Would anyone consider signing up for the 2015 miles in 2015 challenge?

Not sure if we could get Steve to cut back that much, but for the rest of us?
Explain this challenge to me please.
I may be oversimplifying this and please, FUBAR, jump in if that's the case but I think...I think...you try to run 2,015 miles in 2015 ;)
 yep. I'm thinking I'll do

201.5 km swim

2015 miles bike, averaging 20.15mph

2015 km run

PSA: if you get an electronic pulse massager, make sure when you turn it off, you turn the power intensity the right way.

The power intensity dial is the off switch, just turn it to zero. I had it in my legs at 4. Went to turn it off, turned it to 10 instead.

Now that you mention it, this probably could be used for that too.

2014 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved? Mixed bag I guess. I don't really think I took that next step or increased my volume that significantly. More than anything I continued to progress. I had gains and some set backs (more on that later). Also, had a goal 2 years ago of breaking 40 in the 10K, 90 in the half and 19 in the 5K. Knocked out the last 2 of 3 this year for the tri-fecta.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2014: New PR's in the half marathon ( 1:29:25), 5K (18:49) and 50K (4:34:08).

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race): I suppose my proudest moment was finally breaking 19 minutes in the 5K since it had taken me 2 years to get that monkey off my back.

A race disappointment during 2014: Not sure I had any races that big disappointments but I mentioned set backs earlier and I'll expand upon that. Not sure if anyone of you remember when I mentioned going to see a cardiologist late spring because of some irregular heart palpitations during hard workouts. Anyways, that put a huge damper on my training this summer and gave me tons of anxiety. I hadn't mentioned it but I finally got diagnosed with SVT (super ventricular tachycardia) last month. I have episodes during training monthly to once every 2 months. Doctor was pretty confident it's not life threatening or anything but it's still weighs on my mind and has affected the way I train. There's a procedure that he offered that could possibly cure the problem but it's optional. It's a lifestyle choice as he called it. If I can live with the condition, that's fine but if it starts to really become a nuisance I can opt for the surgery. All that being said, I still had a pretty good year but it's been tougher than ever before to push myself and train properly. At least now I know I'm not putting my life at risk when I get my heart rate up. So I'm dealing with it...for now.

Your most memorable workout or race for the year: Of course my most memorable at this point is the 50K I ran last week. There's a lot to remember when you're running for 31 miles.

Favorite “go to” workouts and/or routes: 6 mile hilly trail loop my buddy and I ran almost every Thursday. Love that trail.

Total training volume during 2014: Looks like I will fall just shy of 1400 miles which is about a 200 mile PR. Less running that I would have liked but hey, still a PR.

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2014: Gotta be Ned's transformation. Definitely inspiring to see a break through like that.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys): Dunno...I got bit by a dog and chased by a dog 2 other times.

Goal(s) for 2015: PR the marathon (and BQ of course), run a beer mile (might be attempting one Jan. 1) and of course, PR everything.

See ya, 2014. :bye:

Hang10 - good to know that you at least got answers for that condition. Despite that, you really did have a fine season.

Christmas gifts: Advanced Marathoning, new lightweight windbreaker jacket, bright glow in the dark shoelaces.

I'm getting in a few runs while on a driving tour down south ...Nashville, Montgomery AL, Gulfport MS, and New Orleans tomorrow. The AL and MS runs were my first in those states. Gulfport this a.m. was awesome - 2.5 miles along the gulf coast then 2.5 back running IN the gulf ...running thru the sand bars during low tide and high stepping the water in between (as much water as land). I ran barefoot and have some nice blood blisters as a result.

Other big highlight: Sand and his wife stopping in Montgomery on their way north and having dinner with mrs. Tri and me. Great to see him again!

I was wondering if anything had been made of those episodes you had. Glad its relatively minor and hope it stays that way. Great sign you can run a 50K with no problems!

Awesome dinner. I hope we can return the favor in Chicago sometime. Wish we have stayed longer.

2014 Year-end Report

Your goals coming into the year, and were they achieved?

