Ran a 10k - Official Thread (10 Viewers)

Heh, yes that was her goal for us.  She's actually doing a HM in the beginning of October and that's her goal pace for the half.  So, I know she can go faster than 8:30 in a 5K.  I mean, she just did 8:17 last week without even full race effort and just did 10 miles a couple days ago at 9:00.  I wouldn't be surprised if she could do a sub 8:00 5K.

That said, a friend of ours is also going to run with us.  Guy used to be a soccer player and in really good shape but now at age 40, 3 kids, and little time, he isn't anywhere near as active as he used to be and I don't think he's doing any training or running.  He did just join a local soccer team again to try and get back into shape.

So, there's a good chance we're going to all just run together and then I won't even bother with pace.  He could surprise as he's a naturally really fit and athletic guy.  And, we could all decide to just run and see what happens.  I honestly don't know.

If given the chance, I'd like to just see what I could do but I honestly doubt I'd be able to leave her behind.  She's been running a long time.
Man, with all the hard work you've been doing, it would be hard to hang back when you KNOW you can go faster.

Yeah you right. Trying to work on it with planks and lower ab stuff throughout the week - might resort to a yoga session or two to help recoup and tie the core together more.

I really haven't figured out how to manage the mileage and any meaningful weight sessions concurrently.
If it makes you feel better, I used to be a personal trainer (still meet with a few actually) and I still haven't figured out a good formula.

Recovery run tonight just to test the hamstring. Invited my 7 yo daughter to go along.

We ran together back in July, and ran 1.25 miles at a pace of 14:04 or so. Tonight: 1.3 miles at a pace of 13:07.

She thought we ran a mile.

Told her she improved by almost a minute AND ran a little bit longer than last time. And, no stopping for her. This girl has a beautiful stride.

Oh, and the hamstring is fine, other than it looks like total ####.

But you said she's capable of 8:00/mi pace or faster.  Challenge her to drop you!  I'm pretty sure that if you make this a casual 5K, you'll regret it afterwards.

Yeah, you may be right. That said, I don't know if I could even do an 8:00. I wouldn't mind going out and beating her, though!

I also just realized it's a kid's costume race so we are supposed to dress up for it. Running in costume can't be good for my time.

Meh. As I was bonking in a marathon years ago, a bare-footed Tarzan passed me by.

Calling it now - @gianmarco will be tapering for his first ever marathon at this time next year.

:blackdot:
You #######.

Btw, what are the chances someone who just started running a month ago can run a half marathon in a couple weeks if they work at it?  Asking for a friend.

P.S.--Just kidding, although now I'm seriously considering signing up for the same race and doing the 5k that morning she does her half.

Yep.

And if you have to walk, so what. Do it @gianmarco.

Seriously, worst case you get a nice long walk.  With aid stations and nice views.

Except, aside from the fact that it's more than twice the longest distance I've ever run (and yes, maybe I can get close or do it all at a slower pace), I would think I'd much rather do the 5k and run it well and shoot for a sub 25 minute as a goal so then the next one can just be more of a fun run with them and the whole costume thing.

What is the date of the HM?

Bunch of drug dealers you all are.

But seriously, I decided I am going to go ahead and sign up for the 5K and try to run sub 25 minute.  It looks like a really flat course too which should help a ton.

Underwear on the outside.

So outside of @SteelCurtain I have no idea what marathons you all are targeting.  Check in time?  Looking like a quality week for our top 4*

*Not Chu though. He only did 116 miles

I am running Philly 11/19, decent week for me but I didn’t get in my 6 mile tempo run.  Got up early to run it on the track but it was under construction.  Attempted to run it later in the day but it was too warm and bailed.  I don’t want to try a tempo this week because of the marathon pace run scheduled for Sunday.  Will likely swap next week’s VO2 max workout with a 6 mile tempo.

Plenty of time. OK, here's what you do:

This weekend. Run an 8 miler at 10:00 pace

Next weekend. Run a 10 miler at 10:00 pace.

The following weekend: Race

Good luck. Can't wait for the race report.
No reason to wait for the weekend. Just did 7.1 at 9:52. Still haven't signed up for the 5k.... :oldunsure:

Please do this.  Please!
99% chance of this happening.

