to pick the pace right back up when I hit the flat and down hill spots. Feeling pretty good when I get to 8 and still averaging from 8 to 8:30...it's hard by I'm hanging in there. At mile 10.5, it's starts to get a bit sketching. I go to bound up hill over some rocks and roots and I feel a sharp pain in my calf...uh oh....a quarter mile later it's in my other calf...a half of mile later it's in my quad. 2 miles left and I'm worried my legs are going to lock up. I fight through the aches and pains and the last mile is straight up hill...sonava#####. Finish the last mile with a 9:40. Overall time was 1:52:30. Not sure my exact placing but I'm pretty sure I was around 20th out of 250 to 300. Pretty proud of the result as it was way out of my comfort zone.

Side note, went this 3 other guys, two of which have done this race 5+ times. We had a bet, whoever finished last paid the bar tab today...I finished 1 out of 4 and four spent quite a bit of money today. :banned:

Took my first ice bath this weekend after a 15 miler that left me hobbled and limping. I think I screwed myself by running 4 miles a bit too fast(7:45 pace which I know is slow for some of you guys but that is barely off my best 5k time) early in the week and then followed that up with 9 the next night when I wasnt fully recovered. Gave myself two days rest before running saturday morning and then I got hit by a freight train. Things were going great until mile 12. Then it started to fall apart. I had to shuffle sideways up my driveway afterwards. Went for a very easy 10 mile bike ride yesterday which seems to have helped loosen me up. Probably will just swim/bike the rest of the week. I do have a race on saturday that I am registered for through work, so hopefully much better shape by then.
So I threw that plan out the window and went with this as I felt pretty good early on...

Monday-4miles

Tuesday-10 miles

Thursday-16 miles

Sunday-18 miles

Skipped the saturday race as it was an 8k and couldnt care less about that distance.

Have 90.92 miles for September so far now(although that is mainly because my long run for the last week of August fell on Sept. 1st). I am definitely sore, but feel a ton better than many recent days. Ice baths are the worst/best thing on the planet.

Para- Amazing job with the mileage this week. How much speed work are you getting in? An 8K race might do you good.

Koby- Still an amazing mile time to all of us (well, maybe except for Steve!) I guess you can't be surprised: it doesn't get any easier as we get older, you've been coming off of injuries and you've had some life changes making training difficult. Hopefully you can channel your disappointment as motivation and stay healthy for your next race.

Yeah I started seriously (for me) logging miles this year after having my 2nd son in Feb. decided it was time for a lifestyle change. Still have a long way to go but running has changed my life. Running a HM was something I would have never considered attempting, but you guys in this thread have really pushed me along nicely. Gonna sound ####, but my eyes watered a bit after crossing the finish line seeing my family there to cheer me on. Yes I've had a few celebratory beers today.

This sounds like a lot of fun, but I think the chokepoints and having people right behind me in technical spots would really bug me. I can definitely see how trail guys enjoy this sort of thing by themselves though.

Awesome run & write up Hang 10!!!! I am going to guess that second day soreness (DOMS) is going to be like no other 1/2 you've run, but very much worth the pain. The choke points and having people on your back (or tight in front) are not a huge issue if you are running with a pack of folks that get trail running. There is a whole communication etiquette that works. From let people know you are passing to point out hazards to those behind you. I love the solitude of solo trail running, but there is something exceptionally fun about settling into a pack at your pace that makes the time pass.

Wow, what a weekend! Where do I start?

Ned and Para, awesome miles. Great stuff.

Annyong, great race. That was your first half? Really strong. Oh, and Penis!

Koby and Mac. Holy ### you guys are fast. Let me join the chorus of those who think you have a17:00 in your future Mac. Nice Job both of you.

Juxt, anyone who can go sub 90 minutes is smoking. great job. Cool that you and Tri-man met up.

Hang 10., Sounds like a very fun race. Nice job on the placement and especially a nice job on making the fourth place guy pay up!

Grue, so sorry to hear about the DNF. You will get back to Boston.

I ran 21 Saturday, six Sunday and ten at MP this morning. I am stiff and sore, I may take tomorrow off. This should be my peak week before taper, but everything has been thrown off, so I don't know where my milege will end up. 60+, I hope.

Congrats on the result.

Don't sell yourself short, 8 weeks is plenty of time to train for a marathon.
Says the guy who trains for an ultra in 8 days

Again, great racing this week everyone. I didn't realize when I read quickly that most of the Halfs were Trail races. Makes those times all the more impressive.

Sorry to hear about Grue. But like everyone else, confident that he will be back.

I am coming to terms with my race more. 5:16 was the offical time. The top 3 in this race ran 4:09-4:10high and they all have run 3:59.70-4:00.8 on the track. As an aside, it would've been cool to watch this as a spectator. It came down to a sprint and the guy with the best PR (Bobby Mack) came in 3rd of the 3. And a guy I've talked to from my alma mater who is 25 and still running quite a bit ran 4:34 after being a sub 4:10 guy a few years ago. So I do think it isn't the fastest course. But even with that I thought I'd be closer to 5 flat. One thing I am happy to take away from this race is that my calves survived and actually felt pretty good. I thought I'd be a mess post-race and today but no real ill effects. I will do this one again and will break 5 in it some day.

I may do a 5k here and there to get some race toughness back - felt like I gave up a bit in the middle on this one when I knew sub 5 wasn't happening - but the next race I'm keying on is the Manchester Road Race (4.75 miles) on Thanksgiving Day. I have a time from last year to shoot for and know that I have to get the fitness level up or that and me making it up the huge hill in Mile 2 isn't happening.

