Ran a 10k - Official Thread (13 Viewers)

It's been awhile on this: What are people doing for early morning running light wise?  Nothing? Clip-on head lamp?

I've only recently gone on roads when it's pitch black and yesterday just carried this little light. I thought it was clip-on, but it's not.

Next week with daylight savings, I'll get some light back, but then need it in Dec and Jan.
I just hold i little flashlight which I dislike. Gotta up my light game!

All alone, no dog to pace me and just ran a 26:59 5K at lunch, per strava, and felt really good doing it. To go with that, according to my scales, I've lost 8.5 lbs and 1.5% body fat during the month of October. I'm kind of floating on a cloud over here.

Almost exactly 30 years ago, I ran an 18:03 5K in one of my final HS XC meets. 3 minutes per mile is quite the difference but again, I was 30 years younger, and 70 lbs lighter.

I’m a little hesitant to put this out there, but #### it. Hoping for 1:29:30 (which should feel pretty easy) for the first half and 1:28:30 or a tad faster (which won’t) for the second half.
"Good things come to those who go out and f####### earn it."

From a friend's FB page.           :boxing:     :headbang:

Ask @gianmarco about running with lights; he’s the resident expert on that topic around here.

Curious to know why you’re hesitant to put that out there? Is it a lack of confidence or something completely different? Based on your last marathon, I would say that may be a bit too conservative of a goal for you. Just eat plenty of rice.

Just wanna avoid putting any unnecessary pressure on myself

Headlamp and clip on reflectors if I run on roads

Fwiw, my goal for next weekend is about 30 seconds per mile slower (than either of your halves)  I'm not breaking 90 this time, hoping for <94

No offense to anyone but every time I see someone with a "13.1" sticker on the back of their vehicle I crack up.

Hey look at me!  I did part of a big accomplishment and I want you to know it!  What's also funny is they're all adults.
Most bumper stickers are dooshey "look at me" stuff. Stick finger families, political stuff that stays on years after the election, honor rolls, etc. They suck.

I have five. A black heart (2nd brigade, 101st airborne), one from the 82nd, a tri symbol, one from the flying monkeys marathon, and a "share the road" for cyclists. All are for things that matter to me, but can also be taken as "look at me" stuff.  Screw anyone who thinks it's dooshey. Everytime I look at them I smile a little.

I also have a Jayhawks license frame and Army plate. ?

All of those are considerable accomplishments, obviously, good for you.

Sorry but "13.1" cracks me up.

Bumped into a running friend of mine (one of the old guys, like me) and mentioned I was getting new shoes.  He shared a good tip: Write the purchase date with a permanent marker on the under-side of the tongue.  Not as accurate as tracking miles, but not a bad idea.

I noticed @bushdocda labeled the date with the name of his shoe on Strava to track both. I'll be doing that next time.

Strava keeps track of your mileage if you take the time to select your shoe for that run.

But why would I care about the date I bought the shoe?

I did it bc I added a second exact pair of the same shoes after a few months in the first pair so I noted the date so I could tell apart in strava.

Do you do this on the garmin app?  or do you need to go to the desktop?

I'm an Iphone guy if it makes a difference.

You can only add/delete shoes from the desktop site.

ETA: For Strava at least. Not sure about Garmin.

Ahh. My Kinvaras are different colors so it's easy.

I do make sure I select my shoe on every run and I've got the miles on them. They've definitely lost the spring to them and I know it's getting near. I've seen them rated between 300-500. Mine are definitely closer to 300 from what I can feel.  One pair is at 265 and the other at 200. Unfortunately I can't even find my size in the 8's and they haven't dropped the price on the 9's yet.

Just to have an idea how long they last. As I ordered mine online, I can easily just check the date I ordered as well but if I ever buy a shoe in a store, I'll label it on Strava.

My wife gave me a 26.2 sticker after running my first marathon.  I told her thanks, but I didn't want to be that guy who got all braggy about running just one marathon....but after I'd be happy to stick it on the car after I finished my second one.

Still have the sticker 6 years later.  :bag: Hoping to put it on soon.

96.3 miles run in October for me.  3rd most I've ever put in a months time.  Dec 1 Half for me.  I'm overly anxious at this point.

I need a little under 200 miles these last 2 months to hit 1000 for the year. Pales in comparison to most of you animals but would be kind of cool to hit. If weather/holidays cooperate, I should be able to hit it but will be close.

I have one workout left, 10 miles at MP tomorrow morning and then it is the start of the taper. Trying out the shorts I plan wear on race day as I lost the string in the shorts I usually wear in marathons. I have been able to hit all my paces the past 6 weeks and hopefully I will be able to continue the streak tomorrow. I already started looking at the 10 day weather forecast and so far it looks good.

