Ran a 10k - Official Thread (7 Viewers)

I'm feeling good about my chances, but there's no taking the marathon for granted.  When you do it will bite back.  And no one person is any match for the marathon's bite.

It's reading about you guys that makes me realize that you guys are runners and I'm just a guy who runs.

Unreal how awesome you guys can train.

Definitely wise to pace with caution being that it's your first marathon. Plus I think you have the speed and ability to run a nice negative split if you don't start too fast.

just when i'm feeling my oats after a "fast" 5k race, i come in and read about some loon running 103.1 miles. that's when i realize i'm just a fat guy out for a saturday stroll.

Exactly.

But, I will say, after the support these guys give, that all runs count. No matter how fast or slow. It's the effort that matters, and the fact that if you get off the couch and actually "do something", it's a win.

It's funny, I was thinking about all of this while I was finishing off my long run on Saturday. My marathon is in two weeks, and this whole training cycle, in my head this will be my final one. This summer just has not been enjoyable with the heat and humidity, and I'm just not sure I can do this anymore (at least a marathon).

But as I'm sitting there Saturday night, after discovering a new tip that I applied on my run Saturday, I start to think about "man, I really might miss these really long runs. I love how I feel after them."

So I don't know. My wife will kill me if I sign up for another one next year, but damn it's been 4 years of work to get to this point and I would hate to just let it all go to pot. But it's also possible the marathon distance just isn't for me.

I still plan to enter my spring half marathon, so at least I can work towards that.

Edit to add: also thinking about entering a trail race in February. They have a ten mile, 20 mile, and a 50k. Might dip my toes in the 10 miler.

You mistyped 20 miler.

Do it.  I must say, I'm not a runner and never have been.  Though always involved with athletics, I had never run further than five miles before running my first marathon back in 2003. Afterwards, I vowed never to run another as it just wasn't for me.  And I didn't, until my wife wanted to give it a go.  So I trained with and ran one with her in 2012.  And then on a whim I ran a half a half trail race in 2013 and that immediately changed the game for me.  There's just something different for me personally about being out on the trails.  Absolutely love the tranquility, and my body responds far more favorably than it does to the pavement.  So, I'd say you should absolutely give a trail race a go.

I hated running growing up, it was always punishment or "conditioning" for soccer and hoops.  Did the Couch to 5K program in 2007 just to try and lose some weight, and my first race was a road 12K that Fall a couple of weeks before I turned 35.  My second was a 16K trail race out on Angel Island in the middle of the SF Bay, and I was blown away. I remember stopping at the top of the island after a 700' climb to take in the view (and catch my breath).  And tripping twice.  And being bloody and dirty.  And sitting on the grass afterward drinking a beer, cheering on the very few people that came in after me.

After that I still ran roads/paths in The City, but I started spending more and more time on the weekends on trails.  Over the next two years I ran a few more road races (two halfs and a full), and a couple more sub-ultra trail races.  In 2009, two years to the month after that first 12K, I ran my first trail ultra and that was it for me.

Well, it's the middle of the night (2:15 am) and I'm doing my traditional post-ironman recovery...namely not sleeping a bit.  I'll post a full report when not on my phone, but just a simply brutal day today.

i saw more carnage today than I've ever seen at an IM.  97 and no shade will do that I guess.  I saw 7 ambulances, 3 rave staff carts pulling people off the course, and countless athletes sitting on the side of the course in the shade, vomiting, etc.. Goal time was sub 10:30 and I was somewhere north of 2 hours off that.

Well I'm no longer jealous ;)

Congrats!   That sounds miserable, awesome that you made it through.

I love reading all of the various backgrounds in here.  Never gets old.
 the guys who go from out of shape to rocking 100s are awesome.   I'm lucky that I was in shape in college, having swam and ran cc in HS  (though not with a high level of success) and played water Polo in college, club team.  Then joined ROTC, took a commission and never had the opportunity to get way out of shape.  That seems a lot easier than starting from the couch.

I never would have finished this.  This weekend was really tough, weather wise.  A shame the cold front (which will be here Wednesday) is just a few days too late.

