...I've been slacking off on the 100 push-ups/200 sit-ups plan. Probably because I just haven't been lifting at all due to my knee. I'm starting back up again tomorrow and will try to pick it up on week 3/day 3. This weekend I'll hopefully get a chance to register for a bunch of races I have planned. Any Chicago area guys want to register for a race together for fun?
Pick up the pace soldier. I finished Week3/day 3 last night. On to week 4 this evening. Spent part of yesterday looking for new running/biking routes where we are building our new house. I was ecstatic to find quite a few trails, and some actual hills in the area. We are moving to a much more rural area, and from the looks of it, my running and cycling will be even more enjoyable then where we are at now

I think I saw some of those when I was struggling through the last few miles of P.F. Chang's! :lmao:

Not a "Chicago-area guy," but I could probably be convinced to drive down for a race and a night on the town in Chicago. But excessive drinking and scandalous women must also be involved....
Missed my run yesterday :lmao: I had to drive a coworker 2 hours down to a rehab place. effin coworker.
Welcome, Winston. But remember what they say about excuses being like a-holes. Everybody's got one, and they all stink! :lmao: _________________________For me, up playing b-ball this morning at 6 AM. One of those days where I would hit a long 3-pointer from 22 feet and then miss a layup. Frustrating. Might do an easy 4-5 miles later this afternoon, but otherwise planning on an easy (8:00 pace) 10-miler tomorrow sometime.

Awesome, that's the one thing I'm going to miss most about leaving Iowa and moving to Chicago. Going from riding 2 miles any direction to be free of stop lights to living in a place where you can't be free of stop lights makes me  Picking back up on push-ups/sit-ups today...I hope.

Miss me guys?? I received a two month timeout for telling a joke incorrectly (the entire thread confused 'deaf' with 'mute', and I spaced out wrt understanding the difference  ), so I've been keeping my running log offline. My sentence is finally up. :lmao:

01-05 - After taking a break from running for 2+ months (last run = Fall50 in October), I got back on the horse. I did 2mi today in about 18:55. I say "about" as I don't know where my Garmin is packed away, so I had to use a regular analog watch. This is also part of the ptts for not running at all, as I returned to Phoenix for all of November to finish up some things with my house, and didn't have most of my running gear. Even the 2mi is a 99% approximation, as I relied on Google Maps for the distance. Man I am SSOOO spoiled by Garmin. :D lol Anyhow, it was a good run, nice and easy. I had to take it easy, as I was running on a "musical sidewalk" (it was covered by a thick layer of ice requiring you to "c-sharp", else you would "b-flat" :) ). I survived the sidewalk on the run, but managed to slip and fall as I stepped onto the final 50ft of sidewalk leading to my apartment building. :ouch: It was about 23degrees out, yet I managed to break a sweat. I'm not sure if I'm ready to test running in sub-zero temps, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. lol

01-08 - Sore legs yesterday, so I decided to rest another day, as I'm just starting out again. 2mi in 18:10 today (again by analog watch). Until I get some warm running gear, my limit appears to be at about 10degrees, which was today's temp. Sweats almost weren't enough. I probably would have been in trouble if it was a longer run. The "musical sidewalk" got me again today at around 1.8mi, landing me right on the seat of my pants. Note to neighbors: either leave the snow, or clean up the #### ### # ## # ####### ### ##### ice in addition to cleaning up the snow! Cleaning up the snow and leaving an ice rink only makes the hockey players happy!

01-10 - Helped my BIL move today, so I didn't get a chance to run. Hopefully I can squeeze in a run tomorrow. Forecast this next week is for single digits, with a -2 for a high on Thursday ( :o ), so I may have to :pttdcahc: (point to the down comforter and hot cocoa) and screw running for the near future. lol

01-12 - Helped my BIL again yesterday (missed football AND 24 as well! ), so that blows that weekend. It's been snowing here all day, and supposed to be bitter cold for the next few days, so I may have to get creative in finding a way to run this week (how many times running up and down two flights of stairs equals a mile? ).

