Glad you're getting some help Ned, good luck.

I'm going to start looking for a road bike but have no idea where to start or what to look for. I've got a friend I need to ping who can help me, but welcome thoughts from the riders in here. Is looking for something used the best way to go? What's the price range for a reasonble bike?
I've been using a mountain bike the last few years and it has got the job done for getting some miles in. This year, I'm looking to get a road bike for better speed (thanks Strava!!) and I'm eyeing used Specialized Allez on CL.  I have a few friends who cycle and they recommended that one, though I'm sure there are plenty of others.

How much are willing to spend? I dropped around a grand on mine but I got a pretty decent deal. Looks like it's still on sale.

I was told this was a pretty decent starter bike but I don't really have anything to compare to other than a beach cruiser. :oldunsure:

Someone at work just suggested that same bike, thanks.

I haven't owned a bike since the 80s.

I'll spend a grand, maybe a little more, don't want to be wishing I had a better one a year from now assuning I get into it. Thanks for the link.

Yeah, I was in the same boat when I bought mine. I train with a couple of ironmen and they told me that it was a solid bike. I think if you want something to race with eventually, you may need to pay closer to 2k to get a carbon fiber frame, etc.

I have an older edition of that Fuji and have loved it for years.  Unless you are dead set on the 2016, search around for shops or online retailers that have older models and you can save a ton.  As I recall, mine was 2 model years older and I offered the owner cash for a significant discount.

Go to your local bike store to get a proper fit (might cost money or they might just consider it a way to get your future business).  Then look at Craigslist or other sites.  If the store makes you a good deal, cool but buying used is probably the way to go.  My road bike cost $1500 used, but I'm told it would cost a few k new (Italian, small company)

Damn @Ned that blows. May ankle has finally improved but I'd be lying if I said there was a day or run that goes by where I don't obsess over it. I'm still icing occasionally and taking anti-inflammatories. The good news is that I'm running more and it seems to be getting stronger. Really hopeful that the trend continues. Which leads me to my next point...

I figure if I can continue to improve, I could possibly be ready for a marathon by the end of May. I started looking at possibilities and wondering if anyone here has had any experience with any of these races:

Green Bay, Cleveland & Bay Shore, MI.

They all look like decent course with early starts. Thoughts or suggestions for other races? TIA
I did the Cleveland half last year.  The one in which we had snow, then sleet, then hail, then a torrential downpour, capped off by a round of thunder snow (since I didn't run the full thankfully I was gone by the time this hit) - https://forums.footballguys.com/forum/topic/724983-ran-a-10k-good-racin-fellas/?page=198.  I have never left a race so quickly and by the time we got home (about 10 miles east) we had several inches of snow.  By early afternoon it was sunny and in the 50's.  My oldest's t ball parade was that afternoon and I did it with just a light jacket.

A few years earlier they were pulling people off the course due to the heat.  It wasn't to the level of juxt's unfortunate experience at Green Bay, they weren't stopping low 3's 20 miles in, the 4's and 5's though?  They were cut off.  IIRC they didn't pull the plug until all of the emergency service personnel were disbursed to various issues throughout the course.

Cliff notes - there's no telling what sort of weather you may get here mid May.  Hell, it's going to be 75 and sunny today then over-night thunderstorms followed by snow tomorrow.  So it isn't a mid-May issue, it's everyday life from December until Summer.

The actual course though?  My primary complaint about it has been corrected this year.  It used to finish on an ugly local freeway, but they slid it over to finish in a neighborhood then over one of the bridges into the newly opened public square.  The 2nd half is still rather boring though.  I love the 1st half, but the 2nd is just an out and back and not well spectated.  Once you get to mile 23 the new finish should be nice though.  The weather tho...

Something I may have learned here (Sand??) is to beware of Craigslist and carbon.  I bought my tri-bike for an amazing price off Craigslist and and used a magnifying glass to look over the carbon components before buying.  The bike has been a champ for years.  I luckily passed on another as I found hairline cracks in the forks of the first one I looked at as the guy had tried to cover them up with nail polish.

I killed fubar.   RIP
Never liked that guy anyway.

Anyway, welcome aboard OZ. This is a great thread to learn alot about running, nutrition, types of shoes, etc. Hope you achieve your goals and just ask for help when you need it.

Everyone's favorite pre race meal is fried chicken, right?

Yeah, I imagine there's a chance of dicey weather pretty much everywhere if you're doing marathon in the late spring. I'm really not too worried if the course is boring though. I sorta get tunnel vision when I race anyway.

Appreciate the insight.

You doing the half again this year?

A lot of moving parts in our lives right now, so I haven't made any racing plans but am keeping in shape so when something fits the schedule I can jump on it.  This race is on my radar, but there's a good chance I won't decide until the week of (if it hasn't sold out).

