Ran a 10k - Official Thread (5 Viewers)

1 week back home and it's been a slow climb back.

Absolutely love my workout today, just a one hour walk up the hill on post. 1400' in 3 miles, keeping around MAF going up (dips a bit going down but really can't speed up much and keep footing). But I need to do more Hill work on the road.

I start earlier shift Monday, start work at 630, off at 4. Should be good.

Totally unrelated post to running, but wanted to share my excitement with some iFriends.  My daughter came home from kindergarten yesterday just beaming.  She simply could not have been happier and indicated that she had been presented with an award, the only one in her class of 24 children. I, as her father, simply could not be more proud.  I've attempted to instill in her some core values that I believe to be important, to groom her to live every day to the fullest, and teach her that she can do anything that she sets her mind to.  And when you start seeing the payoff in her second week of school at just five years of age, well, then you know you've done your job and that she fully understands what's important in life.

Heading to Dallas on Monday and then to Winchester, VA for a few weeks.  I will miss my 15k on October 1, but it's probably for the best right now.  I have an 8k trail run and then a 5k the next day the last weekend of October and then plenty of others in Nov and 1 in December before I head to Hawaii  :excited: .  Should be fun.  Gonna try to run as much as I can while I'm away from home.

Always fun exploring other cities.  Are you staying downtown Dallas?  If so, you can get to a trail down in the basin along the river and run quite a long time.

I'm actually looking forward to this. Heading to Chicago today for the weekend and will try and run a couple times while there.

It's funny, now when I drive around I pay attention to what a road might be like to run. I also pay attention to every runner I see and judge them as much as possible.

It's nice and flat there. Enjoy.

Marriott on Naper.
Oh, that's very close to Danada Forest Preserve.  There are several miles of trails there. (Well maintained though so not really "trail running".)  @tri-man 47 and I have run a half marathon held there.

You also might want to run downtown on the Riverwalk.  It's only 1.75 miles but running an out and back wouldn't be bad.  Downtown Naperville is nice.  The bar scene at night is also pretty good for a suburb.

Heh, will see. Staying in Naperville so likely running in that area.
I'd love to head out that way and catch a run, but we've got a guest in from Cuba for the weekend.  That, plus a neighborhood 5K race in the a.m. ...small enough that I can still medal monger despite not having any sort of high gear right now.

There's a 5K Strava segment right there at the hotel that is flat. Also looks like Seager Park is a little over a mile away. A run there, around it, then back wouldn't be bad.  Might drive to one of those spots, though.  A lot will depend on tournament schedule and when I can even get out.

Got a run in this morning. Just wish someone had warned me about the Chicago wildlife.

I'm a little over 2 miles in, running on a sidewalk and about to cross an entrance into some shopping plaza, which has a crosswalk, it's not even 7am and there is no traffic. One car is on the road and wants to turn into that entrance. Lady sees me and still tries to turn in as I'm running through. And then honks at me.

Thanks to that, I sidestepped in case she actually was going to keep going and tweaked my calf. Tried to keep going but it was getting worse so just stopped.

####. And had a nice run going too.

I quit.

That is all. :censored:
I tweaked my groin 2 weeks ago playing soccer and haven't been the same since. Finished my 5K this morning but not ideal.  I have 5 weeks to the next event and I hope to get healed and some more miles logged.

Injected 10 miles Saturday and 20 miles Sunday into me legs. Was a key training weekend and I was on point with food & fuel and had good week following training race last weekend.  Expected slower pace than prior 20m but it was a struggle from about mile 3 on with brief bits of less struggle. Sunday was probably tougher than anything thus far and without fuel/water/planning I would have crashed entirely. So that is a good thing in the grand scheme.

Step back this week and then another 20ish in 2 weekends back at the beach.

Beach was great. Crowds are down so fav restaurants are much more doable.

Morning after I feel much better all around about my effort and conditions and race day energy and taper effects should all be pluses.

SteveC finished 12th in Philly Half Marathon.  Came through first 5k in 15:25 and finished 1:08:29.   Pretty good, I guess.

It's race week!  Heading up to Chattanooga to check-in on Thursday morning and returning to Atlanta afterwards.  Heading up for the race midday Saturday.  Am super-excited - I've not been on a race course since Louisville last year (October 2016).  The training is fine, but racing is just so much more fun.

They changed my plans and I'm now in D.C area (other Winchester).  Just saw a Dulles 5k/10k this Saturday.  Hmmmm.  Tempting.