01-19 - Ah, the perfect week for the ptts-er. Too freakin' cold last week, then I was sick all weekend. I had some errands to run today, so I did manage a 2mile walk (the wife wrecked the Fall50-mobile just before Christmas, and was out of town with our other car, so I was left with walking to get things done).

01-20 So I'm watching the Inauguration today. Obama begins his speech after taking the oath. A few seconds in...<bam!>...the screen blips out and goes to snow. WTF, did a nuke just go off?! :o The feed came back after a few seconds, but it was interesting there for a bit. 2mi in 18:30 today. It appears that a few of my neighbors took my advice and didn't shovel their sidewalks at all. :bastages:

01-22 2mi in 17:30. :pickle: Hamstrings ached a little, but I still managed to fly (by my standards). 8:30 first mile, with a 9:00 return trip (including a short walk break halfway back). Congrats to Chad, as he was part of a Guinness Book record-setting field at PF Chang's last week! :wall:

01-27 Another cold snap over the weekend, expected to end today. I started the 100 pushups routine instead. Day 1 of Week 3. :Ahnuld:

01-28 2mi in 17:40. I might have run a negative split, but given that I'm using an analog watch, I'll go with two equal 8:50's.

01-29 Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, I'm free at last! :andydufresne: Did pushups today, Day 2 of Week 3.

The following races are under consideration for 2009:

04-11 Inaugural Illinois Marathon (Urbana-Champaign IL) *

05-02 Inaugural Wisconsin Marathon (Kenosha WI) *

05-03 Inaugural La Crosse Marathon

05-03 Eau Claire Marathon

05-09 Fargo Marathon

05-17 Green Bay Marathon

05-24 Inaugural Stillwater MN Marathon

05-31 Inaugural Minneapolis Marathon *

06-20 Grandma's Marathon (Duluth MN)

08-08 Gopher to Badger Half-Marathon

09-20 Fox Cities Marathon

10-04 Twin Cities Marathon

* FYI gruecd/tri-man/et al - these websites say their courses have been/will be certified to be Boston qualifiers; this doesn't help for 2009, but for future reference for us upper-midwesterners

I dunno, shall I run all five inaugural marathons, including back-to-back Wisconsin and La Crosse??

The 2010 Goofy's Challenge may have to come off the board, unless someone would care to front me $285 for registration. :lmao: Oh well, I guess I can become a Cubs' fan now..."there's always next year".

Currently accepting donations/sponsors for the following:

04-07 Antarctic Ice Marathon $16,500

12-12 North Pole Marathon 11,900EUR

:wall: :pickle:

Hey, RS, what's up? Two-month sentence, huh? Geez, first one my guys no-shows for our basketball game the other night because he got hauled to jail on a warrant, and now this! Pretty soon people are going to start to wonder about the people I'm hanging out with!

I dunno, shall I run all five inaugural marathons, including back-to-back Wisconsin and La Crosse??
Welcome Back GB  I say go for it Rock Star! If you are going to choose between La Crosse and Eau Claire = I'd do La Crosse. I've done their Oktoberfest half marathon three times (last time in '96), and it was a great race (scenic and flat) all three times, with a good party afterward.

The Mrs and I will be running the half here. I looked at the course on line. Pretty tame.

Eau Claire (or, as my wife calls it, "eclair" ) isn't an inaugural race, so it wouldn't fit into my "Five Inaugural Marathons in Fifty Days" psychotic episode.

tri-man, can you tell me more about the Chicago Trail Series and the Udder Century Ride? Those look pretty cool and doing a century has been one of my goals for 2009.

Very doable. Saturday race and then a night of drunkenness to follow. We just gotta find a good race that would make the drive down for you worthwhile.

