Ran a 10k - Official Thread (9 Viewers)

It's usually the little yappers that actually bite, while the big ones just intimidate you. I must smell like hamburger or bacon or something because I get bit all the time. Probably three or four times last year, and I had a terrible running year.

I got in six slow ones this morning. They say a cool front is coming through Friday, so maybe lower 60s for the weekend runs.

Looking like low 70s but humid Saturday morning for my race. I'll take the low 70's - should be done by 10am or in an ambulance so not too worried. Plan is to finish with a smile on my face and then spend the winter building a larger base with each sport. I'm so slow in all 3.

thankfully I've never gotten bit hard but I did have one bigger mutt nudge into me. I don't sweat it too much while running - the dogs I have ran into I just stop for a second, have them sniff my hand and maybe walk for a little with them. It's the dogs that come near me while riding I really don't like. Could be the sweetest dog ever, but if he runs into me, we're both getting hurt.

Sounds like a great weekend shaping up for you guys! Good luck to all racing.

In Boston this week, so ran a great 5.25 miler this morning. I am staying close to the Boston Commons, so ran down to the finish line of the marathon, snapped a few pics, and ran around that area for awhile. Nice to get some new scenery, the weather was a little better (still warm, but not KC warm). If all my runs were like this one I would love this game.

Great morning.
For how long are you in Boston?
I'm here until Friday afternoon. So I'll probably run tomorrow morning and Friday morning also.

Chiefs, when are you going to get on Strava? :coffee:

Would it be easier to put a list up of who's not racing this weekend? Sheesh!

pbm & juxt - half marathons. juxt, you're weather forecast looks PRIMO, dude. pbm, looking like we're getting wet. :kicksrock:

AAA - repopping that tri cherry. :headbang:

Nigel - trail HM. How hard is the trail, do ya know?

Anyone I miss?

GTFO.

The only person a laugh at on there is Steve but only because it keeps me from crying about how much faster he is than all of us.

ETA: But yeah, strava is both encouraging and humbling. Aside from the guys in here that are ridiculous, I follow guys back home that are beasts as well. Some days it's tough to see how much better their workouts are your own but most those same guys are the first ones to like or comment on your run. I love getting the kudos and comments after a run. Sometimes I'm even bummed on my off day that I have nothing to post on there.

I am not happy with the weather forecast, my race doesn't start until 9 so the suck index is expected to be in the upper 130s.

Oof. 9AM is way too late start a half marathon this time a year. Any race really.

Okay. My first real "race" an easy 5K on flat surface is October 3rd. I'm not where I had hoped I'd be in preparation for it.

I can run 2 miles at a consistent pace, but I break down in the third. What's the best way to train for increasing distance?
I believe some guys in here have had some success with the couch to 5K program.
I've done it, but the couch 2 5K program is not realistic for a first time 5K. I've completed the program, which does get you running nonstop for 30 minutes, but that's not a 5K for a beginner. I can run 40 or so minutes nonstop at a fairly slow pace, but it comes up more like 2.7 miles and I'm starting to suck wind. Maybe the answer is to continue to grind that pace out for the next 3 weeks try to stretch it out to 3.1 miles. I'm not sure. Strava has some fairly complex plan which uses interval training and runs of up to 1hr 30minutes as a prep plan for a 5K. Maybe that's the right approach, just seeking some input.
Looking at your run on strava, your heart rate never really got very high. What specifically makes you feel the need to walk? Identifying your weaknesses is first step of trying to correct them.

That sucks. Maybe the rain will help? I'm personally trying to remember being uncomfortably warm running in the rain and I'm drawing a blank.

I had rain the beginning of my half on Sunday it was no relief from the heat. It wasn't raining real hard. It was just annoyingly hitting you in the face and eyes. It also helped soak my shoes early in the race. Running with soggy feet ain't fun.

Other than yourself?!

Building on the GPS watch talk from a few days ago, are all of these models similar in terms of connectivity and charging? Ideally, I would want a watch that could beam data to my smartphone and not have to be tethered to a PC. Also, charging via microUSB would be much easier than one more GD charger in my kitchen. Would this push me towards one over the other? More concerned about GPS functionality than HR.

This.

And I'm the slowest dude on all of Strava so you're good. ;)

I would definitely look for a watch that syncs via bluetooth. I think most the newer watches have that function these days.

The trail HM I'm running has no aid stations until you finish the first 10k loop (plus an additional .7M mini loop at the start, so around 7M). I never carry fluids on long runs, always stash them along the route ahead of time. I regularly run 7/8M without taking anything but am wondering if I should carry something for this, or if getting a single blast of something before the final 10K will be enough. It's going to be around 70 with low humidity at race time. Thoughts?

I did go out and buy a 10 oz handheld last night. Haven't run with it and was planning to take today and tomorrow off. I guess I could do a short test run but for those of you who carry them is it a pain in the ###/take some getting used to? Does your arm get tired?

Since the weather won't be too bad and you are used to not drinking for long stretches, my guess is you'd be fine without. Just be sure to be well hydrated before the race.

agreed.

Your arm probably won't get tired with 10 oz (20-24 oz would be a risk) but you don't need it.

Oregon> I was talking to a guy in the speakeasy (reopened!!!!) and he commented that he had a 100 mile race coming up in Oregon this weekend, you running that? If not look for me at the speakeasy all weekend watching soccer, college football and the NFL. 6 TV's and good beer ='s my post run hangout from here till eternity.

This is why I love Strava...

The elevation chart on Via's website sucks. There's no way to really look at the mile by mile data, so I turned to Strava. I tried to create my own segment with a GPS file I found, but that registered me as running the friggin race already  So I created the segment off of that route and then deleted that activity. I'm not sure if Strava back dated everyone's runs against that route or what, but now I am able to back into other's races to see the real mile by mile data.