Goal(s) for 2014: To be sitting in Auburn again next December for the WS100 lottery. So that means (getting into and) completing a 100K in 16 hours or a 100M.
Oh yeah! The 100M goal was accomplished, and I was sitting in Auburn again in 2014 for the Western States lottery.

New accomplishments or PRs in 2014:

Obviously my first 100M tops the list. But the 6:03:01 50K PR in the Marin Headlands in July was pretty sweet, too.

Your proudest and/or best race (or segment within a race):

Pine to Palm 100 Mile Endurance Run. It's a day, ok day and a half, that I'll never forget.

A race disappointment during 2014:

The biggest disappointment for me was obviously not getting into Western States for the 2nd year in a row. Not getting into Miwok for the 2nd year in a row was also a bummer. The only race disappointment was the 10K Turkey Trot in that I was looking forward to pushing to see what I could do and tweaked my calf 2 miles in and had to gimp my way through the rest of it.

Favorite “go to” workouts and/or routes:

Moving to Novato I had to find all new trails, and was really happy with what I found around Mt. Burdell - a 1,500' climb with a nice section of single track and then some steep fire roads near the top. I've climbed that thing and touched the rock at the peak 20 times since moving here in June. Next would be the tempo efforts I've been doing the past month or so up the first 1.7 miles of that climb from the trail head to a gate, with 450' of elevation gain. I look forward to making serious progress on that workout in 2015.

Total training volume during 2014:

332:03:54 training time (pr by over 65 hours)

1,663 miles (pr by 347 miles)

212,157' of elevation gain (pr by 72,000')

Best memories of other guys’ training or races in 2014:

Probably Ned's training and recent marathon. Dude just crushed that entire cycle and it was great to see it pay off. And Steve winning a freaking marathon after calling his shot.

Oddest or funniest experiences (yours or one of the other guys):

Seeing things after midnight around mile 56 (robots walking backwards, people leaning into cars that weren't there) is high on my list. And was Annyong's chicken breast run this year or last year?

Goal(s) for 2015

To carry on the momentum I have going after what has been by far my most consistent year of running, and continue to increase my volume. But most specifically, it's getting into Western States for 2016. Since I can't totally control that, it's another Western States qualifier (Quicksilver 100K in May in 16 hours or less) and very likely another 100 miler in the Fall.

ETA Miles by discipline (likely year-end)

Swim: 128, likely end with 130 Won't hit the goal of 150 Bike: 3099, (3160)

Run: 1360, (1425)

Total: 4587 (4715)
With 5.5 intervals miles today; actual distance for the year:

Swim: 130

Bike: 3154

Run: 1430

Total: 4714

Finished this year with 1401. Been sick the last week or so.

Goals for 2015 are simple, get back into it. I seriously lost my mojo after the 50k in February and just struggled the rest of the year. I have 2 big race in March that should at least keep me motivated until then.

How About a New Year's Day Challenge?

So, with all this running I'm planning on doing this year, I've decided to set up what I call:

A Buck A Mile.

Here in Kansas City, there is a program set up through our local food bank called BackSnacks. Basically what they do is pack backpacks full of food and hand them out every Friday to kids who qualify for the program. A lot of these kids rely on the school breakfasts and lunches to get their meals for the day, but when school is out on weekends they have nothing to eat. This program is designed to help them through the weekends so they can have basic food. When I look at my own kids, and think about all of these children that have literally no food to eat, it breaks my heart. More info here in case you are interested.

My plan this year is to have family and friends donate to the cause by pledging a Buck A Mile for every mile I run in my major races. So for me, it would be the Half Marathon I am running this spring and then my first Full Marathon on the fall. Now, people can certainly pledge more or less, but 100% of the money will be given to the BackSnacks program.

I'm in the process of putting together a simple website now where people can donate through paypal, or they can send the money to me or the food bank. Still working out those details.

Anywhoo, since the race is not until April, I figured - "I'm gonna run tomorrow on New Year's Day. Why not kick it off now myself?"

So here is my plan: For every mile I run tomorrow, I will donate $10 to my local Harvesters Back Snack program. I have no idea how many miles that will be (depending on my consumption tonight :banned: ). I figure it's going to be somewhere between 6 and 12.