Indeed. We finally got our cold front yesterday. Was 48 when I ran this morning. Heavenly.

after lightning, and just a hair behind intense humidity, has to be high wind.

first half "man, i am FLYING today".. second half "am i towing a tractor tire??"

Wooton woot.  Hit exactly 1,000.0 miles this morning.   Goal for the year will be 2 megameters running, 5 megameters cycling.

@ThreeThousand - incredible that you were able to finish an Ironman in those conditions.  A friend who lives down there said it was uncomfortable to even watch the race in that heat.  I've DNFed two half-IMs when the conditions were that nasty ...can't imagine how you could finish the full Ironman.  Super impressive!!!  :pickle: :pickle: :pickle:

To add a guy I know here in town - Cat 1 cyclist, has finished IMs in the low 10s had to pull out of IMChoo.  That you managed to finish with such a huge dropout rate is pretty incredible.

REJECTED. :mutombo:

Signed,

B.A.A.

Apparently they accepted almost 1000 less runners this year the cutoff ended up being 2:09. This stings a little but I guess it just means I gotta work at not being a squeaker next year. Giddy up, Richmond.  :football:

Damn, that sucks. What was your qualifying time again?

I'm guessing you meant to type 3:09?

No, I ran a 3:08:44 but in order to get in I would have needed a 3:07:51...in other words, I need to beat my qualifying time by 2 minutes and 9 seconds.

Ah, gotcha. Makes sense now.

Still sucks - sorry you didn't get in. Damn.
No need to be sorry. Up until 2 weeks ago I didn't think I had any chance to get in...should have just listened to my gut and not got my hopes up! But really at this point I'm pretty much over it. The worst part about the whole thing is the convoluted registration system the B.A.A. uses. It's ridiculous in this day and age for it to take 2-1/2 weeks to find out the cutoff.

Agreed.  That's a reason my goal is to qual, but really don't plan on running it.

53 degrees this morning was heavenly.  142bpm, 8:04 pace for 6 compared to a month ago, 7 miles at 142bpm, 8:47 pace.  I'm getting in better run shape but at least 30 of those who 43 seconds are due to temp.

Sucks you didn't get in. :(

I understand their process where they give the elites the first shot...even though it sucks for us squeakers.

Sub 3:05 and we won't have to sweat the cutoff next year.

Great post @SayWhat? and am absolutely awesome accomplishment.

I keep thinking I want to do a 100 but then I start marathon training and remember that the 100 isn't only 4x the distance, it's a whole different event and lifestyle to do it right.

On the marathon training (and I feel a little dumb for asking) what's the difference for Hanson between "x miles easy" and "x mile long run"?  Couldn't I just run the same pace?   Or is easy lije MAF and long more time oriented?  I'm reading online but he gets into the different types of easy runs which I'm not really following (I'm going with z2 for easy runs).
Sorry.....I've been busy with work and this may have been answered later in the thread.

easy run with hanson is 1-2 min/mile slower than MP.

long run is 30 seconds/mile slower than MP.

Hope that helps.

But still...they could open registration to all qualifiers the first week and they could still produce a cutoff. They would probably know the cutoff before the end of the week. It's not like they are using paper applications. The fact that it takes a full week after registration closes is a joke. I bet they try to just drag it out for the drama of it.

Agreed though that this year I will do my best to make sure I'm a week one applicant.

Ok, so the long runs are going to be uncomfortable.  I think I still prefer heart rate training.  But 30 seconds slower probably puts me in the high 150s towards the end, higher on warm days.  I guess that's not bad but in general I've tried to avoid the 150s. Maybe it's time to add that zone back into training.

Hang 10 - sorry, my friend. :kicksrock:    I understand the difficulty for them to establish a field, but their cutoff system is just cruel. :kicksrock:

Speaking of Boston, one of the things I learned on cornhole night last week was that @tri-man 47 was leaning towards joining the FBG contingent at Boston '18.  (Well, he may not have actually said "leaning towards" but pretty close!)

So I have a half scheduled for Sunday. Originally I planned on going all out but conditions aren't looking that favorable. SI going to be in the low to mid 140's. What's the play here? Race or MP workout?

Do what you normally do. Treat it as an MP workout, then after about .10 of a mile your competitive juices will kick in and you'll say to yourself:

"#### it. I'm gonna own this som#####."
