Check out some of the Triathlon Lab models. While I am a happily married man, I get the privilege of training and racing with one of the models on a regular basis.
Understandable, bud. You've had a tough week.My half today sucked ###.Kinda have some stuff going on, so I haven't had much of an appetite lately, and I think I've only slept 10 hours the past three nights combined. Was hoping to do 1:30, but the pace felt uncomfortable from the beginning, and my legs were getting heavy by mile 4-5. Throttled it back and went to survival mode, finishing in 1:37.

But on a more positive note, our Fall 50 teammate, Tim, finished his first-ever marathon yesterday with a time of 4:22:40. Pretty cool.I ran my half on Sunday and had the same goal as gruecd and missed it as well.It didn't help that we got stuck in traffic and arrived at the starting line 5 minutes before the race started. My half today sucked ###.Kinda have some stuff going on, so I haven't had much of an appetite lately, and I think I've only slept 10 hours the past three nights combined. I finished in 1:34 which was about 90 seconds faster than last year (and included a 30 second pit stop around mile 6) so I can't complain. I lost to the guy running in a pink tutu but at least I beat the guy wearing the chicken suit! Now it's only 9 weeks to my first marathon.Don't worry. I almost got Furleyed. I beat a 14-year-old by two seconds.I lost to the guy running in a pink tutu but at least I beat the guy wearing the chicken suit!

It's go time PG! FWIW: putting 1:34 into RW's pace calculator suggests you should be shooting for a 3:16 marathon. Having never run a marathon before my goal was going to be 3:30 since 8 min pace is pretty comfortable for me. Then I realized that 3:15:59 gets me into Boston so that became my tentative goal. I've been doing my long runs between 8s and 8:15s so I think the Boston time may be doable especially in Philly which is one of the easier marathon courses out there. This week is an easy week for me but next week is my first 50 mile week and first 20 miler.Don't worry. Whew! What's your goal time for the marathon? I just got my workout schedule for the next four weeks, and I've got some tough workouts ahead of me. One of them has a 10-min w/u, then 6x5 minutes at 6:50 pace with 5-min recovery, then another 25 minutes at 8:15 pace.

Running shoes should typically be a minimum of a half size larger, and for some shoes, a full size larger than your normal shoes (you need room in your toe box for running). I've used ****'s Sports, roadrunner sports, shoebox and others, but always just google search to find the best deal after considering shipping. It looks like you're going to have difficulty beating this deal, with free shipping.prosopis said:I have been trying to figure out the shoe thing with out going into the store to be fitted. Reason being is I cant really afford shoes and I am trying to find them as cheap as I can. If I go to the store and get fitted I will feel bad if I dont buy them there.
I got runners world magazine out of the library and did the wet test they reccomended. Turns out I am a normal pronator. They then had a list of shoes for someone like me. I settled on this one.

Does anyone here know of a place on line to get the best deal? Should I order the same size of shoe I usually wear? I wear a 9 in hiking boots and sneakers. I dont really have dress shoes. I have cowboy boots but I dont know what size they are.
Thanks for any help.
Tri-Man; be careful putting on large miles in the Cumulus, after running on Nimbus. I have been running on both for the last decade+, but have learned that when I'm having hard training weeks that I ache much more if I wear the Cumulus, then the Nimbus. My last two, and three of my last four injuries have also occurred while wearing Cumulus. I currently only use the Cumulus for short recovery runs, and the Nimbus for all speed and long runs (I only have three run types, as I run 3x per week). Being lighter, the Cumulus feel great, but they don't have as much shock accentuation, and have a narrower platform = just be careful.tri-man 47 said:New shoes! Replaced my Asic Nimbus with some Asic Cumulus 9's (on sale, versus the 10's, at Sports Authority ...nice price under $70). Adding it up, my Nimbus's (Nimbi?) had just over 500 miles on them - right at the top end of the recommended range. They were starting to feel pretty "dead." Did 6 miles in the new shoes this morning and they felt fine. Great swim yesterday with a timed 30 laps (1500 yards) at 29:51 in the middle of the workout.