Here's my challenge to you guys: Go on a run tomorrow. Pledge a donation for yourself to go to your local food bank. Post here when you are done and let's see how much dough we can raise for some hungry kids.

Thanks to all you guys for great advice and inspiration. It's because of this thread that I am still running and am in a position health wise to do something like this. Here's to a great 2015 for all of you. :hifive:

I had a nice run on the treadmill this afternoon. I included 2 separate miles at 5K pace (6:00) with 1/2 mile jog in between. I don't think I've run a 6 minute mile in a long time, maybe since last spring even. I expected to be quite gassed at the end but it wasn't really that bad. My heart rate only got up to about 92% of max.

My 5K training season officially starts tomorrow so I hope this bodes well.

Happy New Year everyone!

Officially finished the year with 1,063 miles. The last six in yak traks.

Why they he'll didn't I get these things sooner.

Finished the year with 1206 miles

Oct - 132

Nov - 138

Dec - 162, last two weeks 40 and 42 miles

So...I am in very early stages of thinking but do the distance guys think I can get in shape for the Pittsburgh Marathon on May 3rd? I was thinking spring would be for Halfs and that still may be the better idea, but I'm kicking around the idea of the latest possible Marathon to do in '15 in an effort to BQ for '16. March is definitely out. April possibly but I like the sound of May 3rd better and know some people in the Burgh. I recall the fall Marathons like Chicago/Hartford being too late to BQ for the next spring. What say you?

Plan on it, but sign up for a checkup half in early March to be sure.

I'm assuming you're familiar with Pittsburgh, but if you're not beware of hills. Don't know the course, but I'd expect a lot of them. May not be a BQ friendly trek, but more of a tune up for a real BQ in Fall.

I'm still wrapping my head around one marathon so two in 4-5 months sounds dreadful. Which is why keeping the spring plan at a Half and other races and one of the fall Marathons may be a better idea.

Yes, you're such an excellent runner, I think you could BQ on your first attempt. That's assuming you train right and stay healthy, of course.

I considered running the Pittsburgh Marathon in 2012 (I had family there at the time) but decided against it due to the hills that Mac mentions. (BTW, I ended up getting my BQ that spring in South Bend --your old stomping grounds.)

The cutoff for Boston is in September. I know Grue has run the Erie Marathon because it's a flat course held on one of the last weekends before the deadline.

Ran some intervals yesterday(10x400) and I think I am regretting it. Haven't done any speed work since last April'ish due to the hamstring. Now that I feel it has sufficiently healed, I was looking forward to reintroducing so much I got carried away. Probably should have gone a lot easier first time out. Was just so excited to not feel that pain anymore. I did not reinjure the hamstring, but my hip sure does feel pretty awful.

Will be a lot smarter going forward.

koby - May gives you plenty of time to train! You've got tons of talent - I don't doubt for a second you can BQ. How old are you?

para - Sheesh, 10x400 is a tough workout to start out on! Maybe cut that in half (5x400) and work your way up to 10 repeats?

--------------------------

This past month reminded me why I've considered retiring from marathons after I get into Boston. Racing a marathon really takes so much out of me. I'm ready for this crappy running to be over with.

Looking at halfs around Memorial Day/early June. Give me some time to build miles through the challenging conditions of the next two months, start one cycle around March 1 and have time for another mid-late April. Mix in a 10k trail race in February, 5 mile road road in March, then another trail race in April before starting cycle two.

After a relaxing/rehabbing six weeks it's time to get after it again :football:

Quick update at 3 weeks post surgery:

Calf pain continues to slowly decline. I can now bound up stairs 2 at a time when I'm not thinking about it. Still have tingling sensation in foot that moves around and the intensity & location in the foot varies from day to day. The first minute of the day after sleeping is about the only time that there is any calf pain and it's minor at that.

I'm doing PT and that's going good with typical PT stretching/stretching with very little pain. No big deal at all. Now walking up to 20-30 minutes at a time. After this time, there is some soreness, but not a huge ordeal.

