How trusting are y’all?
last night was the weekly team rocket tri ride on the Arsenal, where about 12-20 people show up outside the gate, ride in (Not everyone has access on their own). We got out, rode down to the river in different ability groups, turn around and head back. Usually it’s about 20-24 miles. Then run a mile or two.
last night, I rode with the B group because I didn’t want to push hard the whole time, but I decided to push a little and got ahead of the pack. By probably a mile or so. When I got to the river I looked over and there’s a significant storm cloud clearly coming our way. Apparently most of the others either saw it early or turned back at about the same time I did, as nobody else was near by.
Storm hits, heavy rain, and cross winds strong enough to push my bike sideways. Thankfully the winds are from the south and we’re heading mostly north.
visibility was shot, then a truck passes me, stops with its blinker on. I assume it’s part of our crew or Someone they had called. Frankly I didn’t care, we’re on the Arsenal and I don’t consider myself a target. I get in, talk to the guy for a bit (he’s major in the national guard, here for classes). Then we stop for another rider, a tiny female. She gets in, wants to sit in the back (covered Dodge Ram) because she wants to protect her bike (I offered the front seat, she didn’t want it).
Granted, we’re on the Arsenal and she knew me, and that storm was significant. But would you have gotten in, in most circumstances?

fyi... 24 weeks to monumental. Seemed a good time to get back out and run this week. That and the HS baseball season is winding down and I don't have games 6 days a week. Maybe next year I will quit being a bum and run in the mornings... But for now, you guys might be stuck with me popping in again from time to time.

Got some possible good news today, hernia doctor doesn’t think it’s a hernia.  Couldn’t find a bulge(my wife has the same problem), sending me for mri to verify.  Thinks it is a severe muscle strain which is hitting the same nerve that a hernia would so mimicking the same symptoms.

no surgery would be awesome.  He’s pushing ice  and ibuprofen and no activity for 2 weeks and see how it feels.  MRI is scheduled for next Wednesday.
This is good and sort of follows my lower ab/adductor journey. It presented pain & location like a hernia but wasn’t. MRI will confirm and rest will let it calm down.

What is the Arsenal?

I completed my Couch to 5K journey this morning!  My goal was 32:30 and I finished in 32:05.  I had been running every other day for the first six weeks or so but I’ve dropped down to every 3 days these past few weeks to give my knees some extra recovery time.  I did finally go to my primary doctor last week and he prescribed 2 weeks of meloxicam (24hr anti-inflammatory) and physical therapy.  I have my first PT session next Friday so fingers crossed.  I’ve also been using a knee brace on my left knee as well and that seems to be helping too.

I was able to run from one end of the track to another at this week's city qualifier when one of our athletes was about to miss their event without limping during or the morning after. Setting the bar high these days!

Congrats!! That's a huge accomplishment and you came in under your goal.

Now, keep going.  :headbang:

Time to run a marathon

This week is the first time I have run double digit miles over the course of an entire week since running the HM at the Monumental... now I know why doing 4 miles seemed like a lot. I just thought all the yard work first was the problem - that or the 20 lbs I've put back on.

The journey of a lot a miles starts with the first step.

Prefontaine Classic this weekend, race fans.  Details here, looks like some network coverage Saturday afternoon.
https://www.preclassic.com/schedule

We went last night for the USATF 10K men's and women's finals (and a few other events) and were there today as well.  I know you've all heard it from me before but Hayward Field is just magical.  And not just because I used to make out with chicks in the original version of Hayward after parties back in college.

Our seats this weekend were at about the 90M mark, just a few rows up. They showed us on tv clapping as they were introducing the men's 100M runners.

Here's the Bowerman Mile race pulled from YouTube, just a casual 3.49.76.  Here was our view of the finish.

The men's 100M

Cool hurdles pic I caught

I'll keep reiterating it because I'm serious - if any of you are T&F fans and want to come out to Eugene for NCAAs/Nationals/Worlds/Olympic Trials/Pre, you've got a place to stay!

Got an email today about signing up for the Columbus marathon in October...prices increase on 6/1.  Wife asked what the plan was (she will be doing the HM).

I said Indy.  She is on board  :coffee:

Ugh. ####ty run. I’d say It was hot, but really I’m just not in endurance shape. Finished, which is all I really wanted.

Funny, I would have been top 3 in many age groups including the young bucks. 6th in the mid-life crisis 45-49 🤷

I was kind of bummed they didn't have any updates along the way. Kept trying to see if they would put anything up but never happened.

Nice work, imo.

Interesting. I’ve always wondered why I run fast (relatively) in training runs when I’m such a naturally lazy person.  If my body figures out an efficient transport cost, that would explain it.
Yeah. I similarly found it interesting because I think I'm definitely on the slower side for my easy runs. But, interestingly enough, if I pick up the pace a little, I find a pace around 9:15 actually feels better/easier than a 9:45ish pace.