Makin' Tracks 5K Report

22:24 (7:15/mi)

1st of 10 in old man AG;  13th/ about 150 overall (approx cut-off of 'runners' and walkers)

This is a neighborhood 5K put on by the other local university from where I work.  It's a quarter mile from my house, loops around the neighborhood I run all the time, and it finishes on the track that's my main training base.  So it would have been hard to pass up, even though my conditioning is still sub-par.  Ate too much the night before (chicken!), so the morning routines were a bit too robust, but not a problem.  Jogged 1 1/2 miles through the neighborhood to warm up, stopped by the track to get my bib and stuff, and jogged back home to finish prepping - put the bib on, changed to my racing flats, had a gel and fluid, and one final pee.  Jogged back over and did some accelerations before waiting at the start line.

Almost no one wanted to line up in the front row, so I stepped on up.  Gun sounds, and of course about 20 people fly out of the gates and pass me.  21, to be exact.  I settle in to a comfortably uncomfortable pace and just let the race roll by.  I haven't been racing much or doing hardly any tempo runs, so I'm really not acclimated to the discomfort of holding a hard tempo.  I pretty much cruised the whole race at a steady pace.  Passed four people before mile 1; passed four more around the mile 2 mark.  I had inched past another long legged 50 year old around this time, and we were back and forth over the last mile.  I could have run stronger and put him away with a half mile to go ...but didn't.  As we turned the last corner and entered the track, he was able to pass me.  So that was it.  An OK effort for the training I've done.  I could tell during the middle of the race that my stride just didn't feel long and strong, which is an indication of my training.  I think I'll try to gear things up for another handful of weeks and find another 5K in late October/early November.  I don't like having thoughts that 22:xx is my new normal rather than just lack of training.

Race is totally sold out.  I did find some parks in the area with nice trails though.  Calling it a night.  I'm exhausted.

After calf pain last Sunday I took a couple of days off, then tried again Wednesday.  Made it about 4 miles and the pain came back, stopped me in my tracks.  That added on to the piriformis and achilles issues I've been dealing with has been really frustrating.  I went to the gym afterward to sit in the sauna, and there was a chiropractor/therapist there handing out flyers, we ended up talking and he works with some other local ultrarunners (two top-20 WS100 finishers, no he didn't tell me their names but I figured it out) so I ended up making an appointment for this morning.

He did a pretty thorough assessment going over my running and injury history, he put me on a treadmill and video'd me, showing me some things (over pronating) going on.  Then we started to dig into everything from the feet up to the hips, and working on some problem spots.  He also gave me a few things for home therapy - toe spreaders, a trigger point tool, and a hard rubber ball (for my feet), to go along with the plethora of tools I told him I have here already.  Obviously I've had these imbalances, inflexibilities, etc for some time, and in the ramp up to States and then the race itself I was pushed over the edge.  Hoping today is the first day of putting me on a path to becoming a healthier, and better, runner.

Only 19 days from Chicago and I'm feeling pretty good.

I've run the ENTIRE Hanson's plan.  Never missed a run and any runs I had to cut short due to life or GI issues, I made those miles up.

I have never been more dedicated to a plan and I'm feeling strong.  Hanson's seems to work with me in terms of preventing injury.

I'm in taper mode but admittedly, Hanson's still pushes you pretty hard until about 10 days out.  My long runs won't be as long so its progress.  I've been training at 7:27 and I think I'll likely shoot for a 7:30 pace to start Chicago.  Hopefully, I can just cruise myself to a BQ and a PR (3:21:04).

In other news, I did something yesterday that I never thought I would.  I registered for the Boston Marathon. For many runners, its a lifelong goal to get to Boston.  As someone who lived in Boston for 7 years, I understand the significance of the race.  There is nothing guaranteed as I was "only" 3 min 56 seconds faster than BQ, but everything I read makes me pretty confident I'll make it in with that buffer.  I'll keep you all apprised.

Awesome.

For a guy like me, I would kill to be able to run Boston, but I know in my heart of hearts I will never be able to. So I am lucky enough to follow along with you guys as you run that race. Hope you get in.

I'm either done training or have one more real workout tomorrow, which will be 11 days out from race day.  I'm taking the afternoon off and going to do (most of) the half marathon race course.  We'll see on intensity.  If I'm feeling energized maybe I'll mix in some tempo/HMP pace late, may help some mentally, but I'm not going to force it if I'm at all fatigued.