I was just looking to see how this year's mileage compares to last and I'm tracking similarly.  Last year was more "2 run days; 1 day off" and this year is more every other day which is big driver for it, as it certainly feels like I'm running more consistent this year.   I'm at 692 YTD thru today and last year was 868 (full year).

Overall goal for me is to be able to run 6 to 9 miles consistently (ideally, this would be 5 or 6 times a week), so I'm closer to this goal than I've ever been.  Overall mileage does not have any kind of interests or targets for me.

Did a workout yesterday I've been talking about with a few running friends for a while.  One of them came up with the name 'canyon' some time ago.  It's a play on up-the-ladder, down-the-ladder but Costanza'd - the opposite.  You start off with a rep at a distance in which you'll also finish.  You work your way to shorter distances, but try to do each one a little faster than the one previous.  Once you reach the low point then you increase the distance again, but try not to slow down.  A brain builder as one of them puts it, and she couldn't be more correct.  Because the final reps are all about focus and will power.  To add my own little masochist spin to it I added some inclines to final reps last night too.

Since I have no basis of comparison (my first one) I don't know exactly how successful this was, but on the surface I'm happy - and my legs are angry.

0.7 miles in 4 mins @ about a 5:25 clip

0.5 miles in 2 mins 40 seconds @ about a 5:20 pace

0.4 miles in 1 min 50 seconds @ about a 5 min flat

0.5 miles in 2 mins 50 seconds @ about a 5:40 pace, but the first 75% of this rep was at a 2-3% steady incline

0.6 miles in about 3 mins flat (could not hold on any longer) @ about a 5:15 clip - I knew I couldn't make it the full 4 mins but I tried to hang on as long as I could...mentally was losing focus though and at that point in the workout you can't do that, too much injury risk

My group texts immediately afterwards - #### that ####, never again, it was awesome, I blacked out, I'm scheduling another next week.

I'm actually a little surprised to see that I'm on the cusp of 1,000 miles (985 currently).  I'd cross-trained last winter, so running miles weren't heavy (as planned), summer wasn't consistent at all, and now I've lost a handful of weeks with the hip issue.  But ...looking forward to getting back to steady, productive routines and doubling that mileage next year.

It's about mileage, not days/months.

Mine last 300 - 500 depending on the brand.
I think it depends on you and the brand, but Brooks Glycerins usually make it around 400 or so.  Happy medium here.  Although the generation of shoe matters too imo.  I had a couple of pairs of Glycerin 14s that we’re awful.  The soles delaminated after 100 miles or so.   They’re a lot better again.

Some of my runs trigger flashbacks of high school cross country and I recently recalled that a hard CC workout would usually result in 30 to 60 minutes on the can after practice (I can't say this was the same for everybody).  Anyway, in current times, I sometimes question if I'm pushing myself hard enough during workout runs and I know I haven't had a good #### inducing workout in a while.  This canyon workout sounds like it would do the trick.

Nice paces by you!  I recently did a 0.4 segment and only mustered 5:35 pace.

I anxiously look forward to you describing in graphic detail your future toilet massacre.

:bye:

18 months ago I couldn't run 1km without walking.  In the last four weekends I have run a 20km in each week and feel stoked for my HM attempt in just under two weeks.

I'm in awe of everyone on this board -- especially those who can run for 36 hours through the mountains in the dark.

But for now I just need to keep bettering myself and I really appreciate everyone here and their support.  It would be easy for @SFBayDuck to just ignore my noobness but it's great when I get a supporting post from such an incredible athlete like him.

A couple of months ago I was hiking Prairie Mountain here in Alberta and decided to try to climb it three times in one effort.  On the second ascent an ultrarunner (they all look the same!) passed me on the way down.  He had already seen me on my first attempt and as he passed me on this second one he recognized me and said "nice work".  He was way faster than I was but for a guy like him to pay me a compliment gave me all the motivation I needed to get my second and third ascents done.  I used those two words as fuel for the following three hours.

So thanks to all of you who encourage us newbies even though we're slow and will likely never be as fast as you!
Aww, thanks, but an "incredible athlete" I am not!  But I appreciate the kind words.  As SC and Mac and you and others  have said, runners tend to be a pretty supportive group.  And I think ultra/trail runners tend to take this to the extreme, and that's a big part of why I keep doing this crazy sport.  Just last weekend at Javelina I was chatting with people like Tim Tollefson and Chris Denucci and Ann Trason (all elite bad asses, now or all-time), and every one of them asked what I had coming up next.  So cool.