 He's right, though. 8 weeks is enough although I don't think I could get a time I'd be happy with. I guess the bottom line is I'm just still lacking the desire to run all those training miles right now. Maybe next year I'll feel differently.

Typically my 4-5 mile run is not too far off my 5k pace. Week before last it was just a few seconds above my best 5k pace. I have found the speed work hurts my joints the most, so I dont think I will do any more than one each week.

Some pretty awesome half times this weekend guys, nice work.

Sorry to hear about the DNF grue.

By the way, any reports from the HS boys this weekend from the Dads?
I'd posted a quickie, but here are few more details. Fantastic race on Saturday. 15 team invite (I erred and put 12 in my earlier post) with just one race so there were somewhere around 350 to 400 kids racing a single event. My son started out with the same pack of three that have all been racing for 7th, all three went 5:55 for the first mile (hilly course). Somewhere around the 1.5 mile mark, something clicked and he started stalking #6 and left the other 2 behind. He found and passed #6 just past mile 2 and they jockeyed (in a good pushing each other sort of way) for the rest of the race. #6 distanced himself a bit in the last 1/4 mile just out doing my son, so he was 7th and will be varsity going into the next race. Top 7 score in this event and he finished with an 18:55 good for 30th place OA (getting both a medal & a t-shirt). His team finished a close 2nd to an outstanding school. Coach cannot recall having 7 runners sub 19 this early in the season and coming off 3 races in 8 days (including the suffer-fest in the heat on Tuesday). I suspect he is done with the go for 7th pack and will be dueling with #6 (a senior) going into the next race. 3 of his school's top 7 are just sophomores including their #1 who got 3rd OA on Saturday.

Should be a good couple of years coming up for both him and his team.

Did you do anything to embarrass him this time?

I love when I come in here on Monday after not being able to keep up through the weekend and not only see a bunch of great results, race reports, and training....but then somebody sums them all up in one post and I can just give it a big 'ole :goodposting:

I'm especially enjoying the trail races more frequent appearance in race reports around here.

For me, it was ultra-road tripping and ultra-tailgating this weekend - 18 hours in the car to Eugene and back, and 10+ hours spent at Autzen Stadium on Saturday. Throw in some time at the campus bars, and it was like a fartlek workout during a 30 miler for my liver. Just to cap off the tribute to debauchery, my girlfriend and I drove 30 minutes out of town Sunday to have breakfast at the Dexter Lake Club - the Animal House "Do you mind if we dance wif yo dates?" spot. While I know and have been to where just about every other scene in Animal House was filmed during my time in Eugene, this was a first.

But I did salvage my running weekend a little yesterday - shook off the punishment from Saturday's ultratrailgating and hit Pre's Trail for 5 miles. Then on the way back down to Cali we stopped in Ashland, OR, where the Pine to Palm 100 miler was going on. The race is put on by Hal Koerner, who is a Hardrock 100 and two-time Western States 100 champ (along with about 20 other 100 mile podium finishes). For my buddy Jim and I it also happens to be the "backup plan" 100 miler if the lottery gods aren't good to me (States) or him (Hardrock). We rolled in to town just in time to watch the final 5 finishers make it in under the 34 hour cut off. I even had a chance to chat with Hal for a couple of minutes, and told him I just might be one of those final stragglers this time next year. Nothing like the finish line of a 100 miler to get you inspired.....

Training for a marathon at the end of next month, my first ever. Got the long training run under my belt yesterday. 20 miles in 3 hours 40, certainly not going to win any awards but I've really struggled over the summer with the long runs in the heat so very happy to get to the 20 mile distance. Feeling it today though

Huh, other than balls out sprinting to get to the mile markers and standing on a picnic table to see over a hill to watch for a bit, nothing I can think of. I was out dueled by both Cow Bell Dad & Vuvuzela Dad (seriously) Why Are You So Slow Yelling Mom was there too.

Hang 10 - Welcome to the dark side. Trail running kicks ###.

Para - What are you training for again? Sorry I missed it somewhere. Great mileage!

Please up your game and bring us more good stories. Cow bells are cool by the way. Let's here more about Why Are You So Slow Mom.

Congrats on getting that behind you. Really good sign that you feel fine today.

Got in a 10 miler in 2h8m yesterday. 5.5 miles up the easiest part of the Shut-In trail with 1475 ft of climbing and then 4.5 miles back down the paved parkway. The steady road descent is less pounding and safer than the trail descent. Lots of walking on the way up.

Good luck, dewmass! If you trained in the heat, hopefully a cooler race day will provide an immediate boost. Which race will you be running?

Latest news for Boston registrations: I read that they have about 5,000 slots for the 'regular' qualifiers this week. The BQ-20, -10, and -5 groups last week each took about 5-6,000 slots, so it's not looking good for registration to continue into next week. It would be helpful to at least know before my race on Sunday. If Boston is filled, I'll run a more aggressive race because (a) I can do so without worrying about downside risk, and (b) I will have a shot at an AG award, which would be neat to do in a marathon (about 1,000 runners last year). :medalmonger: This will be my last marathon (again). I find the training is too much of a hindrance for other events that I enjoy. Ironically, I might at some point still go longer with an ultra of some sort where it's truly an endurance event rather than racing for time. But I'll re-retire from marathons.

Very cool. Being part of a good team will be a great experience for him. They will grow into one of the local powers it sounds like.