I felt gooood on Saturday's 15 (net 7:10 pace) and don't think there's much else I can do to improve performance training-wise.  I was able to talk myself out of pushing the pace until mile 13, but once I got back to my neighborhood I succumbed to temptation and let er rip.  I think everything has to break right, but I'm approaching this race trying to break an hour 20.  Building in bail out strategies if it isn't happening since I still want to set a sizeable PR though.

Weird timing for a race report, but that's what happens when the race is lunchtime on a Tuesday.  This was corporate office park 5k challenge.  I was talking to someone post-race and it dawned on me that I've been working in this office park for  probably 12 years (last 6 years and 6 back in 2000's) and never done this race.  Race is 200 to 300 desk jockeys burning off some steam on a mild 70F day.  Course is very flat road surface.  Coming into race with a good book of miles the last few weeks (for me), but malaise has thrown off diet and other exercises I would normally do.

Mile 1: 6:20 per watch  - I was late through starting line and was passing a lot of people so it felt faster than more normal actual.  I was trying to go much easier than previous 5K's which did happen, but I was thrown off by speed of others.  Felt good through mile 1 marker

Mile 2: 6:50  - I was purposely going a little easier this 2nd mile.  Partly because last 5K made me hating life at 2 mile marker when I went out too fast and partly I was wondering why I was busting my butt when our company had 0 chance.

Mile 3: 6:40 - this was much, much better than last 5K I did.  Obviously because I took a slower mile 2, but that helped confidence for mile 3 pacing and I wound up passing a couple of people in this mile and had a nice kick.

Finish: 20:15.  7th overall.  1st guy for our company. No AG awards.

Overall pretty happy.  Based on watch,  this seemed a little short of a full 5K (someone else thought it was 3.07), but whether my time was 20:15 or 20:25, it's better than the 20:42 from a few weeks ago and much more enjoyable.  Next 5K I'll look to tighten up that mile 2 pace a little.

In other news, I get MRI results and evaluation next Thursday.  This got postponed a little cause we will get a new puppy on Sunday (this Sunday, or next Sunday? 5 days from now).  Real small dog, so no 5 mile jaunts with him, but maybe getting in more walking.  Looking forward to this!

TL;DR - probably not worth reading to be honest  :D

3 running injury questions:

1) when doing long runs during marathon training (20+ miles) around mile 15 or 16, my hamstring will get kind of "grabby" and tight.  It feels like at any moment it will become a pulled muscle, but if i just keep pushing through at the same pace, the feeling just goes away eventually and for the remaining run (miles 18 - 20+) it doesn't bother me any more.  Any clue what's going on in the middle miles?

2) I've been doing some really hard 8 - 10 mile runs lately, and towards the end of these runs, my right testicle feels like it's going to be sucked up into my body.  It's very uncomfortable and i have actually reached down to push it away from my body so it doesn't hurt so bad, but it comes right back up again.  Doing longer less intense runs, no issues, just seems to be during the very high intensity runs.  Anyone else experienced this?

3) stomach pain.  this has probably been brought up a lot throughout this topic (and discussed thoroughly throughout the internet), but mine just seems different than what i've read.  It's not pain like i have to puke, and not pain like i have to poop, but it feels like my intestines are literally being squeezed and twisted and tied in knots.  It has to be food/hydration related, but i feel like i've tried every combo and every supplement with no luck. My entire ironman training was done on gatorade/water mixes, shot blocks, and GU's.  I'd do a long brick, but by the time i got to the run, stomach torture.  I ran out of time to try anything different, so on race day i went with potato chips and peanut butter crackers on the bike and made it through the run in decent shape (although they handed out redbull during the run and i probably drank 3 cans worth).  Maybe it's a sugar thing?  Planning to try my next marathon on chips and crackers and see how it goes.  Any suggestions for articles i may have missed that may be helpful?

boxers and soccer shorts
I'd look into some running shorts with a liner in them. At least that's what works for my old saggy balls.

And not necessarily the short ones. Something like an Under Armour or Nike dri-fit type short with liner.

Just recently bought Adidas Climalite Boxer Brief.  I will be buying more of these.
I wear Saxx under my shorts.  Their BallPark Pouch™ keeps everything right where it should be. After 80 miles the salt buildup in there from sweat can lead to some issues, but I don't think that should be a problem for most.

1- might be adhesions?

2- boxer briefs!

3- first thought, it's diet. But not during your runs. It's the rest of the time.

Found some places to run up here in Winchester, VA tonight, but it was getting dark so I ended up at the gym after work.  Hoping to get out of work a little earlier and/or run this weekend.  Still trying to get into some kind of routine here (I've only been here 1.5 days).