Basically, the last 1-2 weeks are lots of tingling / shock sensation that improves from day to day. Wound site looks good now and I should be good to get in the pool next weekend.

Still looking at mid-Feb return to jogging/running.

Lastly, I've successfully put on a bunch of lbs. since surgery. None of it muscle. :sadbanana:

So returned yesterday from an 8-day driving trip down south. (For the record, my wife doesn't want to drive unfamiliar roads, and she's the world's worst navigator.) I got in four neat runs - 4-5 miles each, all at an easy pace. A run in Nashville that included parts of the Vanderbilt campus; a run to explore Montgomery, AL, the impressive collection of state buildings and some of the history; the neat beach run along/in the Gulf of Mexico in MS; and another exploration type of run through interesting Natchez, MS. But I've also picked up my wife's bad cold, and the weather back in Chicago today turned snowy and now bitter cold. This'll mess up training over the next week or so.

Godspeed brony.

My wife is 6 days post ACL surgery now, seems her experience is similar. Not fun but taking the longview.

Workouts 571
Hours 521
Distance 4786.28
Calories 477913

So, my New Years Day Challenge run didn't happen. Apparently I jinxed myself by saying how healthy I had been through all of my running. Ended up at the ER for most of the day with some stomach and intestinal issues. And the part that sucks is it was not related to any drinking. Had been feeling bad for a week or so, but it all came to a head New Years Eve night. Luckily nothing serious, but enough that I was off the streets for a few days. Finally got a short 3.5 mile run in yesterday, so everything looks to be back on track. Looks like I'll have to do my fund-raiser long run this weekend.

Hey Gang. I've been pretty absent. My calf is still a bit sore, but much better than 10 days ago. I feel like the marathon in two weeks should be fine if I haven't over-tapered dealing with the calf. Again, my expectations for the race are low, so just let me finish and I will be happy.

Tri, I hope you enjoyed the gulf coast. Wish we could have got together but I wasn't around (went to a family event in Pennsylvania).

So last year I was thinking about trying for the fifty states club (a marathon in all 50 states). I doubt I can finish that with my hip issues, but like Tri, I am going to see how many states I can actually run in. I added Pennsylvania to the list with a four-miler on a nice trail on New Year's eve.

From memory my list currently is:

Alabama

Arkansas

California

Colorado

Florida

Georgia

Illinois

Iowa

Kansas

Louisiana

Minnesota

Mississippi

Missouri

Nebraska

New Mexico

Ohio

Pennsylvania

Tennessee

Texas

I shook off the NYE/Rose Bowl tailgate festivities (and 14 hours in the car over 3 days) with 5 easy miles on Saturday and then a loooong 20 miler yesterday with over 3,600' of elevation gain that started with an 8 mile, 2,500' climb up to Mt. Tam East Peak. It was my first 20 miler since August (pre-100M), which felt good to get done. I'm definitely feeling that 3,600' of descent today, quads are pretty sore. But it was nice to wake up this morning to that "good sore" feeling again for the first time in awhile.

Worrier - come by NC before July. If you enjoy running up/downhill in sand, it doesn't get much better outside of the sleeping bear dunes.

Yeah, too bad we couldn't connect while I was in the neighborhood! I think my state total is at about 27 now. I've also picked up seven other countries (Canada, Mexico, Cuba, England, France, Netherlands, and Switzerland).

How can I get picked to participate in studies like this? http://zelle.runnersworld.com/run-matters/is-it-ok-to-have-sex-the-night-before-a-big-race?adbid=10152531862341987&adbpl=fb&adbpr=9815486986&cid=social38263127

I have no problem with this:

Obviously, thats not going to put a big dent in your precious glycogen reserves. However, if you go for a marathon romp - or let it cut into your all-important sleep time - it definitely can drain your energy levels. Keep it short and sweet. Dont participate in an endurance event before the endurance event, Levitt says.

Lots of good advice in that article for you, Ned:

If you know you’re prone to post-sex soreness and irritation, Levitt recommends hopping in the shower or bath afterward. It will help normalize your ######’s pH, which can get thrown off from contact with his manpart. DESITIN diaper rash cream can also ease vulvar irritations, Levitt says. It only takes about six to eight hours to calm things down, making it ideal for the night before a race. (It’s dual purpose. Use it in the a.m. to prevent thigh and sports-bra chafing.)