True story:  That picture is me, pushing our little one a few years ago during Halloween.  We're in a friend's neighborhood that is fantastic for Halloween.  All the houses are decorated for several blocks and there's just tons of people in the street with their kids.  We're walking down the sidewalk and there's a guy wearing a Gorton's Fisherman's costume coming the opposite way with his wife (I guess).

As he's about to walk past, I step right in front of him and just start staring at him, without saying a word.  Guy is clearly taken aback at first and almost immediately you can see a "wtf" look come over his face.  I lean over a little and I go "Sorry....I thought you were a banana" and then kept on walking.  I didn't look back but I heard his wife cracking up.

The unintended timeliness of this post was absolutely perfect.  I was tinkering with my winter/spring marathon training schedule and was mulling over removing any tempo's the same week as a MP.  And you just confirmed doing it.  Cheers!

Let's say I was going to do this. Should I run anything between these? If so, what?

My workout partner also said I should do the half because I can.

I'm considering it.  Just need to see if the wife will buy into the idea....

Just continue what you are doing. Just make sure you have one of these long runs each of the next two weekends. You just want to prep your legs for being on them for 2 hours.

Personally, I like your earlier plan:  Fun run the 5K in the gorilla suit and hard run that next 5K.  If you want to keep the hobby up, there is plenty of time for a half marathon later when you can properly train.

Idea officially nixed by wife for same reason. Mostly doesn't want any injury and not worth it. Honestly, I agree even though I think I could do it.

Going to do this 5k on October 1st and run hard with goal of under 25 minutes. Then the 5k 3 weeks later can either be for fun or can still run it hard depending on how things are with our friend.

Fixed.  (sorry, honey-bunny)  You're officially ours, now, gianmarco.  Accept the reality, and welcome to the club.  Your 10K Thread secret decoder ring is in the mail.

Page 4 for this thread?  Don't you know that I'm mostly a creeper in here and need your updates to keep me motivated?  Page 4 is simply unacceptable.  I'll forgive it this time, and contribute my once per month posting.

I had an incredibly fun day on Monday.  I took the day off to help volunteer with post-race cleanup back here in Minneapolis for all the stuff that Rocksteady Running used over the weekend to put on the Superior Fall Trail Races (100, 50, and Marathon).  I've been wanting to volunteer, also needing to as a requirement for the RdL 100, and this seemed a great opportunity to give back just a tiny bit to an organization and race that I'm very fond of.

Wow.  Simply wow.  I couldn't be more astounded at what goes into putting these races.  I mean, on one hand you realize it as you're running through aid station after aid station but to see all of the gear in one location that's needed to accomplish putting on a point to point 100 mile race was just nuts.  Two moving vans packed quite literally floor to ceiling needed to be unloaded including everything you'd think of, from 50+ tents, to 100+ chairs, tables, tarps, generators, water jugs, propane stoves/tanks, fuel, banners, and hundreds of signs.  Also totes upon totes of things you think far less about such as power cord/strips/3-ways, drop bag sacks, lights, volunteer name badges, medical supplies, tape, bungees, cups, about a thousand more things, and food...bread, pretzels, peanut butter, jelly, candy, soup, coffee, potatoes, boxes upon boxes of gels, and the list goes on.   All of the major gear needed to be set up, washed off, and dried since it would now be stored through the winter season.  All of the totes needed to be unloaded, sorted, and re-packaged.  The entire process used to take a week, but about 15 of us had it all done in a little over five hours.  And it just made me appreciate that race and that organization just so much more.  Unreal.  One final pic as some of the gear is starting to trickle back into his garage for storage.

So I arrived home mid-afternoon on Monday to my wife and napping 2-year old.  My wife told me that I should run to the bus stop to get our 5-year old from Kindergarten.  I had actually been thinking that, so I quickly got ready and out the door.  Unfortunately I wasn't thinking much about how relatively little time I left for an old slow trail guy to get the 3.5 miles to the bus stop in time.  As I took my first steps my mental calculation left me somewhere in the max 8min/mile range, but then I was second guessing whether it was actually 3.5 miles or if it was more like 4 miles.  So I ran harder than I'm used to and logged the first three miles at 7:01/7:08/7:02.  I made it and actually felt good to singe the lungs a little bit, but alas, I think I'll leave the road running to you guys.  But what happened next is just a microcosm of parenting.  The plan was to get my daughters bike, which had been at a friends house within a block of the bus stop, and have her bike next to me as we made our way back the 3.5 miles to home.  The only problem was her backpack.  She seemed to have a couple bricks in it and ultimately didn't want to wear it on her back as she biked.  So of course I did the dad thing, and carried this pretty pink backpack the entirety of our trek home.  Felt pretty ridiculous jogging with that thing, but hopefully it made at least a couple people chuckle at the sight.