Thanks. I’m not unhappy with it, but I don’t think I’ll be doing this one again.

Which means next year I can do the local cotton row, which is one of the bigger running events in Huntsville.

Still...congrats on finishing a Half-IM in tough conditions and with limited training!!  :pickle:

When I was running a lot, I often found this to be true. There was a certain pace that was comfortable and easier than other slower paces.

May was a decent month overall

 42 hours, 511 miles (total)

35% bike, 28% swim, 26% run, 4% weights, 7% other.

I’ll probably push the strength training up a bit in June, overall won’t get near the time in as we’re taking a week in Costa Rica and I doubt I’ll get any training in. We’ll be building walls or repairing an orphanage so we’ll be working.

LOOK AT ME, I'M AN AMAZING HUMAN BEING!

;)  jkjkjk very cool what you're doing there

Had a great month.  New PR for mileage (448km/278mi).  3rd-best for elevation (9,868m/32,375ft).

Also helped that there were more weekend (plus the holiday) days in this month than usual, which adds to the mileage.
Great job, you've been so consistent with your training this year. I don't see anything for you on the race calendar, when will you be racing again? Your mileage for the year so far 1,218.4, is more than I have ever run through 6/1.

Thanks, GB!

I've been very lucky this year to be injury-free (so far, knock on wood).  Been trying to stretch my calf as frequently as possible, to keep it from going south like it did around this time last year.

I have had three big races YTD:  Bandera 100K, Vegas HM, and Miwok 100K.  Those kept me vigilant with the training, and all three went better than I hoped.

In terms of future races, in just under two weeks I have the KT82 relay with a bunch of cranky old dudes.

I'm signed-up for J&J at the end of July, but 99% not going to run it.  It's just a rollover from last year when I was injured and took the free deferral.

In August, I have my usual 26K trail race on one of my home trails (Moose Mountain) and plan to run that hard.  Really go for it, to see how I can place among my other local trail runners.

I'm considering the local ultra I DNF'd last year (Iron Legs), but a shorter distance (Aug as well).  I don't need to try *another* 100K in 2022.

Finally, I might try a turkey trot 5K to finally race that distance (never raced a 5K before).

Other than that, no plans for racing for the rest of the year.  Next year I'll need to find another qualifying 100K to keep my WSER lottery ticket active, and I'm leaning toward Miwok again (since it was so awesome this year).  Bandera was good, but it was nothing compared to Miwok.

oh man... I was putting some stuff together this morning and feeling a bit daunted. Then I come in here to post about it and see several "look at what a BMF I am" posts. On the one hand, I feel more daunted. On the other, it's that kind of thing that has helped me feel motivated around here. whew... such a range of emotions...

Dude your kickass HM (1:37 IIRC) is what motivated me to go for sub-99 as well.  You need to get back to it!!!

Original thoughts where this... I pulled all my info from 2019 when I ran my one and only marathon and put it in a spreadsheet along with room to enter my info for this year. First, I kind of forgot how much effort I put into getting ready for the first one. I also had kind of remembered but also kind of forgot how many holes I had in my training for it. So... I have something to compare myself to as I start trying to get ready for this thing. I also have a lot of ground to catch up on myself in terms of where I was at the start of that to now. But all I can do is start from where I am and see how far I can get.

So, away we go, or something like that.

Also will add this - last week was the first time I had ran in 8 weeks and it sucked pretty bad. I have been umpiring baseball games 5 to 6 days a week depending on weather. That's a lot of squats every week so I have plenty of strength. But I've eaten like crap and have zero cardio base. So, last week week sucked great big donkey balls. Last night it was 20* hotter and sucked, but for different reasons. I already felt a difference in terms of how it sucked just a few runs in. Last year, I kind of started this with a pretty bad attitude and bailed on the idea of doing a marathon pretty quick. I also think I may have overdid a couple things early trying to recapture whatever I had going on in 2019. This time I have plenty of apprehension about trying to recapture the fire and get back the fitness level I once had, but I think I'm in a better place mentally to tackle this.

Time will tell, but I do know that being in here is a big part of the motivation. You people rock and are quite inspirational. So, let's go!

Glad to see you getting back into this.  Keep it up.

Last post for today well right now anyway... if you want to see me in action on the baseball field, here's some news footage of the sectional final I was umpiring Monday evening. I'm the guy at first base on the first highlight about 10 seconds into the clip. You can see me briefly make a fine rotation from 1B to 2B on the second highlight but mostly pay attention to the sweet relay throw by the SS to home. Game changing play right there.