Wisconsin Marathon in Kenosha on 5/2 moves the travel distance a bit loser to gruecd. :thanks:

Honestly, this is probably the best option, but (A) it's in the middle of summer, and (B) it's pretty expensive for a half marathon.

IN.(A) Middle of summer is when runner chicks wear short shorts and tight tops. Also, summer is when chicks going out at night wear significantly less clothing.

(B) Cost is made up for by "A", see above.

I stumbled upon the CTS last summer. It was (and should be again) a three-race sequence. 8k, 10K, and 12K cross-country runs in a forest preserve out in Palatine (nothing extreme at all). They limit each race to a couple hundred runners. I only was able to catch the 10K, which followed two nights of downpours, so it was sloppy, muddy fun. I'd like to do these, if the dates work out, in case I join 2Young's old man team for a 100K cross-country relay in September. The Udder Century is a sequence of rides (doesn't really look like a race) on that date near a town about an hour outside of Chicago (off the highway heading out toward Rockford). If I'd do it, I would want to try to do the 100 miler, though I'd probably average no better than 18 mph ..I can't fly along like BnB, culdeus, and now liquor. The August 2 race that you and gruecd have brought up is a possibility, depending on the CTS schedule. I won't solidify scheduling until I get into May and see how the spring weather/training is going. -----Training this week so far has been three indoor bike sessions (45-60 minutes each) and two swims (50 minutes each). I'll hit the weekend training pretty hard since my work schedule is now getting lighter (just finished teaching a class, and shouldn't be teaching again until September).

Weclome back. $285 might look steep, but I can tell you, like everything else at the happiest place on earth, it looked like it was worth it. Got the chance to talk with a few people down there who had done the Goofy after my wife & I did the 1/2. If you had the chance to talk with any one of them, you'd sign up right away. There was a vibe they each had that was like nothing else post race I've ever seen. By the way, you don't get the full bragging rights unless you do the Circle of Life 5K at Animal Kingdom on Friday of race weekend too. I put in my race report that I got to see the Rockstar Medal you received in person and that thing is silly big and heavy.

Whoa, sorry. No, that was a total accident. You try taking a two-month timeout and see if you still remember how to type. lol Besides, when I call you a loser, it definitely won't be a typo. So, you callin' my wife (a Racine-ian) a :gang1: and :gang2: ?? ;) ....well, on second thought, she probably can kick all our collective butts.

Kenosha (and the inaugural Wisconsin Marathon) was just a thought. Less driving for you. Besides, I never said the drunkenness had to stay there. There's always Sturtevant or Union Grove.

Miss me guys??
Were you gone? Well, not really. I was still checking in to see what you yayhoos were up to. There was just that whole "you aren't allowed to log in, you ##&$%#@@!!" stuff.
the wife wrecked the Fall50-mobile just before Christmas
Well there's a shocker. :excited:

:sheputscabdriverstoshame: Well, how many cabbies have rolled a van, been ejected from it, and nearly was able to get up, dust themselves off, and walk away? If it weren't for the paramedic+nurse in the car behind her that stopped to help right away (and made her sit still/immobilized her), I wouldn't have put it past her to get up and walk away. lol She was very lucky. No broken bones, open wounds, etc, just some deep bruising (still sore six weeks later). P.S. she just walked by, I mentioned your comments, and she says "she'll remember...."...you might want to start sleeping with one eye open... :ninja:

Well, when you're under-employed (technically UNemployed, but my previous employer rehired me as a temp and I telecommute for ~20hrs/wk), $285 is quite steep, especially when you pile on airfare and hotel. Certainly, I do want to do it, and I'll get there eventually, but with registration filling up fast, 2010 isn't looking very probable. I even hit up Team In Training as a possible avenue, but was told they don't do it because it would be too much for a newbie (one would think that a set of Rockstar medals would get me past the newbie stage, but oh well).Even pulling off the five inaugural marathons might be biting off more than I can chew. The total of the registration fees is more than Goofy's, but at least I could register over a couple of months (and eating the extra $5-10 in increases by certain dates). I'm still working on this one. What's that saying, "champagne tastes on a beer budget." lol

I hit Happy Hour pretty hard  and am now at home, drinking with the Mrs. I won't do my week 4/day 1 tonight but will test how many push-ups I can do. Hold on and I'll check.