Finally, a quick Superior 100 side story from this weekend...the winner this year (I heard) was coached by the course record holder.  He finished just 65 seconds off the course record, and had said coach/record holder running him into the finish line as he pushed trying get there.  Such a cool community ultrarunning, and runners in general, are.  But can you imagine running 103 miles and missing the course record by a minute (six tenths of a second per mile)??  Ugh.

So for you strava users, is there a way to be able to highlight a segment of a run?

On MapMyRun, when I uploaded a run, there would be the run graph that showed distance, elevation, pace, heart rate, etc. I used to be able to highlight just a section of that run to see the split data.

When Under Armour bought them, they took that feature away and added it to the MVP (not free) section. (eff you Under Armour. pricks.  )

Anyway, that feature was really helpful to go back and check segments like for tempo runs where I could highlight the point where I started running hard so I could see the data just for that part of the run.

Does strava do the same thing? I've checked so far on the free side. Is this available on premium? Not sure I want to pay for it, but if strava has it I would rather pay them and say screw you Under Armour.

You sort of can on desktop/ipad - don't think you can on mobile.  Maybe iPhone is different - I have a droid.  If you click on your run and scroll to the bottom of the page your entire run is there in graph form.  Just put your mouse on different portions and you'll get time, mileage, elevation, grade, and pace (GAP too if activated).  It takes some number crunching, but if you want to know a specific section just note the time and mileage at the beginning + end.  Can't tell exactly, but it looks like the readings on desktop/ipad are about every .02 miles/about 100' feet.  Since there's already rounding error using GPS anyway that's close enough for me!

Yeah, I've tried to do that, but give up when too much math is involved.

Another update on my 24+ year journey of fixing my calf:

A couple of weeks back, my current running specialist (chiropractic orthopedist / biomechanics ugy) referred me to a foot/ankle specialist at Rush, a leading teaching hospital here in Chicago.  They treat the Bulls and Sox for whatever that's worth.  Anyway, I had the initial consult today.  The MD verified that whatever I have is atypical presentation of a calf injury - a square peg in a round hole were his words.  Because I'm not exhibiting a lot of symptoms at rest, he's not sure what that anatomical issue is just yet.  I had an X-ray and MRI done today and he's hoping to identify a muscle intertwined with a bone in a weird way or some other nerve, tendon out of place.  I go back on Sept 25th to see what the MRI tells him.  It's a PITA to get there in the mornings and since this is the top of the food chain on MDs --> if this doesn't work, I think I'm on my own.

In terms of my day-to-day, I'm in a good week injury wise.  I'm out of the "take it easy, let it heal" phase and I haven't ####ed it up in about 2 weeks which is pretty good for me (!). I'm trying to get around ~ 9 miles in back-to-back days and then rest day and then repeat (2 on; 1 off).  So far so good.  I'm trying to focus on my right foot landing pattern to mirror my left and see if that helps my calf pain.

Got a 5K next Tuesday as part of corporate challenge and I will now miss next weekend's Oktoberfest 5K (the one with teams that I've done with my brother) because I have daddy-daughter campout to attend.

Yeah, I've tried to do that, but give up when too much math is involved.
:lmao:  I try to avoid it, so I start tempo's at the beginning of new miles.  I usually don't care enough about total vO2 segment times, but that seems to be the only time I need to do it - otherwise I'm just scrolling over to get a general idea of my speed like yesterday's stride workout.

Yeah, I've tried to do that, but give up when too much math is involved.
Just send me any questions you have. I've already analyzed all of your runs, several others, and mine many times over with detailed notes. I'm sure I can answer whatever it is you want to know.

I think Strava on a PC web browser used to be able to do what Chief is looking for.  You used to be able to pull up your run pace chart and then drag the mouse over a section and it would give you stats for the highlighted part of the run.  Now you can only put your mouse on a single point of time and see the pace at that point as MAC points out.

Set your watch's lap interval to match whatever your workout intervals will be.  For tempos, I always did what @MAC_32 just said.

So if you're doing 5x800, make your laps 0.5mi.

How do I PR my marathon on 10 miles per week?