23 states plus dc.

Your country list is better than mine.

Canada, Iraq, Afghanistan.

Hey, guys. Got back yesterday afternoon from an awesome island vacation in Sardinia. It's winter there, so it wasn't warm enough to do the whole beach thing, but it was still an amazing experience and a great time. Between the jet lag and the partying, I didn't get a chance to run much, but I did get out a couple of times. We're hoping to go back next summer (2016), and if we do, I definitely want to take along my trail gear and head out for some running in the mountains.

Anyway, less than 15 weeks until Boston, so I need to get my #### together and start training. Like tri-man said, it's cold as hell in the upper Midwest right now, so I'll be hitting the Pettit tonight for an easy hour or so on the indoor track. Definitely a nice luxury to have here in Milwaukee...

Not to derail the thread but January 13th will be that "bad sore" feeling :football: :o :football:

I would expect a better selection of pics and I ain't talking about some lame ### trail :excited: ;)

Greetings gents. New year is here and I've managed to get a little in - two runs the last two days. Rained massively hard this weekend (like 3-4 inches), so kinda stuck doing things around worktime. Down to a 14 hour day yesterday and perhaps only a 12 hour day today, so workload is getting a bit better. Hope to get a nice, cold ride in this weekend.

So, Grue, why did you pick Sardinia? I've never really considered putting that on my travel list.

One of my girlfriend's best friends from Poland lives there with her husband. She hadn't seen her in years, so she wanted to go visit. Plus we had a free place to stay and a car to use, so our only expense was the travel and the booze....lots and lots of booze. What's interesting is that her friend speaks only Polish and Italian, and her friend's husband only speaks Serbia and Italian. My girlfriend speaks Polish and English, and I obviously speak English and a little bit of Spanish. So if her husband and I wanted to talk, it needed to go through both of them first.Actually hoping to go to Poland this summer to visit her family and friends. That should be fun, too.

I shook off the NYE/Rose Bowl tailgate festivities. But it was nice to wake up this morning to that "good sore" feeling again for the first time in awhile.
Not to derail the thread but January 13th will be that "bad sore" feeling :football: :o :football:
We'll see! I can't wait to get into Dallas on Sunday night to begin the next round of festivities.

Alrighty, boys...Let's talk marathon training. I'm for the most part recovered from my 50K and this week I'm jumping all into training for my marathon in mid-March. I've decided to customize my own plan and skip the popular online training programs. Here's what I'm thinking... My mileage maxed out in the mid 40s per week training for my 50K, so I don't think I can up much past 60ish miles a week due to time constraints. So I'm going to add about 3-5 miles a week until about mid-February. I'm going to do a couple doubles but the main focus is going to be adding leg strength early and then move to adding speed and paced runs later. I'd like to hit 20 miles 2 or 3 times. Anyways, here's what this week looks like and it's the basic template for the next 5 weeks. I'd love to hear your thoughts or suggestions.

Monday

AM: 6.35 miles (easy)

PM: 45 min fitness class

Tuesday

AM: 3:44 miles (easy)

PM: 6.2 miles (Treadmill hill workout...60-90 seconds repeats @ 6-7%)

Wednesday

AM: 5 miles (easy)

PM: 45 min strength training (squats, core, pull ups, push ups and dips)

Thursday

AM: 3.44 miles (easy)

PM: 6 mile trail run (moderate)

Friday

AM: 4 miles (easy)

PM: 45 min fitness class

Saturday

AM: 16 mile trail run (easy to moderate)

Sunday

OFF

ETA: total mileage for the week 50 miles

TIA

Tried to like this but quota reached.

I started half ###'d last week, full on this week and am kinda winging it as well for a March 7th marathon. I like the above...a lot

Nice. I thought I remembered someone else doing a March marathon. Looks like my race is 2 weeks after yours. Good to have another FBG 10k'r on a similar training cycle.