Ouch. Only 58. I did 62 in my pre-test two weeks ago  Somehow either the large quantitities of beer, or the 100 push-up challenge is making me weaker.

I started this week. I pre-tested at 25 (might have been able to squeeze out a couple more, but why push it, eh?), so it said I could start on Week 3. I did Day 1 on Tuesday, and had to struggle to reach 17 in the 5th set. I did Day 2 on Thursday, and it was a bit easier this time. I did 20 on the 5th set, and might have been able to squeeze out a couple more. Not sure how all the rest breaks actually work, so my taking 2-3mins or more between sets on Day 2 may have made it easier (did 60sec between sets on Day 1 as instructed, and was pretty gassed at the end). Day 3 on tap for tomorrow (Saturday).I should be able to get in a good run as well. We're supposed to have a heat wave, with the mercury possibly climbing all the way to the freezing mark (first time all month!)!! :o :lmao: I'm not holding my breath, as the weatherdudes here pretty much suck. They forecast 30-32 for a three day period a week an a half ago, and I think the closest it got was 28. We're planning to take advantage of the good weather and dig some stuff out of storage (my wife needs her blender and crockpots for Super Bowl fixings!), so hopefully I can find my Garmin. Doubly-hopefully, I can find the charger as well, as that was misplaced/packed around the time of Fall50 and I only had about 3hrs of charge left on the watch.

The in-laws were over last night when I got home to have dinner at our house. They stayed after the kids were in bed for some Settlers of Catan. Needless to say I did not get my run in yesterday. Flip-flop the Saturday off day with Friday and it looks like I will be running today. Nothing better than a wide open weekend.

Nothing better than a wide open weekend.
Amen to that ...not to mention some better temps outside. Time for me to get MY butt out of the pool and out on the streets.
Same here = first open weekend of the year. I got a nice 6 miler in this morning (57 degrees, with a high of 70 today  ). This afternoon we'll have a family bike ride out at our new property, and will be walking on the trails as well. Tomorrow will be a longer bike ride, in preparation for the 1,000's of calories I'm anticipating my body will ingest during the game. Life is good!

I finished w4d3 today and I shaved time off of my Thursday run. I will start wk 5 on Monday. I am contemplating doing another week 4 run tomorrow am to try and offset what I plan on doing to my body while watching the Super Bowl.

I am going to eat and drink what ever I want and as much as I want. I may even do it till I puke and then do it all over again. It is my God given right to do that on SB Sunday. :(

I am bringing the following to a party tomorrow:Buffalo Chicken Dip:

Grill (2) large chicken breast (the Costco frozen kind), seasoned with Tony Chachere's Creole seasoning and a little olive oil to keep them moist. Once cooked, chop the chicken to fine bits. Soften 2 blocks of cream cheese in the microwave & start stirring in the chicken. Add Frank's Red Hot (I'd guess almost a cup) until it makes the entire mess to a pinkish red, to-taste hotness. Serve with celery & Tostitos Scoops. Easy, but awesome.

World's Best Margaritta Punch:

Start with a large can of frozen lime-aide and add it to a large pitcher. Fill the empty can with cheap gold tequilla and add it to the pitcher. Then, add (4) watery beers (I prefer Busch-Light Draft). Serve on the rocks (its real good with a salted rim). I thought it'd be ;) the first time I'd heard of it, but its awesome.

Rode the bike on the trainer yesterday, hope to have a good long run tomorrow and hope I don't chum the pool on the Monday after the Super Bowl festivites.