It looks like the majority of the elevation loss is on mile 2 with the rest of it being pretty flat with 2 small hills at miles 7 & 20. The last 3 miles look like a nice downhill also.

https://www.strava.com/segments/5451445

It definitely looks like a fast course and the weather forecast is improving. I can't wait to see how everyone does this weekend.

Each forecast looks like they think that front is going to get here sooner than they first thought. I hope that trend keeps going because whatever's coming is bringing some really low humidity. The Monday weather looks INSANE.

Looks like a crosswind. (Winds from NW and it looks like you're mainly going NE.) That should help cool you.

The whole race is downhill! Piece of cake! ;)

Why do you think I chose it, AAA?! :excited:

Are solar eclipses considered good luck? We're having one this Sunday....

Ahh, so you met Jim! Funny, I met him there 2 weeks ago, overheard him talking with the blonde bartender about trail running and we started talking. Turns out besides this race in common we know a bunch of the same people. I think this is his first 100, but he's a pretty fast dude - assuming he doesn't blow up and DNF he'll finish 7-8 hours quicker than I did. But anything can happen in a 100 miler - and it usually does. He's running the 100M I ran last year, Pine to Palm. Glad to hear he's going to do it, as 2 weeks ago he still hadn't committed.

I've actually been going to the Speakeasy the past few weeks on Tuesdays at about 5:30 - my daughter has volleyball practice at Hamilton from 5:30-6:30 so I just go there for a drink instead of driving home and turning around again 20 minutes later. I'd go for a run, but it's been too damned hot!

has any of our Strava guys gone premium? Thinking about it but is it worth it?
I know Ned has. I actually just signed up for month trial for free. It's got some cool features but I'm not sure it's a whole lot better than the free one. Ned, thoughts?

But speaking of strava...I was just thinking when I finished my run this morning and checked in that Ned, Juxt and PBM goal races are coming up pretty soon. Ned is basically done. Juxt will be done in early October. PBM what's your goal race? Who's going to be doing high mileage with me the next couple months? Am I gonna be alone? :scared:

I've read a bunch of reviews on this HM I'm doing and while they say in relative terms it's not the most technical of trail runs there are still plenty of hills, single track paths and stretches where you really have to slow down/walk to get through them safely. I'm definitely going into it with first goal being to stay upright, not so worried about my time particularly on the first loop. Should be fun.

FUBAR - Strava Premium was a waste of $. Don't buy it. :bag:

Hang10 - I know what you mean! Isn't it funny how you can lean on that sorta thing?? If it helps, my post-marathon plan is to go on a HM Bonanza so I'll be back soon :excited:

Nigel - Pick your feet up and don't look at your watch. Just focus 20yds ahead and stay relaxed. Even mildly technical trail can jump up and grab ya, but man is it fun! If there's a lot of single track like they say, you should try and line up at the front so you don't get bottle-necked at the trail head.

------------

In typical fashion, my runs kinda stink this week. Just going through the motions trying to stay loose. Can't keep my HR down since I'm visualizing every friggin step of the race. :excited:

Oh, that's very cool then. My race is the week before. :hifive:

Thanks. Mentally and physically I'm in a much better place than two weeks ago. . I'm not sure what was really wrong with me then but my resting heart rate is back down into the low 40's in the morning. So something is better at least. But all I really know is that I'm not dreading getting up to run lately.

With the exception of speed work (the rare times I do it), tempos and marathon pace runs, I do my training runs at whatever pace I feel like at the moment. If I feel like running slower, I run slower. If I feel like picking up the pace, I do so. PBM wrote something a few weeks ago along the lines of "I keep finding out that my body's smarter than my mind". I've been thinking a lot about that recently. My new running "theory" is to trust how I'm feeling and not allow my mind to override my body in terms of heart rate and pace. Basically, I think my body knows more about what I can handle and how to train optimally than my mind knows from reading online and from my books. At a minimum, I know it relieves the stress of constantly worrying about zones and stuff.

That's just me, though. I know everyone's different.

That's just me, though. I know everyone's different.
More or less that's what I'm doing now. I have been trying to use the monitor to figure out where my ceiling is certain days but I haven't felt boxed in like I was before. But at the same time I mindful of workouts later in week and decide how hard I want to push each day. There's definitely a balance that I'm trying to find.

Even though I've been running races for the last 4 years, this is the first time I've dedicated myself to a real training plan. Whether I hit my ultimate goal or not, I'm certainly going to take a lot more knowledge out of this process than I had going in.

So was Steve commemorating an AF race he crushed or was that pic on Facebook yesterday a recent attempt at being the fastest human on earth?

Good luck to all you fools running this weekend! Been out of this thread for a while but sounds like y'all are doing well!

has any of our Strava guys gone premium? Thinking about it but is it worth it?
I know Ned has. I actually just signed up for month trial for free. It's got some cool features but I'm not sure it's a whole lot better than the free one. Ned, thoughts?

But speaking of strava...I was just thinking when I finished my run this morning and checked in that Ned, Juxt and PBM goal races are coming up pretty soon. Ned is basically done. Juxt will be done in early October. PBM what's your goal race? Who's going to be doing high mileage with me the next couple months? Am I gonna be alone? :scared:
Your high mileage > my high mileage but I'll be ramping up the run miles in prep for the new years eve 50k.

I've been doing a 50k the end of December the past 3 years. I'll probably be right there with you.

Yeah I think that was from his AF marathon win from last year.

2Young first alerted me to the point that the pace for a trail race typically ends up being about 60-90 seconds slower per mile, and that's been true. So yeah, don't fret about the time - just enjoy the trails and race the competition!