Should be a fun weekend for me at the Gasparilla Distance Classic.  Took it easy this week and should have two good runs.  I did have chicken tenders tonight for good luck.

NTTAWWT ;)

Good to see you're finally getting it checked out.
Speak for yourself.  These are the things that nightmares are made of.

Traveled up through TN for work.  Snuck in a couple rides, moseying over some pretty big hills.  The ride today was pretty cool - nice climb with switchbacks and some serious 50-100ft dropoffs (on the way down, of course) from the road with no shoulder and no railings.  I rode damn near on the centerline for those parts.

Definitely.  Close inspection and using a quarter for a tap test (you can hear the change in tone around a crack).  Pretty rare to find a frame that' just cracked without being noticably broken, but it's definitely possible  Having said that I've bought carbon off of ebay and had good luck.

Wish that I was on ol' Rocky Top
Down in the Tennessee hills
Ain't no smoggy smoke on Rocky Top
Ain't no telephone bills
Once I had a girl on Rocky Top
Half bear, other half cat
Wild as a mink, but sweet as soda pop
I still dream about that
Rocky Top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me
Good ol' Rocky Top
Rocky Top, Tennessee

5k was pretty solid this morning.  I started in the 2nd heat.  Not my best time, but far from my worst.  8k tomorrow is what I'm really going to work at.  Today truly was a "fun run".  Tomorrow will be a good test of where I'm at.

ETA:  11k runners in this one.  5k runners tomorrow.

   Steve's a legend.  People claim they've met him, but some have their doubts. ;)

Meanwhile, I'm just happy to not have broken down this week.  Netted my most weekly miles, ever - 80.0, 11 hours and 11 minutes.

This week - M-F will be a significant decrease before the Delano 12 on Saturday.  Nice to see the following post on facebook:

There is a distinct possibility that a new AL State overall record will be set for the 50 mile distance on March 4th, 2017. We are pleased to announce that Josh Whitehead has registered for the race. The current record (5:43:32) was set back in 1984 by the incredible Phillip Parker. Sign up to be there or just come and cheer him on.
It will be fun getting lapped repeatedly by this guy.

8k was a lot more fun this morning.  Beautiful run along Bayshore albeit breezy throughout.  About 6,000 runners in this one.  They had to close registration.  My pace was solid.  No PR, but only about 15 seconds from it.  Next year I'm doing the 15k on Saturday and the 8k on Sunday if not the half marathon.  I like these running weekends.  The good weather here is coming to an end soon, but I will keep going.

ETA:  Apparently I'm an idiot.  Broke my PR by 49 seconds.  Glad someone out there's keeping track of my times.   :excited:

Like our new friend Oz, I also broke 80 miles for the first time ever this week.  I kind of felt like I cheated though since I started the week with a long run (18) on Monday and finished with one today (20).  Too bad February only has 28 days because otherwise I'd be on pace for my highest monthly total.

When you run 80 miles in a week they're all long runs.

Way to go, Osaurus!!!

Decent cross training for me again this week.

Two swims: 1,500 yards (61 sec/lap and staying strong) and 1,000 yards w/3 x 5 laps @ :57/lap.

Friday was a double - 4 mile run in the a.m. and then the second swim late afternoon.

Yesterday was a 'hard' hour on the bike.  Throughout the tough workout, I was viewing a main section of the club down below and had a great view: Incredibly shapely young gal in grey yoga pants, tight pink t-top, baseball cap and pony tail.  Well endowed; flat tummy; great butt and legs.  Besides the eye candy, she was doing a solid workout of mostly shoulder work.  Not sure if my enjoyment was as a dirty old man or just appreciating a great workout routine.

Wow, two 80 mile weeks in here, unreal!

Pretty happy with my week as well, 10:28, 6,404' of vert, and 51 miles.  Considering how the muddy trails (even without rain the past few days) have slowed my already slow ### down even more, pretty stoked to break 50.

Day off tomorrow, and then mostly hour recovery/easy runs all week heading into Way Too Cool 50K on Saturday, my first race since Cascade Crest in August.  Not trying to treat it like an A race at all, but I have run it three times so know what I'm in for and capable of.  I've done fewer long (4+ hours) runs this cycle than I have in the past, but have been way more consistent than ever before so it will be interesting to see how it plays out.  And those long runs are coming as I move into the spring, for sure.

I have achilles tendinitis with calcification on my heel.  My calf/soleus are tight which is causing the tendinitis, but the calcification on my heel is amplifying it by pushing out against my achilles making it tighter.  Doc wants me to do 2mins of calf/soleus stretching 8-10x a day and then sleep in a night splint.  I can also wear the splint at my desk as long as I don't walk or stand in it.

Good news is he said I can run "if its that important to me" without causing any damage - just have to listen to the pain.  I go back to see him for a follow-up in 8 weeks to see if its any better.  If not, I may need surgery to fix my heel.