Tried to pick up some more OxySox today and it appears there may be some kind pf patent issue that is making them unavailable according to the folks at my local shop. They are going to be testing a product by Segouy (sp?) beofre they decide if these will replace the Oxys on the shelf. The girl/pro I talked to at the shop said the Segouys are more like a nylon sleve/sock than the Oxy type

ETA, Just flipped through the Triathlete Mag I picked up at the running store. There is a 5 page article on compression socks. Looks like I am not as big a dork as I thought (who's kidding who, I still look like a dork in them).

Hey, everybody! Just got back from a nice, easy 12-mile run. Wore the Garmin, but I really just turned it on and then didn't look at it again until I was finished. I didn't want to focus on pace, just a relaxed effort. Like RS said, it's a little warmer up here today with temps in the low 30s, but it's also pretty windy, so it still feels a bit cooler. Still, it was nice to skip the fleece and go with just the Under Amour mockneck and windbreaker. Anyway....the first couple of miles felt way harder than they should've felt (although I was heading straight into the wind), and I thought for a minute that I might've been a bit aggressive attempting 12 just two weeks post-marathon. But I felt a little better when I got out of the wind, and better yet after I took my GU around 5.5 miles. I had the wind at my back for the last four miles, so those felt really good. Finished up and checked the Garmin, and I ended up averaging 7:52 pace. What made me really happy, though, was that the last four miles were my fastest. All of my best marathoner friends run negative splits, and I really want to try doing that in my next race. Here were my splits:

7:45, 7:58, 8:00, 7:59, 8:03, 8:00, 8:04, 8:02, 7:44, 7:34, 7:36, and 7:42

SRD tomorrow, but since I don't have my b-ball league because of the Super Bowl, I might do an easy 4-5 miles. BTW, I'm thinking I might just train for the full marathon at Green Bay. I've come to the conclusion that I NEED cooler weather to BQ again. Green Bay is almost always 30s & 40s. Chicago will be my back-up plan.

It was 46 today! :o   Weatherdudes were off in their forecast by 14degrees! Given that they erred on the warmer side, I suppose that's about the only way these doophi will be allowed to keep their jobs. :XI had planned on a run and pushups today, but decided to climb around our garage first to try and find my wife's crockpots and blender for SB fixin's tomorrow. I ended up "cross-training", as I had to chip out about 9cubic feet of ice from in front of the door (apartment management has apparently been a little lax in de-icing around here; it was 4inches deep! :o ). When I finally was able to chip away enough ice from underneath the door, I was dismayed to find 2inches of ice extending about 6feet into the garage. We've been using the garage for storage, so some of our stuff is iced to the floor. I would imagine some of my National Geographics are destroyed, but I'll hold out hope for the best. If anyone has any tips for trying to salvage this stuff (lots of towels during the thawing process? use the oven? etc...), please shoot me a PM.It took me about 3hrs to get all the ice out of the way, and another hour or so freeing the door and digging trenches to convince the melt to runoff away from the garage, so I am so freakin' sore right now. I need to figure out how to take some more Advil at around 4-5am while I'm still asleep, so I don't wake up in pain. Swinging that pick should have counted for about 8million pushups, so I'll see if I can do w4d1 on Monday instead of trying to make up w3d3. :wall:Needless to say, this killed off most of the day, so no run, no pushups, and worst of all, no crockpots and blender. :goodposting: Guess I'll have to try again in the morning (not that I wanted to watch all nine hours of pre-game coverage; the last hour or two will suffice). Go Steelers!! :lmao:

Man, 39-degrees never felt so good. After a record setting January for snowfall and a top 10 January for lowest temps here, I took advantage of the heat wave to run 11-miles today. Much of the sidewalks are still snow covered, so it felt a lot more like a trail run than a pavement run. I did it doing the 7 on run, 1 off walk to see if I can pull off full marathon in early April. I am real close to committing, but need one more long run to see if its possible.