I have few fears, but have had an irrational fear of needing an appendectomy prior to a game/event (I've had it since Junior High). Take your time recovering, and make sure those around you spoil you rotten.Furley would probably kick my butt today.I bet he'd kick your butt today thoughBassNBrew said:Not as good as my 24:59 5k.prosopis said:Is that good?3mi in 25:58 today.I have few fears, but have had an irrational fear of needing an appendectomy prior to a game/event (I've had it since Junior High). I hit the gym monday nite for the first time in months. Worked the ads extra hard so I can't distingish between the surgery pain and the muscle soreness. The pain medicine hasn't helped in that regard so I assume it's muscle soreness. Feel pretty good otherwise so I'm going to get a half day in today (self-employed).On a better note, I just bought a Cervelo R3. Should have it Monday. I'll post a pic when I get a chance. My wife and I buy from Holabird SportsTheir prices are a tad better than Road Runner Sports and they only charge $5 to ship no matter how large your order is.prosopis said:Does anyone here know of a place on line to get the best deal? Go to Walmart, Target, JC Penney Outlet, etc, any of these types of stores that are pretty much self-serve in their shoe department. Heck, even Payless Shoes is somewhat self-serve. You'll usually find Al Bundy hovering over you at Footlocker or other specialty store, so keep your shopper's-guilt out of there.prosopis said:I have been trying to figure out the shoe thing with out going into the store to be fitted. ), but I'm trying to watch expenses while preparing to move. I currently wear Brooks Adrenaline GTS 6, and would like to get the next model in line, GTS 7, but the prices haven't dropped since the GTS 8 came out. That's how I got the GTS 6 (GTS 7 came out, GTS 6 = half price). I'm at the point of "eff it, I'll just get the GTS 8 since the prices aren't much different", but I have to re-determine my size. Stupid tags in my current shoes have worn out and I can't read 'em!!
Taking this a slightly different direction, why not try eBay? Running is one of those things where folks will drop big $ on gear, use it once, hate it and try to mitigate things by selling them. I got a pair of $150+ trail runners for 5-bucks when I wanted to give some a try. My shoe size is the same as a dress shoe in both Asiscs & Brooks running shoes. I agree with the advice above, go get fitted at a chain store and just don't buy'em. As for socks, I find the brand doesn't matter as much as how they are made. I need a double-walled synthetic. As for an update, I'm still doing 10 to 12 hour work days but had time Tuesday to swim and challenged myself to swim 1/2 hour straight without rest, which I did. I have no idea how far I swam as I didn't feel like counting. The reason I challenged myself is that I'd like to move up and do an Olympic Tri some time next year and this was a nice start towards this.I also got in a 10K yesterday and it was a bit of a struggle to do it under 50 minutes, but I did. As I thought, the stamina was there 110%, but the legs just are not right. . I find it weird us not doing this one together and I and extemely jealous of how much training she is doing (she did her last 10-miler yesterday). My competitive side will just have to get over that she'll have done 1 more than me.My first marathon was last year too, but harder to compare with you since I was a couple of years out of fighting shape going into it. I share my 1/2 marathon PR to the second with gruecdPeter G: For my first marathon last year, I was doing comfortable runs at about 8:00/miles and peaked with a 50 mile week. I ended up at 3:46 on a course with rolling terrain that I hadn't prepared for (other than a quad breakdown, I was on track for a 3:30ish). So my sense is 3:15 will be a challenge ...a good challenge, but a challenge. You're intermediate races have been faster than me, so I've got faith in you.
(again, 3 years ago), but did the marathon training last year with no base. Put in no more than 28m weeks, had several long runs where I felt great and on target for a 3:45. Even felt ok and on target for the first part of the race (NYC) but the lack of base killed me in the last 10k and I slumped in to 3:53 (happy enough with that, all things considered).I would imagine with what you're doing, a 3:30 should be a backup goal with the 3:15 as your target. As close as you'll probably be, you might as well go for Boston and let it all hang out- worst thing that happens is you end up crashing hard and havnig to walk in for a mid to late 3:00s finish.Damn, i thought getting sliced open sucked, but getting oVVned by your wife is the pits. Why can't you sign up and do this with her? That's a pretty good 10K time. Yes! Olympic, here we come! I just can't get back that weekend to run with her and get back 2 weeks later to run the Detroit Free Press 1/2 Marathon. My fault for not adding more details. Getting sliced open still sucks more. FWIW, I'm training to run 3:10 at Memphis in December (or maybe even a little faster), and my coach has me doing all of my long runs and my easy stuff at 8:20'ish pace. If you're thinking about shooting for 3:15, then I'd guess that 8-minute pace is way too fast for your training runs. It sounds counter-intuitive that you'll race faster by training slower, but it's super important that you develop your Zone 1 as much as possible. Believe me when I say that 8-minute pace feels very comfortable for me, too, but it's still way too close to MP for training purposes.Having never run a marathon before my goal was going to be 3:30 since 8 min pace is pretty comfortable for me. For the event, you won't want gloves. Takes time to put them on.Beyond that, for training whatever feels comfortable. try several pairs on at the shop. I'm not a huge fan of a big wad of padding as it makes my hands cramp.2Young2BBald said:You mean other than being another state for work for the next 2-months or so?BassNBrew said:Damn, i thought getting sliced open sucked, but getting oVVned by your wife is the pits. I'll second that. I'm looking for new gloves with a bit less padding on the underside/bottom of the hand. BnB - I hope your recovery is quick. For the event, you won't want gloves. So I decided to retool the workouts, and went with reps both days - 150 push-ups/etc on Saturday and 200 today. The "etc" includes sit-ups and such, but to make the training more strenuous, I did 150 lunges on Saturday and 100 more on Sunday. We used them for the Philly Distance Run 2 weekends ago. You don't even notice it's there (but I didn't have a problem with the old chips either)Anyone race with the new disposeable ChampionChip? They are popping up on the race information pages for a couple of upcoming races. Last year's Detroit Marathon & 1/2 Marathon was a test event for them. I can't wait to use them. I hate the feel of the chip on my shoe top and find it very weird to have someone take my chip off my shoe for me (but do it as bending over is usually tough at the end).
I actually had a hard work week last week = I was pretty absent from here. Thank goodness I'm back to a normal week!