ETA, didn't want you all to miss a good laugh at my expense. A moment ago, my son looked at me and began to laugh uncontrolably. Apparently, I should have worn sunscreen on my run. I wore my running hat that sits lower on my forehead and ears. So, I am sun burned on my face and have a lilly white noggin that continues a half moon around my face. It looks like I am wearing a helmet. This ought to be fun for the next week or so

Doing what? I'm guessing some kind of run/walk method, right?Myself, I'm guessing 36 degrees would probably feel pretty good, too, but I just did 12 yesterday, and my knee and hamstring are a little sore, so I'll think I'll go with my better judgment and just lay low today.

Yes, 7 minute run, 1 minute walk, repeat. I have avoided all thoughts of a full because I know how I feel after a 1/2 due to a whole host of prior injuries. However, I re-read a book by Bigham & Hadefield and read up on some Galloway stuff online and I want to see if this can get me there. For todays run, I still averaged just over 10-minute miles at the end of what was a hard week of exercise, so I think there is hope. The 5/1 that Galloway outlines is too much start stop and 10/1 didn;t feel right either after some trial and error. So, I am rested on 7/1 and liked it. Slowing my pace off of what I normally run was tough.

Well, I found something today that could keep me from achieving my goal. Since we got back from Las Vegas last night, I didn't run until this afternoon.

80 degrees + Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich prerace meal + 10 mile run = bad

I managed to average a nine minute mile today, but I was totally spent by the time I reached the end. Of course, running the race at 7 a.m. and not 2 p.m. will probably help quite a bit.

Solid weekend of training -

Saturday - 80 minute a.m. swim; 6 mile p.m. run; 200 reps in the evening

SB Sunday - 1 hr indoor bike trainer this morning; 6 mile p.m. run; hopefully 200 more reps at halftime.

Caught the end of the Australian Open tennis this morning while biking ...talk about your endurance event! The heart of myswim yesterday was 3 x 20 laps (1,000 yards each) at 20:35, 20:55 and 21:05.

Game time!!!

January Totals

Also did a set of 6 x 800 lb leg presses.

Goal would be 500 mile run, 5000 mile bike for the year.

Did get in a 45 mile bike and 5K run bric today.

Well, after missing my Friday run I made sure to get in a run on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday I ran 5 miles and yesterday I ran 7. It was not easy. I think adding a run during the week and adding an mile to my long run in the same week may have been a bit much. I am not sore today, but I felt a little sick to my stomach when I finished my run yesterday. Once I was able to get some water in my stomach I started to feel better, but I was right at the point of puking for about 5 minutes after the run. I don't think it was too much running. I think it had more to do with the food I ate Saturday night and Sunday morning before my run. I should have had more to eat before my run.

Glad to see the good reports from the weekend, and it is nice to have some better weather here in MN.

Great to hear that the weather up North is getting nicer for y'all. I had a great solo ride yesterday. It was 75, but windy (20 mph +). The first 11 were all into the wind, with the last 9 all with the wind. I worked by tail off the first 11, and was able to maintain an 18 mph average. All of the last 9 were over 20, with an average of over 22 (I averaged over 28 for three consecutive miles). My overall average was 20.1, and for an early in the year base building ride I was pretty ecstatic. I'll start my spin classes again this week (T & Th) and will also continue getting ready for our upcoming Half marathon.

After consuming approx. 7,000 calories during the Super Bowl (started eating/drinking waaaay too early this year), I have some work to get into shape.

Update: I had to bartend this weekend and pulled a "double shift" Saturday. So, starting on Friday at 4:30pm and ending on Saturday at 10:30pm I worked a total of 21 hours. On my feet the whole time. I planned on doing my long run on Sunday but my legs/feet were pretty worn out. So did 5 miles at 9:13pace (was hoping to go 6-7 miles).

I ate/drank way too much yesterday during the Super Bowl...so I'm concerned how my run on Tuesday will be. I'm guessing I'm not the only one who overindulged!
